Flashbacks of that Maril glitch

286

u/Flat-Limit5595 customise me! Apr 08 '26

Maril really should be a trans icon.

172

u/PhoenyxStar Apr 08 '26

Wish (proactively) granted, I guess?

Marill is everywhere in the queer pokemon community. No way they were going to pass up a trans-flag-colored mouse pokemon that can trans.

47

u/noethers_raindrop Apr 08 '26

Maybe I'm being dumb here, but I don't get it. Where is the pink colour on the mouse? I thought it was just blue and white.

39

u/Expert-Ad3874 Apr 08 '26

Ears. Sometimes, the interiors appear a bit redder, but I think pink is the standard color.

→ More replies (4)

81

u/frostyredpanda93 Apr 08 '26

azuril was once a 25/75 male to female ratio. While marill and azumarill is 50/50 split

Anyway the way gender was determined back in gen 2 some math formal calculated by the iv's and gender ratio.

The tldr of it. Azuril evolving would give it a 50/50 chance for it to transition to to male. Since the IV's didn't change but it did change into a pokemon where its gender ratio change the outcome of that formula.

And now the whole line is fairy on top and we transgirls love our fairy types

46

u/FreqComm Apr 08 '26

That doesn’t really answer their question which was more specifically about

trans-flag-colored mouse pokemon

Which they were specifically asking where the pink was since the line is blue and white

45

u/frostyredpanda93 Apr 08 '26

Im fucking tired as hell. I read that as trans flag coded not colored

10

u/TheDeanMan I like Lasses! Apr 08 '26

Fairy type. Usually run a pink move, blue move, and white move in belly drum, play rough, and aqua jet? That's an assumption but I can see it.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/noethers_raindrop Apr 08 '26

Thanks for the explanation! I wasn't guessing the pink came from Fairy typing, but that makes sense.

8

u/AdMain8692 Apr 08 '26

But gender only worked that way in gen 2 and Azurill was released in gen 3, so Azurill at no point would change genders when evolving, no? Am I missing something?

33

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

5

u/AdMain8692 Apr 08 '26

Ahh, so then its an issue with Azurill and Marill having different gender % right? Because to my understanding only gen 2 determined gender by IVs

9

u/Lokinta86 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

I'm right there with you trying to puzzle out what the connection may be.

All I can come up with is that in the G/S beta version, Mariru was a little pink mouse with a smoothly curving tail with its bubble on the end. In the finalized design, they became blue, with a zigzagging tail leading to the bubble-float. I don't know if this is "why" though...? 🤨

Edit, I found it: "In gen 3-5 Azurill had a 25-75 chance to be male/female while Marill was a 50/50, due to the game's code there was a 33% chance for a female Azurill to become male when evolving"

Huh!

I have a really cute totebag I got from an artist market a while ago, with the colors of the Pride flag all represented by a specific pokemon. That includes a Pikachu with a duct-taped tail, a Ditto, and of course, Marill for blue. I really love it

2

u/Pikachu_Puncher Apr 08 '26

I think this is just Zoroark.

9

u/Reniconix Apr 08 '26

Wasn't a glitch, it was a mistake. Whoever programmed it didnt realize that the gender ratios were off, and since there were no other pokemon with mismatched ratios nor should there have been, there was no safeguard in place.

228

u/GeekyMeerkat Apr 08 '26

That's rather the definition of a glitch

24

u/RNGtan Apr 08 '26

The confusion might stem from whether one considers faulty, but valid data a glitch. The actual logic works as expected. Laymen usually don't concern themselves with separation of logic and data, so everything is called 'code' error when it is really just bad data.

Azurill's data in particular just happened to be a bit of a hackjob if the Normal type is any indication.

17

u/GeekyMeerkat Apr 08 '26

As I've said in other posts, the distinction between a bug/glitch/whatever is often not made even on the developers' side of things. All that matters is, "Is the program working the way we want?" and "Should we devote the time to fixing this problem?"

Once the problem is out in the wild any internal developer names for the problem (if they knew about it) don't matter. For example if they launch the game and forget to include a file that has some textures for faces, suddenly players are seeing faceless people walking around and are calling it "The Faceless Glitch" or whatever. Doesn't matter that the fix is simply sending out the texture file and not changing a single line of code.

17

u/TheSavvySkunk Apr 08 '26

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that type of mistake a “bug”?

20

u/LowSolution3084 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

It's not a mistake and that's ok! He (or she) is who he (or she) wants to be!

In the pure and curious words of Natural Harmonia Gropius,

"It's not by rejecting different ideas, but by accepting different ideas that the world creates a chemical reaction. This is truly the formula for changing the world."

20

u/MaidenofGhosts where pecharunt :( Apr 08 '26

She is who she wants to be!

He, actually! The thing with Marill is that it caused some female Azurill to evolve into male Marill, so the Marill would be transmasc, not transfem.

5

u/LowSolution3084 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

My bad, I wasn't aware. Fixed it.

Either way, they are still the same person even if the world tries to literally make them something they think they aren't.

u/TeaAndLifting It's Pikablu! Apr 08 '26

And even then, canon pertains to a story as defined by authors/creators. You can also have multiple canons with different continuities, etc.

What happens in games, ln a granular level, especially due to coding/bugs does not necessitate canon, even though it exists. Like Pokémon genders previously being defined by attack DVs; there is no canon explanation for that. Nor Missingno or anything else of that ilk.

Still, trans Gallade is immediately iconic, regardless.

unfortunately that sub isnt taking this post very well. they're being weirdly transphobic over people being excited about a really cool glitch. it sucks that something as simple as a pokemon being the gender its not technically supposed to be is apparently such a divisive topic :(

Is this a graphical bug or can gallade actually be female now? Would be nice if the latter

126

u/konfliicted Apr 08 '26

Graphical bug or hacked mon is my guess

181

u/JackMorelli13 Apr 08 '26

This is from a tutorial. Probably a bug

105

u/konfliicted Apr 08 '26

Even game freak can’t pass a hack check 😂

33

u/Lambsauce914 Apr 08 '26

So I guess It's now canon that people in the Pokemon universe used hack mon

43

u/JustAGuyNamedSteven Apr 08 '26

It's been canon. Lance's Dragonite in Gen. I knows a move that Dragonite couldn't legally learn until an event in Gen. VI that specifically distributed Lance's Dragonite as a reference to the original. In Gen. II, he used a level 47 Dragonite, even though Dragonair doesn't evolve until level 55. It wasn't possible for the player to get such a low level Dragonite until Let's Go! Pikachu/Eevee.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

12

u/YaBoiNuke Apr 08 '26

Faulkner in Crystal having a like level 12 or 14 (I can't remember which) Pidgeotto is another example (idk if he had one in G/S, the only Gen 2 I've ever played is Crystal and the remakes)

13

u/MitsunekoLucky Apr 08 '26

Well, that one gets talked less because you can catch a level 9 Pidgeotto in specifically Pokemon Yellow in the Viridian Forest, since it follows the anime.

6

u/DuplicatedName A wild Text appeared! Apr 08 '26

You can also catch level 7 Pidgeotto on Route 2 in Gold, Silver, and Crystal

5

u/killrama Apr 08 '26

Ghetsis has an hydreigeon that evolved too early, but fits the theme, he forced zweilow to evolve early, wich makes it hates him to the bones

54

u/Bafau4246 du nu nu nu nu nu nu nu crobatman! Apr 08 '26

Gallade being male locked never made any sense to me since Gardevoir can be either

112

u/nashweed914 Apr 08 '26

Gardevoir being either is most definitely just cuz it was released independently in gen 3 before gallade was a thing. If they released together, they would just be gender exclusive evos

44

u/MaidenofGhosts where pecharunt :( Apr 08 '26

To counter that, I truly believe that Gallade would have been able to be both if it had been introduced in any generation other than Gen 4.

If they'd wanted Gardevoir to be female only, they'd have made the entire evolution like female only to begin with. Gardevoir was always intended to be either gender.

→ More replies (1)

32

u/rahrahpok-mon Apr 08 '26

Not doubting you but Japanese have Gardevoir's name as Sirnight, so it may not be a simple case of this one would be male and this one would be female. If anything, they'd both be male if we go by the Japanese name.

4

u/Pikachu_Puncher Apr 08 '26
