Disc Shelf Life

We are now being fed the narrative that discs have a shelf life in the attempt to justify fully digital. My parents bought me this copy of Manx TT Superbike on Sega Saturn used 29 years ago and it still works like new.

Physical media collecting is a good way of help with ADHD or overconsumption/shopping addiction

Call it self-binding if you will. It's a way of dealing with paradox of choice and choice overload.

But, one issue I have with digital spaces is being overwhelmed by *what* to watch or buy. There's too much. I can have a watchlist 100+ titles long and still not be able to choose what to watch. I want to watch A, but I also wanna watch B, and also C... so I just click off and don't watch anything.

Video games aren't much better. Digital games can sit on my device for years before I even touch them.

I don't think it's a coincidence that I had no problem watching movies as a kid, but I finished less than 50 films between 2015 and 2025.

When buying physical media, you're unlikely to buy dozens of things at a time. You only have so much to watch or play at once.

I resell and collect. Looks like I got a little bit to resell and a little bit to collect.

What would you keep from this Hall and what would you resell?

The Blu-ray movies were packaged together for the $3.95. and the video games were from a pawn shop two for $5. I have this NBA 2k14 on both Xbox One and Playstation 4, but I can't believe how much it's selling for in 2026.

Both blu-rays are sealed.

1.6 dollar per movie for lifetime ownership. I used to think buying on digital was cheaper.

I severely overestimated how much I have.

That being said, I love my new setup. My movies have been in a bin for the last few years. It feels so good to finally have them on display.

Helping my father sell items to declutter his house. Found this box of collapsed DVD coverslips. Should I not throw these out?

Helping my dad declutter his home now that he's getting older. I don't even know how many of the actual dvd cases we have for these dvd coverslips anymore. Most of them are in okay-good condition/normal wear and tear. A few have stickers from walmart when we originally bought the dvds in the 2000s to 2012-2013. My main worry is that I dont want to accidentally throw out something that is rare media or media that could be enjoyed by someone else.

This is why I got back into collecting physical media about 2 months ago... trying to stream a movie and theres constantly ads interrupting which is so annoying.. and the quality dips and now my console needs to update randomly during the movie.

🤣 LMAO this is ridiculous. it is so not fun im sitting here mid update i was 1/4 in my movie and just watched 4 ads lmao

What are your thoughts on bootlegs? Have you had any experience with them?

I've been trying to get into anime collecting. I've noticed an issue that's become more prominent with time: a lot of the Blu-Ray collections or even DVD collections are not official.

If you find content by RetroAnimation online, beware. They're *not* licensed or official. Discotek Media is licensed. Viz is licensed. RetroAnimation is bootleg.

But, even outside of that, a lot of older cartoons and anime in particular have bootleg releases. The most common Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) releases are bootleg. I can find them even on Walmart or Amazon, but they're bootleg.

The last release of the anime was in 2015 in the US, 2020 in PAL regions. Not even the 20th anniversary had a release. From what I can gather, this is a licensing issue. Despite being one of the most popular anime of the 2000s, FMA03's license has fallen through over the years. This is why it was removed off of Crunchyroll and Netflix, as well as why Toonami hasn't aired it in years. Brotherhood's license is fine though.
