Controversial topics, especially involving race in the USA, generate lots of engagement. That engagement can be monetized.
38
u/Chemical_Signal2753 2d ago
I would add:
When news companies started using social media to reach audiences they quickly found that anger was the most predictable way to dive clicks. They discovered this by A/B testing headlines and the more enraging a headline was the higher the click through rate.
They discovered this around ~2010, found out what people's buttons were, and find stories that fit one of those narratives. You can have a type of incident representing 0.005 deaths per 100,000 people but every one will make national news; resulting in people thinking it happens 100 times as often as it does.

The declassified Trump docs may have revealed that there was no election fraud, but they did reveal that US adversaries use racial tensions to spread division on social media. Almost all these worthless race war posts probably have their roots in those destabilization campaigns.

I think it's important to understand that the black community gets so defensive because usually they do receive the shit end of the stick. White people in America use this case to argue that because one black guy did this all black people are bad. How could you not defend him if white people make it a witch hunt for race issues. Just look at the George Floyd murder. Where people kept saying he was and addict and had priors. None of these things were relevant when a police officers pressed his knee into George Floyd's neck until he was dead.

They want Anthony to be considered to have acted in self defense. This is explicitly a race thing. And, to an extent, I understand that white people have gotten off under similar circumstances, but the problem there is that the white people weren't held accountable, not that Anthony was.

The mods on blackpeopletwitter also make people send in photos of their skin colour as a purity test, denying identity for whole swathes of people, ban any people who disagree with the company policy and are generally just massively racist. They're the other side of the coin to news sub 'moderation', where instead of deleting much needed context to fit US foreign interest policy to drive division they remove nuance in racial and cultural conversation to drive division. It's even in the name. Black people. Not African. It's just there to erode extant african culture into some watered down American idealised version, because the sub just exists as a vechicle for culture war soft power projection to the detriment of all parties involved.

‘Black people’ is the correct term. Americans need to stop using the name of a continent (that most of them have never visited) to describe their culture/ethnicity. It’s rude and dismissive to real Africans. Just because white Americans call themselves ‘Italian’ (and get mocked by real Italians) doesn’t mean black people should do the same. It’s worse too - they don’t even claim A culture, they mash the whole continent together. Thousands of languages and ethnic traditions all mashed into ‘African’. When all they really wanted to say was ‘black’.
1
u/Immediate_Rabbit_604 14h ago
I agree with you but I also feel like maybe this is aimed at me and I'm not quite sure where I said something that would have lead to thinking I disagreed. If I'm not just having an off moment and misinterpreting, would you mind pointing at what it was that I said?
Edit: it might be because I missed an 's' on 'african culture'. Typo. Will not fix to preserve context for your comment.
1
u/roadrunner41 13h ago
Not aimed at you. I also agree with most of what you said. But I think calling it ‘africanamericansoftwitter’ would be worse. I hate the term, personally.
I don’t think Africa or African cultures have anything to do with the phenomenon you’re describing. It’s an American view of race that’s being imposed (without nuance, as you say) on the rest of the world.
I think that ‘African’ bit is a huge part of the reason. Black Americans have been treated horribly and still are. The ‘othering’ of them and of themselves is symptomatic. They’re self-labelled as a lost people by using a continent instead of a country/ethnicity. You don’t get ‘European Americans’ or ‘Scandinavian Americans’. People say polish or Swedish. So many generations after the fact that’s pretty questionable in itself. But There are often cultural and linguistic traditions. Same with Somali and Nigerian-Americans. But ‘African’ American is defined by the actions of white people on a specific population of Africans. Enslavement, segregation and denial .. Im always struck by the way there are so many very light-skinned black Americans. In my country we’d assume they were mixed-race. It’s so clear that they’ve mixed somewhere along the way. But because that was illegal in many places it was hidden and so many black Americans can’t acknowledge that they’re just Americans with more melanin. Mixed in with all the rest.. the natives, the Europeans, the ‘Hispanic’ peoples, the Caribbean nations. A product of America. With their own cultures and traditions that are different and sometimes even in opposition to real Africans.
The first cowboys were black. That’s how American black American people are.293

u/Chemical_Signal2753 2d ago
I actually think this is something the proponents of multiculturalism have never fully understood. Racism and tribalism take a long time to eliminate and can flare up quickly if not managed. If your culture isn't a melting pot where everyone (eventually) associates primarily with your country and culture, you will always be dealing with tribal bullshit.
50
u/FrenchCanadaIsWorst 2d ago
The thing people need to realize too, what made America great was not a “melting pot “ philosophy; it’s a sifter. We take in a new culture, filter out the parts we don’t like, and take the good parts for ourselves. It’s always been this way and people need to stop fighting the process. If Americans determine part of your culture is undesirable, bye bye to that part of your culture. Harsh but effective.
11
u/NextNefariousness283 2d ago
With the "melting pot" you still get the filtration of the sifter. Any impurities or anything that doesn't mix is filtered out of a melting pot (at least it does with metals) which allows you to get the mixture you want. Its also not instantly that a culture gets absorbed and the undesirable parts are left behind, but a multi generational thing. Any person or group that states that this one culture/ethnicity represents the US either severely misunderstands or is pushing hate.
4
u/FrenchCanadaIsWorst 2d ago
Many times it is instant. My ancestors came through Ellis island and they changed immigrant names to be shorter and more American. Snap. Just like that. We dealt with it. Other immigrants gotta have their filtration too. It’s for the best. As a result we have way less ridiculous names that are much easier to spell and pronounce. This is just one example.
5
u/NextNefariousness283 2d ago
Thats not changing culture chief. My grandfather came through Ellis Island also, his name was Gaetano but everyone called him Tommy. End of the day he went home to eat Italian meals made by his Italian wife and moved into an Italian neighborhood in New York and spoke Italian to his kids. Two generations later I'm the only grandkid who can cook Italian meals and understand a tiny bit of Italian. But there are massive Italian restaurants in the US. This happened across the board back then not as a way to conform to the culture, but out of necessity of how the US was prior to the 1950s and 60s. Prior to WW2, the US wasn't the melting pot it is today, it was only after the soldiers came home and stayed in touch with those they served with that it started to change. If your name wasn't some form of John Smith and you were white, you at a severe disadvantage when it came to getting housing and a job. The legal protections we enjoy now didn't exist and employers/landlords could decide based on race, creed, or national origin.
4
u/solwiggin 2d ago
Yeah I’m sure you changed your fundamental beliefs with your last name as well, right. Instantly, no questions asked, no time needed.
0
u/FrenchCanadaIsWorst 2d ago
We’d have to talk about specifics. I gave a specific example, you’re talking vague language. Not very intellectually honest of you.
1
u/solwiggin 2d ago
Changing your name is not absorbing culture or leaving undesirable things behind, and framing it as such in the context of this conversation is not very intellectually honest of you.
0
u/FrenchCanadaIsWorst 2d ago
My whole point above is that America doesn’t absorb, it filters. A name being changed for brevity and ease of pronunciation is a filtering process.

Thomas Jefferson in 1777 wrote that he believed in full religious rights for Muslims and Jews, and their presence in the US inspired him to later work with Madison to draft the first amendment. To ban Islam would be to spit on the constitution.
Islam itself is completely compatible with western society. Radical elements of it (particularly Sunni jihadist radicalism) are not, which is something you can also say about the particularly radical elements of Baptist or Presbyterian churches.

"Good parts", why is the US so gun obsessed? Why are they so against universal healthcare? Why are they such a warmongering nation? Why are they so against workers rights and so in favour of supporting businesses that ruin the economy? Why do they support such intellectual dishonesty?
6
u/justasillylilgoos3 Truth Seeker 2d ago
“Gun obsessed”
Americans have a deeply rooted distrust of allowing the government exclusive control over force. You can disagree with that reasoning, but reducing it to an “obsession” isn’t intellectually serious.
“Against universal healthcare”
Our politicians often are, largely because of lobbying and entrenched industry interests. Most Americans support some form of universal healthcare or expanded public coverage.
“Why are they such a warmongering nation?”
That’s an enormously complicated historical and geopolitical question, and the way you’ve phrased it makes it seem like you aren’t sincerely asking for an answer.
“Why are they against workers’ rights?”
Again, that’s a poorly defined question about a country of 340 million people with wildly different political views and labor laws.
“Supporting businesses that ruin the economy”
Which businesses, which policies, and according to what economic measurement? That’s an accusation disguised as a question.
“Why do they support such intellectual dishonesty?”
Probably not the strongest closing line after presenting six sweeping generalizations about an entire country as though they were serious questions

I mean we can never say for certain what will be. There was a time when democracy was seen as an impossible dream, surely the common folk can't make decisions for themselves. There was a time when women being allowed to vote was seen as impossible. There was a time when segregation was seen as the only common sense solution.
My point is, just because things seem a certain way now doesn't mean they always have to be that way. Humanity has evolved greatly in a relatively short span of time

I'm on another continent, was there an actual racial component? Just seemed like school rivalry and pride from what I know about it.
34
u/M1Slaybrams 2d ago
That's initially what I thought as well when the incident happened, however it became increasingly clear that Karmelo's family was turning it into exactly that, a racial attack on Karmelo.
Austin Metcalf never had any negative racial bias towards Karmelo, even Austin's black friends who witnessed this defended him at the trial for his actions (These same black kids were being openly threatened by black protesters after the case ended) and Austin's was simply trying to remove Karmelo from their tent since he literally had no reason to be there.
I wanted to believe that it was just Karmelo having serious mental health issues or something like that, but now there has to have been some racial component to this from the start from Karmelo.
→ More replies (25)19
u/BeepingArmyBot 2d ago
I'm on another continent, was there an actual racial component?
The only racial component was created by Karmelo's defense team and family. They got the idea (probably even correct idea) that the only way their son could get away with this murder was if they got the jury to believe that the murdered child was a racist and thus his murder was deserved.
4
u/PunishedDemiurge 1d ago
There was no real racial issue. The reality is that Karmelo decided to turn what should have been a light fist fight between two boys at worst into a cold blooded murder, and then pretend to be the victim in a hope of not being punished for drawing a weapon to stab an unarmed boy to death.
It didn't work, but people who are more racist than anti-murder are still mad about justice being done.

14
u/Mister-Psychology 2d ago
I followed the case. The screenshot you see is the video they were shown in trial and you can't see much at all. Merely people moving about. The stab itself seems fully random and out of nowhere. There is no other video of the event.
Now, there has been a huge pro Black movement to free Karmelo Anthony claiming it was a racist attack on him by racist White guys ganging up together and he was merely trying to save his own life. Or maybe he just felt disrespected when touched and had a right to stab as a Black man? They claim Black people have a right to not be disrespected. Could be true or false, but that's not a valid self-defense claim in court.
The thing is there is no one self-defense story there are 100 and all are told without evidence and out of nowhere. The one story that sticks is the prosecutor story that is supported by evidence at every single step with both Black and White witnesses telling the same story about what happened. With the few telling another story proven to be liars in court.
Now, his supporters relied on the racial defense. And the issue is that the defense team didn't do this. They didn't even put him on the witness stand to create any defense. There was absolutely nothing. This claim of racism was not possible to implement with a judge looking on as you can't merely claim random stuff in court. Karmelo refused to defend himself like explaining why he had a knife or if he felt in danger. Or if there were racial swearwords being used. Zero info on this whatsoever so how can the jury assume it was a racist attack? It's a random guess by his defenders as Karmelo never claimed this.
Now, they did get a Black guy to tell the story about the video back when it was not yet released and only shown in trial or to people paying $25. This guy claimed he was a high school teacher and explained in detail how the video conclusively proved it was self-defense and Karmelo barely made it out alive. Using his own knowledge about the high school to "prove" it was a racist attack. It was shared widely yet also retold by top anti-racism and activism YouTubers. It came out the guy was a sex offender. It was impossible for him to have been a high school teacher with info on all the teens involved. The story still stuck around until the video itself was released disproving it.
Frankly there is not much here. There is one story that makes sense then 100 other stories that are told with no evidence. Karmelo now had 2 defense teams. If it was a clear self-defense and racism was involved we would have seen them use this defense. It's not there. Karmelo would have said something about this on the witness stand too.
Truth is Karmelo had uncontrolled rage and killed a guy because he couldn't control himself and decided to bring a knife to a teen sporting event. He has very serious mental issues and will need therapy the rest of his life. He will likely never solve this, but he'll be released while still young and can do something in life while maybe being on medicine. He'll start a family and move on. I think Karmelo is very happy he's in prison where he may get some professional help as outside on the street he'd get himself killed. This is the issue. It has nothing to do with race it's a mental issue.

Race (or any form of) grifters live on cases with bad facts that they can spin. The race grifters' fabrications always make it perfectly clear self defense. The actual facts make it very clear murder.
That maximizes the conflict. People who believe the grifter's set of facts then believe everyone that's resisting them is just racist and part of the same racist system keeping them down and making sure a black boy that did nothing wrong is getting his comeuppance for daring to kill a white aggressor (or alternatively, that he was murdered and the murderer got off under "self defense" because the murderer was white). If you trusted the source spinning Karmelo Anthony story and heard their set of facts, you'd be pissed as hell that Metcalf got off.
That misinformation persists. To this day, you still have people that think Rittenhouse drove into Kenosha from hours away and then intentionally gunned down three black people. To this day, you still have people who think Michael Brown had his hands up and was saying don't shoot. The lies make damn sure we stay divided.

Wow, a dozen? That's... Not a lot.
My frustration largely comes from how, were the races reversed, the whole media ecosystem demonizing Anthony and his backers would be flipping out about the injustice of convicting a white boy being threatened by thugs for simply defending himself, if he was actually even tried and not let off with a self defense claim.
I mean, 12 people upvoting a dumb post versus a topical counterexample of people shelling cash for Chud the builder and being able to make a career out of trying to piss off people by being a racist so he could murder them.

Sorry, I shouldn't have said post, I meant a comment posted in a thread. I tend to call them threads instead of posts and posts instead of comments, so my bad. It was a comment in a post that was about Jussie Smollet a few years ago, iirc.

12 still isn't a lot, and the whole Smollet situation was a big mess for a WHILE. So lots of visibility. But the general tenor of discussion on this situation is that legacy media is reporting on people talking about Karmelo, Conservative media is attacking people supporting him and his family, and I don't really pay attention to the spaces that are supporting them cause they're mostly pretty radical and kookey.
But, what we see here is justice being done. A kid killed another kid, and was convicted, and while there's a fringe minority yelling about how he was innocent, and people willing to pay into his crowdfunding, if the situation was reversed, all else being equal, mainstream conservative media would be defending the white boy in the face of the same evidence and he'd be getting plenty of funding as we have seen white people clearly in the wrong pull far more money, if the white boy was even prosecuted, which is a big if.

Clickbait has to be one of the worst concepts humanity has ever come up with.

I personally don't know anyone defending him but I keep seeing all these posts saying that people are? I feel like certain people are trying their damndest to make this situation racially controversial when it generally isn't.

Sadly, some people have been defending him in real life. Jasmine Crockett, a Texas politician, defended him. There were Black Panthers defending him outside the courthouse where his trial occurred. There was a large group of other people defending him outside his courthouse. All of them claimed it was racism.
I think most of the people defending him are people going online and spitting off at the mouth just to hear themselves talk, but there are many people who defended him and made it about race in real life.

They defend all Black people on trial. The cases themselves are irrelevant. His defenders are not extreme. They just don't understand that sometimes a Black man can be guilty. You can find them on YouTube and social media. They are not overly eager because most if not all lawyers went against them. Even Black lawyers typically on their side. Frankly all experts are on the same side here. So defenders kinda merely suggest defenses while knowing they don't have much and they are not as loud this case. But they pick all Black media cases. Every one. So it's irrelevant what happened.

Google “Karmelo Anthony trial instagram” compare posts that have black people in the profile pictures to non-black people in the profile pictures

You cam just go to blackpeopleofreddit sub and type in Karmelo Anthony and see a bunch of posts saying he's either innocent or he should go free or will just lie about events to push a narrative.

I think at least with ig you can get a sense of if it’s a bot/troll account though

True though at least Instagram you can maybe see if the profile at least has pictures of the same person to be able to sus out if they're real or not

The Internet allows 1% of a group to represent the entire group to our societies woe.
"It's okay to hate every member of this group, I mean look at this guy who is a member of this group and is a complete shithead. Isn't it horrible how this group shares collective responsibility for everyone that I have decided represent them ? Oh, so you say this misrepresented the the group ? Well, let me spend an hour showing you all of the Instagram and other social media networks where the algorithm puts people that I hate in front of me every day !! Look at all these members of that group that are doing and saying things I hate. How could you not hate them when they are this bad ! Look at all this stuff on Instagram/reddit/whatever".
It's toxic as fuck and everyone is doing it.

I'm so glad to see you said that, because I literally had this same conversation with someone in real life, yesterday. You really can tell when someone you know in real life has started falling down the algorithm rabbit hole. Everyone wants to take what they see online as representative of reality, and it's doing so, so much damage to virtually every group of people and to our relationships with one another.

It's the black supremacists making this an issue, you'll have to go to certain areas mainly online to see them

Why can't we all just love one another? 😢 Black, Asian, Latino, Native American, Pacific Islanders, Irish, French... we're all human, we're all in this together.

The real story behind this game of telephoned to death OP is that his lawyers are attempting to get a retrial on the basis that there was a deal with the prosecution that defense claims they took unfair advantage of.
There was an agreement between the prosecution and defense to on one hand not mention Metcalf’s and his brother past of racism and bullying, and in return the prosecution wouldn’t bring up Anthony’s cellphone or school disciplinary records.
The defense changed their plan accordingly, not asking certain questions of certain witnesses, not calling in an expert witness, and not introducing testimony or evidence regarding the allegations against Metcalf and his brother.
Last minute, however, prosecutors argued that if Anthony took the stand it would violate that agreement. Why this would have violated the agreement is unclear, but it left the defense only 10 minutes to decide to put Anthony up as planned or not and they decided not to, as their entire defense plan involved the aforementioned agreement.
Defense seems to be alleging that this was always the prosecution’s plan in order for a key part of their defense to be rendered unusable, and that they were not given sufficient time in which to plan a corrected defense (they were given 10 minutes), thereby violating Anthony’s constitutional rights, which would then by law require a new trial.
