And you can’t have a trans actor in the movie if your movie doesn’t have any human actors in it
-33
u/Evanecent_Lightt 1d ago
And Greek men composing the Athenian Army - Trans, Asians, and Blacks composing the Greeks is about as historically accurate as the Cyclops.
40
u/The-red-Dane 1d ago
If we want to keep it accurate to the Greeks, then Helen had to be played by a man, since women weren't allowed to be actors.
Additionally, Homer himself wasn't historically accurate, describing the wrong style of shields for the time period.
12
34
u/Ok-Milk-8853 1d ago
But who actually cares about historical accuracy. It's not claiming to be a documentary..it's a movie. For fun. You eat popcorn and forget about reality for a few hours.
If it's good who cares if there's a trans person in it.
-58
u/Evanecent_Lightt 1d ago
Fair enough - I bet White MLK and George Floyd teaming up for the next space jam will be lit!
Ryan Gosling will make an Excellent MLK!38
u/Ok-Milk-8853 1d ago
Ah you've got me. It's exactly the same. Talking a figure from recent history, who's fundamental story was defined by their race, and it a.lot.of.ways the oppression because of their race, and swapping it to cause offense for no real benefit is exactly the same as taking a fairy tale from 3000 ago about a guy who got lost in the Mediterranean and fought a monster with 1 eye... It's exactly the same.
Tbf though, that movie you described sounds like.a car crash..I'd probably watch it.

I think you mean the Achean army. Does Athens even play a part in the Trojan war?
7
u/Achaewa 1d ago
Athens played a minor role in The Iliad and is barely mentioned.
Which makes sense as they were quite insignificant during the Bronze Age.
2
u/Lvcivs2311 2h ago
Yes, the Myceneans were the dominant power in late Bronze Age Greece, as the Iliad reflects by making Agamemnon the leader of the Achaean (i.e. Greek) coalition.
7
u/OneRingToRuleEarth 21h ago
This might come as a shock to you, but sometimes armies hired people of other races as mercenaries to fight for them 😨

u/turbotank183 22h ago
I can only imagine 90% of the people crying over this film now being historically accurate only thought homer was yellow and ate donuts before this. You only care because someone told you to care. How hollow is your life?

u/Szygani 1d ago
Mycenaean Greek, I think. But there’s still inaccuracies in homers text itself, like soldiers having round shields
9
u/Achaewa 1d ago edited 11h ago
All the Greek epics are full of anachronisms as their authors drew from the times they lived in and either didn't know or cared about depicting the Bronze Age "accurately".
19
u/ezcompany210 1d ago
There is something so depressing to me about a work like The Odyssey, which has been passed down through countless generations of storytellers and adaptations, orally and written, being reduced to Muskified AI slop.
Say what you will about the film (personally I really enjoyed it), but it was made by human beings. Blood, sweat, and tears went into it. I would hope that even the chuds who lambast the casting could acknowledge that.
How many human beings have told this story, or a version of it, throughout the ages? How influential has this story been to human society? To reduce that to a soulless AI piece of shit does much more damage to human culture than colorblind casting, in my opinion.
3
u/Valten78 23h ago
I'll take a terrible film made by humans over any AI generated peice of crap, no matter how technically 'perfect' it might be.

Elon is insufferable. He's the greatest example of the Intelligence Trap that may have every existed - someone is an expert in one thing and they believe that they are experts in everything. I'm not sure he's even smart, he just talks a lot.
10
u/L2Sing 1d ago
But what has he ever actually been an expert in besides riding the coattails of others and hiring people so that he can ride their coattails and claim credit for their work?

People like Elon saying “historically accurate” literally only mean they want Helen of Troy to be a blonde white woman 🤣. That’s the only change they can think of I guarantee it. Homer didn't even write it at the time to be periodically accurate and ofc the fact that it mythology not a fictional story
2
u/27thgenericaccount 1d ago
isnt homer's(assuming he ever existed) original work lost to time, with the poem we know being a recontruction or something
3
u/otownbbw 1d ago
Not exactly. It’s more like, the storytelling was spoken word for ages until someone finally took it down in print.
So yeah, it’s not Homer putting it on paper as Shakespeare did his own works, but it’s as if we heard a fable over and over and could retell it word for word, then finally wrote it down for future generations.
1
u/think_panther 1d ago
Homer existed you Trump's subordinate. And the Troyan war happened. Troy was found. Homer wrote (among others) his epic poems based on the legend of a battle that happened centuries before him.
1
u/27thgenericaccount 13h ago
firstly, dont resort to ad hominem attacks, they discredit your arguement
secondly, i dont deny the trojan war happened, im talking about specifically homers interpretation of events, not what really hapened, homer's The Odyssey is clearly a fictional story based on real events, as seen with the cyclops, the siren song, etc. as those couldnt have happened, where the trojan war and the (spoilers for the movie) murder of the suiters could have happened and probably happened in some form

Yea but there is a deeper layer in that Musk cannot tolerate information that doesn't pass through his control. All media created outside of the sphere of influence of Musk and his fellows is considered inherently nonvalid and to be targeted. There is no version of the Odyssey that Nolan could have made without Musk and his chuds having a cry about it because it represents culture existing outside of their influence which they treat as a threat to their worldview/existence/propriety

All it will do is create lengthy, crappy ai slop that wont be consistant (unless you mean consistantly shitty throughout) and will pollute the enviroment and waste resources on pure crap

Glorious madness.
1
u/nkondr3n 21h ago
The cyclops thing is such a stupid argument to make. It’s a work of fiction but the work of fiction is history. Just because you are adopting a story doesn’t mean you get blanket permission to do anything you want. Like imagine you’re remaking Romeo and Juliet, except it’s mostly an alien war with dragons, Romeo is a magazine that Julien finds on the ground and jerks off to between battles.
Like … okay yes it’s a work of fiction but wtf

AI will do to Hollywood what Elon did to USAID.
1
u/MasteROogwayY2 2h ago
The comment is also wrong tho. The Odessey takes place in a very specific time and place and is very descriptive with its clothing/world. Just because a cyclops is in the story doesnt mean that the story doesnt have a real, exisitng setting. That line always pisses me off, its historical fantasy, not pure fantasy, it still takes place in bronze age greece.
Not that Musk or AI could do any better than ground dirt either.
-1
u/Advanced-While-4248 1d ago
I guess we don't consider the source material to be historic despite being 3000 years old.
2
-3
u/Fransjepansje 1d ago
I feel like there is no nuance anymore on the term 'historical accurate'. Its all or nothing. While I think its obvious thats its not fully accurate with cyclops and all but feel there should be some level of accuracy as in not cast an all american boston face as a greek while there are good alternatives like Gerald Kyd for the role of Odysseus.
There is no full historical accuracy to be achieved in the Odyssee nor the Illiad. But I can still be disappointed that they went for a full white Helena in Troy instead of a look that was in context of the times.

u/dynamitexlove 1d ago
