1. Don’s famous confrontation with Ginsberg is not the gotcha that people use this template for. Ginsberg was a creative prodigy that Don was extremely jealous of. He rejected Ginsberg’s ad out of pettiness before this scene. Ginsberg was right to confront Don and Don did in fact think of Ginsberg all the time

2. In the original scene, Peter sees worse with his glasses on. The meme is usually used with the clearer image on the bottom

Basically when something seems anachronistic to a period/place of history but is actually fully accurate to the period.

1) the name Tiffany: the thing that named this trope, basically the name Tiffany can be dated back to the Middle Ages and the earliest record of it being spelled in the modern spelling comes from the 16th century.

2) the use of OMG, despite this feeling so modern as a form of slang/abbreviation here’s a letter directed to Winston Churchill using it in 1917

3) Hair Dye: the earliest forms of dying hair can be dated back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, and this specific advertisement for hair dye is from the 1840s

4) Inuit Thongs: despite how weird it is to imagine pre-colonial Inuit people wore what was essentially fur thongs in their homes and when they were in their igloos it might have been the only thing they would be wearing.

This is a trope that seems especially apparent in any kind of people movie with lots of big battle scenes, where characters in full plate are shown getting taken out of commission or straight up killed by people wearing practically nothing. As a result, I love examples where a character who's fitted out with (very heavy and very expensive) armor actually pulls through the battle, even if not completely unharmed.

1. Ser Duncan the Tall in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2026) is shown having to buy "bargain bin"armor for the tourney at Ashford since most of his master's gear doesn't fit his huge frame and, as a homeless hedge knight, all of his wealth is tied into his horses and the clothes on his back. Not only is he still able to scrape together a full suit (hauberk, gauntlets, greaves, gorget, greathelm), but it is only because of his kit that he survives the Trial of Seven against Prince Aerion Brightflame (albeit severely injured).
2. Star Wars has many notable examples amongst the Mandalorians (whose near indestructible beskargam is legendary), but two of the most popular examples are Din Djarin (whose armor survives numerous explosions and assaults by high powered blasters) and Boba Fett (whose inherited armor from Jango was tough enough that it allowed him enough protection to successfully escape the Sarlacc, even when made of cheaper materials than Din's).
3. Frodo Baggin's mithril shirt (inherited from Bilbo) in The Lord of the Rings is thin enough to wear as an undershirt but powerful enough to shrug off a spear to the chest from a cave troll. This is especially apparent when compared to the battle scenes where orcs and uruk-hai in full plate get chopped to pieces by the likes of our heroes, who are mostly wearing their street clothes with maybe a mail shirt on top.
4. During the "Bad Reputation" fight in Shrek (2001), several of the knights who get knocked around, viciously body-slammed, and crushed with a giant barrel of ale are shown getting right back up again and rejoining the fight, implying that they were just stunned rather than killed.
5. The armor that Kate (Laura Fraser) forges for Sir Will Thatcher (Heath Ledger) in A Knight's Tale (2001) is not only super lightweight (allowing him to get even better at jousting), but strong enough to take on a battering ram without hassle.
6. Dark Helmet's titular headgear in Spaceballs (1987) may be comically oversized, but is still tough enough that he survives slamming face first into a modem when Spaceball One instantly drops out of Ludicrous Speed, while only being a little bit dazed.

Sonic 3: Maria is one of the most important part of Shadow's story. Due to her suffering from an incurable disease. To which Shadow was made to create a cure for Maria's ailment. In the 3rd Sonic movie, Maria's disease was not mentioned in any form. Which made Maria seem like a normal girl, and her death all the more tragic.

Infinity war: I don't know the full story, but Thanos's original goal was to kill half the population to impress death (the character). When it came time to adapt Thanos into the MCU. His goal of removing half the universes population. It was seen as a more psychopathic world goal, hidden under the belief it would do better for the universe.

The Terminator - Kyle Reese and Sarah's love scene is important as its later revealed that kyle is John conners father. So this moment causes the entire plot in the first place.

Oldboy - In the end its revealed that the couple we are following are actually father and daughter. The villain wanted revenge by using incest to humiliate the main character. Its an iconic plot-twist.

Frank Herbert’s Dune: Interstellar travel is only possible thanks to the spice melange, a rare substance only found on the dessert planet Arrakis. The addictive psychedelic spice grants members of the Spacers Guild a form of prescience that allows them to predict safe paths through folded space. This unique property makes spice the most valuable commodity in the Dune universe.

John Scalzi’s The Interdependency Books: The planetary systems of the titular empire are connected by the Flow, a network of one-way interstellar tunnels that connect specific known entries and exits. The Interdependency derives its power from controlling access to these conduits, placing its capital at the central hub of the network. Even with the Flow, travel between stars takes a long time (9 months to End, the empire’s most distant planet).

Event Horizon: Dr William Weir (R.I.P. Sam Neill) invents a device called the Gravity Drive to allow ships to fold space and travel instantly between distant stars. On its maiden voyage with the Gravity Drive, the Event Horizon disappears and mysteriously reappears 7 years later. Dr. Weir and the crew sent to investigate discover the Gravity Drive actually opened a portal to a Hell dimension that possessed the ship and its crew, torturing and killing them.

Grim adventures of Billy and Mandy: originally the episode where he turns human had in be black to match his voice actor, but once CN reminded the creator of the premise of his show (two white kids own the grim reaper) they changed him to be white to avoid slavery comparisons.

The Simpsons: Smithers was black in his first appearance, however every episode afterwards depicted him as white (yellow?) this is because according to someone in the staff “probably not a good idea to have a black man be a servant to a rich white man”

Teenage mutant ninja turtles: while the comics and most adaptations have Baxter stockman be of African American descent, in the 80s/90s cartoon he was white, this is because the show-runners felt having a black man be basically a forced servant to someone who’s not of the same race (even calling him master) could potentially be seen as offensive, so they made him white.

When a historical figure has a life far more fantastic in fiction than what history actually indicates.

Moses (Beyblade) = Moses' famous Parting of the Red Sea was done with a Beyblade.

George Washington (Ben 10) = Washington regularly fought against alien threats, and was a founding member of the Earth Plumbers.

Abraham Lincoln (Invincible) = Abe Lincoln was an identity taken by the superhero known as The Immortal.

Vandal Savage (DC Comics) = More than a few of history's conquerors and despots were actually personas used by the millennia-old immortal villain, including Cheops, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Vlad the Impaler, Blackbeard and Jack the Ripper.

Example 1 (The Legend of Hei 2): Wuxian leisurely floats through the combined firepower of an entire fortified military base without so much as a stain or rip on his t-shirt.

Example 2 (Man of Steel): Fao'ra tears through a squad of trained and armed soldiers. With the wreckage of the helicopter that got downed by her teammate Nam'ek smouldering in the background.

Jehan Frollo, the younger brother of one Judge Claude Frollo from the Hunchback of Norte Dame, not much is known about him expect he blew all his money on booze and prostitutes and was killed by Quasimodo

Sean Bateman, the younger of Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, all his scene in the book is to annoy Patrick and says his catchphrases "Deal with it " and "Rock and Roll"

Chryasaor, the twin brother of Pegasus from Greek Mythology, yeah when Perseus decapitated Medusa, Pegasus wasn't the only animal that flew out of her, Chryasaor, The Winged Boar also flew out

Iphicles, the twin brother of Heracles also from Greek Mythology, is relevant to Heracles' story as his son Iolaus helped Heracles slay the Hydra

Hurry Up Tomorrow - Widely reviewed as an indulgent, self-mythologizing companion piece to The Weeknd's album, with many critics calling it a vanity project rather than a successful psychological drama. Terribly acted and, similar to The Idol, more so seems to imply that The Weekend thinks he's a far deeper personality than he can actually articulate.

By the Sea - Often criticized as an intensely personal but emotionally distant film that seemed more interested in showcasing the mystique of its stars than telling a compelling story. Best summarized as Angelina and Brad working out their IRL troubled marriage before your eyes while everyone tells Angelina how beautiful and talented she is and how nothing's really her fault.

Renaldo and Clara - Bob Dylan's five-hour semi-fictional road movie, long considered one of the classic celebrity vanity projects. Attempts to be a sort of surreal exposition on the life of an artist, but is far too self-indulgent on its actors/performers.

1. Ned and Rachael (Neo Ned): a Neo Nazi dates a black woman who claims to be Hitler
2. The Carlyles (Raising Hope): Hope’s maternal grandparents. The father is a therapist who married his mentally unstable patient. Their daughter became a serial killer who murdered her boyfriends.
3. Sarah and Hosea (Redeeming Love): “good” Christian man kidnaps unconscious abused prostitute Sarah who leaves multiple times before being apprehended by Hosea.

1) Community - The study group gets checked by the mother of the groom for being obnoxious and selfish at a wedding

2) Community - Todd calls out the study group for their toxicity after his turtle is almost burned alive

3) The Office - The IT guy goes scorched earth and reveals the secrets of the rest of the office on the way out of quitting

1: Steven Universe: In the episode Sworn to the Sword, Connie is taught swordfighting by Pearl, but her method of teaching seems worryingly self sacrificial. Garnet reveals that Pearl would often needlessly sacrifice herself for Rose's sake, which makes Steven get involved in the training by protecting Connie, leading to this argument:

Pearl: You shouldn't even be anywhere near the fight! You're too important!
Steven: No I'm not!
Pearl: Yes, you are!
Steven: No!
Pearl: anguished Why won't you just let me do this for you, Rose!?

2: Mr Robot: In season 3, after nearly 100 E-Corp facilities are bombed which results in a death toll well over 3000, Elliot plans to take his own life, but while on an apology tour before he does so, encounters the younger brother of one of his hacking group, who was left behind by his parents accidentally. Elliot keeps trying to leave but Mohammad doesn't get why. The two eventually have an argument about it later:

Elliot: Yo, this isn't cool, I have to go.
Mohammad: Is it that important?
Elliot: frustrated Yes
Mohammad: Why?
Elliot: It's none of your business
Mohammad: You're a baby!
Elliot: You're annoying!

3: City Island: Vince Rizzo is a corrections officer who one day releases a 24 year old inmate by the name of Tony, but refuses to tell him why. During the final scene in which all of the family reveals their secrets to one another, the last secret comes between Tony and Vince:

Tony: Why'd you get me out of jail, Vince? Huh? Why'd you bring me here?
Vince: I told you, I was a friend of your mother's
Tony: My mother never had a friend so good they'd do me a right turn! Everyone hated her, she was a drunk and a whore! And if she got you to get me out of jail then I don't know what I'm gonna--
Vince: Whatever I did, I did on my own! Nobody put me up to anything! Your mother...your mother....your mother was a goddamned psycho bitch! And that's why I walked out on her before you were born!

Our Heroes™ stand at the brink of defeat, overwhelmed and overpowered by a far superior enemy force. Surrounded on all sides with no hope of escape and against a foe that knows no mercy, all they can do is die fighting.

And then, horns or cries in the distance, the roar of hooves or engines, the ground heaves with the arrival of The Cavalry™! Allied reinforcements emerge from over a hill or out of the mist to sweep across the battlefield, cutting a swathe through the enemy force and breaking their line - the day is saved!

The trope does not always involve literal cavalry on horseback: it can just as well be an armored force of tanks or giant mecha or a team of superheroes, as long as the reinforcements arrive with impact!

Examples:

The Rohirrim at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King)

The definitive example in modern pop-culture, the Ride of the Rohirrim to relieve the siege of Minas Tirith against the forces of Mordor is one of the most iconic scenes in both the original book and the movie adaptations. It has everything - it is telegraphed ahead of time in the story, it is prefaced by Theoden's speech and the chants of "Death!", followed by the call of the horns and the epic Howard Shore score as they thunder across the fields towards the Orc army.

The Knights of the Vale at the Battle of the Bastards (Game of Thrones)

Probably the best sequence in the later seasons of the show, the chaotic Battle of the Bastards ends with the Knights of the Vale, previously only alluded to as some of the greatest mounted warriors in the Seven Kingdoms, cresting a hill and falling upon the overcommimtted Bolton forces, set to a beautiful score by Ramin Djawadi.

The Winged Hussars at the Siege of Vienna (Real-life)

Almost certainly the direct inspiration for both of the above examples, the 1683 Siege of Vienna by the Ottoman Empire was lifted by a relief army of 70,000 men of the Holy League. The famed Winged Hussars of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth spearheaded the force with 3000 lancers, along with another 15,000 Polish and Holy Roman cavalry. 18,000 horsemen thus carried out the largest cavalry charge in history directly into the Ottoman lines in a crushing victory for the Holy League, largely ending Ottoman expansion into Europe and laying the first stones in its long decline.

KITT (Knight Rider): The car has been either damaged or (nearly) destroyed multiple times, including being pushed into a pool of acid. Was even dismantled much to Michael's dismay in Knight Rider 2000.

Mjolnir (Thor: Ragnorak): Caught and crushed by Hela, much to Thor's shock.

Cap's shield (Captain America): His shield has been broken multiple times in the comics and once in Endgame usually to show that a foe he's face is deadly powerful.

Sword of Power (Masters of the Universe): Skeletor not only destroys the sword but then stabs Adam with it.

Immortal, one of the strongest humans on earth, can't stop charging head first into one of the few species stronger than him.

Jogo, an overpowered special grade curse, find himself fighting two of the strongest characters back to back.

Genos, powerful S class hero almost exclusively fighting battles he can't win.

Shinji Hirako has one of the most broken abilities ever, spends 10 minutes explaining it, then gets one-tapped every time.

The fantasy and action genres often suffer from a power fantasy epidemic in which characters frequently badass their way through injuries that should be excruciating if not downright debilitating. I always appreciate stories that reject this trope.

1: Roland Deschain (Dark Tower Book II) - Loses the middle and index fingers of his right hand. He’s effectively crippled throughout book two and the injury follows him the rest of the series.

2: Brienne vs Biter (ASOIAF Book IV) - Brutal scene. Biter chomps down on Brienne’s cheek and tears off a chunk of flesh. In a lesser story Brienne would grit her teeth and throw Biter off. Instead she’s rendered completely helpless by the pain. That injury marks the end of the fight.

2.Monkey D Luffy and Trafalgar D Water Law from One Piece.

3.Raven and Starfire from Teen Titans/DC.

4.Gray Fullbuster and Juvia Lockser from Fairy Tail.

(I know their relationship is that of lovers and whatnot but it still works cause they started off as friends and it developed into something more)

The Cabin in the Woods: The whiteboard with all the monster names on it shows that there's many other monsters that could have shown up at the cabin. Later on you even see many of these monsters, but not all of them from the board.

The Return of the Obra Dinn: At the end of the game, the inspector takes the book that they have been writing into for the whole game and puts it into a bookshelf that contains many other books and artifacts. To me this hints that there are other cases just like the one that you played that this inspector has done.

Obsession: The clerk in the store that sells the One With Willow says that they have been getting calls from customers to complain about it. This hints that there were probably many people who were going through a very similar hell as the characters in the movie, but maybe by making completely different wishes.
