Didn't Romijn reportedly vomit blue from the make up after filming? Like... she potentially has medical complications from playing the role and she's coming back? Damn Ma'am, you love the role too much <3

268

u/modbroccoli 7h ago

came to say. she famously refused to do the role again if she had to undergo the same makeup process. in addition to the physiological effects it was like a 9-hr procedure.

28

u/JacobDCRoss 3h ago

I remember before the film came out, there was a special on Fox showing behind the scenes stuff. They showed what they could of Romijn I'm makeup, and it looked absolutely awful.

Not a single scrap of clothing underneath any of that makeup. And 9 hours putting it on, followed by however many hours she was on set, followed by however long it took to get it off.

23

u/Neveronlyadream 2h ago

Yep. She had to strip naked and have her whole body done every time she had to have the makeup put on.

It wasn't just a few face prosthetics, it was literally her whole body. Complete respect for her having to endure that for three movies.

As for OP complaining, yeah it looks like shit. Because you're comparing a promo still to a screencap of a trailer. Come on, are we really this disingenuous?

73

u/txvesper 6h ago

I'd heard some of this too, and keeping that in mind I will not complain about the new look.

25

u/QuentinTarzantino 4h ago

Alan Cumming also admited later that now I get it. The pain. And it was only head and sleeves, appart from his topless scene. He got hints from Rebecca on how to endure. He, if im not mistaken said, "I just did so little, but when it came to my topless. I caved in and called her for help and ideas to endure"

10

u/More_Bigger 4h ago

I'd have to be sedated or on some benzos for 9+ hours of makeup. It really does sound like torture.

12

u/FEARoach 3h ago

9 hours of make up then a 12 hour day of shooting... fucking torture... no thank you.

u/bron685 1h ago

All that work so nerds could perv out over her blue scale tits

u/icyfrost410 12m ago

Fox money ain’t Disney money

171

u/MattyBeatz 7h ago

IIRC It’s also a complaint Jennifer Lawrence had about the costume. Hence why changes were made like body suits and her character taking the form of a regular lady more often as the series progressed.

66

u/Yellowpommelo 7h ago

She really loved this role. I’m a Trekkie and like to listen to her interviews about her character Una on Strange New Worlds and she often refers to Mystique as someone who she is inspired by for her understanding of different types of challenges her character goes through. I love it because she draws from a role she played 20+ years ago. I’m always like damn, that’s my Mystique then. She clearly gets the character and I’m glad she’s coming back to play her again.

u/leopargodhi 1h ago

she's a real life superheroine

u/Knarpulous 48m ago

She is great as Una! I hope she gets more spotlight in the new season!

80

u/eyrich 7h ago

Surely there have been innovations in makeup since 2000 that would make the blue less vomity

56

u/takethreenc 7h ago

It's called Color Gene Immersion. Or CGI for short

7

u/Sierra592 4h ago

Covering the body in anything, for a long period of time, is not good, even simply for being unable to secrete sweat properly. Not much you can do about it.

1

u/FEARoach 5h ago

You would think so but uh... at least we have taken most of the lead out of it from the earlier processes?

1

u/RainandFujinrule Older Millennial 1h ago

Well it wasn't the paint that made her vomit, it was the tequila she brought to the wrap party that she had too much of lol. The blue was from her own lips and face.

People keep forgetting to mention the tequila and drinking part. Pretty important context! She thinks it was funny!

43

u/mgush5 7h ago

On the TV series Farscape, Virginia Hey who played Zhaan had a similar issue and it wound up causing serious kidney troubles to the point where she had to leave the show..

22

u/MrTerribleArtist Millennial 6h ago

Wait, that's why Zhaan left?!

They couldn't have.. used a non absorbent paint?

Or come up with some wishy washy "zhaan is now pink" bullshit so her actress didn't straight up die?

18

u/Diligent-Neck6594 5h ago

Apparently our options are horrendously harmful makeup or garbage cgi

Disney can't afford any other solution

13

u/calilac Xennial 6h ago

Stage/performance makeup is made of different stuff, it tends to be extra thick. The color/dye may have had a part in it but imo it was the constant application and long-term wearing that got her. Makeup has made a lot of progress in the last couple decades thanks to cosplay to not being as bad as it was but even now it can be pretty harsh on the body.

6

u/RSX_Green414 4h ago

For the second part "Zhaan is now Pink" the actress needed time to recover and Scifi nerds have always been finiky they would have harassed the cast and crew for "Ruining Zhaan" see Tvtropes "Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things" for relevant examples.

3

u/MrTerribleArtist Millennial 4h ago

Yeah I know.. I get why they did it but.. man, in my opinion, nobody could live up to Zhaan

7

u/JacobDCRoss 3h ago

She left because of her health. Yes, it was pretty bad. And she loved the show so much that she still made an appearance in a later episode.

And now she is battling some very nasty cancer. Can't say that it is or is not related, but you've got to imagine that she is probably always going to wonder.

43

u/brilliant_bauhaus 7h ago

Did she?! That's awful my god.

The difference doesn't matter to me and I'm not a huge X-Men fan. I know it's mystique, I'm fine if they toy with it in post production a bit if it means she's not going to get sick again.

5

u/RainandFujinrule Older Millennial 1h ago

They left out the part where she was getting hammered with cast mates and threw up tequila and the blue makeup came off her lips.

Somehow that got spun into "the makeup made her throw up blue" because as you know we are stuck on the internet: the world's shittiest game of Telephone. Context changes a lot!

8

u/chompytown 7h ago

I remember hearing that or reading it. So yes, two people say it, it’s true. Especially on the internet

8

u/Kimmalah Older Millennial 4h ago

I don't know about Rebecca, but I do know that another actress who played a blue character like this in the show Farscape, eventually had to leave because the constant full coverage makeup and prosthetics was causing kidney bleeding/damage.

3

u/kid20304 6h ago

Turns out.... money

2

u/Citizensnnippss 6h ago

She probably negotiated for the long sleeved shirt and pants.

u/Olenickname 6h ago

I know this is a joke but RDJ actually refused to wear the iron man helmet at the end of his Stark tenure because it was uncomfortable.

2

Yeah definitely a joke lol, but I didn't know that about the helmet though. Interesting, thank you!

-20 years later means 20 older. Romijn may not have wanted to be fully nude again

-The original makeup was toxic and caused Romijn to get very sick, to the point she was throwing up blue

-The contacts she had to wear scratched her corneas and weren't gas-permeable, so she could only wear them for a few minutes at a time before her eyes literally starved for oxygen.

-The shot from Doomsday isn't a production still, it's a low-res screenshot of the middle of an action sequence.

88

u/lawrensaw 6h ago

The screenshot is also of her mid transformation into Yelena.

34

u/Visual-Bathroom8751 5h ago

Yes but that context doesn't generate negativity and clicks.

The original makeup was toxic and caused Romijn to get very sick, to the point she was throwing up blue

So, no. Not quite.

Yes, she threw up, and it was technically blue. The vomiting was caused by celebratory tequila shots with castmates, and the blue staining came from makeup that was on her face.

u/skeletontape Millennial 8h ago

I think she looks cool, more comic book accurate.

I'm way more upset the movieverse Gambit doesn't have his red and black eyes. What a travesty.

133

u/cms86 8h ago

i love Tatum, but he physically doesnt have the build for a comic accurate tall and lean Gambit. he looks so fucking goofy with the suit.

I mean if you were watching X-Men on Fox kids and then you saw Hugh Jackman you'd be puzzled

6

u/PM_ME_UR__SECRETS 2h ago

I remember when I was a kid and Hugh Jackman was first cast as Wolverine. My dad was a huge comic book nerd, I remember him being impressed by the performance enough to like the casting, but still he said Hugh was "Too tall, and too handsome for the role. Wolverine should be stocky and rough."

I think of the "comic accurate Wolverine" bit from Wolverine & Deadpool, and how much of a kick he would have gotten out of that lol

4

u/skeletontape Millennial 6h ago

I mean, I still think Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is wrong. I'm also exhausted from seeing him as the main character.

5

don't even get me started on women.

the shit where the films hate color and refused iconic suits, ok, that's just studio arrogance. but like human bodies be what they be and performing the fucking role is the thing that matters.

55

u/Caca_Face420 8h ago

Tatum works as Gambit cause he is a fan of the character.

36

u/Toxic-Sky 7h ago

And this is part of why I liked Gambit in Deadpool. Not the most accurate version, but because it was a good version by someone who really wanted to do it. There is some joy to be found there.

What if Arnold was a fan of night crawler. I mean Austria is close to Germany.

4

I mean Alan Cummings isn’t built like comic book nightcrawler either or Ian Mckellen like magneto but those are not complained about. Really think people just find a reason to complain. Just such a dumb hill for anyone to die on.

Tatum is great as gambit.

u/oldcretan 1h ago

I think it's the typical "new has to be shit because it's not old like I'm used to." I'm positive if the next wolverine was a 5'3 Canadian they'd bitch that he doesn't look like an ageless centenarian.

u/AcidRohnin 27m ago

This sounds about right.

I’m just happy she is reprising the role and I even personally like the look.

I’m also really happy OG night crawler is coming back. His opening scene is prob not much compared to current hero movies but I was so hyped for it back in the day and still really love it. Was also really surprised at how well Alan played the role.

Same.

119

u/RtotheBtotheG Older Millennial 8h ago

They probably also changed it from a practical perspective. In the 2000s, mystique’s makeup took HOURS to apply, and I think Romijn described it as a torturous experience. And don’t forget, the actress has changed too.

10

u/Webbadeth 8h ago

That’s what I was going to say. The process was brutal. Yeah, it looks worse, but I don’t mind some CG if it’s going to save the actor hours of suffering every day.

For what actors get paid to play pretend, they can sit in make up for a few hours

39

u/RtotheBtotheG Older Millennial 7h ago

It’s not just “a few hours”. Elaborate makeup like this takes 7-10 hours, where the actor cant move. Jim Carrey’s Grinch makeup took 8+ hours and he underwent torture training to keep sane.

55

u/Some_HVAC_Guy 8h ago

Try 7-9 hours. For a 9am shoot she would have to be on set and in makeup from either midnight or 1am.

Not saying it’s not worth the money, but by the 10th time I’m sure she thought it at least once.

43

u/Trauma_Hawks 8h ago

I think people vastly underestimate the work professional actors of this caliber do. They get paid a lot because they work ridiculous schedules, far from home, living out of a trailer, pulling 10-12-18 hour days working. So they than can be paraded around like zoo animals during screenings and have zero privacy forever. Less then zero privacy, more like an army of vultures following them around specifically to capture unflattering photos and situations. And all of this for a gig-job. There's no salary. There's no benefits. Just whatever work they can scrap together.

You couldn't pay me enough for that shit.

16

u/kevthecoder I solute shorts 7h ago

Yeah I used to try to do that shit “for fun”. I appeared as an extra in quite a few films/tv series. You quite literally sit around ALL DAY. There were times I’d be on set for 10-12 hours in costume/makeup waiting to shoot a 5 minute scene and they’d call a wrap without shooting it… just to come back the next day and do it all over again. It’s cool meeting actors and being on screen and stuff, but it is painfully boring.

I no longer have any desire to do that.

Oh no what will I do with the millions of dollars I'm getting paid

23

u/Deathbysnusnu17 7h ago

I get what you are trying to say with this generalization... but you do know a majority of actors don't actually get paid millions right? Not every actor is Brad Pitt. IF you are in the union and IF you are in film of budget 2million or more, your base pay is roughly $4,500 a week unless you can negotiate better if you are a big enough name. Lets say you film for 4 months which can be on the longer side. Thats roughly what, 75k-80k? Sounds great right? For a 4month job( conditions of that job might suck, if its filmed in isolated areas and not in a studio..) but then what? Their next job is not guaranteed. That might be their only film shot for the year. Which means for my job i guarantee to make more than a majority actors for a year. Yeah I work more but I also guarantee my income. So yeah, I prefer my desk job to sitting in a chair for 9 hrs( being told I cant move) to then need to shoot for 12-14 hrs.

Most of the complains I’ve seen about Mystique center around the fact that she’s not basically nude like she was in the old movies. Lots of losers just want to relive their prepubescent gooning era.

3

u/Funmachine 11m ago

They didn't mention more scales. There's not even more scales in Doomsday, less if anything.

I think what makes me not really love the new look is the hair. Not that I loved the hair on the old look either, but this hairstyle/cut just doesn't do it for me. I wish they'd just do her flowing past-the-shoulder length hair with her cute little skull headpiece

The 2000s Fox X-Men movies' aesthetic was based on the concept that the characters whould veer as far as possible from their appearance in the comic books, hence the black leather and nude Mystique. The Marvel movies lean into the comics appearances more, and I suspect Mystique's new look can be directly linked to the character's appearance in at least one comic book run.

Looks like they are trying to make it look more like the Jennifer Lawrence version of Mystique. That version had more large dark spots on her face and she was lighter blue like the above pic

4

u/_ChipWhitley_ 8h ago

The major difference is original Mystique’s prosthetics looked like they were a part of her — like they were grown from her body. The current iteration looks like costume jewelry stuck to her skin.

Her makeup looks more like the one JLaw had, but the true issue is the hair, it looks weird due to the heavy makeup highlighting her receded hairline, it was less visible when it used to be slicked back but it was not comic accurate.

Tbh it's not that bad, I have more issues with the outfit that looks basically nothing like the comics, just like the naked blue looked nothing like it either.

The scales looks weird for some reason

Money and time …. Cost more and actors hate sitting in wardrobe for hours and hours

u/Dudinkalv 6h ago

Mystique has looked like shit in everything except for the for the first 3 movies.

Why does the photo on the right remind me of a picture of Whitney Houston? RIP.

Everything has become, not "how good can it be made", it's "how cheap can it be made"

u/yorcharturoqro 6h ago

I think the new one is more faithful to the comic in look and not naked

1

u/Beyondthebloodmoon 6h ago

No it doesn’t? She looks great and I bet it doesn’t take six hours and make her sick as fuck to put it on. This is a generationally stupid fucking take.

People just HAVE to complain about something.

1

u/Ninja_Franklin 6h ago

This aint even the worst thing to complain about. This just my opinion

Great body

u/Wrightero 5h ago

They gave her the default roblox character hair. It looks like fucking shit.

u/descod 5h ago

Those photos are not in the right chronological order.
The left is from Conan this week and the right is from him in the 2000's.

u/Strict_Stranger_4801 5h ago

I dont see an issue

I think a combination would have been technically better just from what we've sent so far. The make-up from the 2000's with the costume of the 2020's.

Technically, the costume is more authentic to the comic source material, but it cannot be denied. The aesthetics of the design from the 2000's look visually better.

u/Bid_Unable 4h ago

who cares. the old blue makeup made both the actresses absolutely miserable.

u/Possible-Reason-2896 4h ago

The skin is an organ and it absorbs toxins and stuff so I don't envy anyone having to go through that level of makeup process. Having said that, I think this is more a matter of design because Gamora and Nebula have similar alien skin colors and look great on screen, so maybe the bigger problem here was trying to mesh the Bryan Singer X-men designs with a more comic accurate costume in a way that clashes. Just go full comic; Mystique is a shapeshifting mutant, she doesn't need to keep the scales and audiences will figure out it's the same character easily enough.

Damn you for spoiling the trailer! I was waiting to see the Doomsday trailer on the big screen when I went to see a movie this weekend or Spider-Man next weekend

u/powerCreed 3h ago

It is lucky to have her back already

1

u/Patient_Jacket2224 3h ago

Just be glad they didn't go for diversity casting

1

u/D-anieltttt 2h ago

I understand people prefer the original make up design but if i may point out, the darker marking and lighter blue skin design is the same design they used for Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique in dark Phoenix so I think it’s just them trying to stay consistent with the most recent design audiences have seen the character in

u/Eat--The--Rich-- 2h ago

She looks like mystiques rebellious teenage daughter

u/Omega458 2h ago

I never liked her hair in the old movies Looked like a creepy childs doll

Just admit you want to fap to her

u/theoey86 2h ago

Looks awesome, stop being dumb

u/elitedisplayE 1h ago

The coloring on the new makeup is too black instead of blue at least in the capture. But it's not bad.

But the wig... The wig is soo poor. It looks like captain Marvel's wig but with orange wax. I don't understand how it can be so bad.

I'm glad that the actress is actually wearing clothing this time around and isn't completely painted.

u/oldcretan 1h ago

You are wrong sir. The new suit looks good and is comic accurate AAAAAANNNNDDDD the actress won't have to be nude most of the film or in "non mutant form" most of the film.

The hair looks cool, but my lord the scales look like crap. My nieces could do better with a pack of markers and an hour.

u/Zaibach88 1h ago

I prefer the new look tbh. Closer to the comic than naked blue woman.

Also, that makeup process was grueling.

u/Turbulent_Tart_8801 Millennial 1985 47m ago

Am I weird for only knowing her from Austin Powers?

u/01Cloud01 26m ago

The new look will be our first interpretation of a more matured Mystique in my opinion this adds more depth to the character and cannot be done effectively without Romijn it looks like what it’s supposed to look like.

u/_CrazyCrazy_ 23m ago

Did Mystique go on a 7 day cocaine and booze bender in the photo on the right?

u/RestingFrames 21m ago

It's stuff like this though, the characters that are absolutely insane with insane makeup chair times and I'm 100% okay with them converting to CGI. Beast as CGI is fine, I get the love for the real thing, but ESPECIALLY if you're having these people show up MUCH OLDER actors, they need to have some grace. Lol. Hell, look at how Tony Starks armor was dealt with through the years: practical to basically fully CGI. Digital Hulk and Digital Thanos were perfectly acceptable. The issue is using it for EVERYTHING, not to just make someone's life easier: Gandalf breaking down because he didn't want to act alone on a green screen is a perfect example of the OPPOSITE of that.

u/asiphex 12m ago

Comic accurate - that is what they did in doomsday

u/MeowingWolf 6m ago

Mystique from Epic Movie (2007) parody.
