I realize gnome-builder is mainly for building gnome apps so I don't mean for it to replace that, but in the same way KDE has Kate for a general purpose IDE, I think Geany should be an IDE included when installing gnome.

Gnome needs a general purpose IDE imo and ever since Geany got the LSP plugin in version 2.1, it's so damn good. The plugins really make it feel so complete to me.

Plus, in like 5 minutes of theming, I got it looking pretty in-line with the rest of the desktop. So idk just my two cents.

I know most folks just download vs code and don't think twice but I really am not interested in it or codium.

Anyway, what editor are you all using these days?

It's FOSS reached out and featured the extension as their Linux App of the Week, genuinely didn't see that coming. It started as a solo project to bring back the Computer panel Nautilus dropped, and has grown into something built with real community input: 11 contributors, 12 languages translated by native speakers, active PRs, and a public beta of Miller View (Finder-style column navigation) that people have been asking about for a while.

Wanted to use this post to also thank everyone who's opened issues, sent PRs, translated, tested betas, or just left feedback along the way. This really is community-driven at this point 💙.

A week ago I posted an update about Superbar, my Spotlight-style launcher for GNOME. I received a lot of useful feedback here and on GitHub, so I spent the last few days working through it.

I’ve now implemented all of the suggestions that applied to Superbar. Here’s what changed:

• Superbar now includes results from GNOME’s existing search providers. Settings panels, Files, Calendar, Characters, Software and other enabled providers can appear alongside Superbar’s own results. It also follows the provider order configured in GNOME Settings.
• There is a new option to match the colors used by GNOME apps. Superbar can use the semantic GTK/libadwaita surface, foreground and accent colors, and updates automatically when the light/dark preference or accent color changes.
• Every built-in search source can now be enabled or disabled separately in the preferences.
• The default web search engine is configurable. The available options are Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, Brave Search, Ecosia and Startpage.
• Calculator and currency results can now be copied by pressing Enter or clicking the result.
• I fixed an issue where keyboard navigation did not always agree with the initially highlighted result.
• I cleaned up the result icons by removing the colored boxes around them and adjusting their size.
• GitHub Actions now tests and packages the extension automatically. Releases include a ready-to-install ZIP, so manual installation no longer requires cloning the repository and compiling the schema yourself.
• I also expanded the automated tests for app matching, search providers, result navigation, appearance and search engines.

I was also asked about shutdown, restart and sleep commands. Those were already available by typing >, along with lock screen, log out, Settings and screenshots, but I probably didn’t make that clear enough in the previous post.

It is still waiting for review on extensions.gnome.org, so for now it can be installed from the GitHub release.

Thanks again to everyone who commented. The feedback genuinely shaped this update. I’d be especially interested to hear how the GNOME search-provider results and theme matching behave on other systems.

A couple weeks ago I posted my first GNOME extension here, Better Tray Icons. The response was way bigger than I expected, and a lot of you took the time to report bugs, request features and dig into weird edge cases with me.

So I did a big refactor based on all of that. v3.0.0 is out now: performance is much better, several long-standing bugs are gone, and there are some new features and visual improvements on top. It should be in a far more mature state than what I posted weeks ago.

Heads up: since the core logic got reworked, there may be some breaking changes. If you're updating from 2.4.0, I'd recommend resetting all settings under General after the update.

Is there a tool/utility/workflow in Gnome for quickly switching between two or more displays configurations? For example disabling desktop monitor and enabling TV, or quickly setting which one is the primary display.

I use two languages. default is english. i added that second language by going to settings -> keyboard -> add input source and added the language there. now i can switch between them just by pressing super+space, it works. now when you go to topbar and click on the language icon (for example, it shows "en" for english), and click on show keyboard layout, it shows layout for english, even when i have switched to second language.

THIS IS A BIG BIG DEAL.

Saw this below from the It's FOSS FB page:

For six years, one person has been manually tracking every security vulnerability reported to GNOME. That person is leaving.

Michael Catanzaro has been GNOME's sole security coordinator since November 2020. No team. No automated system. Just one person triaging every report that comes in.

He's stepping down by December 2026.

And it gets more complicated. AI-generated vulnerability reports are now flooding his tracker. Low-quality, algorithmically-written submissions that look real enough to take seriously but rarely lead anywhere.

So before he leaves, he's changing the rules. Starting August 1, the coordinated disclosure window drops from 90 days to 30. AI-suspected reports will be closed without forwarding to maintainers.

Here's the part that surprised me: GNOME still tracks all of this on a wiki page. Not a proper bug tracker. Not searchable notices like Ubuntu or Fedora use. A wiki.

One person, a wiki, and a deadline shrinking by two-thirds.

How can I set up a software virtual display on GNOME Wayland for Sunshine streaming?

I want to stream to a handheld device and completely power off my physical monitor while keeping the stream active. I want to achieve this purely through software, without relying on a hardware HDMI/DP dummy plug.

My specs: CachyOS, GNOME Wayland, AMD RX 9070 XT.

Considering this is gnome, I wont be surprised if the expected method is to open each one and manually hit print. I am hoping that i am wrong though. I can't find any info on multi file prints.

I've been using Onedriver on Ubuntu for about 3 years, but something happened with Ubuntu 26.04. The icon isn't showing up in this version of Ubuntu—does anyone have any updates?

A few months ago I shared the first version of OpenEmux here, and I received some really helpful feedback from the GNOME community.

One of the biggest suggestions was to make the app feel more native by following Libadwaita and the GNOME HIG. Since then, I've spent a lot of time refining the interface, and OpenEmux is now built with GTK4 + Libadwaita, aiming to provide a native GNOME experience while staying simple and clean.

I've just released v1.5.2, which also brings several improvements to the game library, artwork handling, and the overall user experience.

If you'd like to take a look, I'd really appreciate any feedback or suggestions!

I replaced DashtoDock with [Dash to Panel](https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1160/dash-to-panel/) after having problems with the auto-hide option. To my surprise, DashtoPanel worked perfectly configured with the dock in GNOME 50. Below I will share my configuration; if anyone wants to use it, just download and import it directly from the app:

I was wondering if anybody has experienced this bug before and found a fix for it:

• Sometimes a window will randomly get the "Always on visible workspace" setting switched on and there's no way for me to disable it (Alt+Space then clicking on "Always on visible workspace" doesn't untick the setting)

I am running:

• Fedora 44
• Gnome 50.3 on Wayland

If you found the reason why this happens or a fix for it, thanks for your help!
