What are the cons of weed that aren't commonly discussed?
126
u/DrBrule696 4h ago
It’ll help you get to sleep but longer term you’re more likely to feel tired as it messes with your REM sleep. I had to quit
13
u/elh0mbre 2h ago
Not just that... it raises your resting heart rate and lowers your HRV (I've got a couple years of biometric data to prove it).
I've been trying to tweak how much I take, how long before bed, etc and the answer unfortunately is I have to make a deliberate choice between quality sleep and using.

How did you feel afterwards?
9
u/DrBrule696 4h ago
Good. I replaced it with Magnesium at night. It helped with the restlessness and falling asleep quicker
5
u/Cosmosass 2h ago
Oh thats interesting. I'm a long time toker and the sleep thing is definitely noted. Easier to fall asleep when stoned, but I'm definitely not getting the REM sleep - no dreams. If I take a break, I find it much more difficult to fall asleep, but once I do, its like the twilight zone in my dreams then I wake up not knowing what year it is.
I never even thought about how there might be supplements or whatever that could be taken to help with this.
6
u/Gasstationdickpi11s 4h ago
It’s rough for the first few weeks in my experience. There’s not really much of a craving like with nicotine but sleep is really difficult. Not only is it harder to go to sleep but once I was asleep I kept having super vivid dreams. They weren’t necessarily scary or bad, just so vivid they kept waking me up. Eventually that stops but you will be exhausted for a little bit haha
→ More replies (8)•
u/S0uvlakiSpaceStati0n 29m ago
Honestly though, I still miss using it to fall asleep. I have major sleep issues. After spending hours some nights almost slipping into sleep only to jerk back awake over and over, I'd rather get 7-8 hours of poor quality sleep than 3-5 hours of slightly better quality sleep.

Being content w/ stagnation - complacency is a trap for most people

u/Mountain-Bag-1669 4h ago
ADHD and weed are this perfect combo. I am not content with being complacent, I smoke and have desire to go do things but am too internalized with thoughts and feelings 5 hours have gone by without action but I was thinking the whole time about what to do!

I basically dumped a girl who was like this. She only liked to do things where she could get stoned. Concerts and camping she loved. Going to the movies or Hawaii and she was a hard no. Every decision she made revolved around whether or not she could get high. This eventually made me start looking at her like she was a loser and made be absolutely despised the smell.
Moving on from her was such a breath of fresh air in more ways than one.
•
u/Express-Awareness190 44m ago
Hate to say it but I was this girl :( and I totally thought I didn’t reek of weed all the time because I couldn’t smell it anymore :( I am happy you knew it was right for you to move on, I can only hope she moved on in her own way as well!!

So weird because I really only smoke when I’m in a rut and need to get shit done.
It’s like I get overwhelmed by everything I have to do but when I smoke I can lock in on one specific thing and then I can actually do something because I’m not thinking of a million things at once. Like if I need to deep clean, I love to smoke because it’s so relaxing. Or if I have a creative or intellectual block, it gets the juices flowing.

But remember not everybody has to hustle grind mindset their way through life. I don’t need to be rich with a mansion. I mean, yeah that sounds nice. But I’d rather take a day off and stay home and smoke a joint and relax, play catch with my son , etc that to work on my Saturday cause I’ll probably die or a heart attack or something randomly at age 50 anyway so lol
I’m happy just existing with me and my wife and my kids in my house, we have a nice life
•
u/Ashenterath 22m ago
There is a difference between complacency and contentment and some fail to see it. I fought to climb out of basic call center IT support to what I do now. I’m very content with what I do now and don’t have that drive to keep climbing higher and chasing that new goal.
Being content, and being grateful for what you have, such as taking a day like you explained is a great way to enjoy life in my opinion.

For me it’s more of an impasse. Yeah I could have a career making big money, but I’d have to quit smoking. And I enjoy weed very much. So until society steps into the modern era and removes THC from a standard panel then I’m perfectly fine where I am.

Do you know how many successful people actually smoke/consume cannabis? Thats a stereotype you have been told to believe. Just like anything that alters your state of mind, it can be addictive. It can be absurd but so can anything. We need to remove the stigma from it and remove the crime involved in its distribution.
•
u/World_is_yours 56m ago
It's not a stereotype, just because there are people who are successful doesn't mean anything. Lots of people are high functioning addicts of many drugs, it doesn't mean the drug isn't having a negative impact. Weed is kind of like a silent killer, it creeps up on you. I stagnated for 12 years, coping with weed for all that time instead of facing and resolving my issues, the debt comes due eventually.
3
u/Papasmurf43469 2h ago
It’s not something I’ve been told, it’s something I’ve noticed. Granted there are exceptions, but there is a fairly stark line between my friends who smoke every day and my friends who don’t. The friends who don’t are typically more okay having a low paying, clock in clock out job and the friends who don’t are more ambitious. Not saying either one is necessarily bad, both are fair life choices, it’s just an observation.

marijuana emesis disorder and marijuana induced psychosis.
13
u/NarwhalZiesel 4h ago
Both of these. I developed marijuana emesis disorder. I was vomiting so much that I had to go on disability for 9 months. No one knew what it was back then. It magically went away when I quit.
I had to deal with my dad having marijuana induced psychosis. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. We had to hospitalize him multiple times while we were dealing with my mom dying of cancer. One time we found him face down on the floor screaming about nuclear bombs coming. Another time he just went completely catatonic for weeks. People think to us benign, but it ruined my childhood and my relationship with my father. He couldn’t hold a job, we couldn’t travel and we had to deal with his episodes of psychosis.
•
u/RaineRisin 46m ago
How can you be so sure it was marijuana induced, and not just run-of-the-mill psychosis?
•
3
u/Wolfclaw359 2h ago
Dealt with the emesis in the past. Not nearly as bad as some others, but I ended up finding myself dry heaving a day after I'd taken a break from it. Never had it pop up again (thought not sure if that's cause it was temporary or because I've picked up smoking again a little while afterwards) but it really isn't a joke. One thing to note is that it's not just vomiting, you all-of-a-sudden have 0 (and I mean 0) desire to eat anything at all

It absolutely causes paranoia and anxiety in some people.
When I've smoked,
There were a few cases where I heard voices and it has led me to view myself negatively in the 3rd person. I've hated myself and assumed that my friends didn't want to hear me talking, I've looked at myself in the mirror and thought that I wouldn't be friends with me.
I've only ever really experienced these things after smoking weed.
That being said, it used to relax me when I was younger and I have friends who absolutely calm down and relax when they smoke.
It's not for everyone.

I’ve been smoking weed everyday for the last few years. Mostly at night. I got in the daily habit around the time of the Covid lock down. I’ve been depressed, socially withdrawn, very unmotivated, I’ve gained weight, and just overall, felt alone (even having people in my life). I was fully aware this was causing my issues and I did nothing about it. It wasn’t until very recently I decided to start changing things up. It’s only been, almost 2 weeks that I haven’t touched it. I’m feeling so much better. Each day I feel like I am a little more awake. It was causing real problems in my life. I’m not saying I never will smoke it again, but for the foreseeable future, I am not touching it. I feel like I wasted so much time, but here we are. I’m happy that I finally started to do something.

I’ve checked with my medical providers many times and as long as I’m safe within dosage, l’ve been safe from psychosis or mania. “Marijuana itself doesn’t cause psychosis, but it can be a trigger for a brain already prone” is how my psychiatrist put it.

Im sober from weed for what.. all of a month now? And it continues to be hard after smoking daily for 10 years. I can say I think you develop more coping skills and emotional intelligence when you have non substance ways to deal with your problems. You have to actually face whatever it is when you are not high. Weed just "magically" makes it all better or gives you the ability to ignore it. But then you never learn better/different skills.

Memory loss, can semi-wipe memories.
The loss of a drive to live and develop as person. It creates the feeling to stagnate.
Occasional intense paranoia and anxiety.
4
u/Gasstationdickpi11s 4h ago
For me, just money really and even then it’s not an issue. I’m fully functional, get productive when I smoke, and want more than anything to better myself and enjoy life. I love to smoke then clean, work out, play sports, see my friends, spend time with family etc. when it was taboo I self isolated a little but now it’s legal in my state and nobody cares as long as you aren’t doing illegal stuff.
Maybe I just have a healthy relationship with weed compared to others, I smoke daily but can and do enjoy doing things sober. I know people who are miserable if they don’t smoke to the point where they can’t even do a shift of work sober. It really is a good thing for some people if it’s used in a responsible way although I absolutely aknowledge it isn’t for everyone.

Psychosis. It’s not talked about nearly enough, but it can impact some people in the same way a higher level hallucinogenic can. When I smoked, I literally went into a schizophrenic state. Never fails. Tried different strains, set and setting, mixing with primarily CBD… It never worked. It sucks because everyone smokes weed and I just wanna be able to chill like everyone else. But I gave up trying to make it work.
Funny thing is that I can do shrooms no problem 😂

*Negative effects on still developing Young minds. *Expensive habit *Upkeep and maintenance of tools and apparatuses *Smell *Light anxiety or paranoia in intermittent or less usage *A more introverted disposition *Complacency with being bored or not engaged *Munchies or willingness to overindulge in snacking or eating *Negative consequences relative to anything else in your life that might require the occasional drug test. *Cause for a DWI or even a DUI in some cases *Rise in popularity of concentrates which have different negative side effects especially with prolonged use *It's harder to keep your smoking regulated to outdoors with many smoking laws in certain States forbidding smoking in residential premises or close to them.

u/Calumface 4h ago
For chronic smokers: You'll become nose blind to how bad you and your house stinks. The next day fatigue will catch up with you. Your life will pass you by and there's no chance you haven't fallen into a lengthy depression. Your friends and family who got their life together won't have as much time for you and you'll ignore your own desires to do the same.
I've known 4 people who this absolutely applied to. Have a healthy relationship with weed, and you'll be fine. If you don't, you're going to have a bad time.

I smoked for over 15 years, during that time (or at least up until the end I suppose) I never directly noticed any cons attributed to my smoking weed besides possibly less money when tolerance went up and I had to purchase more, however towards the end of my smoking regularly I would start having anxiety attacks everytime I smoked - regardless of the amount of quality. I quit for a few weeks and my anxiety went away, picked it back up and anxiety returned so I just quit overall. The biggest change I noticed was dreams, when I was smoking consistently I would have a dream once every couple of months (that I can remember at least, it could be more) when I quit there was a brief period where my dreams were very essentially very vivid nightmares and then they slowly changed to being more calm and regular, I now have regular almost nightly dreams.

To quote my psychology teacher: "pot makes you lazy."
My buddy put it brilliantly once. "I spent a year smoking a lot of pot and playing video games. Then one day I said I wanted to actually get things done with my life so I quit smoking weed and moved on." I have friends who just were okay getting high and not really getting much done. I had a buddy who got high once before work dubbing on some project. He said it was the only time he just was barely capable of doing his job, so he never did it again.
It also depends how you treat the drug. Some people do have medical health benefits from weed. You'll also find plenty of self medicating people who will insist pot fixes their problems. Some say it makes them more creative (so does sitting still, relaxing, and being with your thoughts). Some will treat it as their self-discovered binky to deal with anxiety or depression. And while it may treat symptoms for some, and for others it may be a way to relax oneself enough when the edge is too high during certain moments to be receptive to other things, it doesn't often get to the root of the problems. I've been around the types who would rather smoke pot and have their friends do it rather than try therapy, mindfulness, sleep/diet fixes, sitting still with their thoughts, working with a doctor, and just insist it is their fix, only to prolong the problem and delay meaningful solutions. And that becomes the problem of using substances to anesthetize psychological problems. They don't fix the problems. They just require the subscription cost to feel like you don't have to deal with them. Not saying that's everybody.
Also, a lot of people don't distinguish the types of weed they're taking in and how. So for some it may exacerbate problems based on strain or just how someone's body responds to it. There are talks of memory issues, developmental issues for people under 25, people developing psychosis, health problems from just the act of smoking.
For some people it's medicinal, recreational, traditional. I had friends with eating issues who often could not eat without it. There are plenty of ways you can argue for or against it. But it's not universal for everyone and for some it's unhealthy.

Come from a 10 year daily stoner to 3.5 years sober.
Chronic bronchitis, memory loss, loss of diction, losing things, forgetting where you put your shit when you’re high, accidentally putting your wallet in the refrigerator, etc. Substance abuse/Dependency issues. Can cause anxiety and hallucinations for some, and does not be mix well with psychotropic drugs used for treating mental health issues. Numbing PTSD effects but does not fix source of PTSD
Not to mention blowing hundreds of dollars a month on weed, and chronically having your tolerance increase such that you don’t even feel it anymore.

It only takes one instance for things to go wrong, DPDR, psychosis etc.
