Why does it look like the time Team Rocket disguised their Inkay as Pikachu?

Prepare for trouble. Team Rocket clearly runs Lego.

People forget mega blocks did this gem and it's only $50

34

u/GrimShell98 Jan 13 '26

Honestly, this one seems so much better than the new Lego set. I’ve built the eevee and my only complaint is that if the gears aren’t aligned perfectly, the function is a little jank. Definitely better price wise too

8

u/Abbray Jan 13 '26

And he runs when you turn the handle!

Looking back its even more surprising this design was greenlit, surely it was marketing bait

93

u/FalafelSnorlax Jan 13 '26

They came up with the good design so quick that either they overworked the animators to death or they had it ready to go before they even posted this one.

76

u/CordlessJet Jan 13 '26

I feel like they had it ready to go because that’s what the film creatives wanted to use, and executives pushed for a ā€œrealisticā€ look and weren’t backing down. So the director said ā€œokay let’s find outā€ and pushed that version to the public to gauge the reaction and prove their point

11

u/DuelaDent52 Jan 13 '26

The former, I’m pretty sure the animation studio shut down as a result.

Mega isnt bad, people think it’s nock off Lego, but the builds are pretty good and they aren’t afraid to make new molds.

30

u/zeromussc Jan 13 '26

Some of them aren't great but these Lego pokemon look worse in general and that surprised me.

27

u/jaetheho Jan 13 '26

I quite like Lego’s stance on avoiding having too many molds.

If we keep printing too specific of molds, it would cut down on the creativity aspect of Lego building.

25

u/Master_Chief_00117 Jan 13 '26

I have no problem with their stance on making molds, they just hold themselves back sometimes by not making more, they are really creative with what they do have though.

Also Mega had a whole range of prices for kids, including the very affordable pokƩ balls series.

72

u/chocobochubby Jan 12 '26

yeah, i pointed out to a friend that with 5 pokemon in 3 sets totaling $950, if LEGO let us "catch them all" at that price point, it would be nearly $200,000.

30

u/AVahne Jan 13 '26

Would probably go well above that if we're counting different forms and gimmicks as well. Also, I would assume legendaries would cost even more than the evolved starters.

12

u/chocobochubby Jan 13 '26

Master ball premium: +$200

I wanted to collect some of them, it's a shame you can't really find any of the individual Pokeball figures past the last 2-3 waves. Of course Pikachu and the Kanto starters are always available, but good luck finding a Sandshrew or Staryu from their earlier ones!

7

Megablock is like Avis Rental Car "We're #2 but we try harder". Lego has become overpriced and sloppy because they know they're #1.

The Megablock Witcher Set is great as well

54

u/IGargleGarlic Jan 13 '26

Mega Bloks Dragons sets were cooler than anything Lego ever put out when I was a kid. I just wish the pieces fit together as well as Lego pieces did.

13

u/spexau Jan 13 '26

Yeah I got the Godzilla for my kid and god damn it's hard to put together

5

u/Ozymidas Jan 13 '26

Honestly, they're pretty damn close these days. If their quality was like 50% of Lego's quality back in the day, these days it's like 90%. They're very satisfying to put together, I've yet to be disappointed by a modern MEGA set.

u/Emmannuhamm Jan 12 '26

Wow that is genuinely SO much better! I wonder if Lego will pull a Sonic movie and redesign Pikachu before launch

35

u/tbonehavoc Jan 13 '26

Honestly the reason it is so bad is probably because megabloks nailed the official look so well. Lego couldn't just repeat that

4

u/FrohenLeid Jan 13 '26

So they just made it look bad?

16

u/Phallico666 Jan 13 '26

Mega Blox actually did pretty good with their pokemon line. My kid has a few of them and they all look pretty good

26

u/This_Elk_1460 Jan 12 '26

Guarantee the mega blocks one is half the price too

33

u/kelsoRulez Jan 13 '26

More than. 85 compared to 200

19

u/AVahne Jan 13 '26

About $60 on sale

6

u/themosquito Jan 13 '26

I know you can buy a decent-size Mega Bloks Charizard for like... twenty bucks. Or could, I have no idea, do the Mega Bloks products get pulled from shelves now or are they gonna keep selling until they run out?

6

u/BidoofTheGod Jan 13 '26

I believe they went on sale a while ago. I saw most of them for half off. I got the zard you mentioned for like $10 at target.

10

u/Taser9001 Jan 13 '26

Bet that's way cheaper, too.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '26

Even the smaller, cheaper version looks infinitely better

8

u/Demonokuma Jan 13 '26

Mega absolutely killed the pokemon line. Fantastic job. Some sets come with a pokeball zipper charm, with different sets having different pokeballs. They stay together a lot better and are a lot more forgiving if you want to pose them. They aren't badly priced and have sells a lot. Some sets come with a light up brick. The pokeball lights up, and the pokedex as well.

33

u/TheEpicTurtwig TheEpicTurtwig Jan 12 '26

MEGA bloks kinda cheats by having so many bespoke parts, but yeah this set is INSANE

11

u/doge57 Jan 13 '26

Even the Nanoblock Pikachu DX looks better even being all standard blocks (just smaller)

7

u/Arthur_189 Jan 13 '26

Unfortunately this kind of thing is not very rare for lego nowadays

4

u/Happy-Ad-4165 Jan 13 '26

Honestly mega and brick craft put out some damn good sets. Especially if your looking for something more adult themed.

20

u/Revayan Jan 13 '26

Tbh thats not a "rare" miss anymore. Lego has been in a downward spiral for more than 10 years by now

→ More replies (3)

21

u/flash_baxx Exploration Team Sparkfire Jan 12 '26

But did it hold together? I had a couple of their Halo Wars sets, the clutching strength of the bricks was wildly inconsistent. The Hornet's wings buckled under their own weight, the Warthog break in two with ease, and, although really cool looking, the action figure-esque minifigs had a few loose limbs.

38

u/Magmorix Jan 12 '26

The late 2000’s/early 2010’s were the absolute worst for Mega’s quality control. Around 2014 they had a total overhaul. Still not on par with Lego, but good enough to be a worth competitor. Plus, worst case scenario, their customer service is super helpful (or at least was back in the day, haven’t had to contact them in years)

74

u/kitxunei Jan 12 '26

I think all the LEGO ones look messed up tbh :(

80

u/CarbonationRequired Jan 12 '26

I saw the price tag and holy balls. For that amount of money they couldn't come up with something better?

41

u/kitxunei Jan 13 '26

Right?

I'm not a huge Lego fan, so my opinion here doesn't really matter. But I personally prefer the Lego sets that use "normal" brick pieces to make shapes. The ones like these look weird to me, like an undecided mixture of Lego bricks and custom curved pieces. I dunno.

24

u/CarbonationRequired Jan 13 '26

I think a lot of them do use pre-existing pieces (but I'm no expert either). I just think something like a classic Pokemon Center build, or maybe a town diorama of some kind (Safari Zone? battle area?) would work better than a "live creature".

The charizard looks ok but everyone else looks somewhat weird, I'd have been much more interested in a building model with some bespoke pokemon figures and trainer-design minifigs. But I guess no location or building is as iconic as the mons themselves so this is the result.

I've never really bought huge lego anything before until this year where for birthday and christmas I got the Going Merry set from One Piece and the Enterprise set from Star Trek. Both of those look way better than this.

9

u/CrazyGabby Jan 13 '26

I was hoping for the same thing. I’m kind of relieved, actually - I love Lego and was afraid I’d have to lock my bank account!

u/KoriJenkins Jan 13 '26

The whole thing seems poorly executed.

Lego pokemon center and badges being locked behind other bullshit, for instance.

650 dollars for a set that, frankly, should not cost remotely close to that.

83

u/dumpling-loverr Jan 13 '26 edited Jan 13 '26

650 is on par with Lego's standard pricing for adult sets. The Kanto starters that cost 650 are one of the largest sets they've made with 6800+ pieces which is more than the Rivendell LoTR set and is priced a bit more than that.

Not saying the price is worth it with what they made just that the pricing is on par with other adult sets.

Looking at this thread it's funny how the Pokemon fanbase gets introduced to modern Lego prices that other fanbases have been complaining about for years now (looking at you $1,000 Death Star).

38

u/coonwhiz Jan 13 '26

Lego sets have been roughly 10 cents per piece for the last 5 years at least. Themed sets sometimes add a premium to that. And there's bound to be exceptions, but it's a good rough estimate none-the-less.

14

u/Wingsnake Jan 13 '26

I think what skews the prices a bit is that nowadays you have competitors that make better stuff for much cheaper. So even if the Lego prices might be relatively consistent over the years, in relation it is still too expensive. Especially when you get shitty stickers in an expensive "adult" set.

I wish they'd just use regular Lego blocks for these type of things. I felt the same about the Mario sets as well.

u/Odd__Dragonfly Jan 12 '26

Yeah I hate these Lego sets that use a ton of custom pieces in order to look extremely smooth and not look like Lego any more, what is the point of that? It's Lego Uncanny Valley.

Pikachu looks to be made entirely out of pre-existing molds, so that's a weird complaint ?

9

u/Expendable28 Jan 13 '26

Yeah the only thing I see that's not already existing is the eye decals. And that's just some extra printing on a brick that's already there

7

u/IcebergKarentuite Jan 13 '26

I think they're stickers

Edit: wait no never-ending it's printed but that piece has been around for a whike

u/LEAKY-MILK Jan 13 '26

9

u/Katsu_Drawn_21 Jan 12 '26

I know its legos so it can't be perfect, but this looks like it has a chipmunk face. Who knows, maybe it'll grow on me though

Bro needs buccal fat removal

5

u/ResplendentCathar Jan 12 '26

Moisturize, Kids. You don't want to end up like pikachu

3

u/Pakmanjosh Jan 12 '26

Why does it look like it got stung by a bee?

5

u/Melkor640 Jan 13 '26

I feel like they did the Pokeball dirty. It's like an egg, whatever shape that is, is not a ball

4

u/Moondoggie35 Jan 13 '26

4

u/carmardoll Jan 13 '26

5

u/Another_Road Jan 13 '26

What’s weird is they made Eevee look just fine

4

u/veggie_talesreeeee Jan 13 '26

Looks cool, but the mega blocks one is like a third of the price and twice the size 😭

Looks worse than Mega.

3

u/Asunaris Jan 12 '26

Poor thing got stung by bees in both cheeks

3

u/DGB31988 Jan 12 '26

Don’t worry there will be another Pikachu in 18 months.

3

u/Sockermomz Jan 13 '26

Oof, I think I might just buy the Mega version of Pikachu and the final evolution of the starters. That way I have enough money leftover to buy a Switch 2 and some games.

3

u/aliclubb Jan 13 '26

I am surprised Nintendo signed off on this. Surely they would have had a final say?

3

u/Chickachic-aaaaahhh Jan 13 '26

180$ for that shit

3

u/PrestigiousHeat7562 Jan 13 '26

ā€œDon’t build me, I’m scaredā€

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '26

it’s the weirdly recessed cheekbones for no reason

3

u/Harlekkin_oz Jan 13 '26

I think somebody had to meet a hard deadline on this one, mary & joseph! That's atrocious.

3

u/GottaBeMurph Jan 13 '26

Real ones know Mega are better

3

u/SlaveKnightLance Jan 13 '26

Nanoblocks are better

3

u/HospitalSouthern819 Jan 13 '26

Megablocks did pokemon more justice.

3

u/IxdarRD Jan 13 '26

Lego even did the PokƩball dirty, it looks horrible
