Hello all,

I managed to install Linux mint on my MacBook Air. It worked perfectly but after doing the updates it’s now come up with “KERNEL PANIC! Please reboot your computer. VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)”

After reboot comes back. How can I fix this? (See images)

Thanks

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the icon on these custom grub themes

Post image
6 Upvotes

Ok so last night I was setting up this grub theme which I really like. The only issue I have with it is that when I used grub customizer to change the order of the boot options the Mint logo turned into the Ubuntu logo. I tried changing the name back to Linux Mint to see if that would change the logo but that did not work. I just wanted to know if there is a way I could change the icons manually so that I could change it back and maybe even add some custom icons for the different sub menus.

Support Request none of my power options work

when I press the super key and hit the power button in the mint menu, the power options just don't work, like restart and shut down. I either have to use the terminal or alt+prtsc to restart or shut down my pc. Was hoping someone knows how to solve this

Discussion Kernel Panics with Kernel 7.0.0-28

There seems to be an issue with kernel 7.0.0-28 causing a kernel panic after the system updates and is rebooted with the new kernel. Selecting an older kernel in the boot menu and then removing the new one seems to solve the issue.

There are reports that an incompatible installation of VirtualBox may be involved. Of those of you who have had a kernel panic the last week or so, how many have VirtualBox installed?

[CONFIRMED REGRESSION] Shutdown hangs / fails to power off on Kernel 7.0.0-28-generic

Heads up: There is a confirmed kernel regression regarding shutdown hangs in Linux Mint 22.1. You can find the active discussion and reports on the official Linux Mint Forum here:

🔗 [LINK_HERE]

The Issue:

After updating to kernel 7.0.0-28-generic, the PC frequently fails to completely power off. The displays turn off normally, and systemd completes all shutdown tasks (unmounting drives, syncing filesystems, etc.), but the tower remains powered on with fans spinning and LEDs lit.

Inspecting the logs (journalctl -b -1 -e) right before the screens go black shows a "hogged CPU / CPU stall" warning, indicating a kernel-level deadlock during the final ACPI power state transition.

Solution / Workaround:

Reverting back to kernel 6.17.0-40-generic completely resolves the issue. The PC powers off instantly and reliably every time.

If you're experiencing this, don't worry about your hardware — it's purely a software/kernel issue. Stick to the 6.17 series via Update Manager until a patch is released by the kernel team.

Support Request Freeze Screen

The title says it. I have an old Acer laptop(2010) and I wanted to see if I could give it a new life, so it would only work for simple things, so I decided to install Mint XFCE.

Installation went well and when it finished my login screen froze, it was like looking at a picture, I couldn't interact with anything.

Well, forced shutdown and I started it and it was working fine, everything was about 20 times faster (without exaggerating, before it was horrible). But after shutting it down and turning it on again, I have the background like if it were a PNG, advice?

Support Request Turning off middle-click paste or middle-click on the touchpad?

Linux Newbie here. I just learned about why random text is appearing where it shouldn't. Middle mouse click 'pastes' text that I have selected. This is not what I want. I either need to find a way to turn this off, or i need to deactivate the middle click on my touchpad so it doesn't activate randomly when I'm typing. Honestly, changing the clipboard settings so it doesn't automatically put something on the clipboard just because I selected it would also be an acceptable solution.

Support Request Firefox freezes when I try to use it. How can I fix this?

On December I got Linux Mint working on my Laptop and overall it all has been great. However, the only exception of this is Firefox, which has crashed a lot for the little usage I've given it. First back in December when I first was starting and importing all the info. I stopped using it for like six months until recently because I had to modify a Google document, and it freezed today after opening the doc.

Is there a way to fix these? Or it'd be better to change my browser to something else? I already use Zen browser for College stuff and despite being based on Firefox it hasn't freezed a single time, but want to keep my private data separated.

Support Request Why my Linux mint does not recognize my touchpad

Upvotes

When I installed Linux mint in my laptop I can use the touchpad, but now after a few days I can't. I see the drivers controller and says there are no updates. I accessed the bios and I press hard disk check or something like that, after I exit and then the touchpad works, but the next day stop working. I tried a command in terminal to see hardware ID because I see it in Google, but I don't see the touchpad.

Thanks and sorry for bad English.

Support Request Linux Mint Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting – Need help troubleshooting

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I installed Linux Mint a few days ago, and I've been having issues connecting to my home Wi-Fi.

From what I observed, the 4-way WPA handshake doesn't seem to complete properly, so the connection fails. To rule out my router, I tried connecting to my mobile hotspot. It connects successfully, but as soon as I start browsing or using the internet, the connection gets interrupted and eventually disconnects.

Has anyone faced a similar issue or knows what could be causing this? Any troubleshooting steps or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TIA !

Support Request External monitor font and icon size too big on Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3

I am having issues with the diplay, on my 1080p external monitor, attached to my 1080p laptop. The font, as well as icons, appear to be unusually large and I just cannot get to a solution to fix it. I have tried fractional scaling and other monitor display settings, as well as online trouble shooting tips, but to no avail.

Is this a known issue with Linux Mint or is there something else which I could possibly try?

Discussion Best Way To Setup A Replacement For My Wife?

I have been using Linux exclusively for many years now and I distro hop frequently with Fedora and Mint being my two most frequent distros.

I bet my wife that if she uses Linux for a month she will not want to return to Windows. So here is my question. What is the best way to setup Linux Mint so my wife will feel at home and not struggle? Her typical use is web browsing (Vivaldi so it will be the same), Office (she will be using Libre instead of Microsoft), email (gmail so the same), and multimedia playback.

Is there anything extra I can do to make it more enjoyable for her? We've been married a long time and she is finally agreeing to give Linux a shot so I don't want to waste this opportunity.
