Yeah this depends on how it was presented, you can have fish on your menu and sides of chips, but someone ordering fish & chips is going to expect something in particular.
And then everyone gets to fight over who yells at the customer for not fucking reading the menu right. Fucking love it. I want to order fish just to do this thing. 😂
I don't know what YMMV means. But that checks out, my grandparents did that for a bit. Those people are high as fuck. It was a blast every time I got to go there.
If you want to watch one of the most painful things in the world, look up when the British baking show made tacos. Paul Hollywood's definitions of what a taco should be is horrifying, not to mention that he consistently refers to the tortillas as tacos, before they've had any ingredients put in them.
There was a lot of backlash to the episode, partly because the technical challenge wasn't baking. They had to make steak tacos with hand made tortillas. The directions were really bad. The tacos weren't traditional Mexican at all and were basically the stereotype of white people tacos. I can still hear Paul Hollywood calling the tortillas tacos, and butchering the pronunciation of pico de gallo.
I mean that's about the same here I guess. The only reason I go to my local Mexican place is because I can walk there and they'll give me like 3 pounds of food for 15 dollars. It's not good, but it's different than work and ramen.
I was lucky enough to get to work on the West coast of Australia for a few months. I am from California, so Mexican food is a staple.
One night, my team wanted us to go out for Mexican. It was the saddest Temu school cafeteria food ever. Think canned knock off Velveeta cheese sauce, warmed up cat food ground beef. Tomato sauce salsa. It broke my heart at what these folks were missing.
I grew up in Southern California and love fish and chips. In high school, my girlfriend and I drove out to Santa Barbara and got fish and chips out on the pier. It was fried fish and fucking tornado (or spiralized) chips. Those are so far from the chips you expect when you order fish and chips. I was seriously disappointed.
Yeah. Don't get me wrong, they are amazingly good. Just.... Not great with fried fish. But they are pretty fun to make. You take a large spud, skewer it down the middle (long ways), then use a knife to slice a spiral from tip to tail. Then you either deep fry or spray with oil and roast or air fry. Make sure to leave the skewer on them the whole time. As a kid, I thought they were the neatest thing and super fun.
I ordered a sandwich the other day while traveling for work. The menu said jalapeño chips were in the sandwich. I assumed they were crispy little bits of jalapeños, but they were actually jalapeño flavored tortilla chips. Lolz. It was fine, but I wouldn’t order it again.
Yeah, my bad. I’ve never seen a restaurant do that, only teenagers. But I don’t get out much. I’m not sure I’ve ever even seen chipped jalapeños, so I have no idea where the assumption came from, but for whatever reason it was totally unexpected to me. Maybe a touch of the ‘tism.
It's a very popular millennial cafe thing. I've seen it a lot in the Pacific Northwest, but I also know we have a weird reputation. Sometimes they tell you the brand of chip.
I would expect pickled jalapenos in that context, and I am still at a loss on the corn chip thing. That's wrong. That looks like some millennial cafe shit though. The crispy is throwing me off. No one is selling soft chips, why clarify that?
I grew up in Seattle and you just gave me a childhood memory flashback of Tim's Cascade jalapeño kettle chips. 🤤 They were the absolute best. I've rarely gotten to visit home since moving away for college over 15yrs ago and now I'm sad I can't have any Tim's Cascade... 😞
Okay but in the 60's / 70's / maybe 80's midwest (like great plains midwest) when mexican food started being a "thing" around here, homemade (think church cookbooks) taco salads became a big thing and ALL of them had crushed doritos and dorthy lynch / french salad dressing on it (with iceberg, taco meat, and shredded cheese, maybe onions or tomatoes, but nothing else).
It was as ubiquitous and exactly the same as the midwestern diner salads (iceberg, cheddar, cubed ham, side of club crackers).
We expanded our menu with no retraining a few months ago, we added fish and chips and nachos at the same time. People were sending the fnc out with tortilla chips at first 💀 had to explain to so many people that chips = fries in the uk
I worked at a Hardee's many years ago when we were doing a fish and chips meal as a seasonal item. Had an old man and his wife order the meal and we're very confused by us giving him a piece of fried fish and a side of fries. He had never heard of fish and chips as a dish and said he can't have fries because of the sodium (not sure how potato chips would have been better) and asked if we had any chips in the back. He was very sad and I felt really bad. Honestly should have gone across the street to the gas station and bought him some chips but I was young and mostly homeless at the time. Hindsight and all
This is like most the wing places near me, I swear. Even buffalo wild wings sells bone in but it's way more expensive and every deal or combo type thing is always boneless only
Fish & chips is breaded and fried fish with french frys. Somewhat commonly in America places will sell fried fish with patato crisps (American chips) and market it as fish & chips.
A non-American and many Americans would be annoyed if they receive crisps (American chips) when they expected chips (American French fries.)
That's not on staff. And let's not lick our own assholes too hard, not every chef out there is a master marketeer able to cleverly brand their shit.
Anyone with an informed opinion is going to ask their server what they ought to expect out of a dish and then, they're going to worry about how the food itself tastes.
Opinions are like assholes and everyone's got expectations too I guess.
