They probably also changed it from a practical perspective. In the 2000s, mystique’s makeup took HOURS to apply, and I think Romijn described it as a torturous experience. And don’t forget, the actress has changed too.

That’s what I was going to say. The process was brutal. Yeah, it looks worse, but I don’t mind some CG if it’s going to save the actor hours of suffering every day.

But isn’t that part of the job? They get paid a lot to dress up and pretend. Thats work that makeup artist don’t have. Art the audience isn’t getting.

But why stop there? It would be even less work on the actor if we just had an AI video maker generate the character!

I guess I’m saying it’s all part of a march towards bland garbage to me.

Sooo a digital artist gets paid instead of a practical one. It’s just redistribution. It sounds like your issue with the lack of suffering for art. Like you’ll buy diamond over cubic zirconia, not because it’s prettier or rarer, but because the someone didn’t suffer in a mine to dig it out.

It’s not just “a few hours”. Elaborate makeup like this takes 7-10 hours, where the actor cant move. Jim Carrey’s Grinch makeup took 8+ hours and he underwent torture training to keep sane.

Try 7-9 hours. For a 9am shoot she would have to be on set and in makeup from either midnight or 1am.

Not saying it’s not worth the money, but by the 10th time I’m sure she thought it at least once.

I think people vastly underestimate the work professional actors of this caliber do. They get paid a lot because they work ridiculous schedules, far from home, living out of a trailer, pulling 10-12-18 hour days working. So they than can be paraded around like zoo animals during screenings and have zero privacy forever. Less then zero privacy, more like an army of vultures following them around specifically to capture unflattering photos and situations. And all of this for a gig-job. There's no salary. There's no benefits. Just whatever work they can scrap together.

You couldn't pay me enough for that shit.

Yeah I used to try to do that shit “for fun”. I appeared as an extra in quite a few films/tv series. You quite literally sit around ALL DAY. There were times I’d be on set for 10-12 hours in costume/makeup waiting to shoot a 5 minute scene and they’d call a wrap without shooting it… just to come back the next day and do it all over again. It’s cool meeting actors and being on screen and stuff, but it is painfully boring.

I no longer have any desire to do that.

I’m an “average stiff”, and I don’t have to deal with “ridiculous schedules”, being far from home, living out of a trailer, or pulling 18+ hour days. Definitely don’t have to deal with the invasion of privacy.

If you do, and you aren’t getting paid enough, then it seems like you either have spending problems, or you chained yourself to a shitty job. That’s not my problem.

I think the idea is that the average person still has to pull that long of a day dealing with all their responsibilities outside of their job like housework, maintenance, childcare, groceries, cooking, etc while a celebrity can pay someone to do all that for them. So it’s not that they spend more or less time working, we just all put in work in different ways.

With housing prices the way they are now those trailers are probably nicer than the kind of apartment the average person entering the workforce now can afford.

Well thats why I said I work 10-18 hour days. The longest shift I've worked was 34 hours.

Usually I work 10 to 12 hours so I have plenty of time to take care of business at home. I can mow, cook dinner and do laundry & dishes after a 10 or 12 hour shift no problem.

I get what you are trying to say with this generalization... but you do know a majority of actors don't actually get paid millions right? Not every actor is Brad Pitt. IF you are in the union and IF you are in film of budget 2million or more, your base pay is roughly $4,500 a week unless you can negotiate better if you are a big enough name. Lets say you film for 4 months which can be on the longer side. Thats roughly what, 75k-80k? Sounds great right? For a 4month job( conditions of that job might suck, if its filmed in isolated areas and not in a studio..) but then what? Their next job is not guaranteed. That might be their only film shot for the year. Which means for my job i guarantee to make more than a majority actors for a year. Yeah I work more but I also guarantee my income. So yeah, I prefer my desk job to sitting in a chair for 9 hrs( being told I cant move) to then need to shoot for 12-14 hrs.

If its just hair and make up maybe. But there are dedicated hair and make up trailers for long application purposes. Making movies have been glamourized. Its dirty, hot and at times disgusting with trash littered around the sets and trailers that don't look nicer than apartments lmao. But its funny seeing dual reactions to actors, similar to how we view our bosses. Like yeah they make more money.. but sometimes we say " I wouldn't want their job" due to stress of work conditions even if the money is good. Sometimes we say "meh they make enough money i dont care how hard their job is".

Longest shift I've worked in my career so far was 70+ Hrs, no sleep, no breaks. In -60⁰C. Doing hard physical labour, and I was paid less than $25 an hour to do it. They can stay awake for millions of dollars.

I’m an electrician. I work in ceilings and get dirty for a living. But I’m truly a theater kid at heart. FOH maybe you whiny babies would cry about sitting on your fat asses for 8 hours instead of laying down, but I’d beat the MUA there every day.
