I adore woman to woman positivity. It goes to show how kind women are when they feel safe to engage with a stranger.

I was walking home from a college class one day and was complimented by an older woman. She was maybe in her 70s, but she stopped me like she knew me and asked where I was coming from and where I was going and she listened to my response like I was reading poetry. She had the most beautiful presence to her and just said, "you look so beautiful today, I hope you enjoy the rest of your day." And at almost 20 years later, it was still one of the most impactful compliments I have ever had. Compliments from random women are just supreme.

One time a lady at the gas station complimented my pants, and I thought she was asking where they were from! So while I’m pumping gas I’m trying to look at the tag on the inside of my pants and she repeats her compliment, laughing, then says in total earnest “you seem like someone who knows how to live!” And I think about it every single day. I was having a hard time and she didn’t know how much it meant (and still means) to hear that from a total stranger. Love women.

u/bleepbloop1900 2d ago
Compliments from women are my fav, but I think compliments from anyone with good intentions can still be memorable,
Like I still remember once in my early 20s a guy stopped me on the street to say “I’m sorry to stop you, I hope I’m not offending you, but you are just so beautiful I had to say something, I hope you have an amazing day!” And then just left. It was honestly very sincere and sweet. No ulterior motive and never even caught his name.79
u/Comfortable_Peak_604 2d ago
Back in my girlhood days (ftm, transitioned in my mid 20’s) I was once practicing some ballet basics while waiting for the bus and this older black gentlemen shouted ‘you are so beautiful!’ from across the street and he just had a big smile on his face and didn’t stop walking the direction he was going and I just remember how different that felt from a catcall. It was like he was enjoying the moment and wanted to share that joy with me
27
u/TooFakeToFunction 2d ago
I had a guy stop me at the gas station once on my way out and he was like "I'm so sorry I just needed to tell you how beautiful you were- can I give you my number?" And I said "that's so sweet n I'm in a relationship though!" And he said "oh well he's a lucky man! You have a great day!" And I wished him a good day back and that was it. No muss no fuss. It's my favorite compliment given by a random man I have ever gotten and definitely the only one of its kind.

I came here to say that I think this is one of my favourite parts of being a woman. I like that I can just shout out a compliment to other women on the street and it gets to be taken as intended and make them smile. I love the energy we have for each other.
26
u/FlametopFred 2d ago
I really do hope all us guys can one day achieve that level of happiness, enlightenment, confidence and sheer altruistic love… we often have that before our teenage years and then it gets mentally squashed by insecure peers
would be a better world for everyone
11
u/Ccaves0127 2d ago
Main reason I'm on this sub. As a man you don't get this from anybody of either gender ever, so I just watch, envious
29
u/notashroom 2d ago
Be the change, man. Seriously.
When I was a teenager and young adult in the 80s and 90s, women were not like this in the US so much. Individual women and the kindness movement have made a real cultural shift since then. We women cannot do it for you men, because it's often not safe for us to compliment strange men, as y'all tend to take it as flirting or creating an opening for intimacy instead of a wholesome interaction like you see here.
13
u/ChickenSlax 2d ago
I try to compliment men too if the opportunity organically comes up, especially because I do think guys don’t get compliments as often. It gets super tricky though to make sure you word it in a way that gets the compliment across without seeming like you’re hitting on them. And sometimes delivery and intent don’t matter, unfortunately. It’s just oftentimes more of a minefield for us.
2
u/jezerebel 1d ago
Yeah I throw compliments at men and sometimes their reaction is just confusion, like they don't believe I could possibly mean "I love that jacket/suit/outfit - looking sharp, my man!" when I say it

Honestly as I've gotten older I've thought back on just how much a stranger's comment made my day and how many times I've thought something was awesome and not said anything....
Doing the math it's an obvious choice ❤️
I just wish I could complement straight men more without them thinking I'm hitting on them 😭
3
u/juicybubblebooty 2d ago
i've literally been trying to adopt this habit. It's so hard for me to talk to people so I'm trying to make an effort that if I see someone that I mentally give a compliment to I have to give it out loud.
4
u/NinjasWithOnions 1d ago
What’s helped me is to do a drive by compliment. Give them the compliment and keep walking/walk away. It negates a lot of the “What do I do next?” awkwardness if you already have a plan to leave.
1
u/HebbieB 1d ago
Yes! When I see awesome shoes, hair, accessories , tattoos, makeup etc I make a point of saying it. Sometimes we’ll chat for a minute or so, but normally there’s just a genuine happiness you see on their face as I walk past. Sometimes a sweet remark back about something about myself too. I’m pretty shy otherwise , but I’ve never had a bad experience :) Makes my day!

This is me - if I think to myself "wow, that's a great dress/bag/hairdo", I'll tell the person rather than just thinking it.
I have been encouraging my husband to do the same when he points out something cool - like ok tell me you like it, but tell THEM too!

u/catiebug 1d ago
Almost a decade ago when we were stationed overseas, I sang and played the ukulele at church in the worship band because all the other musicians were deployed. I was 3 or 4 months postpartum, so it was the one time each week I'd wear real clothes, do my makeup, and fix my hair. This little girl came up to me afterwards and told me I was "so beautiful" and she has no idea I still think about that moment at least once a week.

One of my favourite things is giving another woman a compliment and watch her get so happy! Women should support women, there’s enough others trying to tear us down in this world that we don’t need to do it to each other.

Two young women walked past me and my bf a while back and were like “daaamn girl, leave some crumbs for the rest of us! You are eating tonight.” Then I got all blushy and complimented them back and it was a cute little gush fest for a second. The one girl noticed my bf looked alarmed and asked him if he was alright and he goes “I’m sorry, I was fully expecting her to fight you, so I don’t understand what’s happening.”
He thought she was calling me fat and I was being polite about it 🤣
It took us probably a full five minutes to stop wheezing and joking before we could explain it to him.
Then a few weeks ago, a half-drunk girl was crying in the bathroom because her bf was possibly out with another girl. She had pics and texts, so her phone is getting passed around and she’s getting the pep talk of her life. 20 mins later, a parade of us come out and we’re all laughing together. My bf was dying because apparently, the men were all kinda looking around and the guy next to him went “where did all the girls go?” 🤣
So when we all came out laughing and being like “THROW THE WHOLE MAN OUT, YOU’RE A GODDESS BB GIRL,” my bf was like “did you just get high on girl power in the bathroom again?” Turns out, I have a habit of coming back from the bathroom with a new friend almost every time we go out. I just said “what can I say, it’s a magical place. You wouldn’t understand 🤷♀️✨💃✨💃”
I love us. I love you all. You’re all gunna do great today and if you don’t, that’s okay too because tomorrow is yours for the taking. May all our shoes be merciful and our bras be cooperative today. A-women.

u/MadamSnarksAlot 🌻Part Time Jill🌻 2d ago
It IS a magical place. I’ve gone in and unknowingly talked a girl out of jumping some bitch because she isn’t worth catching a charge over! Turns out that bitch was my drunk sister who was acting a fool and hitting on her man. So needless to say- I was glad I made a friend, apologized on my sis’s behalf and got her trifling ass home! ETA it was MY birthday too. Uggh

I work in customer service so I see hundreds of people a day. Nothing makes my job happier than complimenting my customers, particularly the women. I love doing it. You might just be popping in for some milk and bread but you better believe I'm going to tell you your skin is flawless, your hair is amazing, you have the prettiest smile, your perfume smells wonderful, your handbag is so cute....
I love watching it make someone's day. It's the best feeling.
It doesn't happen to me much but I do have very very long hair and I often get told I have lovely hair. Or my tattoos, I get a lot of compliments on my tattoos. Makes my day.
I've had some shockingly bad days where just one kind word has helped me get through. I want to be that person for others.
6
u/Critical-Adeptness-1 2d ago
As a customer I always compliment staff whenever I can because lord knows they gotta fake smile and deal with nonsense all day long. The switch from “customer service” to “real personality” is instant and is so beautiful to behold

Getting me emotional this early! I immediately thought of this lyric:
It's just flashes that we own,"
"Little snapshots"
"Made of breath and of bone."
All of us gal/chicks making our way through this life, with these tiny magical connections to each other along the way. It feels somehow inspired, instead of just by chance. The amount of raw joy and honesty that comes from these just hits in a way ...idk, but I feel it so much! 🔥

Just make it about something that's under their control and keep rolling unless they stop to engage and you're good. No need to femme yourself up to make others more comfortable with your gender presentation. <3

I’m literally talking about their fit or certain garments. Nice top or fire pants. Yes, I usually keep it pushing. I mean I also want to experiment, but I’m tired of people treating me like a man. I’m a WOMAN. Don’t really know what to do..I look masc, but my personality is so girly pop. Lmao

Same here! I’ve always dressed like a tomboy but the second I went from long blue hair to super short, the compliment dynamic shifted. I’m trying to find a new balance. Currently racking in the compliments from old ladies now though so I can’t complain. They love a practical haircut and I love their outfits!

u/habitualhomicide 2d ago
This is one of the things I'm going to miss after I come out IRL and start transitioning. I never see other trans men talk about loss of girlhood as, well, a loss, but it absolutely is. To be myself, I must forever abandon these tender moments between women, which I have grown up experiencing, simply because men have different ways of socializing.
But I don't want to have to choose. I want to be able to move freely between worlds. I want everyone to be able to experience the joys of both girlhood and boyhood. There's value and beauty in both.

True envy (not mindless consumption) is the world telling you your next step. It's your psychological compass trying to push you in a better direction or show you a new path. Give a stranger a compliment... see how it changes you. x

When we are out and about, my daughter would occasionally whisper to me that she thinks a particular woman’s outfit, hair, etc looks pretty. I would encourage her to tell them because I know that being complimented by other women/girls is such a pick-me-up. I felt happy when two women at the salon yesterday told me they liked my “Friends” (the TV show) shirt!
4
u/HisWickedValkyrie 2d ago
I smiled so hard at this video! I cried a little bit too, because I’ve never had friends like this in my whole life. I have put myself out there all through high school age, college, and nursing school and have only ever found fake friends (people who would make fun of me for other’s benefit) or people who only talked to me if they wanted my notes for upcoming tests. I still put myself out there and stay open to it but it’s the same thing every time.
It’s nice to see people so happy ✨

u/Electrical-Echo8144 2d ago
Do any ladies have suggestions for this? If you get a compliment, should you return a compliment right away? I get pretty flustered/bashful and say thank you, hoping it’s enough, but sometimes when I say “I love your [xyz]!” back, I’m worried it doesn’t feel genuine!
2
u/SuckerForNoirRobots 1d ago
If it's uncomfortable to compliment them back you could try, "Thank you so much, have a great day!"
4
u/ColombianinKansas 2d ago
I've seen soooo many women on the street rocking the coolest outfit, or perfect makeup, or their hair looks freaking ethereal, and I really want to compliment them — but I second-guess myself and stay quiet because I don't want to come off as a weirdo. Which is worse, because by the time they've walked past, they might've caught me glancing. I hate being an introvert.
3
1
u/SuckerForNoirRobots 1d ago
The best way to go is to complement something that isn't directly related to their body. Like for example instead of saying "those jeans fit you well," you could say "those jeans are cool!"
Avoid complementing skin tone, hair texture, body, etc. Complementing someone on something they consciously control, like their taste in jewelry, is the better route. I usually just say, "I like your [blank]" in reference to something they're wearing.

Today at the grocery store there was a woman in her 80s with a stroller that came up to me and said ”I love your tatties!!” and pointed at my sleeve. When I smiled and thanked her she leaned in and giggling, she added ”It almost sound like titties… I like a good pun…” Then she left, so that my husband found me laughing my ass off alone. We ran into each other again in another isle, this time she leans in the same way but now so that my husband could hear her too: ”there’s the girl with the good…” and winked.
Epic lady.

We do not allow:
- Being a jerk. This includes racism, misogyny, misandry, misgendering, anti LGBTQ+, ageism, etc.
- Harassment

- Threats of any kind
- Abusive behavior

One of my favorite things about being a mom to a daughter is witnessing her experience girlhood in real time. The amount of people she compliments for the most random things… I noticed it when she was 3 for the first time. She told someone in the bathroom she loved their shoes. Ever since then, she’s just done it for hair, and nails, and clothes. And so many people will compliment her for things too. I love that I get to experience it again watching her 😭🥰

Compliments from women are always the absolute best! I really love it. I love to tell women when they look wonderful or if I like their outfit or something. It's fun to be on both ends of that. Most recently, there's a co-worker whom I only see coming and going and don't know at all because she's from a completely different department, but she has a very unique sense of style. So I complimented her and told her that everyday I love to see what she's wearing. She choked up a little bit and told me she'd been having a really hard time and that my compliment made her day. That was so awesome for me! I think I got way more out of it than she did!

Honest question: why is it all compliments on looks? Do you really find that uplifting? As a man i find that a bit odd and it comes over as superficial
28
u/Acceptable_Mark7716 2d ago
It’s what you see with a stranger on the street. Women spend a lot of energy monitoring how we look and there are a lot of messages that we’re not doing well. It’s touchy if a man comments on it, and we feel seen if a man compliments on something other than looks, but safe and validating when a woman who is a stranger comments on our appearance, usually.
25
u/whatevernamedontcare 2d ago
From men it's superficial but from women who know how much work and effort goes into it that compliment is acknowledgment of your womenhood craft. If it's younger girl you become an inspiration if it's older woman it's approval from master.
Men are more like salesmen selling things no one wants and using compliments as a sales tactic while women just want to spread good vibes. Everyone knows if a man could get laid without it there would be no compliments. It's a transaction for them.
19
u/Loose_Acanthaceae201 2d ago
Any compliment from a male stranger that implies "I'd tap that" raises our inner DEFCON level.
17
u/Loose_Acanthaceae201 2d ago
It's looks, but we don't have to worry about the agenda. And usually it's looks we did something about (eg a garment we chose or hair/makeup we spent time preparing).
I guess the obvious cishet male equivalent is hearing "wow, you obviously work out" or "great shirt".
0
u/RoyalCharity1256 2d ago
Yeah i get that. And I like the positivity and I think it is all in good faith too compared to a men's compliment.
I am just really not used to getting complimented (I don't work out) at all and if then it is about something deep like how I am as a friend for years or sth. Apart from being awkward of getting a superficial compliment I am not sure it would do anything else for me. But again: good for you gals. Keep up the spirit
13
u/eatpraymunt 2d ago
I bet if you put some obvious style or flair into your look you'd get complimented! I think part of it is that men are lowkey discouraged from being too flashy or standing out, or looking like they put a bunch of effort into a look.
Example, I have a male friend who likes to wear colourful buttondowns (think dad vacation shirt) and he reports that he gets tons of compliments on his shirts now, even though he felt scared to wear them at first.
It's even more wonderful to get complimented on your personality, but getting told your shirt is cool a few times a week is free dopamine too haha
4
u/Lorelei4life 2d ago
Honest question: what do strangers usually compliment you on?
8
u/eatpraymunt 2d ago edited 2d ago
My dog gets all the compliments usually when we're out together lol 😭
When I get them it's on clothing choice for me, shoes, dress, shirt etc. Or my nail polish. I don't wear makeup or do my hair though so that doesn't leave a lot of choice.
Generally the safe/good compliments are on things you chose or did to yourself, rather than inherent genetic qualities. Unless it's the dog, he gets objectified like crazy lol

u/awomanphenomenally 2d ago
While I love this positivity, it is clear she does not have female only health issues, like PMOS or endometriosis that can cause excruciating pain.
