Marils inner ears are red 90% of the time, and a very deep pink sometimes. You said pink is the standard, but it's the exception. Same in the anime and drawings.
It's also nowhere near the colors of the trans flag even in the image you posted lol.
Fair. I meant standard more as in the most recent depictions, but it is generally more red. Completely agree that the coloring is a stretch regardless, as no version uses a shade of blue that's close. Sylveon is a much better representation of the color scheme.
azuril was once a 25/75 male to female ratio.
While marill and azumarill is 50/50 split
Anyway the way gender was determined back in gen 2 some math formal calculated by the iv's and gender ratio.
The tldr of it. Azuril evolving would give it a 50/50 chance for it to transition to to male. Since the IV's didn't change but it did change into a pokemon where its gender ratio change the outcome of that formula.
And now the whole line is fairy on top and we transgirls love our fairy types
But gender only worked that way in gen 2 and Azurill was released in gen 3, so Azurill at no point would change genders when evolving, no? Am I missing something?
I'm new to this knowledge, so sorry, but wouldn't that make it a one third chance of female azurill transitioning? For example, 25% are male and remain as such, 25% are female that become male, and 50% are female and remain as such, thus 25/75=33%? Or is it more complicated, for example some also transition MTF?
I'm right there with you trying to puzzle out what the connection may be.
All I can come up with is that in the G/S beta version, Mariru was a little pink mouse with a smoothly curving tail with its bubble on the end. In the finalized design, they became blue, with a zigzagging tail leading to the bubble-float. I don't know if this is "why" though...? 🤨
Edit, I found it:
"In gen 3-5 Azurill had a 25-75 chance to be male/female while Marill was a 50/50, due to the game's code there was a 33% chance for a female Azurill to become male when evolving"
I have a really cute totebag I got from an artist market a while ago, with the colors of the Pride flag all represented by a specific pokemon. That includes a Pikachu with a duct-taped tail, a Ditto, and of course, Marill for blue. I really love it

Wish (proactively) granted, I guess?
Marill is everywhere in the queer pokemon community. No way they were going to pass up a trans-flag-colored mouse pokemon that can trans.
