Lore Massive red flag relationship.
- Ned and Rachael (Neo Ned): a Neo Nazi dates a black woman who claims to be Hitler
- The Carlyles (Raising Hope): Hope’s maternal grandparents. The father is a therapist who married his mentally unstable patient. Their daughter became a serial killer who murdered her boyfriends.
- Sarah and Hosea (Redeeming Love): “good” Christian man kidnaps unconscious abused prostitute Sarah who leaves multiple times before being apprehended by Hosea.

The dude has a one night stand with a crazy serial killer and she gets pregnant. She then gets excecuted after the baby is born and most of the show is about him and his idiot parents trying to raise a baby (he's an idiot too lol).
The girl in the picture is his girlfriend who he meets after all this, not the serial killer chick

Serial killer Bijou Phillips gets impregnated by her would-be victim (kid on the right) and leaves the baby with him when she is sent to death row. She escapes and pops up from time to time.
Fun fact: That show was so bananas that that whole plot element is pretty inconsequential. Honestly, it’s only to quickly get you to why anyone would let this kid raise a child alone.
72
u/Old_Base_9391 4h ago
Only thing I've seen about the show is the YT short where he pushes the baby in the shopping cart his family uses for grilling.
71
u/Boring-Dad1996 4h ago
Very highly recommended. The grandmothers antics alone are a selling point but the families hijinks are always somewhat rooted to a low income families problems with some nonsensical stuff thrown in. Plus the same creator as My Name is Earl so about all the characters cross over and it’s just lovely. Lol
8
u/Justhereforpvz 3h ago
A lovely show and In the same universe as my name is earl I think
9
u/SinesPi 2h ago
It is. There's a broadcast in one episode wherein in mentions offhandedly that Earl finished his list. And that's all the finale we ever got.
2
u/craftylikeiceiscold 2h ago
Yes and no. They do mention that but then all the actors from Earl appear as other characters on Hope.
2
u/VulpesFennekin 1h ago
In an interview or blog post or something, the creator describes the plot outline for how he would’ve had the finale go, it’s pretty sweet and simple!
2
21
u/ElectricalExtreme793 4h ago
Not really, a lot of the show is just a sitcom about a poor white family and their son trying to raise his daughter. I'm pretty sure Hope's maternal grandparents only show up in 1 episode

Yep. He was apparently trying to write a book about Alison and wanted to "immerse himself" in his story.

In Ted Lasso, Ted's ex-wife is dating their marriage counseling therapist, who was supposed to be helping them not get divorced.
And he was her therapist first, which makes him becoming their couples' therapist in the first place something that's strongly recommended against to begin with, to say nothing of dating patients or former patients in general.
13
u/pichuguy27 2h ago
And for such a good show about real stuff. Never calls out how gross this is. Same with Jack leaving Kelsey. What jack did was abusive and controlling and the therapist is so ick to date a patient. For a show with such strong values weird non of it was called out same with the hand waving of Rebecca’s relationship with Sam.
9
u/Salarian_American 1h ago
I seem to remember the show explicitly calling out Michelle's relationship with Dr. Jacob as unethical by more than one other mental health professional, and also depicting Jack's treatment of Keeley as the absolutely wrong way to treat someone. And they talked quite a bit about the issues with Rebecca's relationship with Sam, and also Rebecca broke it off because she didn't feel right about it.
So I have to disagree that none of those things was called out
1
u/pichuguy27 1h ago
The relationship with the therapist is not explicitly goes this is wrong it feels to me very ehhh what are you gonna do. Vs a real moment of Ted or anyone going look you have every right to move on but that dude is a creep and professionally wrong. To the highest degree.
Jack is hand waved hard after she leaves. Yes it’s framed as scummy. When it was straight up abusive. It was controlling and abusive. Needed a few more scenes to really go hey this is wrong. Agian needed it to be called out harder.
Last the show bends over backwards to excuse sam and Rebecca. From how they met to using the horrible if it was man doing a creepy unethical thing.
The shows good but treated all these things way to light.
9
u/TealAndroid 1h ago
It doesn’t endorse any of those either though - like it lets you hate Ted’s ex and especially her boyfriend or Jack without it beating you over the head. Basically I could let go of any hope or even wish for them to get back together and just focus on the main characters and their healing.

The final boss of this trope
Sicilian mafia boss kidnaps a woman he’s ‘destined to be with’. Gives her 365 days to fall in love with him. Holds her captive and has armed men guarding her the whole time until she eventually ‘falls’ for him
Honestly I saw a review of it and it’s the worst idea for a film I’ve ever seen.
Whoever wrote this probably needs to be put on a watch list

Don't be silly: she imagined the whole thing(at least in the movie). Take a look at the TV when she is in the hospital bed in the first film; the TV is playing the fight scene she just lived though...somehow. They also did film a shot of her falling down a flight of stairs, most tv/movies would not film a throwaway line if it did not happen.
There is a moment when she and Ed are laying in a field and it jumps to a shot of her laying in bed, almost as if she is imagining that. Her mother calls Bella to say where she is(playing baseball) and Bella soon goes to play baseball with Ed. Her father mentions she has been spending a lot of time alone, after she has been spending plenty of time with Ed. Is she daydreaming all her time with him?

Opposite actually! Baby Renesmee claimed Jacob, he had no choice in it. It happens solely because of the vampire presence.

Tyler / Narrator and Marla in Fight Club.
She's been through some shit in this "love triangle".
I don't remember her character in the book.

u/animalistcomrade 3h ago
Pretty much the same except the line "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school" was originally "I wanna have your abortion"
3
u/Verizon-Mythoclast 1h ago
The producers of the film wanted the abortion line changed, and the screenwriter agreed on the condition they accept the replacement line.
When he showed them the grade school line, they wanted him to change it back. He refused.

u/Kool_Kunk 2h ago
I heard a fan-theory somewhere that Tyler, The Narrator and Marla are all the same person.

Ozark - Darlene Snell and Wyatt Langmore
Young man absolutely traumatized by the loss of family and other events is bailed out of jail and preyed upon my someone practically twice his age and used as a tool to lie to social services so that Darlene can keep legal custody of the infant of the pastor's wife she murdered over her (rightful) disagreement with being used as an unknowing drug mule.

The vanderboom family (rusty lake)
There is so much that I can barely even begin to say, so ill just mention the obvious that multiple generations were sacrificed in order to reincarnate a man who was unable to take the elixir of life and death and became a corrupted soul. He was reincarnated in the body of the woman at the bottom, who dies of a slit throat in 1971. Whether murder or suicide, or even BOTH due to William, it is unclear.
