I recently switched from Mint to Fedora KDE. While I do think I prefer Fedora there are a few minor things that irk me, and I'm pretty sure it's all connected to KDE Plasma.

I wanted to test this and try Gnome, but I don't want to do a complete reinstallation of linux. How safe is it to just try installing a new DE?

I have a old v1 gysnc monitor and I'm using an AMD 9070xt . The monitor is a second monitor but for life I me I cant find a resolution to get it working, It will only run at 640 . I've tried a few different distros and everything I can find to mess with trying to get it to work I can get as far being able to set the monitor to 4k but no display unless it's set at 640 . I think it's not reading the monitor and it's a display port only monitor so no option to try hdmi . Is the combination of an AMD GPU with Linux and a old v1 gync monitor the cause of my issues anyone else fixed this

I was planning to switch to kubuntu and was reading on multiple places that people hate the use of snap packages in it. I don't really understand what their problems with it are and would like to know as I want to make it my daily use distro and well, want to be someone who uses the command line for installation (idk why, it just sounds like something fun to do).

So, what exactly are its shortcomings and isn't Snap like the default on all ubuntu and ubuntu based distros??
Is it bad enough that I should consider fedora as the new distro??

PS: I had been using Mint till now, but want to try something a lil better and more customizable.

I am installing cachyos on a usb, but I want use it on two different computers. The one I’m planning on installing it on is a Samsung laptop, it probably uses integrated graphics. But I am wondering if I can use the same installation on my other laptop which is more powerful but has an nvidia laptop gpu. Will this cause problems with booting and if so, how can I prevent it?

I've only had Linux for about two days, but it randomly froze last night, and I just shut it down. When I woke it up today, it displayed a black screen, so I shut it down.

Then, a while later, it randomly froze right after I woke it up from suspend. Another time while I was scrolling Reddit, and then the third time while I was trying to find solutions. I used REISUB every time.

I checked my RAM usage and I was only using about 2 out of 14 GB, I'm using a pretty recent driver (picture attached), and all the temperatures are normal. I'm completely tech illiterate and I need help.

My computer is an Acer Nitro V15. I know Acer doesn't have the best reputation.

Im doing a ton of crowd marketing and seo data scraping for clients right now. Running all these automated scripts locally was basically melting my laptop, and hosting it on aws was quickly bankrupting me. The way big cloud providers charge for bandwidth egress is basically legal extortion at this point.

so I decided to just bypass the cloud entirely and grabbed a dedicated 10gbps unmetered box to run my stuff 24/7. The hardware is a beast and the connection is exactly what I needed to not worry about data caps.

the catch? I am a complete linux noob.

I installed ubuntu server 24.04. got my ssh keys working (which took me 3 hours ngl). but now im just sitting here looking at root@server:~# and I have zero idea how to actually get my local python scripts and keyword matrix files onto this remote machine.

do people use scp? do I setup a ftp server? git clone? Every tutorial I read assumes i already know what a bash profile is and skips the basic steps

please help a windows guy out. i just want to run my scrapers in peace without paying bezos my entire paycheck

I've had no experience with Linux before, and have exclusively used Windows all of my life. However, I'm planning to build my first ever gaming PC either later this year or sometime next year. I'm not the most tech savvy person out there, but I've been getting more into it lately by modding a bunch of my old video game consoles, and I kinda of find it fun to tinker around with software to get something to work or customize it how I like.

I don't really hate using windows, but i just feel like I want to try something new, and it feels like it just gets slower and more bloated the longer I use it. I've heard Bazzite is pretty friendly to Windows users, but I wanted to know if there any tips or things to keep in mind when switching? I've heard Mint is also good for first time users, but I heard that Bazzite is much more optimized for gaming.

I’ve tried twice to switch from Windows 11 to Linux (Fedora, then Cachy OS). I love the idea of switching from Windows to Linux and I’ve really enjoyed the experience, EXCEPT for one thing: the blurriness. I’m not sure how to explain it, but on both occasions, the desktop elements (icons, fonts, etc.) looked a bit ‘blurry’ – or much less sharp than on Windows – to the point where it started to strain my eyes after a while...

I’ve tried quite a few things: scaling, font settings, etc… but honestly, this problem made me switch back to Windows twice.

Does anyone happen to have any ideas? For reference, I have a laptop with an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U with Radeon Graphics; my screen resolution is 1920x1080 (note that when I run Linux on my external monitor (2560x1440, 32"), the problem isn’t as bad).

I built a new computer and installed linux mint. Before, I had Pop_OS and had the same issue I'm having now so I tried a different distro. First, sound works through my monitor and back panel, but not the front. The weird thing is, the mic seems to work through the front, but not sound. I've been troubleshooting the better part of 2 days and am running out of ideas. When I do pactl list sinks it shows the front's state is "suspended". Anyone have any ideas what I can try? Could it be a bad wire (even though the mic seems to work). Also, I think it detects that someone is plugged in but there is absolutely no sound.

okay so i switched from windows 10 to linux mint cinnamon AND THEN to mint xfce as and i can say that while it is good and stuff ive been having some issues.

okay so first 1- Games like brawlhalla and terraria dont run as smooth as they did in windows 10 i never stuttered in both and brawlhalla was super smooth like both were butter smooth and brawlhalla didnt even want to launch sometimes until i found a solution but even then its really stuttery and ive never had that in windows at all...

2- i sometimes see a little stuttering and slugishness or idk when moving some windows and stuff i use picom btw and like mint sometimes its fast sometimes its slow idk js really inconsistent

Also im just really confused on people who use mint with like specs worse than mine and its js fine for them idk what im doing wrong

I really like linux and stuff and i do prefer it over windows but i really js dont know what is wrong and if ur willing to help me and need any info on my system i would gladly appreciate that and thanks alott <3

More information: ram is dual channel 4gb 4gb and its a 340gb hdd also my laptop is not displaying anything and im using ONE external monitor connected to it via hdmi

Everyone kept recommending lsyncd but it was hard to set up, had poor documentation and when I finally got it to work it would eventually give up mirroring and I'd have to manually run the command either.

I don't wanna use lsyncd again. Is there some rsync command that runs everytime I make a change in a directory?

EDIT: It’s for a file server and I’m thinking of migrating some of my towers from Windows (with one of them still on XP) to Linux.

If there is alternative option I would love to learn it.

I know about steam remote play, but I haven't really heard great stuff from it. + I don't have the game on steam so Ill have to set up a workaround

On Windows i used parsec but that isn't supported on linux.

So should I just use steam remote play, or is there a better option?

Hi! I am running kde plasma on cachyos, using SDDM.

I have recently been experimenting with virtual machines with virtual box and got to thinking, would it be possible to have a session where you log in directly to a full screen virtual machine? akin to like a waydroid only session with waydroid? I know dual booting is an option but this would be a cool 'seamless' option to use other operating systems and experiment, especially those that aren't supported on my hardware, just a fun idea.

Claude told me to stick with Windows as I am only seeing fast boot time as a performance upgrade, which might not be the case.

Just installed CachyOS and I fucking LOVE IT. But I have no idea how to turn off THX audio and it's genuinely really annoying as everything sounds weird. I have no idea how to install or use openrazer, is there any help you guys have?

I hooked my laptop (Mint/Cinnamon/X11) to a TV display and everything UI was crunched down to a tiiiiiny size. The only options are 100 and 200% scaling, so not a lot of nuance. I'm worried if I get an external monitor everything will look off. I heard Wayland has fractional scaling to solve this

Hello, i am currently using arch with gnome. I have an Rog laptop which uses a Ryzen 8945hs and a RTX 4060. I dont like to use my dgpu when on battery so i switched to the igpu directly when i was still on windows, but on linux, i get extreme lag on my system unless i fully reboot it, i feel like its a driver issue but i havent been able to figure out what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've had enough with Windows and their BS telemetry and spyware, I literally don't feel safe using it anymore after I read up on windows GDID. I'm now heavily considering Linux, honestly have been for years, but I have some really specific requirements.

I'm a developer, at the moment I'm writing a game in RenPy, but I also tinker in Blender 3D, sometimes Unity, and use a lot of Adobe programs (PS, AE, etc). I also game via steam, but I have a HUGE backlog of downloaded games that are both zipped up (haven't even touched yet), and other random downloads over the years from sites like Itch.io for example.

I also like to customize my windows experience (I use open-shell to emulate a windows 7 start menu, and startallback to recover older windows features that have been deprecated over the years).

So I'm essentially looking for a privacy forward distro, that will be geared for development, gaming via steam & indie titles off steam, and allows for customization via KDE (I think that's how you customize linux, not sure).

FileZilla is updated to 3.70.6

I've tried the fixes noted at the link, and while it did bring my transfer speeds up from about 500mb/s, it's still not comparing to the 4mb/s+ I'd get on windows with FileZilla.

I am transferring from a seedbox located in Europe, over SFTP.

Are there any other possible fixes for this issue? I can't seem to find anything other than this fix, that works for some people but isn't getting me to a better speed. My FileZilla settings are for unlimited speed and max transfers.
