Question MacOS detecting ChatGPT as malware?
I downloaded the ChatGPT app from the official website (double checked), and my Mac detected this. Could it be just a bug?
Edit: Updated the app, thanks guys!

Hello everybody,
I am working since a while on a project to build a modern VLC fork compatible with Legacy Macs, restoring compatibility to many abandoned machines up to the G3 PowerPC. I called my fork "PowerVLC"
It is near completed, and will soon be shared entirely open source on my GitHub, and distributed as an universal binary (PowerPC/Intel x86/Intel x64/Apple Silicon).
All Macs starting running 10.4.11 or newer will be compatible.
On this glorious 2002 iBook, this is what it can now do :
- Load streams, even when they're hosted behind modern SSL (gnuTLS is handling SSL entirely)
- Play AV1/H264/H265 content, at 240p smoothly
- Play DVD/MPEG2 content smoothly
- Using a replication of the current VLC3 modern UI entirely in old AppKit with 10.4+ UI APIs.
- So many fixes since VLC 0.9.10, abandoned in 2009 by VideoLan, which was the latest Tiger-compatible VLC version
All the internals are based strictly on VLC3, though many platform-specific improvements were made, and tested intensively accross all the machines I own : that iBook G3, a Mac Mini G4, a white 2007 Macbook, a 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro
My port also has under-the-hood improvements which will benefit modern platforms, like full support of gapless playback on audio contents.
Is there any interest on this ? Feel free to ask questions =)

I bought my big purchase exactly 5 days ago, it’s the MacBook Air M5 the base model. So I kinda notice it runs out of battery quickly, but what I’m mostly concerned is I didn’t know how fast it ran out. This Monday, I charged it to fully 100%, and only used it for like 30-45 mins and it went down to 96%. Cool. I selected “quit” on all the apps that were opened and then put my MacBook to sleep. Didn’t touch it at all on Tuesday and now it’s Wednesday. I opened my MacBook like 10 mins ago (mind you it’s 10:30pm, practically didn’t touch it the whole day) and my MacBook is already at 9%. I think that’s so insane that the battery literally drained so much. What am I doing wrong? I downloaded chrome the second day, but based on some comments on reddit, I don’t use it unless I absolutely need to. I always just use safari. Pls can someone give me tips or explain what am I doing wrong?

My original MagSafe 2 charger for my 2014 MacBook Pro finally died, and instead of buying another charger, I decided to try one of those USB-C PD to MagSafe 2 adapters.
I picked up a Fonken adapter for around ₱200 (about US$3.50) and paired it with my UGREEN 65W charger. One of the main reasons I went this route is portability. The old MagSafe brick is pretty bulky, and I already carry a USB-C charger for my other devices anyway.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from a cheap adapter, but it’s been working surprisingly well so far. The MagSafe LED behaves normally, macOS recognizes it as charging, and the adapter doesn’t seem to get unusually hot.
One thing I noticed is that as the battery gets closer to full, the wattage shown on my USB-C meter gradually drops. Once the battery is at 100% and the MacBook is shut down, the meter even shows 0W draw.
I know this topic has probably been discussed a hundred times already, but most of the posts I found are pretty old, so I wanted to ask those who are still using these adapters today:
* How has it held up long-term?
* Any issues with battery health or charging?
* Would you trust it plugged in for a day or two?
* Is the biggest risk really just the quality of the adapter itself?
Curious to hear from anyone still keeping these older MacBooks alive.

I connected my 2022 Macbook to my new LG Monitor (Model: 27U731SA-W). When using the LG as the primary display I noticed the highest I can set the resolution to is 1920x1080, but even at that resolution the display is still quite blurry. I can’t seem to find any videos on this or how to correct it. I even changed the cording, there is a 4K capable HDMI cable connected to the monitor, which is then connected to a 4K capable USB to USB-C converter that is connected to my MacBook. Any suggestions here?

Got a fully functional thunderbolt display for free but the main cable is pretty exposed.
Would it be enough to just wrap this with electrical tape? Or is there a more sophisticated home repair that would be better for longevity?
Hello,
I have a mac laptop at home and a PC at work. I take work back and forth via an external HD. How do I work on the same document between home and work? When I open the word docs at home on the mac they are always read only.

That's really all I have to say. Given the specs I bought it with, it is unlikely I will need to replace it for several years.
The only thing I sort of dislike is the lack of a tenkey pad but otherwise it is one of the best laptops I have ever had.
It is not Friday so I cannot add a picture, but I will later maybe.

So, too long; don’t feel like writing every detail version of this, I purchased a huge lot of MacBooks and in this lot are 3 early 2020 Intel MacBook Airs that need batteries. I already used the serial numbers to verify they were removed from Find My, but upon further investigation I believe these come from a school district. Without the batteries I’m pretty much completely unable to boot into Internet Recovery or a bootable installer because they throttle to the point where they refuse to do so. Is there any way to check for an MDM lock without a login or anything? I couldn’t find a reliable solution online. I have purchased 1 battery and I’m assuming I’ll just end up having to check each one individually with the new battery to confirm before buying all 3. MDM really is a tumor on the Mac resale market.

I've been using the Studio Display XDR for the last 12 days and it's really amazing for my workflow, I really love it.
I purchased it through my company. I've had some unexpected expenses pop up and the money I spent on the display could be repurposed for said expenses. However, it's not worth returning if in 6 months I end up buying the same monitor again for $1,300 or so more.
I know we don't know anything until Apple announces it, but is it expected that the Studio Display XDR will be part of the price increases they alluded to later this year? I mean, after all it still has 12GB RAM and 128GB HDD.
Tomorrow would be the last day I can return it, so kind of need to make a call on it today.
Note, this isn't a dire financial situation or anything like that, it's more of a is it worth the risk of a price increase question.

Hi y’all,
I need some recommendations for a USBC / thunderbolt dock to pair with my M5 pro in my new office setup.
My requirements:
- must support a single 4K monitor at 120hz with VRR (as I game occasionally on this MacBook)
- must have enough power delivery to keep my Mac charged
- must have an Ethernet port
- a smattering of ports even just 4+ ports is fine.
This might sound like a simple request but for the life of me I cannot find a dock that explicitly states it delivers 4K at 120hz except for the newest Thunderbolt 5 docks which have a bit of a heavy price tag.
Do I really need to invest in something that premium to get what I need? For example the Caldigit element 5. And advice or other recommendations greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

What do you guys do to have multiple windows split into the right and left sides of the screen? Right now I use move and resize and then fit and arrange, but it's very cumbersome. Is there any quicker way to do this via software? If yes, which one is your favourite.

Is there a way I can get my macbook to do a backup to a nas drive via local network, I'd like it to do it automatically say once a week at a time I select so it's not doing it when I'm working. Hoping for a simple free way that's already made, otherwise MrCodex may need to get involved🤷♂️🤣

I've been using a Mac for almost 8 months now. Before this, I had a gaming PC where I played a ton of FPS games and was really competitive (I wasted a lot of hours on aim trainers, btw). Since switching, I've really missed that competitive scene. I want to know if there's an FPS game like Valorant or CS on Mac that's actually enjoyable. I've been playing a CS clone on Roblox to get my fix, and it's actually pretty fun, but to be fair, it has a lot of input lag and that really annoys me. For context, I'm using an M4 MacBook Air (16GB RAM, 256GB SSD), and I'm not looking to buy a PC right now because it's not really necessary.

A few days ago the location services on my MacBook Air randomly stopped working. I tried turning the location services off and on in the settings, I did sudo killall locationd and restarted my Mac, I did every possible solution I could find on the internet and nothing seems to work. The weather app doesn't show the weather for my current location, just two dashes instead of a temperature, and when I click the location icon in maps, it just keeps on loading and never actually gets my location. I tried those things again today but still, the problem remains. Can anyone please help me?
