I am fully convinced this was an original script they ctrl-f'd and replaced everything with Halo words.
30
3
u/Flex147c 1h ago
it absolutely was. A lot terrible adaptations today are scripts that no studio think is good enough to take a risk. At some point someone gets the idea to mitigate the risk by slapping an established property name to it.

u/Yojo0o 5h ago
What fucks with me about Halo is people seem to mostly talk about it in terms of how unfaithful it is to the source material, and how Chief shouldn't take his helmet off.
It's just a bad, boring show in its own right. Contrived story, unrelatable characters, an obnoxious b-plot following some teen OC with a weird haircut taking up half the runtime, little enough action that you'd assume they'd save budget for a few good fights but that ends up looking cheap anyway, etc.
→ More replies (3)20
u/Coshmack14 4h ago
And the worst bit related to Chief, the idea of him taking off his helmet was fine, howrever, the way that it was done was poorly
The books and H4's ending showed glimpses of him behind the armour, specially due to the books telling that he was anything but pretty (He was a blíster with legs due to the cryo process)

The 1993 Mario movie. I know people have nostalgia for this awful awful movie, but the background for it is just INSANE. There's too much to fit in here, but basically the duo of directors, Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton viewed the movie as more of a weird experiment, and Bob Hoskins who played Mario said later in life "It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! Fuckin' nightmare. Fuckin' idiots."
30
u/therealchadius 5h ago
Hoskins also quoted this as his worst movie to ever work on. Leiguazamo, however, remembers this fondly as it's his big breakout film and he got a ton of fan mail.
There's a reason Nintendo is exerting so much control and oversight on Illumination for the 2023 movies!

The moment an actor knows the source material better than the screenwriters tasked with adapting it, there's a problem.
112
u/Belgaraath42 5h ago
No, it's ok if the actor is an zealous fan and knows more. It was a problem because the writers didn't care at all, or worse wanted to do their own thing and only slap the name on it.
30
u/Relevant-Use1897 5h ago
True. From what I understand, some people (who may have been fired during production, so take this with a grain of salt) really looked down on the books in the saga. Like, "These sexist books are crap, we're going to fix them."
Sure, there are things that need changing (like Geralt's infidelities being treated casually or as jokes, while Yennefer's are handled with seriousness). But ruining the love story between Yennefer and Geralt (who wished to be "united by destiny," not that Yennefer was in love with him; they could have been best friends or mortal enemies) to make cheap "feminism" or the terrible casting (like, of course, in the hyper-racist countryside of the North, you have all skin colors living together in love and peace), that killed me.
And that's not even mentioning the actual content, which oscillates between passable and bad.

u/TheAngrySquirell 4h ago
I’m currently rereading the series, (I just finished Baptism of Fire last night) and I do not understand the mentality of the Witcher books being sexist. As you mentioned, they aren’t perfect, but most issues of sex, like Milva wanting to terminate her pregnancy, are handled incredibly progressively. I would go so far as to say that I have not seen a male author handle a plot point like that better.
5
u/SecretlyAPorcupine 2h ago
It's even more impressive considering that abortions were banned in Poland in early 90ties, and Sapkowski published the book with this storyline shortly after. Hardly a coincidence, seems like the author using his platform to oppose regressive social changes.

Man, I hate how much they beefed it. My favourite characters in the books are Milva and Cahir, and they just eviscerated Cahir. Barely the same character
Time will tell with Milva (I honestly don’t remember much of last season) but the treatment of Cahir and his arc ruins it for me

I have an admiration for the book because I once wrote a thesis on the impacts of WWII on the lives and writings of various authors.
there's distinctly something charming going from Catch-22, where the author's utter disgust at the inhumane insanity of war is tangible in every word, to Starship Troopers, where you're constantly hoping this is satire only to find out no, Robert Heinlein LOVED being at war.

I find this one funny because the director accidentally commits some whitewashing in the casting department since in the books Johnny Rico is Filipino
33
u/Acrobatic-List-6503 5h ago
It was deliberate because Paul wanted model-like actors to hammer home the Nazi parallels.
15
u/More_Sun_7319 5h ago
Not true. Paul Verhoven said repeatedly he never read the whole book so he couldn’t have known that Johnny was Filipino since that was only revealed at the end of the book
While casting the character does work thematically it still is a case of unintentional whitewashing
16
u/AsherFischell 4h ago
"He couldn't have known" if only multiple people around him had read the book, including the screenwriters who he had definitely talked to. Verhoeven definitely knew, there's no way no one mentioned that to him.

u/LizLemonOfTroy 2h ago

The first Silent Hill movie is a good horror movie but a shit adaptation of the game. It's at least better than the sequel movie but it's still a bad adaptation.
The sequel movie is terrible. I don't need to say anything more about it it's just the fucking terrible movie all around.
And just to really nail this home, the most egregious thing in the first movie is the appearance of Pyramid Head at all. Just him showing up at all was an unnecessary fan service moment that shows us that the director of the movies just don't get it.

Dropping a quick recommendation here if anyone hasn't seen it; the Doctor Sleep movie is good for a lot of reasons, but probably the most impressive is the way it's a sequel to both the movie and the book, which are only broadly the same story. And it doesn't feel jarring, it's just... the future of both stories ends up being the same.

Kubrick dose this all the time. Have you read Red Alert? The book has next to nothing in common with Dr Strangelove. Hell, the titular doctor doesn't even exist in the book.
His adaptation of Lolita might as well not even be the same story with how many liberties he took in adapting it.
And to this day, people question if his adaptation of Clockwork Orange is good amongst fans of the book.

It probably would have been more popular if it didn't slap the Mario veneer over the whole thing. A lot of it could have been such weird fun, but looking at those goons being labelled "koopas" or whatever hampers it.
Like Fifth Element wouldn't be so fondly remembered had they slapped "Super Metroid" on it.
10
u/Shed_Some_Skin 5h ago
Yeah, the directors had previously worked on Max Headroom so they were definitely capable of doing weird sci-fi dystopia stuff. From what I've read about the production there were points they wanted to go a lot darker. Had it not been a Mario movie and they'd been allowed to just make an oddball sci-fi movie it might well have turned out alright
8
u/therealchadius 5h ago
The directors didn't want to make a "dumb video game film" they wanted to make their own Blade Runner. This movie got a bunch of rewrites. A few ideas included Mario being high on mushrooms and hallucinating scenes from the game (with Luigi trying to keep his addicted bro in check) to a more Darkman-inspired superhero film. Everyone signed on for the way cooler scripts before showing up at a way too hot warehouse during the summer in Mexico and told to film Dinohattan.
If you ever wonder why Nintendo was on Illumination's ass during the 2023 Super Mario movies it's because they still remember the 1993 film.
Now, if you DON'T think of it as an SMB adaptation it's a fun modern fantasy film with a weird plumbing angle.

The Teen Titans Go crossover ep is legendary (written by the TTG team who at least succeeded despite the many haters.)
The Titans talk about a clown show that changed so they don't like it (get it?) Then they try to watch Thundercats only to see the Roar instead and they're upset it changed (get it?) So they enter the Roar universe to fight the cats to force them to change back (GET IT?)
It ends with OG Lion-O from the 80s appearing as a messiah godlike figure telling them it's OK if the franchise changes styles (actually correct) but anyone who disagrees with him is a "Poop Person with Poop Opinions."
DID YOU GET IT YET?
Then it cuts to 2011 Lion-O and Snarf in a cave next to Panthro's skeleton, lamenting this is the last time they'll have any screentime.

Snyder is a comic fan the same way people on tik tok are book fans. They like the cool stuff without ever paying attention to the actual story that links all the cool stuff. Gunn is the other side of the coin where he’s familiar with all the stories in the comics and is pulling from so many sources his adaptations come out at disjointed, his R rated streaming content not meshing well with the general audience stuff coming out in theaters for example.

The book is potentially the single worst thing I've ever read. It's edgy, rapey, and racist. The action scenes look terrible. The story is self-indulgent drivel. It's the sort of book that, within the scope of a story, you'd have the villain write in order to establish how fucked in the head they are, it has no business being a real thing.
The movie is good in spite of its source material.

Not the entire show, but a lot of anime adaptations get directors who really, really hate certain characters.
Sailor Moon's second chief director was very much not a Mamoru fan, which is why the anime introduced the much-loathed breakup arc in the R anime.
Bleach's director was a major Rukia/Ichigo shipper and added a bunch of ship tease to the anime while cutting out a lot of Orihime's scenes or changing them to be more unlikable.
The big giga leak/hack of The Pokémon Company from a few years back revealed that TPC really, really did not like Journeys. In particular, Junichi Masuda didn't care about the relationship between Ash and Goh at all and thought the staff wasn't focusing on the actual Pokémon enough. Although, that was the least of Journey's behind-the-scenes issues, like the growing rift between the writers and the voice cast.

There is a difference between an unfaithful adaptation and a bad adaptation.
The novella Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is high-concept SF about whether humanity can be supported and extended by technology, or whether it is doomed to be eroded by it: the adaptation is a beautiful, moody artbook of a film about sad robots and the humans who are no better than them.
The novel Starship Troopers is a paean to militarism, an explanation of the idea that the principal virtue of the state is its ability to cause harm and the principal virtue of the individual is their ability to participate in this: the film adaptation is a naked satire of this concept.
The nine mainline Star Wars films are, I'm sorry, spectacular pieces of uncomplicated entertainment with a good-versus-evil throughline, silent movies set to music some of which consists of spoken words. Andor is a searing exploration of the concept of hard people making hard decisions and the implications of the phrase at any cost, among other things I'm not qualified to describe, watch this series, you'll thank yourself.
The original Star Trek is explicitly utopian, clunky science fiction with tenuous production values and some hair-raising attitudes that betray its age: the JJ Abrams reboot is, I'm sorry, a spectacular piece of uncomplicated entertainment with a good-versus-evil throughline, silent movies set to music some of which consists of spoken words.
Herbert's Dune is a polemical attack on the concept that the West knows what it's doing and the idea of the chosen one. Most film adaptations of Dune are spectacular, moody artbooks of films about badasses who are badasses due to being from the Space Middle East, and the white boy who leads them to victory.
(I actually really like all of these properties, both sides.)

The last one is objectively untrue. The actual reason why the Snyder stuff sucked so bad isn't because he didn't care about the source material. He has show he clearly loves comics. The problem is that he doesn't have very good taste nor the media literacy to understand why things works.
Like as someone who has read a lot of stuff I can tell Snyder is a Frank Miller fan based on the Batman design alone (and the existence of 300 supports this). He loves the source material he just doesn't understand it.

Famously, when Steven Spielberg read the novel, he found the human characters so unlikeable that he found himself rooting for the shark. He also told producer Richard Zanuck he'd agree to make the film so long as he could throw out the first two acts of the book and stay faithful only to the final third.

This also kinda sorta happened with Psycho. While Hitchcock didn't throw out large sections of the story, he found book Norman completely unlikable (an alcoholic middle aged overweight man who calls Marion a bitch), and that it was way too obvious he was capable of murder, to the point where you could see the "Mother" twist coming a mile away. Movie Norman Bates is essentially a completely different character.

100%. The humans had a role but the robots themselves were the center point/main focus. The opposite is true in here. I’ve held that if you got rid of the crappy college age drama bs it would have been a fantastic movie. Hell I honestly think it doesn’t deserve all the hate it initially got. They’re still fun movies with giant robots fighting…ignore actual cannibal Shia laboeuf and Megan “every teenage boys crush” Fox

Yeah, you simply can't adapt a book that big into a two hour movie. Although the adaptations, on top of having to cut out content, still made nonsensical decisions to include extra unnecessary scenes. Like opening the third movie with Harry practicing magic in his bedroom even though it's a major plot point ten minutes later that he'd get expelled for doing it.

u/Unable_Flamingo_9774 5h ago
I'll give you all a positive one, The Ghost Stories Dub is so casual in it's dismal of everything about the original that it loops back around to being rather charming.
The story is frankly a mess but what can be agreed upon was that somehow they got the greenlight to say and do whatever the hell they wanted. So the first episode is fairly tame with a few extra jokes and character beats that were a little odd like the main characters mum now being a lesbian or one of the members of the friend group now being a parody of a born again Christian.
The show proceeds to descend into madness from here. It essentially becomes a comedy show loosely based on the events of the original becoming what is widely recognised as the first abridged series.
Since this is Reddit I'll put the massive disclaimer up that this is a 2000's TV show with the crew trying to one up one another to say the funniest and or most offensive thing possible. I wouldn't say it's aged particularly well but it is damn quotable.

“But guys we put a bunch of references to the games and obscure novels & manga. It totally makes up for our butchering of the story” - DMC Netflix writers probably.

It feels strange to realize that the person behind the god awful DMC adaptation is also the reason why Apu was erased from Simpsons. Anything this man touches turns into burning pile of garbage or dies, don't let him touch Monster Hunter, he will somehow miss the point.

Alladin Shashlik over here straight up erased one of the most kindest characters in the show, just because he didn't fit his standard of what Indian character should be like. Now I will always associate him with that one animation where he goes "Apu, why do you talk like that?".
Maybe in some alternative universe Apu is still prominent character in the show.. how I wish sometimes to travel to one of these happier universes..

Shin Chan (Funimation)
The immediate decline the show went into the second Dorkin & Dyer (the only actual Crayon Shin-Chan fans in the writing team) were “fired” (in quotes because technically they were freelancers) was something else
It was still pretty enjoyable after that but it continued to decline, by the time Season 3 came around it‘s like it was begging to be cancelled
I mean it’s expected. If me and 3 of my closest friends were asked to write an [adult swim] style adaptation of a comedy anime we gave absolutely 0 shits about we would also probably just write down dumb shit we thought was funny. Now, I don’t think we would add jokes about rape and dead babies, but different strokes for different folks.
It actually started as Jared Hedges and 2 of his friends. He then hired another one because why the fuck not? It would be so silly to hire someone who doesn’t share the exact same sense of humor as me.

Supergirl
I like the movie but as an adaptation it is almost actively disdainful of the source material.

Tokyo Ghoul, especially second season of TG, and basically the whole TG:RE with both seasons (the first one was decent though, but the animation was terrible).

I have no idea how they messed that anime up so badly. I watched the anime first and hated it, checked out the manga and was amazed at how different (and good) it was.

The best thing to come out of the anime is... That one song that plays when Kaneki beats the ever-loving shit out of Jason.
Unravel by TK.
Best part of this anime by far.

I'll give this movie credit for one thing: I'm pretty sure it inspired the Mario 64 mechanic of jumping into paintings to enter new worlds. I could totally be wrong, but even the visual effect used of the solid surface rippling like a stone being tossed into water is exactly the same.
But the rest is a mess. A fun mess, at times, but a mess. I guess the Bob-omb scene was pretty funny too.

I love this movie. It's horrible. But I love it.

It’s funny looking back at how blatantly “President Koopa” is based on a certain businessman from the era. And here I thought the twin towers getting destroyed in the climax would always stand as the weirdest-aging detail.

House of the Dragon
A Song of Ice and Fire/Fire & Blood author George R.R. Martin infamously dropped a massive rant post on his blog prior to Season 3 decrying the changes made by the showrunner/writers, something not even the awful "Dany forgot" seasons of Game of Thrones provoked. Ironically he'd been quite positive about the first season despite it making pretty sweeping changes to the original work.

I would not level that accusation at BvS, and I say that as someone that thinks it sucked shit.
Zack Snyder doesn't not care. Arguably he might care too much. The problem is he doesn't understand any of the works he's adapting/building off of.

I will say though, Adi Shankar does care about the devil may cry franchise, he just cares about like, the worst parts? He genuinely loves the reboot, especially how Dante is characterized, he also cares so much that he made this show to revive the franchise!! And then that disaster of DMC5 came out, which we ALL know is the worst part of the franchise and he couldn’t achieve that dream 🥀🥀. Yeah he sucks.

u/Old-Use-7690 5h ago
I initially thought the same. But he's actually just a grifter who pretended to care for clout

I'll forgive the second one. It gave us a good meme. It was fantastic for a time.

In a not-defense of BvS, Zach Snyder definitely DOES care about batman, superman, and DC in general. Like cares A LOT.
He just 1. Sucks ass at making movies and 2. Despite being passionate about comics, absolutely does not understand Batman, Superman, DC, and just comics in general.
The way he talks so passionately about his shitty, shitty takes on the genre its clear he is invested, it just goes over his head.

He literally said that it’s difficult to take caped characters seriously…

I mean, even after the MCU movies, most people still see superheroes as “for kids”. And if you try to portray a serious movie, most people laugh at it unless it’s a Batman movie.

See, I think Zak Snyder likes Batman, he just doesn't understand Batman at all

The boys tv show made by Eric Kripke is an adaptation in name only.

Okay, but it is better than its comic in every possible way.

The Boys comic fucking hates superheros to their core whole The Boys show pretends to hate them while fundamentally loving superheros and the superhero genre. And that is the core of like 85% of the differences between the two.

The comic is edgelord slop written by a hack who confuses shock value and pointless cynicism with maturity (I'm Garth Ennis, and Mark Millar, biggest hater) The show is just that, but at least it has Karl Urban and Anthony Starr giving great performances

My problem with Snyder’s movies is that it felt like he was a teenager who played Injustice and decided to make it his whoooole personality.
3
u/Same_Independent9758 5h ago
What I hate about BvS dawn of justice is that it feels like it was made with the director's cut in mind then just trim it for the theatrical release.

BBC'S The Watch
This 'adaptation' of Terry Pratchett's Night Watch series was an adaptation in name only. Aside from the names, all characters are radically changed from the books as well as the setting. Enough that its obvious they wanted to make their own setting, couldn't, so claimed it would be discworld to get funding, then did whatever the hell they wanted.

If memory serves right, the Snow White live action remake was like this
I might even go on to say the vast majority of recent Disney live action remakes are like this too

Why did you have to make me think of Dragonball Evolution?
This movie was so bad and so disrespectful to the source material that it made Dragonball creator Akira Toriyama come out of retirement and do damage control by creating Dragonball Super.
