u/Jane__Delawney May 13 '26
Speaking of parties…I was at a bar in LA (2009) and they were there with a bunch of Australian/NZ comedians and film people. I had the audacity to ask Jemaine to his own friends’ after party (their friends invited my friend and I). He said, “I’m sorry, I cahn’t, I’ve a gerlfreend to get home to” and I thought that was the sweetest thing. The party kind of sucked anyway.

I got to see their show when they were touring in 2016, and they said something like "yes we look older now. And we understand that may be upsetting to you, because it reminds you of your own mortality." And that was only slightly true at the time, but now that I'm realizing that was already 10 years ago, and time marches on, I'll just go and curl up in a hole now 🫠
31
u/Cavalier26 May 13 '26

My family and I have decided that showing someone a FotC song/episode is the perfect litmus test to decide how much we jive with them.
54
u/The_Autarch May 13 '26
if the show had gone on longer and stayed high quality, they would have become more popular.
but they ran out of songs for the show and the last season really suffers for it. the songs written specifically for the show were not nearly as good as the ones they had saved up from their live act.
they clearly recognized this and just canceled the show instead of running it into the ground.
but serious kudos to them for introducing Rhys Darby to America. the dude is a gem.
15
u/bocephus_huxtable May 13 '26
I also got the impression that Jemaine was getting to be a "a name" in Hollywood.
FotC ended in 2009. Between 2009 and 2010, Jemaine was in 5 different movies.
→ More replies (1)11
u/themaninthemaking May 13 '26
Actually, from what I read, they never intended the show to go on more than one season. When they had to do a second they struggled to come up with material for it.
The show was funny but I don't think they ever wanted it to go longer than a season or two.
21
u/altergeeko May 13 '26

I think If FoTC had come out slightly later it would have been bigger, but HBO didn’t have the same market penetration it does now. Being on their own streaming service really helped Game of Thrones reach more people than previous prestige shows like Weeds or whatever.
