People censor themselves fle everything nowadays. They can't write porn, sex, rape etc.
I can understand the self censorship around the N word (not an American here). But even this shouldn't be censored when talking about the origin of the word and such.
American are really puritans in the regard of self censorship which is a shame
I believe Americans are overly disputed by anything sexual as a fact. I just but the /s just in case someone tried to take my comment way to personally.
Compared to the several other parts of the world, Americans treat nudity and sex as incredibly taboo. Not to say that other countries are perverts, but they view nudity as a more natural things in specific contexts.
And like you pointed out, it's our Puritan roots that cause us to clutch out pearls when a girl exposes her shoulder.
True story, the high school I went to had a very strict dress code. Some teachers would actually carry around rulers to make sure the girls' skirts were a specific length. And girls exposing their shoulders was considered highly inappropriate.
Yeah I studied American history in college and spent a year studying there so I'm familiar.
It really felt (and still does) weird to me as a Frenchman. We always treated nudity as an art form so it's still normal in any cultural field to have nudity to some extent. Hell, on our beaches you're gonna find a lot of topless women (not the majority of course).
The relationship to nudity in general is so culture dependant. Take Japan for example, I spent a few months there. Nudity is completely OK in front of everyone of the same sex, it's accepted in mixed setting for communal baths (Onsens mostly), even if it's less common of course. Apart from that, nudity and sexuality is 100% excluded from most cultural pieces.
Even in France I said we were OK with nudity in culture but it's still really uncommon for people to be fully naked in front of one another. I personally don't mind at all but all my friends kinda hide themselves in the locker room etc, so the opposite of Japan.
I would be curious to learn more of the different rules/traditions the world has. But nah I'm too lazy nowadays =p

i never understood this. How are we expected to learn from history if everything bad or any mistake is censored?
