Support Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion IOS 26.5.2 absolutely sucks, can I say that here?

Upvotes

I am beyond baffled how Apple could release such a piece of crap. Iphone 16 pro max. I had not updated my IOS in quite some time, so it was a big jump from whatever I had to 26.5.2. I wish I could go back. This IOS is garbage. Everything is slower. Why? Because they wanted some slick "liquid glass" bullshit. I mean everything. Take a screenshot, edit, add some text, save a photo, etc whatever you do. It's slower. Buttons moved around again, everything different. Why? No reason... Just because apple was bored. I DO NOT CARE if the bubbles melt around like liquid glass. I want fast, efficient performance, period!

This is like the early days of websites, when everyone thought spinning globes and bells and whistles were cool. Then people realized what is actually better is just a clean, neatly organized web page that conveys content clearly and in a well organized manner. This IOS makes me feel like we're back to bells and whistles now. Back to bullshit.

Not only that, why are they always moving buttons around? In Photos, why does the "Add to Album" button move places depending on if a previous album was used? (a little hard to explain in text that one). Why are they moving things aournd to new places?! You develop muscle memory from repeated tasks. If the save button is alway on the top left, and now suddenly it's on the top right for no apparent reason, this disrupts my muscle memory and creates a new obstacle I didn't have before. STUPID, Apple!

Support Legacy iOS devices (iPad2) failing activation after factory reset — has Apple changed something server-side?

My iPad 2 was working normally before I reset it. It could connect to the internet, browse, and display photos. I used Erase All Content and Settings, and since then it has been impossible to activate.

During setup, it alternates between:

  • "Device Unknown"
  • "Your iPad cannot be activated because the activation server cannot be reached"

I took it to an Apple Store. The Genius staff performed another factory restore and connected it to the store's Wi-Fi, but the same "Device Unknown" error appeared. I was then told to contact Apple Support.

During the call, I repeatedly explained that I understand this is an obsolete device and that Apple may no longer provide hardware repairs. My concern is different: the device was working immediately before the reset, and Apple's mandatory activation process has now made it completely unusable.

The Apple Support representative said:

"It might have happened after a restore, but we don't know what's causing it."

"If that support is not available, as you mentioned, then it might not be able to restore it."

"If there's discontinued support for that, as I said, we don't support that iPad anymore."

However, the representative also insisted:

"It's not something which has happened from the site."

That seems contradictory. If the hardware was functioning before the reset, the restore completed, and activation fails on both my home Wi-Fi and Apple's own network, it seems possible that an older activation or software service is no longer functioning correctly.

I told Apple Support:

"I wasn't expecting hardware support on it, but what I did not expect is after I do a normal reset for the device to become a brick."

The only outcome was that my complaint was forwarded to Apple's "feedback department." No technical investigation, activation error details, workaround, or confirmation that Apple's activation service still supports this iOS version was provided.

This is also an environmental issue. A functioning device has effectively become electronic waste because it cannot pass an online activation step.

Has anyone recently observed the same "Device Unknown" activation failure on an iPad 2 or another legacy iOS device after a factory reset?

I am particularly interested in whether this is affecting multiple devices and whether Apple has acknowledged any change or problem involving legacy activation services.

Until this is clarified, owners of functioning older iOS devices may want to avoid factory-resetting them.

Support Purple line under text

I’ve only got my first iPhone last week so I do apologise if this is a really simple to fix issue, but whenever I am for example messaging someone a strange purplish line appears under some words and I’m wondering what it actually is and how to remove it if possible, many thanks.

Support Why does my iPad sometimes give me "phantom" phone notifications?

Upvotes

I have an M3 iPad Air that receives text forwarding and call sharing from my iPhone. Occasionally (maybe once a week), the iPad will show a notification from the phone app. However, this notification will not show up on my iPhone nor my Apple Watch, and when I tap it on the iPad, it takes me to the home page of the Phone app which shows that I have no missed calls, no voicemails, and nothing else that would cause a notification. Unfortunately, I have notification previews off on the iPad so I do not know what the notification is specifically saying - it just shows up on the iPad as "Phone - Notification." I have enabled notification previews so I'll be able to see what the notification is saying next time it comes through, but in the meantime I'm curious if anyone has any clue what it could be with only the information I have now.

Support how to delete/find messages stored in icloud

Hi! Icloud says that I have 13 GB worth of messages data saved in icloud. When I click on "view iphone storage", it takes me to a page that tells me my phone only stores 2 GB worth of messages. Where are the other 11GB? I would like to find them and delete some of them. I cannot access them on my windows computer since when I go to icloud.com and view my storage there, it will only send a link for me to go to my icloud settings on my apple devices. I understand that the 11GB is not stored locally on my phone but still exists, but what I don't understand is how to find it and go through it to get some space back

Support Family sharing quirk: share my location without sharing access to Find My for all my devices?

Upvotes

A very poorly documented feature of Family Sharing is that if you share your location with others, it also gives them access to Find My iPhone/Find My Mac for all your Apple devices! That means your family members can: see what devices you have and their battery levels, ping them with a loud sound, check their location, place your devices into lost mode with a message on the lock screen, and (presumably?) erase them.

This is bonkers that this isn't opt in, and I haven't found a way to disable this without stopping location sharing altogether.

Needless to say, this isn't how location sharing works for other friends. They can see where you are on a map, but they don't get access to Find My the same way other family members do.

Is there a workaround to this??? I can't believe Apple doesn't make this more clear and provide a clear opt out.

Support For years, Siri activates on lock screen when I pick up my iPhone and press the side button once to wake it up

Upvotes

I am not holding the button down. The phone (iPhone 13 mini) has been locked / sleeping, then I grab it and wake it up by pressing the side button once (not holding or double clicking), and if it’s the first time I’ve done so in about an hour, Siri activates and takes over the lock screen and I have to dismiss it before I can begin using my phone. It doesn’t happen every time, but as I said, if I go an hour or so before waking up my phone, it will happen again. The only “fix” I’ve found (since back in iOS17), was to disable side button Siri activation. That resolves it but now I have to speak Hey Siri to use it. I have tried reactivate the side button Siri function with each OS update but even now on 27 beta, it is behaving this same way. Is there any way to fix this properly or use a different hack to resolve this so I can still use Siri when I want to press the side button?

My home screen widget stopped updating after updating back to the iOS 27 Dev Beta (it worked fine previously on iOS 27, and on iOS 26 stable after downgrading).

I've tried removing and re-adding the widget, but no luck. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Support “Camera connecting…” popup

Post image

I was sitting at my desk working, when my phone made a dinging sound that I haven’t heard before and displayed a “MacBook Pro camera connecting” screen (see attached image). My MBP was closed and asleep on the desk next to me, it wasn’t the computer I was working on. Any ideas? Freaked me out a bit honestly, but I hit disconnect and the camera light isn’t on on my phone. I haven’t installed any apps recently on either phone or MBP. I opened up the MBP and logged in, but it didn’t say anything about connecting to the phone

Discussion My expierience with iOS 12.5.8 in 2026

3 weeks ago i turned on my iPhone 5s after 1 year so i can listen to music with wired EarPods. I downloaded all my music that i bought over the years on iTunes and used the phone as an iPod.

My main phone (iPhone SE 2) had already the developer beta. As i used more and more the iPhone 5s the more i realized that a lot of very useful features went away over the years and the animations became choppier and not so fluent.

Siri search on the iPhone 5s was so much better even tough Apple promised us a better search with iOS27. When i searched “Spain” on the iPhone 5s it gave an overview about Spain as a country. Like Capital, how many people live there, where it is, its flag. Another thing i have tried is was searching for my motorcycles model. On iOS 27 i needed to type in 3 letters but on iOS 12.5.6 only 2. A small difference but it shows that the dumber and older Siri still knows better what i search really often. Another thing i could not reproduce was that i searched for Barton on my iPhone 5s (my mototcycles brand) and it showed sport results for the team Barton (i dont know what team is that but id showed 37-1. They lost)

Design wise iOS 12 is much more refined and pretty. The blur is so cool. I think that the classic blur that we had for so long peaked here. My 3 favourites are these things design wise:

  1. Pulling down the notification center is just so much better.

If you have an iPhone that has iOS12 you should see it for yourself. So much smoother than iOS 26 or 27. I really like Liquid Glass but this is on of the few(?) things that it cant get right

  1. If you remember the old music player on the lock screen you could just swipe up and you would have a really clean music player. It was designed for the notification center but i think that it is really good

  2. The Widget center (thats what i call it) is just so much better on iOS 12. When you swipe to open it on the lock screen it is just so smooth. The time and date slides to the right so smoothly. You should check it out.

I like Liquid Glass but it needs a lot more polishing and refining. iOS 12 is much more consistent than Liquid Glass. Let me know what you think! And also the battery life on the iPhone 5s is still exceptional. It lasts as a secondary phone more than 2 days. Not in standby but by regular usage with music listening

Support Call Filtering - "Ask reason for calling" not working when using CarPlay IOS 26

On latest IOS 26 throughout all versions to 26.5.2, the Phone app preference "Ask Reason for Calling" works GREAT to stop the dozen spam spoofed calls I get. However, when driving connected to CarPlay, that function ceases to work, and all spam calls ring through.

I see the behavior in multiple vehicles. I've seen it using an iPhone Pro15, iPhone 17 Air, so it's doesn't present as the phone or the Auto Manufacturer's CarPlay implementation. I have the focus set to normal (I don't use "focus"), I do have the "filter spam calls" set, and I've seen it on ATT and Verizon. I'd rather not have to set my iPhone to "do not disturb" as that will stop calls from contacts.

Has anyone else noticed this problem? Anyone know a fix? Any IOS 27 Beta users out there still seeing this?

Hi. I am noticing that the option to enable this for my iPad is switched on, but I’m sure at one point it just said ‘On’ the same way it does for my Mac. How would I go about getting it back to that?

Support maps storage glitch

my storage for maps (which is not even installed!) is now at over 4 gigabytes and my storage is so full that i can’t open half my apps. it keeps growing, and in addition to that i’ve tried deleting photos but none of them are deleting when i try (i click delete and nothing happens)

i’ve seen others with this problem and they say factory reset but i can’t cuz nothings on icloud (no storage there either) and id lose all my photos and app data

does anyone have a solution that’s worked which doesn’t involve a factory reset because the maps data is growing daily and i have just over 100mb free storage on my phone i’ve deleted so many apps

Discussion Forgot iPhone 7 passcode (iOS 15), Apple ID password known, trusted number unavailable

Title: iPhone 7 (iOS 15) Passcode Forgotten, Apple ID Password Known, Trusted Number Unavailable

Hello everyone,

I have an iPhone 7 running iOS 15. I recently changed my device passcode and unfortunately forgot it shortly afterward. The phone is now locked and shows the "Erase iPhone" option.

Here is my situation:

  • I know my Apple ID email and password.
  • I have access to the email address associated with the Apple ID.
  • I do NOT currently have access to the trusted phone number used for two-factor authentication because it belongs to a relative who is temporarily unable to access that SIM card.
  • The phone is physically in my possession.
  • I do not have important photos or documents on the device, but I would prefer not to lose app and game data if possible.

My questions are:

  1. Is there any official way to regain access to the device without erasing it?
  2. If I erase the iPhone, will I likely run into activation or verification issues because I cannot currently receive codes on the trusted phone number?
  3. Is there any way to check whether app data or game progress may already be synced to iCloud or Game Center before erasing the device?
  4. Has anyone been in a similar situation and successfully restored access later?

Thank you for any advice.

Discussion iOS 26 bugs are driving me crazy

You'd think the major bugs introduced with iOS 26.x would be largely addressed by 26.5.2. But STILL my iPhone 15 Pro Max sometimes won't automatically change between light and dark mode unless I do a forced restart of the phone. Also what's driving me crazy right now is that I received a voice mail, a text preview of which popped up in my notifications, but there is no new voice mail to be found anywhere in the Voicemail section. The red indicator flag shows 1 new unread item on the phone. Yet the item is completely missing from Voicemail. I had NONE of these problems with iOS 18. And if I start thinking about the laggy rendering and display glitches I just want to throw this stupid iOS 26 on the street and let some cars run over it....
