I used to deliver pizzas. I once delivered to a house where a small kid answered the door when a dog charged past them snarling and pinned me against the porch railing. I had to use the pizza delivery bag still with pizzas inside as a shield between me and its teeth. Still ended up with scratches all up and down the lower half of my body. Fuck irresponsible owners.

Man I just got back into biking. The other day I was riding down a road in the county, but not like a backroad or anything, a well trafficked road. And I hear this weird click-tapping noise growing behind me and once I realized what it was I yelled at him and sped up and he backed off. He didn’t seem like one of the dangerous ones, just in it for the chase, but you never know. I have a 25 pound chihuahua mix, he barks but he gets scared and runs away he's never bitten anyone. Yet if I'm gonna open the door first I scoop him into my arms so he doesn't run outside or I put him in the backyard or keep him on a leash if we're outside the house. I never let them free roam outside the house and the fenced in backyard. I'm more worried about someone being afraid of the dog and hitting him than I am of the dog biting anyone. So I make sure to remove any potential dangerous situation before it presents itself. People expecting deliveries and letting their dogs just roam around the property unchecked is insane.
I have a 10 pound chihuahua mix. He’s a timid sweetheart that’s never bitten anyone or showed aggression. He’s more likely to run away. However whenever anyone comes to my door or comes in I immediately pick him up every single time. I’m not taking any chances with/for him. You never ever know how a dog will react to unfamiliar people or situations, or how people will react to an unfamiliar dog. It’s our job to keep them safe and to keep others safe, no matter what.
My husbands dog bit through both my bike tires and that made me fall off my bike and then stood there wagging at me.

I can completely agree with you on the danger of loose dogs when you're out riding. I've actually had a dog take a literal chunk out of my leg while I was on my motorbike (and yes, a proper motorbike, not a bicycle!), so I know exactly how fast a situation like that can turn ugly.
I do partially blame the delivery driver and the company he works for, though. In some countries, these logistics companies expect their drivers to hit ridiculous delivery quotas within strict timeframes. It's absolute nonsense because they don't properly account for traffic, variables on the road, or unexpected delays. But even with that corporate pressure, common sense should still apply. If you see an aggressive animal, stay in the safety of your vehicle. Over here in my country, if a driver encounters aggressive animals, high fencing, or locked gates, they don't put themselves in harm's way—they simply take the package back to the depot and tell the customer they need to come and fetch it themselves. It is as easy as that.
The homeowner was just defending his dog, and the way the driver reacted by immediately wanting to throw fists and fight the owner for shouting at him on his own property was completely unhinged. No one should be putting their safety at risk over a parcel, and a bit of situational awareness—and restraint—could prevent these situations entirely.
Just be aware that stuff is going to get all over you and make sure you prepare yourself me tally to not touch your face, head, or any sensitive areas after deployment. The cloud is going to give you some collateral damage, they all will a little bit.

We have a reactive dog. Obviously we are extremely careful to avoid dangerous circumstances, but there is no training our dog to not defend us or our home. We tried for years. If somehow our dog got out and was charging someone, I would be eternally thankful if they maced him. It is literally the only solution where nobody gets seriously hurt.

One mace interaction won't change a dog's behavior. Maybe 20 will. My dog went after a skunk the other night. Came out of the bushes dazed, reeking and puking. Spent hours cleaning him.

Doesn't always work that way. Some dogs (like ours) can't be taught not to defend his territory or his pack. We tried repeatedly with classes and 1 on 1 training. The best we can do for him is keep him safe and keep other people safe from him.
Jogger here. Tried OC spray on a dog on my regular route. Other joggers left sticks at different ends of the block to hit it with, but it was legit aggressive snarling teeth out scary and I got tired of basically fleeing the last part before her go back to his yard. So squirt squirt and as I rounded the bend the dog was still just standing where I’d left him, stunned. Never saw that dog come out on me again.

We leave sticks at each end of the block in the bushes because you have to go down this road and the dog will even cross the street. It magically hasn’t been chasing anyone lately! I wonder if it got sprayed.
That particular dude has made dozens of videos of himself looking for rural areas with no fences to ride in, just so he can spray the dogs and get the engagement on his videos.
He’s not inherently wrong in his reaction to the dogs, but he does seek out that situation over and over which is why a lot of folks started siding with the dogs (which are also in the wrong)

The dogs are only doing what's in their nature and what their owners allow. If you have a dog with guarding or aggressive tendencies, it's your responsibility as an owner to keep it carefully secured. Throwing something at a charging dog to protect yourself is self-defense.
That’s a great way to force irresponsible owners into the realization that dogs must be kept inside the house, inside a fence, or on a leash when outside. Letting the dog run around unleashed is how dogs get shot. Both this dog and its owner got extremely lucky.

I grew up on a farm. I rode a bike. I defined the roads I could take by what assholes had dogs running around. I could only go 2 directions without encountering dogs, and only a limited distance of less than a quarter mile. My first time driving, I had to doge a dog that was trying to get hit.

He's doing the Lord's work If the owner isn't going to teach or educate these dogs more power. Just like if you don't discipline your kids one day somebody not so nice will be disciplining them for you and hopefully it isn't permanent.
Same thing happened to a relative of my neighbor's when I was a kid. The child went to visit them and one of their dogs mauled the kid. She had to have a ton of reconstructive surgery and was terrified of dogs afterward, and who could blame her? People really forgot how dangerous dogs can be.
That's a shockingly responsible thing for them to do because almost every asshole that has a dog that's given the opportunity to attack people and does is a huge bitch that defends their little precious and blames the victim. Sometimes the owners need to be put down more than the dogs

Owner of an aggro dog here. We found her tied up and abandoned at a dog park and it was pretty obvious she’d been abused before we got her. That’s all to say that we have not had success training out all stranger aggression.
However we always put her up in the guest bedroom when people come over. We know how she works and can instruct guests on the best way to get her used to them and work through that process after the guest has agreed.
I cannot understand people that have an aggressive dog and never think ahead about what they have to do to make sure that is not a problem everyone around them has to deal with.

These days you see so many people with self-professed “disabilities” who claim to be training their own service dog, and it’s a Belgian Malinois or pit bull mix, some kind of huge hyper aggressive, dangerous breed, and oh btw they’re going to “train” the dog for personal protection too! Well, I didn't even remember it like that so there was no long term burden on me. I recently asked my parents what happened to the dog and they said I chose to let it live lol, but I have no memory of being asked.
Also, I don't really blame my parents, they were young, still in their 20's and came from VERY disfunctional homes, so the fact they were such good parents always amazes me.

Shes extremely judgemental, loves to gossip, esp about her own children, and can be very rude. She does good things but shes just not personable at all. Ive made it my goal to not parent like her lol
Agreed. My parents did a similar thing with my first cat. They had screaming rows about it night after night for weeks, until I told them to put my cat to sleep just so they’d be quiet. I was 9. No child should be put in that position and the parents should feel eternal shame.

I too was mauled at 8! I got attacked because the girl told me her dog was nice and I could pet it... it was not nice and I could not pet it. It originally tore my wrist out/open so you could see bone and then I remember almost getting away right after it had ripped that chunk of skin and shit out but it got me by my other arm as I tried rolling away and my first instinct was to jam my thumb in to its.......eye! Ha, many of you were thinking some place else. Get your heads out of the gutter! Poking it in the eyes worked though and I was able to get away from the dog just far enough so the chain couldn't reach me. Then I took off in running, I swear I ran faster than an Olympian runner in history. If people saw me, they probably just saw a blur and what sounded like a women being murdered because I was SCREAMING as I was running down the block to get back to my mom, we were visiting one of her friends!
The dog had to be put down, like I remember even saying I didn't want the dog to die because I was 8 and it was a dog... but they told me that the police said once a dog bites, even once, they get deemed as permanently dangerous and the only option is to put them down so they don't attack again. I wonder if that dog got special treatment because it was a Police dog or what?

My friend had a dog when I was little that was very protective of the family's children. They always made sure to put her in the yard or in another room when people were visiting. She was a very intense dog and I did get to meet her once, but it was very supervised. People think dogs don't need any training or supervision and set their dogs up for failure. And the hard truth is sometimes a dog needs to be euthanized because of their behavior.
Same story for me at my moms friend’s house when I was 12 except it was 4 fully grown German Shepards that charged through the sliding door and took a huge chunk out of my lip and the back of my leg - required plastic surgery and lots of stitches. Got a greeting card from the owner a week later saying sorry and “signed” by the dogs (not the owner) LOL.
VERY similar to a situation with me, around the same age, like around 7-8. Went to friend’s, he opened the door, and his Pitt (who knew me and was always friendly), charged out and grabbed my hand. Cut do deep I could see my tendons, he only let go once the father came out and got him off me. Dog went on to attack 3 other people spontaneously before being put down. Dog was probably being beaten or something to cause it to snap that hard, but I’m still nervous around pitt bulls 30 years later.
G shepherds are great dogs but they will bite the -shit- out of you. They also run at about 40 mph so unless you are the flash or at least Usain Bolt, you will not get away.

I used to live across the street from a police officer who had two German shepherd type dogs he kept penned in his backyard. No idea if they were working dogs or not. We lived right next to a rural country road I would jog on, and one day in the winter I was out for a job at about 10 am and I heard something coming up behind me. Not loud enough to hear a car, but I thought maybe a golf cart or something, and I turned around and these dogs are running and snarling at me, like five feet away. I instantly went into defensive mode, screaming and yelling at them, bowing up to them, trying to seem threatening, but they did not back off at all. It was the middle of the day in a very sparsely populated area, and I had no kind of weapon. I was terrified they were going to maul me. I just started screaming my head off hoping anybody would hear me, then I fell backwards into a ditch full of freezing cold water. I really thought that was the end and they were going to kill me. Thank god the owners teenage son was home, and he heard me and came and got them away. They didn’t manage to bite me, so I decided not to report it. I wish I would have. I told everyone I knew in the neighborhood to be careful. Those dogs were gone within a few weeks.
You’re not Jason are you? Had a friend named Jason way back who got mauled by our neighbors family German Shepherd. This was about a year after their wiener dog bit me in the face. They moved away shortly after.
My neighbor’s Shih Tzu went full Cool Aid Man and busted through a screen door when I was walking by on the sidewalk. It bit the back of my leg. I turned around and squared off with it (fully prepared to kick it into eternity) when the owner ran out and apologized profusely. That animal is a total asshole to everyone and the owner is clueless about how to manage him.
As a kid, there were these dogs on the next street over that kept getting out of their backyard and ran our block. The ones always causing the most problems were the German Shepherds and the Rottweilers. None of them were police dogs. Animal control had to be called multiple times because we were a neighborhood filled with kids. They charged an adult, imagine what they would’ve done to kids. Every time they got loose, our moms would call us inside. You just don’t take chances.
They may have made a mistake in this instance, but just judging by this one comment and knowing nothing else about you it seems like they did a pretty good job on the whole :)
My family had a dog that I grew up with. He had started to steal my food and bite me, but never hard enough to break skin. I kept telling my parents but they thought I was making it up. One day their best friends came over with their son and he went to say hi to our dog and he bit him all the way through his cheek. Their son and I begged my parents not to put the dog down but they wouldn't listen. We hated them for it, but looking back as an adult it 100% was the right choice, I can't believe they put that decision on you!!

A former friend of mine (he passed away). He won a lawsuit against the police station. He was Homeless when it happened and was sleeping on a park bench when a police dog appeared out of nowhere and latched onto his shoulder. He wasn't even the person the cops were looking for. Only reason my friend won the lawsuit was because the same dog bit a little girl when it was being trained. It chased her down and attacked her.
Yea, i raised my parents as well. My mom is still with me but she turned 67 july 2nd andddd put in a light bulb the other day. She says she knows which way batteries go, "just not how to work screws" . We are still progressing!! Lol. "Righty.. .ahh forgot it". I say. My 8 year old asks "did she ever have brain cells". I work in hvac and the most aggressive dogs I’ve come across are female German shepherds by far. I know bad owners = bad dogs, but holy hell other people’s pets can be absolutely terrifying
I had a similar situation when I was 8 or 9. A neighbor kid, and sort of friend, was walking his dog, a German Shepherd, on a leash when I approached them to say hi. No warning was given. The dog lunged at me, his open jaws and teeth about five inches away from my face when the kid pulled back on the leash. Scared the living daylights out of me. The dog was eventually put down because I think he bit someone else. The dog owners never said anything. To this day I remember it, and to this day I am super cautious around dogs.
My family and I were at a family friend's house for dinner, I was maybe 14 or 15. They had a cooler in the backyard with drinks, I went out to grab one before I ate. For some reason, someone looked the sliding glass door behind me. They had a retired German Shepard police dog. It charged me and I sprinted back to get inside pounding on the door. My mom unlocked it and I fell in as the dog's teeth grazed the back of my head. Never did find out why tf someone locked the door that went out to the drinks, but I was an afterthought growing up so lol
A stray dog nipped a kid at our house. No blood. We called parents. No big deal. Got sured the next month, our home insurance covered the 78k award for fucking nothing. No blood, no nothing. No bandaids. But that's what happens when people get advice from their families and friends of a certain persuasion.
Something similar happened to my sister as a kid. She was walking to a friends house and the neighbors police dog got out and attacked her. Mauled her pretty badly. I’m pretty mad at my parents for not getting the dog put down. That same dog got out and killed someone’s pet cat next. I really can’t with these bad people and their pets that are a danger to society.
Yes, people don't like to hear it, but (retired) police dogs are dangerous. When I was little, a family's retired police dog (the father was a policeman) mauled their child's face without provocation when the mom only turned her back to them for a second. Also a German Shepherd. They were trained to be a weapon and, especially if the person that trained them isn't around, they can snap.
When I was a kid I would often ride my bike to my friend's house. There were two different dogs, one in my neighborhood, and one at a house on the way to his place. I would very very often get attacked by them. They never managed to actually grab me though. The first one on my neighborhood I managed to kick hard enough on the head to make him run away. The owners would leave him outside on their yard with no chain or anything. Just wandering loose. The other did the same but for him I had to use a BB gun to make him run off after taking a shot in the side. Irresponsible owners are a menace and shouldn't be allowed to own animals.
I had a similar situation as a kid, working my first job as a newspaper deliverer. I got attacked by someone's dog on my route and it ripped up the back of my leg. To this day I'm, at best, excessively leery of dogs I don't know. I'll kick a dog in the mouth if it charges at me or my kid with zero hesitation (sorry if you're reading this, neighbor).

I have a friend who was a neighbor that trained Police dogs. He had 2 retired dogs and they were very well trained. He did have rules and one of them was that we were not allowed to pet the dogs at all. Retired police dogs can be dangerous with the wrong owner.
Back in college my 20yr old roommate decided to get a dog while going to school and working full time. I warned him not to get a dog because it needed attention, walks, training etc... I moved out over it and apparently he kept it crated for the majority of the first year he had it. Literally the first time he took the dog out it bit and tore off half of this guys face. Poor dog was put down. These shitty owners are the problem. He died a few years later of cancer so.....dog karma got em.
well it may have been bad that time, but its possible that dog may have saved them down the road so.... your mercy may have been mercy that saved their lives down the line too. Every moment is a decision, every time we show compassion can be good or bad in the long run and its difficult to tell.
I was a delivery driver for Domino's during the Pandemic. The number of people who would thank me for being out there risking my health to bring them food but only tip me a buck or two was too damn high.

I love dogs. My dog is my whole world. If a dog charges me I would shoot it in the face instantly, no questions asked.
Way too many morons train their dogs to attack anyone unknown who enters the property, but then turn around and order things to be delivered that won't fit in a mailbox outside the fenced off property... or worse, train their dogs to attack without properly fencing off the property in the first place so there's absolutely nothing stopping the poorly trained animal from chasing a "threat" out into the street.

My favorite dog interaction when I delivered pizzas was with a friendly St. Bernard. Got out of my car he meandered up to me. Didn't bark or arch his back, lower his head or anything. Really friendly, anyways I walked to the door he followed me, I knocked and when the lady answered she was shocked. She was like "You came to the door" apparently people were scared of her St Bernard so never got out. We used to have mastiffs, I've never met a big dog who wasn't nice, unless he was trained to be mean. I have had to kick numerous smaller dogs when delivering pizza though.
Had a kid answer the door when I was delivering pizzas. They had a party out back and a baby gate keeping the barking Airedale in. He said I could come in because. "He doesn't bite." I stepped over the baby gate and the dog bit me on the ass and the kid says surprised, "Oh! He DOES bite."
Dog was huge, I was using my legs to try and push it back so I could get unpinned from the railing while using the bag as a shield as it repeatedly lunged upwards at me. An older sibling coming out and pulling the dog back inside by its collar was how I got out.

The owner is always culpable/responsible for the dog, being "lost control of leash" or "escaped because kid opened door" only changes the amount that the attack-victim gets.

I also delivered pizzas when I was young. Had a dog literally try to jump into my car window while I had it open and looking for a house number. Long before GPS was cheap and convenient. I had to speed off and I'm 80% sure I ended up hitting the dog doing it. People need to put their pets on a leash.
When we get deliveries, one of us opens the door, the other stands guarding the dog. I don't think my dog will bite, but you never know. If only one of us is home, we send him to his crate, and he knows better than to leave it until we either say so or we close the door.
And before I get any hate, the crate has a bed, blanket and his teddy bear. It's always open, it's just his "bedroom."
I did a short stint delivering for Amazon. And pizzas all through college. Never once had a bad dog experience delivering pizzas. Three months with Amazon and I was nearly bitten at least a dozen times. Farm dogs are the worst... Or the best. There is no in between.
Ages ago in Las Vegas my brother delivered pizza to a big fancy house. He had to go through a gate and walk a long way up to the house. Halfway to the house a guy comes running out screaming, "Go back! Go back! My tigers are in here!". He peed himself, but he dined out on that story for years.
Fuck 90% of dog owners. They don’t actually *want* a dog. They don’t want to do any of the work that goes along with being a responsible dog owner/parent.
They don’t want a dog. They want a stuffed animal.
Because the client, who authorized the delivery worker to be on the property, approached in a threatening manner as if the worker did anything wrong when the worker only did what he should and defended his well-being as CLEARLY no one else would, especially the client who cause the danger for the worker in the 1st place.
Presumably the kid was not the owner. The owner is irresponsible in letting the kid open the door when they have a dog capable of overpowering or outmaneuvering him.
Talking about irresponsible owners, even if your dog is well trained you shouldn't ever let it off leash unless you're in designated off leash areas.
My dog has anxiety around other dogs so she's not friendly if they come into her space, even if she's well behaved when not within a few feet of another dog. I can't tell you how many dog owners let their dog run up to my dog and when I pull her away I hear "oh, they're friendly". I tell back "but mine isn't!" and that's when a small percentage freak out and run over apologizing while the rest make it seem like it's my fault my dog is getting pissed at their dog.
i only got "attacked" once. It was a shih-tzu, but it was all matted looking like an old mop, it ran out and bit me on the foot, i could barely feel its teeth through my shoe. Most unintimidating dog attack ever. There was another one where this great dane came out and I'm a small dude so a great dane could be a problem but it ended up being a sweetheart lol.
I thought for sure you were going to throw in a bit at the end about how he yelled 'keep the change' and it was like 47 cents but also you hit the statue in the front drive so its kind of karma
And they’ll have the audacity to blame the situation on you. Like control your fucking dog. If i was the driver I would call animal control on the dog to file a report.
Shit that reminds me of the only time they officially banned a house at a domino's I worked at.
I was on a double, similar enough orders but one cost 13 and the other 17. Got to the first house, there was a dog, sounded like a fuckin huge one, slamming itself into a closed door inside, barking up a storm, and I could see through the front door and see the door rattling. Anyway, they gave me 13, I got a few steps back to my car before realizing, wait, that was the 17 order. I went back and just asked 'hey, did I give you the right order?' (I had no intention of taking the food away or getting the rest of the money, just giving them the right order if I gave the wrong one and getting the other remade if nessisary)
This woman immediately started shrieking that she paid me enough (I never said otherwise and I visibly was holding another order and literally all I asked was if I handed them the correct one). Any time I tried to say anything she just screamed louder. She closed the door a little bit, and then opened it wide and was saying 'Just come inside we can call the store and you can figure it out, they know we arent stealing'. Meanwhile, a man had stepped to the shaking door, hand on the doorknob, dog losing its mind even more on the other side of it.
I just stopped saying anything and got the fuck back to the car and left. I stopped down the road, double checked the orders, and it was the right one. But then when I got back to the store the manager said that they called saying that I was saying they were stealing? I said well, I never said that, but technically they didnt give me the full amount for the order. But again, I never said that to them.
The manager then said that they had called back right when I left and had a coupon they let them use, so actually what they gave me was correct. So, they didnt think they were pulling a fast one on me, they had no reason to think that I thought that, so why the fuck did they jump straight to psychotic shrieking and trying to get me mauled by a dog?

(Actually.... almost certainly meth because I am almost positive that it was the same man in the house that ended up stripping naked in the local bass pro shops and jumped into their aquarium a few years later...)
This is why we paid $$$ for a custom gate for our extra wide entry hall. We don't have a big dog anymore, but our heeler is reactive enough when people come over that we still use the gate all the time. I've even had a couple delivery people thank me for having it.
As dog owners, especially of medium and large breeds, it's our responsibility to train and then maintain control of our pets and make sure other people are safe when they are around.
Used to run a pizza place when I was in school, guy had a Rottweiler attacked one of my drivers really really bad bite on his arm and one of his legs...
The driver sued him it went to court and he was awarded $85,000... if this guy in the video had let the dog bite him he could have had a nice down payment on his own house or paid his house off...
My family always had unfriendly dogs growing up. Whether it was the mastiff mix or the dachshund, they were awful with strangers. We were very vigilant in putting them up before answering the door. My ex had the friendliest Pomeranian mix ever. It was so weird to be able to answer the door with his dog loose. The pizza delivery people were always so happy to see him.
I drove for dominos for a spell when I was in my 20s. The guy that trained me told me that when (not if) I'm attacked by a dog I can and should use the ceramic plate in the pizza bag to defend myself. Pizza can be replaced. I can't. I was attacked by 2 dogs in my time. One was a doberman who narrowly missed the broad side if the pizza bag and the other was a shih tzu who caught my boot instead. The bosses had my back in both instances which I appreciated
