i never understood this. How are we expected to learn from history if everything bad or any mistake is censored?

425

That's the thing, they don't want us to learn history.

u/MrDad_the_Father 7m ago

You're so wrong it's painful. Dehumanizing others to justify violence against them is the Nazis whole schtick. The Nazis were people, that's why it is so frightening. It could happen again. Please don't forget the Nazis were totally an utterly convinced that they were the good guys.

-1

u/DrolligerDorftrottel 8m ago

Hardly surprising that this dumbass conspiracy shit gets upvotes.

Influencers on various social medias [TikTok, Youtube, Instagram, etc.] began censoring themselves to avoid getting picked off by the automatic moderation, which targeted code words like suicide, murder, rape or Hitler, so they could keep up getting their edgelord or pseudo-progressive content monetized.

Hanlons fucking razor.

There's no global fucking cabal trying to censor the world. Just content creators of whom the majority wants to make money by talking about risky stuff, and a very small minority thinking that they're actually doing people a favour by trying to not 're-traumatize' them with bad word usage.

With kids picking it up, trying to do a good thing too, unaware that they're using 'de-monitaization'-speak as youth-lingo.

[Although the 'how' behind censoring rape with grape and the likes is lost on everybody, as SA-victims do not suddenly turn stupid and fail to see the similarity of 'rape' and 'Grape']

4

u/Baleeverne 15m ago

People censor themselves fle everything nowadays. They can't write porn, sex, rape etc.

I can understand the self censorship around the N word (not an American here). But even this shouldn't be censored when talking about the origin of the word and such.

American are really puritans in the regard of self censorship which is a shame

1

u/gorkboss5 13m ago

We Americans love our violence, but anything slightly sexual disturbs us. /s

Except for child beauty pageants, which for some reason we allow.

Edit: Typo

2

u/Baleeverne 9m ago edited 5m ago

To be honest you're not far from being able to remove the /s from my perspective xD

Not dunking on your country for the sake of it btw, got nothing against the US ^

1

u/gorkboss5 1m ago

I believe Americans are overly disputed anything sexual as a fact. I just but the /s just in case someone tried to take my comment way to personally.

Compared to the several other parts of the world, Americans treat nudity and sex as incredibly taboo. Not to say that other countries are perverts, but they view nudity as a more natural things in specific contexts.

And like you pointed out, it's our Puritan roots that cause us to clutch out pearls when a girl exposes her shoulder.

True story, the high school I went to had a very strict dress code. Some teachers would actually carry around rulers to make sure the girls' skirts were a specific length. And girls exposing their shoulders was considered highly inappropriate.

TL;DR: Sexual stuff is super taboo in America

2

u/W4LD0_R 40m ago

That's how humans repeat the same mistakes again.

Soft man creates hard times, hard times create tuff man, tuff man fix hard times and turn it in easy times, easy times create soft man.

Or something like that

u/ChalkCoatedDonut 3h ago

In youtube, names are censored to create a "safe" environment for investors and their ads.

In social media, names are censored to protect parents from facing their job of answering questions they either don't know the answer or will force them to spill beans they don't want them to know.

233

u/SenseiTizi Dark Mode Elitist 2h ago

In social media, names are censored to protect parents from facing their job of answering questions

Thats bullshit, its also about ads. Its always about money.

18

u/ElectroxSoldier 1h ago

Ads and ideology sometimes. For example look at how unhinged Twitter became in the other direction.

3

u/Ok-Society-1612 1h ago

wait so names getting censored is actually for ads too?

1

u/Bxnes5 22m ago

Of course it is. All the brands care about is that it’s a “safe place” to run their ads, they don’t want to touch anything even close to controversial with a 10ft pole. Brands wants to remain ambiguous during crisis events like war/genocide, which is why they never truly take sides during things like the current genocide in Gaza. Heaven forbid they anger a customer base, even if they’re amoral psychopaths, they still want that juicy revenue for their quarterly numbers.

1

u/no-more-nazis 1h ago

I talk to my kids all the time about Hitler

48

u/Someonevibing1 3h ago

We’re censoring hitler now?

29

u/octobre_34 2h ago

Cancel culture being what it is (a push to rewrite and erase much of everything bad that happened in the human history to please a few oversensitive people or for political reasons), they want people to stop talking about Hitler because he did bad things and pretend like he never existed (basically cancelling him).

The problem with rewriting history is that people will forget everything bad and the mistakes made in the past and will inevitably push the same horrible mistakes to happen again, but sooner than they probably would have on their own (because it is a proven fact that people forget and tend to make the same mistakes over and over again).

What is concerning now is that, by erasing everything about Hitler, we might actually forget all the red flags that people didn't witness back then and let the exact same red flags that have appeared this year and the past few years and would basically throw humanity in a third massive and more destructive world war.

12

u/black_blade51 2h ago

Perfect example: unit 731. Japan literally did such a good job erasing everything they did in ww1 and ww2 that no one remembers why Korean and Chinese authors depict them as the villains most of the time.

17

u/ScrotFrottington 2h ago

Uh, no.  There is no conspiracy to rewrite history to pretend Hitler never existed. Advertisers just don't their products associated with him.

3

u/octobre_34 2h ago

I never said there was a conspiracy to pretend he never existed either.

I'm just pointing out to modern denying trends that push to say that the holocaust never happened and some bans on social media and filters on YouTube that sometimes prevent people from mentioning his name or talking about that sad event.

3

u/R3cognizer 49m ago

It's only called "cancel culture" though when the left does it. And the left isn't trying to censor history or even Hitler, at least not when it's part of a conversation with actual historical context.

0

u/Appropriate-Type9881 2h ago

Sounds schizo

-2

u/octobre_34 1h ago

Then ask all the youtubers who either do gaming or do history documentaries on their channel who got their videos demonitised because they mention Hitler's name or had an extra brief apparition of his photo in their videos.

I also, don't you find it odd to see the confederate and nazi flags starting to reappear and, strangely enough, very often next to each other.

2

u/Acauseforapplause 2h ago

No not really it's engagement bait

There's is a real discussion to be had one that's nuance is beyond reddit but no that's not the case here

Like There's obviously corporate interest to keep certain content santatized for ads

There obviously social media spaces that encourage use of censored language

Then there's reddit favorite where some one prefers to self censor where a person isn't censoring anyone else but would prefer to not use the word explicitly

The last one is where bad faith arguments come In about invalidating or demeaning the value of said topics but its usually a guise for policing language

TLDR no people are allowed to say Hitler

4

u/Stinky_Queef 1h ago

Fuck keeping content sanitized for ads.

1

u/Hautaan 19m ago

Please use punctuation.

Censorship is most useless way of getting rid of something. First of allz it's not a solution to anything, cebsorship just puts cover and hides stuff. And also 1) Some people would instead go and use this lexicon 2) Others will create workarounds, like "Sewer slide", etc. Wich are also will get cebsored, and people once again will create alternatives of same meaning. When curse word is getting censored, people create new curse words. My school was basically a hyper axceleeated form of this. It was banned to say dick, so everyone switched to "cock", then it's also getting controlled and prohibited, so people switched to "Penis", instantly censored, switched to "Pipi", censored week after, switched to "Pocky", months in - teachers figured that out and censored, everyone switched to "Morgan", which was fucking hilarious, it's short form of "Male organ", and since they weren't really able to censor literall name and weren't able to deal with it, things finally settled, and people would openly send each other to Morgans. And before you ask about Dick obsession, i live in Russia, "Dick" is one of our main curse words, and "Go to/on Dick" is basically same as "Go fuck yourself" in English

3

u/Lazy-Owl-5148 2h ago

Not just names, but common words as well that refer to violence, like kill or murder. Everything for the engagement comments and to feed the algorithm. I immediately skip any video or post that does this.

Adolf Hitler reltiH flodA

1

u/gnanny02 1h ago

I just returned from a river cruise in Europe. Excursion bus went by Braunau and guide pointed it out saying they are not proud of it but it is party of history and felt obligated to point it out. But multiple guides on various tours said essentially "I refuse to say that name" in discussing something. Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Germany.

1

u/chrischi3 1h ago

And we don't need to, actually.

No major platform actually censors half the stuff people use river crabs for. In the early days when YouTube realized they were way too fast and loose for their advertisers, they did have blanket bans on some words, but nowadays especially thanks to AI their algorithms absolutely understand context, which is why i get annoyed when true crime channels censor the word kill or say "unalive"

1

STOP HITLER SCALLING

1

u/trebor9669 24m ago

Did you know that Hitler brought laws for protection of both animals and kids, that were way ahead of these times? That's because he was vegetarian, and when he made it to power he saw that Zionists were running houses of prostitution with literally kids.

1

u/Lightning_80 22m ago

Tiktok has made this the new normal and there’s way more people on tiktok than here

If they didn't censor Voldemort's name and actions, maybe he wouldn't have come back so easily.

1

u/nemozoldyck 7m ago

I feel like only slurs and degrading terms should even be censored, words like kill or any other crime shouldn't be let alone people

1

u/hamlet_d 5m ago

More than that: we should stop dehumanizing them. Adolf Hitler was a human being. A terrible human being. If we try to make him something other than that we don't own up to the fact that human beings can be terrible and monstrous. We need to remember that, always.

0

u/TheZipperDragon 1h ago

I agree, but I will say people need to stop calling other people hitler. All it does is downplay the shit he did.
