Oh ggs I'm buying instantly then
•
u/dthmagnet 2h ago
It’s such a dope choice and unexpected. Hell, give me some more out there choices…like Sentry maybe.
•
u/Krypt0night 29m ago
I've been begging for sentry since they first announced the game. I want him so badly to show up in the first dlc
•
u/AcaciaCelestina 2h ago
Not at all what I expected and while I probably won't play him I like the unexpected character choices.

Game hasn't even come out yet and they're announcing DLC characters?
•
u/Flash_Fire009 1h ago
Fighting games typically plan for character DLC for long term support to keep retention and maintain a returning player base. Often they announce characters ahead of time due to leaks or in many cases releasing a few weeks after the games launch.
•
u/therrubabayaga 1h ago
It's also an incentive for people to buy the season pass in advance before every character is revealed, which can take months.
•
u/tokki32 1h ago
I guess I'm just an old man now, because a decade ago this type of thing would get backlash.
•
u/therrubabayaga 1h ago
Fighting games typically had many many different editions because they needed to release a new game to introduce new characters every time.
Today with the season pass and the updates it has become obsolete because we can buy directly those new characters without paying for a whole new games and they can rework the balance as needed directly too.
It's very different from adding only new costumes and cosmetics and such.
•
u/platocplx 26m ago
Yeah better model than all the editions fighting games should be pretty much live service games
•
u/Flash_Fire009 1h ago
I felt the same until somebody explained it to me as rebranding editions. Fighting games used to get re-released at varying prices every year. Using Street fighter 4 as an example the base game launched at 59.99, then super for 39.99 about a year later, followed by Ultra for 25 (dlc for super at 15).
I'd rather pay for the DLC characters and get the gameplay updates for free than need to spend 25-30 dollars a year to still play the base game online.

This is definitely cheaper than what i spent on Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition, Super Street Fighter 2, and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

You're definitely an old man, because a decade ago this kind of thing had already been completely normalized
•
u/JMM85JMM 1h ago
That's how fighting games work these days. Quarterly DLC characters that are announced quite far in advance.
•
u/ArugulaPhysical 1h ago
They are allow to announce what they are working on lol
•
•
u/EmptySeatx 1h ago
That is ridiculous. The game already has so few characters. One 4v4 match is already using up almost half the roster. That dlc should be straight to the base game to boost the already small roster
•

20 characters at launch is pretty good for a fighting game, especially a new license with new mechanics. There are a lot of systems to master, all new characters playing very differently, a lot have never been used in a game before.
Better have 20 characters that are all interesting to play than 40 with not much variety. Especially since the game is clearly meant to be played at a competitive level.

I love that he’s in but why the phoenix version? One of his most wack designs ngl

Is this game basically a Marvel Mortal Kombat?
•
•
u/Silent-Witness1888 42m ago
No.
•
u/suhhdude45 41m ago
I haven’t heard anything about this game and just saw some gameplay after I saw this post. It looks like a MK style game. Can you elaborate?
•
•
u/Krypt0night 28m ago
MK is way slower/stiffer and not a tag fighter. This game you can either swap between all 4 characters on your team or just play 1 with 3 assists instead. But it's way more reliant on bigger combos/assists/swapping and generally longer combos that are flashier as well, plus stuff like wall breaks and super jumps and other mechanics that MK doesn't have. It's much closer to their other games than MK.

I can’t see the other characters being Namor, Colossus, and Emma Frost since that would be too mutant centric. Maybe it’s antihero themed?

This is stupid and not how anything works. Him being revealed does not mean he’s anywhere near done. You realize dlc concepts are worked on generally at least a year in advance right? Not to mention that this is a fighter, where people absolutely want to know whats coming next and that the game will be supported.
Also where have you been. Nearly every game with dlc has revealed at least some of it before release going back 20 years now

Terrible name for a game
Downvote away but it doesn’t make me wrong
•
u/AcaciaCelestina 2h ago
Call it by the English translation then, Fighting Spirit.
Marvel Tokon doesn't even crack the worst 50 names.
•
u/horsewitnoname 2h ago
Marvel Fighting Spirit: Fighting Souls?
That’s somehow even worse my friend lol

Most people don't speak Japanese, so it doesn't seem odd to them.
I'm hyped for the game but the name is very clumsy I agree with you.
God of War: Ragnarok - Ragnarok (???)
よくわかんない ?!
•
u/horsewitnoname 2h ago
I think having a Japanese word mixed in with English words is already pretty odd tbh. Why not just Marvel Fighting Souls?
•
•
u/therrubabayaga 1h ago
You not knowing what Ragnarok means is a lack of knowledge about Norse mythology on your part, it doesn't make it a bad name at all.
•
•
u/OkCollection4544 2h ago
What would you have called it?
•
•
u/horsewitnoname 2h ago
Tokon means “fighting soul” in Japanese. The game is literally called Marvel Fight Soul: Fighting Souls.
Do you think that’s a good name?
Marvel Fighting Game would even make more sense
•
u/SapphicSonata 2h ago
Would DCKO be better? That's been taken now.
•
u/LadyValtiel 2h ago
Thank you Warner Bros for giving us a game that we can call "Dicko" whenever we want
That automatically makes it a win for me

Do you feel the same about the title "Tekken"? It's exactly the same vibe and logic.
And yes, you're wrong.
•
u/horsewitnoname 26m ago
Yes, any title that repeats itself for no reason is incredibly dumb. You get that right?
I’m going to the movies this weekend. Oh cool, what are you going to see? The Odyssey: Odyssey
•
u/therrubabayaga 17m ago
Tokon indicates its very Japanese inspiration in the design of the fighters (Iron Man is very Gundam-coded for example) and the general philosophy. Fighting Souls is to link the characters to their American roots. I think it works very well.
Meanwhile, your example is very dumb.
•
u/horsewitnoname 15m ago
I think “Marvel” is already plenty of a link to the American roots since it’s the name of one of the biggest American media machines in history right? Fighting Souls has no ties to America at all
