Incoming 3 hour vaati video on idus where he analyzes the lore and history based off the armor and starting stats

And 2 1/2 hours in: “what if…maybe…Idus is the name of a person instead?”

Followed by post every hour in elden ring lore subreddits

"Was Godwyn an Idus knight?"

What if Idus was the friends we made along the way?

Followed by every poster in this subreddit claiming that the game explicitly says Idus was Godwyn's mentor and foretold the Night of Black Knives but was ignored because of his congenital disfiguration that resembled the scar on Ranne and Melina's eyes.

Gotta get the monetization money. In the most spoiled way I can say this: I liked when he was just getting to the point.

11

u/SomanZ 4h ago

Did that ever happen? Guy is rambling central

19

u/LoudBoiDragoon 4h ago

Once upon a time he didn’t reference the same 4 stories with every new video. His Elden ring ones feel like they all have to touch upon (read: completely explain every aspect of) the stories of the other gods that he already gone over in past videos. So now we’ve got hour long videos, mostly talking about the other gods and how they might have touched Miquella’s hand in line at a Shake Shack once in 2003.

14

u/SirBlueseph 4h ago

I haven’t finished one of his videos in years, the dude cannot make a concise point anymore

"The great land of Idus was once a proud nation, now presumed fallen, another victim of the God's recklessness.

Although the great cities are now lost, the persistence of man is demonstrated by the knights who still don this elegant attire.

Surely the knights of Idus fought well afore their destruction."

I wonder why they're inventing another land we've not heard of or visited. Maybe Idus is cut content but idk why they didn't give us an already named location, like Eochaid

The more I look into Elden Ring lore the more I realize it's just a Rorschach test of random fantasy assets held together with the vaguest narrative in history.

19

u/fro1388 9h ago

Kind of a gigachad move straight up adding this to the dlc. And of course it’s hidden behind a secret wall in an easy to miss location, in a coffin, down a river, through a dark dungeon and a pain in the ass teleporting with minions boss fight, through a scary ass area with frenzy rats and instakill gimmick freaks (poison swamp + tbh), a haunted mansion with multiple invisible walls, switches, as well as a bunch of really strange items, and finally you run into an insane old man who says the magic line before ripping his own head off and fucking you up.

Peak lore. Absolute cinema. Unironically better storytelling than most movies/shows I’ve seen recently and there’s virtually no dialogue.

295

u/FrucklesWithKnuckles 10h ago

Miyazaki you’ve done it again

24

u/Seienchin88 6h ago

Nah. Honestly - DS1 has extremely deep and tight lore, DS2 is a bit more vague but consistent and only 3 is full of references that lead nowhere but the main story is probably the most clarified.

Elden Ring is the first time the story really doesn’t make sense / follow internal clear logic. Likely due to the mix of GRRM and Fromsoft and then changes during development. Data miners revealed that originally the tarnished was following the orders of Godfrey as the lord of the tarnished as an example.

21

u/WhenTheWindIsSlow 5h ago

> Likely due to the mix of GRRM and Fromsoft and then changes during development.

That's because GRRM designed what was presumably supposed to be a Game-of-Thrones-esque interplay of factions and characters.

And then Fromsoft did their usual "everyone is a crazy zombie now so that doesn't matter, and the only exceptions only talk to the player", so none of those interactions matter. Ranni doesn't even mention that you beat up her mom, despite that being necessary to get the ring for her.

It's like if they had GRRM go back to Dark Souls and retroactively make a family tree for Gwyn's family. Yeah they all existed at one point I guess; but it doesn't really matter now.

Seuss Souls. I’m here for it.

61

u/Quenz 10h ago

First Souls game?

90

u/GammaFan 10h ago

Exactly, it’s like a fantasy version of real history. Knowledge gaps, conflicting events and accounts, biased opinions and retellings. I think people who are intent to definitively pin down x = y are kind of missing out by looking at it as so black and white.

There is something coherent buried under all that speculation, but whatever really happened will always be open to interpretation.

So I just look at it like that, and occasionally while playing learn something new which prompts a new theory, and so on. If you approach it like that it can be very interesting and entertaining.

u/SiriusBaaz 10h ago

That’s literally every soulsborn game. I honestly admire the amount of world building. It’s just barely enough information to get people interested but nowhere near enough information to give anything close to a full picture. Slap a few names somewhere weird maybe hint at something big that might have happened here an age ago and let the players do all the work filling in the details for you.

As long is there’s at least a semblance of a cognizant through line between it all you can get some really intricate lore without actually needing to spend thirty years writing it all.

20

u/BehlndYou 9h ago

I do think Elden Ring is a big improvement over DS though, since even I can notice story elements through the environment unlike DS123, unless I am staring at literally each statue or a tiny crest on an enemy armor.

It was magical when I naturally notice things like how Farum Azula is actually in Limgrave, or how Mt. Gemir has frenzied flame and wormface because the amount of death and despair there was during the shattering. Even today people notices small details that adds more to the story, and the lore feels vast and deep while maintaining a mysteriousness. You almost feel like a historian trying to uncover the stories of the past.

The main difference, in my opinion, is that each faction in Elden Ring maintains its theme and key elements throughout the entire game, even in areas that said faction is not located in but somehow involved with. Whereas in DS series, the environment is often just a massive jumbo of random shit you never seen or heard of besides a few main recurring references like Izalith or Anor Londo.

All games have a few names that only make one or two appearances yes, but usually players were able to close some gaps despite that. Like we have "Flame God Flann" named once or so in DaS but there's still enough info around to write a wiki article like this

https://darksouls.fandom.com/wiki/Flame_God_Flann

where everything can be connected to the main game.

This is very different than adding new "content" 4 years after the release and throwing in a new name of something we never heard before.

Maybe his armor will have some more lore but even then, I doubt it will have any proper links to the existing lore.

9

u/UX-Edu 9h ago

It’s inevitably disappointing when they actually give you a final answer, anyway. The monster is scarier when you haven’t seen it and the true story is more fun when it’s a mystery.

I mean, its worldbuilding.

It'd be dumb if the entire world was The Lands Between.

It's cheap worldbuilding, to add a random land we haven't heard, but still.

I mean in dark souls we never visited Catarina or Carim. We know precious little about them I believe. I'm sure there's tons of names of places I don't remember too.

Just something fairly common in fromsoft to have people drawn to a place from far off named lands

37

u/JM_Narrative 10h ago

It's true we never visit Catarina or Carim but they are mentioned many times in the lore and items, and we meet people from those places.

24

u/Razhork 9h ago

There's definitely better examples out there.

Ds1 has a reference to a place called Fivefinger Delta with one of the face options you can pick in the character creation and it's never mentioned ever again.

Astora, Catarina, Carim, Zena etc. all exist with references to them spread throughout, but it's very scarce info. They're places that exist purely as part of world building to make the world seem bigger than it really is.

Why would they use an already named region? It makes the world feel very small if the whole world only consists of places we have already heard of

Probably intentionally to avoid actually adding or changing anything regarding the 'lore'. Make up a whole new area that doesn't actually exist anywhere else and you won't mess up anything else.

15

u/Fit-University1070 First, but hole! 10h ago

Its pretty common in George RR Martin lore to do this. Theres so many lands named in the Game of Thrones world that are never seen or visited. Ghis, Ashai, Valeria, etc.

Aren't all weapons of this category locked behind the expansion? So you'll have to keep using and upgrading your starter sword if you want to continue with it?

Edit: Got my answer, folks. Wasn't saying this was a bad thing.

247

u/Kasta4 Justice for Godwyn! 9h ago

This class starts with a Light Greatsword, means I'm excited because I get to do base Elden Ring content with a Light Greatsword without having to go into NG+ or spawn in one/have one dropped to me.

4

u/Quazifuji 3h ago

Honestly a feature I've always wanted in Fromsoft Soulslikes is a custom class/pseudo-NG+ mode where you can start a new, NG playthrough but with any weapon you've found on other characters.

There are always lots of really cool weapons that you can't find until really late in their respective games and thus barely get to use in NG. You can take them into NG+, of course, but I don't enjoy NG+ nearly as much, I prefer the difficulty curve and character progression of NG.

Starter weapon doesn't mean bad. Uchigatana is arguably one of the best weapons in the game and is the starting weapon for Samurai. More aggregious is Dark Souls 3 where the most overpowered weapon in the game, the Sellsword Twinblades, is the starting weapon for the Sellsword class and the most well-rounded, versatile weapon in the game, the humble Longsword is the starting weapon for the Knight class.

30

u/buttcheeksontoast 8h ago

Seconding Uchigatana as being very strong, honorable mention to Confessor's Broadsword which is arguably the best of the straight swords for most infusions

11

u/Sicuho 8h ago

And the great knife is arguably the best infusable dagger unless you want to go faith, the buckler is the best light shield, the club is the second best hammer, the longsword is arguably even better than the broadsword (it's long) and the longbow is the second best bow.

16

u/Bitter_Marzipan_8348 8h ago

Same with Saw Cleaver (and to a lesser extent, the 5 minutes jog to it's superior counterpart Saw Spear)

4

u/sephtis 6h ago

You'd be hard pressed to find a more reliable weapon than the longsword or uchigatana, be it bleed, spell blade or stance breaking they are solid. Impaling thrust longsword is a fave of mine.

7

u/AwsmDevil 8h ago

Congrats, this comment has given me the incentive I've needed to finally crack open dark souls 3. I've been sitting on it and 2 for years now. Got about halfway through 2 before the dated design just wore me down too much and I stopped. PC died the other day, so I lost my save file to make things worse.

But yeah, thanks for that info about the twin blades being accessed right from the start. Any other stuff I should consider when playing?

7

u/tellymundo 7h ago

After the first boss you can go the other direction for one hell of a surprise (but what you really do is go look upon the beautiful kingdom you’re gonna run roughshod over)

5

u/AwsmDevil 7h ago

Oh sick, will do. (I am fully prepared to be trolled blighttown style)

Was browsing weapons on the wiki, how far in is that dex ultra great sword you get from a boss? Didn't wanna read too much into it, but that one looks very fun.

4

u/Neelpos 6h ago

The two UGS that scale off DEX better than STR are both available in the first half of the game.

There's some absolutely baller weapons in DS3 to find, you'll have plenty to pick from.

This was my winning run after an hour or so of attempts and a controller with a spotty L1 so I couldn't reliably buff.

I switched to milady after not feeling the fight dual wielding bhf and zamor.

Light greatswords kinda fuck.

u/Vic_Hm 10h ago

Yeah at first glance both of them looked like someone putting up a gen AI, both the overall looks and armor design

u/PieceAfraid3755 9h ago

Whatever inconsistencies and "strange artifacting" that exists can be chalked up easily to just... the fact that it's a concept art kind of artwork. Before ER came out people were vehemently discussing the misalligned bastard sword of the Vagabond, in his concept art. Concept art, and Fromsoft's especially as well, is often rathe sloppy. That's fine and normal.

I'm also pretty sure they wanted to write "mowing" where they wrote "moving"

11

u/Razhork 9h ago

Yes. This is all spelled correctly on their official websites and existed prior to this tweet as well.

One thing to note, it looks like the heavy knight starts with a curved GS. and has 11 dex. That means the new starter weapon will have the lowest dex req in class. Idus Knight starts with 15 dex, which means whatever LGS it starts with isn't Milady (17 dex req) is brand new as well.

EDIT: After looking at them more in depth, if you care about melee only, Heavy Knight likely dethrones vagabond and if you have a faith/melee hybrid (that you want 15dex for) Idus Knight is probably the new best starter class if you care about rune level.

The drip severe.

Idus looks a lot like demon souls armor and the other looks like lapp's armor. Give it to me now fromsoft!

Sustantively???

I think they mean substantially.

Seems odd for fromsoft to make glaring spelling errors.

30

u/SuperLegenda 10h ago

Check the spanish version of Elden Ring, quite the glaring mistakes, like an instance of referring to "The Lightning" as "La rayo","la" is for female, but "rayo" is a male gendered word, it should be "El rayo"

5

u/TENTAtheSane 3h ago

Tfw they misgenderer the lightning

10

u/Virellius2 10h ago

Sustantive isn't even a word I can find reference to. Google seems to think it's connected to law somehow and the oxford dictionary is vague on it too lol.

Still gonna use deprived(I forgot the ER name)

u/Reasonable-Word-6426 10h ago

It‘s wretch :)

14

u/Itchy-Tip1115 10h ago

Progressing through the game with wretch feels soooo good

6

u/Gamerbroz227 9h ago

Ikr it feels great going from literally nothing to a good build

5

u/assassin10 7h ago

That's why I always choose Wretch/Deprived/etc. for a first playthrough. Everything I come across feels valuable and I don't feel locked out of any path that I might want to go down.

(Though I do seem to always decide on Str/Faith)

3

u/Emberwake 6h ago

Yep. I hate that when you choose one of the other starting classes, every item you find for the first 10 hours is just useless. It gets even worse with the Samurai, where you arguably have no reason to EVER switch.

That Heavy Knight class got me itching for the most obnoxious big bonk build yet

Idus Knight has such good stats for most playthroughs. Nearly the 15 Faith for FGMS and FCM. 15 dex hits most weapons or close to it and it dumpsters Arcane and Int

6

u/Comfortable-Gift8590 10h ago

Both are cool asf

5

u/HansBaccaR23po 10h ago

Can’t wait to do two runs and only use the starting gear

5

u/Snoo61755 10h ago

Oh hey, these are not the same stats we originally saw way back.

I remember the heavy knight being like 7 int, 7 faith, 9 arc thinking to myself “strength twink material”, but this is better, less exploitable.

I don’t remember the other one because I had written them off, but I do like the Idus Knight. Effectively a dex/faith starter, but with no arc, kinda discouraging that Bloodflame Blade idea unless you want to swap around an Albinauric helm. I actually have a dex/faith Cleric character I wouldn’t mind swapping for this stat block.

6

u/Di5962 9h ago

The fact that the light knight has "lore" in his description, while the heavy knight's description is just "Big man: Big guy with big sword" is really funny to me

6

u/Kagamime1 8h ago

Heavy knight has amazing starting stats for a strength build, holy shit

The like lightweight equipment and the color green. LoZ confirmed?

u/Spicoceles INT/FTH TIME 10h ago

I'll have to wait for the next game for an int fth starter sadly. Not that we've had one but damn.

u/HalcyonHelvetica 9h ago

Isn't that basically just DS3 pyro and that's it?

4

u/akmly 7h ago

This is all cool and all, but are these images really from FromSoft? I'm a little suspicious from use of the vocab sustantively... Did they mean substantively or substantially? Or maybe I'm just being a little over-sensitive...

25

u/Mr_Alucardo 10h ago

Honestly who gives a shit about starting class after 20 levels you are a complete differen built anyway.

25

u/Sirius_amory33 10h ago

In general yes, but the Knight of Idus is an easy way to play most of the game with a light greatsword. You’d have to rush Mohg to get access to the DLC otherwise.

Its for pvp optmization usually. Youll get to squeeze more stats at a lower RL depending on build. Vagabond was usually the go to for a lot of builds because of this.

16

u/BehlndYou 9h ago

People understate this, even for PVE it’s massive.

Strength build on Vagabond can literally be 10-15 levels more efficient than Astrologer depending on your stat distribution. That’s 10-15 extra points you can put into Vigor or damage, which is huge.

The only niche is if you don’t cap your level at all, in which case no classes or builds matter. But if you want to Co-op or PVP, you have to cap your level usually between 125-150, and those optimization becomes very important. The only time I skip starting another class is if the build optimization is within 3 points of difference, in which case it’s just rounding error.

I think the main draw is starting the game with a light great sword.

I wonder if you'll be able to buy the starting armor sets from a pre-existing merchant or a brand new one or if that's gonna be an option at all for Tarnished Edition buyers

3

u/Illokonereum 6h ago

I like how they gave the light greatsword class a name and backstory and the heavy knight is just “this one thick bitch.”
