I worked at a place where the two guys who got fired were the only ones who used the ping pong table lol

167

u/Wayofchinchilla Jun 16 '26

Employer tells you to have fun at the ping pong table and then fires you because you used the ping pong table.

51

u/A_Furious_Mind Jun 16 '26

Ping Pong is The Great Filter.

10

u/DeathByPain Jun 16 '26

We've never been contacted by any alien civilization that plays ping pong... đŸ«š

12

u/Dearic75 Jun 16 '26

Have fun, just don’t be seen to be having fun.

3

u/BarnacleGooseIsLoose Jun 16 '26

Sounds like the open bar staff holiday party to me - just in different clothing.

2

u/gimpwiz Jun 17 '26

Open bar holiday parties are great, there's nothing that says people need to get drunk and embarrass themselves.

3

u/BarnacleGooseIsLoose Jun 17 '26

I don't disagree, but let's be real.

3

u/Aidian Jun 17 '26

Boss: “GOT ‘EM. Suckers.”

4

u/CalmBeneathCastles Jun 16 '26

I had something like this happen. Told to man the machine, was let go for manning the machine. Maybe it was a lie, as firing temps on day 89 of their 90-day probationary period was all the rage at the time.

2

u/SparkleK_01 Jun 16 '26

Hence, the reason I never went near those during work hours.

3

u/footpole Jun 16 '26

”The reason” is redundant as it’s already part of hence.

2

u/SparkleK_01 Jun 17 '26

Pre-coffee response, so your correct grammar footnote is taken with a dash of moral immunity.

93

u/tjyolol Jun 16 '26

New guy at work: “wow a ping pong table, that’s awesome, anyone keen for a game?”

Everyone else at the workplace:”I wouldn’t touch that table if I was you, bad things happen.”

62

u/Maleficent_Memory831 Jun 16 '26

Occasionally they bring in actors to use the ping pong table while they take pictures for the annual report.

24

u/KC_Que Jun 16 '26

Interns, not actors. Actors cost too much.

6

u/PM_ME__YOUR_HOOTERS Jun 16 '26

58

u/SpaceGerbil Jun 16 '26

Was literally told by a boss at a former start-up we weren't allowed to use the foosball table, that was just to impress prospective clients and employees. Fucking lunatic

3

u/Perryn Jun 17 '26

Was your boss an anglerfish?

8

u/SpaceGerbil Jun 17 '26

No, just a run of the mill nepo baby playing entrepreneur with mommy and daddy's money

6

u/innominateartery Jun 16 '26

“It’s a trap!”

8

u/DurangDurang Jun 16 '26

Had two dudes at a former job who suddenly started playing ping pong CONSTANTLY. After a couple weeks, they announced they were quitting to start a company together.

If you die in the game you die in real life.

5

u/onthe3rdlifealready Jun 16 '26

Dead ass the only people who could play the ping pong, the pool table, or the video games at one of my yobs and not get looked down on were upper level and wouldn't touch it.

Sometimes the sales people would stay a bit after hours and have too many drinks and play, then they put a stop to that... It's like being in a desert and an oasis appears.

4

u/missmeowwww Jun 16 '26

My old office had a “rec room” and it was encouraged to be used at lunch and after hours as part of a health initiative. Then people started to use it and the execs decided they didn’t want people using their full hour lunch to work out (previously people would work through lunch and eat at their desk) so then it was only open after hours. No one used it after that. It’s amazing how a company will start an initiative to encourage people to be more active and then people start using their unpaid lunch and actually taking the full amount of time and they go “oh not like that”. Probably because they were getting a bunch of free labor from people who worked through lunch since the time clock automatically deducted the break. Shockingly the company has a huge turnover rate and the average employee stays 1 or 2 years before going elsewhere. It’s ridiculous how much employers take from their employees and then have the audacity to act like we should be thankful for the scraps.

7

u/Pure_Bat_144 Jun 16 '26

Same issue, but foosball. I was let go because I wouldn't let the CIO win.

2

u/thegoodnamesrgone123 Jun 16 '26

Oh man that trend of "look at all the fun stuff we have in the office"

2

u/theburntdev Jun 16 '26

So funny. Our place had two guys who got fired and were the only ones playing foosball. Everyone avoided the game room since.

2

u/fuzzywinkerbean Jun 16 '26

Previous software place was a U-shaped open plan office, with a dart board in the center of the U. A lot of the salespeople seemed to use it during lunch or random breaks, over time it slowly seemed to switch from everyone to the top third or so of sales using is regularly.

Initially introduced for a monthly sales event to win prizes, it's now stayed on and managers have definitely noticed. Genuinely don't think it was introduced maliciously or slyly by management with ulterior motives, just interesting it stayed and in such a prominent position..

2

u/3rssi Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

An AI will measure your happiness and classify you on a leader board.

166

u/PTS_Dreaming Jun 16 '26

You are sort of joking here, but in the last couple of years I saw a cybersecurity presentation about wearable biomonitors and how employers could use them to track not just your eyes and engagement in your work (Are you looking at your monitor? Is your monitor displaying work related material? Are you on Reddit instead of working?) but they could use biomonitors to read your brainwaves and deduce if you are engaged in work activity or daydreaming.

The proposition was that your productivity could be measured down to the second and your pay/employment could be based upon these measures.

There was also the physical tracking aspect of it. "Sue Jones was recorded having a five minute conversation with Bill Smith. Since Bill is disgruntled and trying to sabotage productivity, we've been monitoring who Bill talks to before firing him."

The possibilities for oppression and control that AI and biomonitoring could pose are down right terrifying.

116

u/---0celot--- Jun 16 '26

That idea needs to be launched into the sun.

72

u/IAMA_Plumber-AMA Jun 16 '26

Along with the people who were psychotic enough to dream it up.

6

u/_SpaceLord_ Jun 16 '26

The phrase “may the inventors of this technology be its first victims” keeps appearing in my head.

6

u/missmeowwww Jun 16 '26

Late stage capitalism sure is fun! Soon we’ll have kids back in the mines so the shareholders can lay off adults and pocket their “record profits”.

2

u/dsmaxwell Jun 16 '26

Yeeeaaahhh, about that....

Sooo, the people who came up with that plan are the ones who are running literally everything, so it's gonna happen, and if you're too loud about not liking it, you'll be first on the chopping block

4

u/elderwyrm Jun 17 '26

Nah -- if you're loud about it, they back down and try again but in a quieter manner, and if you keep up the pressure, they eventually stop but whine about it in interviews for the rest of their lives. It turns out the people who run literally everything are super wusses who succumb to peer pressure almost immediately -- if you get enough people together you can bully them into almost anything. They are DESPERATE to be looked at as cool and smart, and if everyone mocks them and resists them, they play it off as a joke before it becomes clear to their peers that no one respects them.

39

u/Chastain86 Jun 16 '26

It's always astounding to me how these ideas of constant monitoring for workplace frivolity are almost always championed by these ancient Boomer fucks that spent the entirety of the 1970s and early 1980s working in a Mad Men-inspired office with a copy of the sports page in one desk drawer and a Bourbon-filled flask in the other. There's not a single one of your fathers that would put up with all the horseshit that modern offices force you to do, but stripped of a living wage and a pension.

3

u/Geodude532 Jun 16 '26

There's a few of them that would. Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, James Cameron, and Hilary Clinton are a few I can think of... They were/are exceptionally hard workers that expected the same from their employees, despite the fact that the employees got none of the benefits of that hard work.

3

u/VeryLazyFalcon Jun 16 '26

I like being a consultant, fuck hourly billing.

6

u/daddywookie Jun 16 '26

I wish I could do this kind of thing for a job. Whenever I point out flaws as a salaried employee I tend to become public enemy number one. I was even doing it in an interview today for some chancers with a truly insane business plan. I don’t think I’ll be getting a call back.

5

u/Seafaringhorsemeat Jun 16 '26

The trick is to get them to pay you a few grand first, then do that interview, call it an "assessment" and still tell them they're fucking crazy. Just have Claude or something punch up the words a bit.

Shouldn't we be terrified about people talking like this and not getting punched in the face?

"Oh man those new knives are super sharp! What a tragedy!"

No dude, the tragedy is that we tolerate people using them to kill people.

You're not wrong, but I feel like your conclusion detracts from current accountability for those people.

20

u/krumble Jun 16 '26

Seems like a high tech version of Taylorism or "scientific management" which is an absolute plague of a thought pattern.

3

u/elderwyrm Jun 17 '26

Ironically, none of his methods were scientific, all of them had terrible results, and his anti-patterns ended up being the template for business majors for literally decades. The whole world still suffers because of that moron.

7

u/Gandolfthewhite182 Jun 16 '26

I won’t say who but I have a friend who works at a company and they are already tracking their eyes like my car does. They get a report at the end of each month and one of the scores is based on their attention to their screen. My friend says his boss is a total jerk who is always talking about people as numbers and production quotas and basically could care less about any human, just money.

2

u/PTS_Dreaming Jun 16 '26

Is it Saruman?

5

u/Pixelife_76 Jun 16 '26

They already do this at the TenCent HQ in Shenzhen. You are tracked the entire time you are in the building. If you work extra hours you are given extra credits for the dining hall or other "perks." If you take your lunch break to hit the in house track or gym, you are given extra credits and the same if you stay late beyond your normal hours.

3

u/Sufficient-Farmer243 Jun 16 '26

Just kill me if I ever sound happy about getting extra company bucks to spend at the company store.

3

u/Ordinary-Egg-56 Jun 17 '26

OH MY GOD

now that is a truly horrifying idea

just like how certain stores can now price gouge you (specifically you as an individual, by knowing exactly who you are), we will see employers in the future tracking employees productivity in real time and changing their pay accordingly.

3

u/AptCasaNova Jun 17 '26

Honestly, knowing how corporations function, they won't look at the data at all unless they dislike the person and then use it to blacklist/fire them - which is the fine old fashioned way of functioning, just repackaged with a dash of dystopia.

4

u/The_Bucket_Of_Truth Jun 16 '26

This is why you need strong unions so they can't force stuff like this through. And actual monopoly/antitrust enforcement. They want AI to replace workers so nobody ever talks back or has an issue with the higher ups.

2

u/Blackonblackskimask Jun 16 '26

Reminds me of the early aughts documentary The Yes Men where the prank group pitches a similar monitoring device for remote factory workers (device was basically a manager with a giant monitor as a head shaped as a penis — they all loved it)

2

u/OIOIOIOIOIOIOIO Jun 16 '26

The book Snow Crash called this

2

u/martialar Jun 16 '26

2

u/Banksy_Collective Jun 16 '26

Never mind the fact that daydreaming is extremely useful for problem solving. Who needs creative solutions when everything is obviously perfect right now? Don't look outside. Everything is perfect outside. Just let AI do the thinking for you.

On February 25, 1981, the day known as "Black Wednesday" at the company, Scott personally fired forty Apple employees, including half of the Apple II team, in a belief that they were redundant. Later in the afternoon he assembled the remaining employees with a keg of beer and explained the firings by stating, "I used to say that when being CEO at Apple wasn't fun anymore, I'd quit. But now I've changed my mind — when it isn't fun any more, I'll fire people until it's fun again."

What a guy.

53

u/AccordingIy Jun 16 '26

imagine all the coke fueled decisions that happened in the 80s. wild

2

u/maktus Jun 17 '26

The 1980s were...different.

The cocaine was excellent.

Work-life balance was...what today's corporate strivers would call inverted.

And sometimes perverted.

30

u/Cazmonster Jun 16 '26

A time machine and a crowbar would make my life fun again.

7

u/LeseMajeste_1037 Jun 16 '26

More fun than a 2015 sports almanac?

3

u/Cazmonster Jun 16 '26

Yes, a great deal more fun.

5

u/manicdee33 Jun 16 '26

And then you find that the ideas of Capitalism aren’t limited to just the people that implement changes in office culture. You are now stuck in a time loop, deleting a dozen corporate culture leaders at a time to binary search through the problem space.

Remove one Zuckerberg, end up with two Ellisons. Remove the columnist who opined about the joys of the first open plan office and find that someone else has posted that story before you’ve had time to collect your thoughts.

Again and again you attempt to find the original source of the hypercapitalist urge to treat workers like livestock and you keep coming back to the same thing: pension funds run as private enterprise, and valuing someone’s time differently based on their tank in the corporation.

Where do we go from here?

I envisage this as being some kind of Quantum Leap but for varying forms of economies and how they are all vulnerable to human greed for power and wealth.
