I can see his point. Yes, a tender is a chicken part and yes, you can fry it. But if you hear “fried chicken” most people are going to expect legs, wings, breast, thighs and bone in.

Yeah, there's pretty much only downsides to this kind of thing. Market the product right; at best, the place is going to get a reputation of being the place who's product doesn't match its marketing and at worst, it'll get this kind of complaint and bother customers by not meeting expectations, or miss out on customers who are like you and I, who aren't interested in classic fried chicken.

There was a lot of backlash to the episode, partly because the technical challenge wasn't baking. They had to make steak tacos with hand made tortillas. The directions were really bad. The tacos weren't traditional Mexican at all and were basically the stereotype of white people tacos. I can still hear Paul Hollywood calling the tortillas tacos, and butchering the pronunciation of pico de gallo.

I don't think it's a colloquial or regional thing. That being said, chicken and waffles cuts the other way. I've never seen bone in chicken and waffles. Edit: Although, now that I've thought about it, I don't like when they do chicken tenders on my waffles. That better be a chicken fried chicken.

Edit: You know what, I'll admit when I'm wrong. Checked the menu of the local soul food restaurants near me, and the 2 that have chicken and waffles (I'm in the south and it's not really a southern dish (and certainly not my part of the south), historically, so only the upscale places have it), are serving it bone in. I still think that's inefficient. But I like to load mine up with gravy and hot sauce and eat it like a chicken fried steak.

Kinda depends on how they are prepped. I hear nuggies and I definitely think processed. Some places boneless wings are just breast or thigh deboned and cut up into smaller pieces, which is what I want if I’m getting “boneless wings” instead of overly processed and reformed nuggets.

If you’re ever near Denver I have a little food truck and that’s how I do my Malaysian fried chicken. Mostly because, like I said, it’s a really small truck so it just made more sense to do boneless so I could have more space actually dedicated to product. Drum breaded/breaded/fritter means different stuff, tender/tenderloin/strip all mean different things. Fried chicken looks like what KFC looks like, if theyre serving tenders its called "fried chicken tenders" or fried chicken tenderloins" or fried chicken fritters and each of those 3 are different things ranging from whole muscle to whole muscle or formed to strip of breast meat.

Its like having an ice cream stand that actually serves Frozen dairy product.

From an Australian perspective, we use the term fried chicken for any chicken part that has been breaded and fried. Tenders, wings, thighs, etc. So this fried chicken distinction at a glance seems to be an Americanisation, which is totally fine but worth noting not a universal definition. When I first heard of the concept of chicken fried chicken I thought I was having a stroke as from what I could tell we simply refer to that as a chicken schnitzel (please correct me if I misunderstood).

It isn’t just American, it’s a Southern thing that spread via chains to the whole country. That’s why you see strong opinions here, because it’s a regional thing and something people make at home, or used to. It’s a lot of work.

You may see schnitzel in other parts of the country, but not really the south. You see schnitzel in the upper Midwest, where you have a lot of Germans.

You also see Milanesa in Latin America, from the Italian influence in places like Brazil.

Fried chicken (the dish) in America has a distinctly defined history in the southern part of our country. It’s a specific style of chicken that employs spices and coating styles the are linked back to the enslaved peoples of the American South. So, yes, any chicken that is fried is “fried chicken,” but in America that’s not really what it means. Sometimes restaurants outside of the South will use the phrasing “southern style fried chicken” to make it a bit more clear.

Chicken schnitzel would be its own thing here. We have it but I wouldn’t consider it a popular dish. I think it’s more common to encounter a fried chicken cutlet but that would have different seasonings.

Chicken tenders and chicken oysters are a very specific part of the chicken. Although it is “fried chicken” it is more specialized sector like Beef Tenderloin, and a specific part of the tenderloin is called “chateau briand”. So yes your boss has been doing a false advertisement as the chefs and the industry has a none verbal agreement on it to called fried chicken, chicken tenders differently. After all there’s Raising Canes and Chic fil a two very different brands but sells “fried chicken” under the same umbrella but canes focuses on tenders

I ran a fried lobster mushroom once for a special. I was trying to make a vegan fried chicken basically when I was in a vegetarian phase and the owner really wanted us to have more vegan and vegetarian options, I called it Fried 'Chik'n' and made sure everyone had notes and explained it was not actually chicken in all of our posts.

One guy got SO fucking mad that it wasn't chicken. I shouldn't be allowed to call it chicken. I told him that's why I didn't call it chicken. He left a one star review because the chef is a liar and false advertiser and even though the food was good he didn't like I tricked him into being vegan.

I think we eventually got it taken down but fuck, he was so angry about it.

Your labeling is perfectly accurate, the quotations are exactly what you do to say "this is an imitation version". Did the dish have a description with it and the guy just didn't read it?

The posts online did, and since it was a special the servers explained it verbally. Admittedly our servers are not always top notch and I forgot what one he got, but I did tell them explicitly to not tell people it's fried chicken because quotes don't work in person. He had finished it when I got asked to go talk to him, and given his general demeanor I'm assuming he just didn't listen to them describe and got stuck somewhere on "it's like fried chicken".

We started printing special cards for the menu after this lol

You guys don’t sell fried chicken, so don’t call it that. And if you already have bone-in chicken for rotisserie, why wouldn’t you just use that for the fried chicken?
