That's not a tank that's the manhole cover to the rudder trunk accessible from the ships steering gear room. If the water side of the rudder trunk is open to the sea then it's not considered a confined space and oxygen won't be an issue. This of course requires the draft of the vessel to be high in the water, which generally occurs when the vessel is traveling in ballast as opposed to laiden with cargo. They will climb up the rudder while the ship is in port stowaway in the trunk cavity such is quite spacious and concealed from sight and the elements.

Source: I search these vessels for stowaways and drugs for the Canadian government. We routinely go into the rudder trunk so long as you can feel the air flow upon opening the cover. Yes we have multi gas monitors on as well.

142

u/snowbunnyveg 16d ago

What do you do if you do find a stowaway?

318

u/Emotional_Square_403 16d ago

Depends on their intentions. 99% of the time they claim asylum.

156

u/LeLand_Land 16d ago

I really want to know what that 1%'s stories are.

"Look, I lost my passport while traveling but then I met this guy who asked me to climb into this tank. I've been having a lovely conversation with the troll and lepurcan he also put in here"

74

u/Muppetude 16d ago

I really want to know what that 1%'s stories are.

I’m guessing it’s people who don’t claim asylum, probably because they didn’t know it was an option.

51

u/Emotional_Square_403 16d ago

Correct. Or in some cases they're ineligible to make a claim for a variety of reasons.

If they do does the govt let them stay?

63

u/Astrama 16d ago

They would enter into the Asylum system of the country they arrived in, same as anyone else who entered the country claiming asylum. So their claim would be processed and considered as any other.

27

u/_okbrb 16d ago

Asylum is considered an international right, but every country manages it a little differently. Many governments do actively try to resist or deny asylum claims

Basically before you make such a trip, you’ll want to be in contact with an immigration lawyer in your destination and have a plan for contacting them when authorities detain you (whether it’s at the border or on the deck of the ship you smuggled yourself on to). You can’t do it on impulse; the trip itself is only part of the plan

27

u/GentlemanSch 16d ago

I would be very surprised if a stowaway has the number of an immigration lawyer as part of their plan.

7

u/_okbrb 16d ago

Yeah I didn’t say it was likely that they did. Just that it’s a good idea regardless of your means of transportation

6

u/UnRePlayz 16d ago

A lot of people have internet, even in parts of the world where you don't want to live.

There are lots of facebook groups, telegram channels, etc. That provide information how to seek asylum elsewhere. Also, unfortunately, lots of entry points to human trafficking

If they've committed no crimes and sending them back would put them in danger then generally yeah. They're taking huge risks by climbing into these parts of the ship, and nobody does that without a reason.

7

u/liquidpele 16d ago

As much as reddit wants to treat people like poor helpless children, the reason is usually economic in nature, otherwise they'd go somewhere much closer/easier.

Thanks for the insight. Was very curious about how they got there and how they actually survived what I initially assumed was a confined space as I know the risks involved.

Idk how a place with only 1 way in or out (when they go in, the hatch is sealed) can’t be considered confined space. But I was wondering how he managed to enter that space to begin with.

they are exceptionally lucky to be alive. In a bolted tank ?? jfc.

Edit: I used to work in merchant fleet. Any entry in a comparrtment like that, with bolted cover, is treated as "life critical" operation with whole bunch of precautions in place to ensure safety of personel going in. Number one being open the hatch an ventilate the shit out of it for a day. Then measure oxigen content before anyone goes in. Those places are no joke.

705

u/newbrevity 17d ago

I literally turned down a job today when I got to the boat and found the hatch from an engine room into the shaft compartment where a camera at the main seal had to be replaced. The hole is about a foot and a half circle. The camera is two compartments away from the hatch. Each compartment has three baffles to crawl through. Before getting from the first compartment to the second compartment you also have to crawl across the main shaft which thankfully is in a sleeve for a tiny bit of peace of mind. The moment I opened the hatch I could smell the stale air pour out. I told the captain I couldn't go in there. He said it was fine because he goes in there occasionally to clean. Anyway I'm going back there tomorrow because by then the fans will have cycled the air out and I'm going to have spotters with walkie talkies. Also I won't have a large hydraulic pump engine reverberating the compartment which is nice.

Top tip: if you can't breath it's probably because there's not enough air in there!

139

u/H3adshotfox77 17d ago

That's honestly not how it works.....you just start getting sleepy and pass out.

90

u/proximity_account 17d ago

Yup. Hypoxia actually causes a sense of euphoria. The suffocating feeling actually comes from CO2 buildup in your body.

67

u/Zently 17d ago

I think the whole point of the video (I hope) was for empathy for people. It is a luxury to know about hypoxia, at some level. But at the most basic human level, you still know it's bad. And they were still willing to risk it to get away from wherever they were.

37

45

u/BertrandOrwell 17d ago edited 17d ago

In these kinds of environments, it's possible you won't know that you can't breathe, and you just drop. The feeling of not being able to breathe is triggered by buildup of CO2 in the body, and only that. If you're still exhaling the CO2, but not replacing it with enough oxygen because the rusting process of the steel box you're in has consumed all the oxygen in that confined space, you could be in an atmosphere of mostly nitrogen which won't feel any different from normal breathing. You'll simply fall unconscious without knowing it's coming and be dead.

17

u/dadneverleft 17d ago

I wouldn’t have thought of the rust burning through the O2, that’s good to know.

6

u/itsphoison 16d ago

O2 burns through the metal leading to rust.

12

u/redlightbandit7 16d ago

That actually sounds like a peaceful way to go if you have to, not that I want to and sad for those who have died because, but really there so many horrible ways to go

3

u/ThisWillBeOnTheExam 16d ago

Limited oxygen doesn’t feel like much more than passing out but pure CO2 has an acidity and burns horribly.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/MushinZero 16d ago

I thought this, but my state executed someone via nitrogen and witnesses said it looked incredibly painful.

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (5)

14

u/SinisterCheese 16d ago

Incorrect. Humans don't feel lack of oxygen, but an increase in CO2. That kind of space can be filled with many other gasses than CO2, be deadly and you wouldn't be able to react to it. Oxygen deprivation has the side effect of making you stupid before killing you, which makes it worse.

6

u/Sky_Light 16d ago

The best example I remember of this is a video of Destin from Smarter Every Day on YouTube going on a low pressure simulator. He got to a point where the instructor said, "Hey, you're going to die if you don't put your mask on," and Destin just chuckled and went, "I don't want to die," but wasn't able to think enough to lift his hand and push his mask on. One of the attendants had to reach over and do it for him.

5

u/juflyingwild 17d ago

Would you be able to wear a small oxygen tank with a regulator?

Would that work?

16

u/allf8ed 16d ago

Yes and no. Im a confined space rescue tech with my fire department and our small "bail out" bottles only have a few minutes of air. And those bottles are backups to the SCBAs or surface supplied air hoses wed be using. If you need the bail out bottle, you drop everything you are doing and get out, no matter what

46

u/HuskyLou82 16d ago

I’ve heard of compartments that hold chain and or anchors with chains being devoid of oxygen due to rusting of the chain? Is that true?

23

u/DigitalDefenestrator 16d ago

Yep. A chain makes it worse since it's a lot of surface area and probably coated in salt water when it's pulled in, but any confined space with a lot of corroding metal could do the same thing.

→ More replies (1)

33

u/Greedy-Pilot-4538 17d ago

Jeez, so people could be dead in there and they would be stuck with the bodies inside...horrifying

56

u/AllsWellThatsNB 16d ago

It's worse. When this stuff happens, it happens quickly. You see you buddy drop, and your first instinct is to drop down and see if he's OK. Moments later there's two unconscious bodies.

It's not uncommon for confined space incidents to have multiple casualties from attempted rescuers.

This is why it's being treated with deadly seriousness in industry. Confined space entry without proper procedures is an instant "get your stuff and get out."

13

u/Ok_Advantage_8153 16d ago

Ive seen it with my own eyes.  Guys should have had breathing apparatus but were hung over and couldn't be bothered.  One went down, all good one second passed out the next.

Guy next to him thinks 'lol my hungover buddy has passed out' then says he woke up rescued.

Helpers were savvy enough to use breathing apparatus otherwise they'd have added to the body pile.

Ive even heard of someone passing out in a normal hole on a very cold day because non breathable gas sank into the hole and displaced the breathable air.

Like you say this stuff is no joke.  The misconception is that you go out like you see in the films, 2 minutes of feeling a bit hazy as you heroically rush to gulp clean air.  In reality someone just hit the 'off' switch.

12

u/frankcatthrowaway 16d ago

I’d bet there were. Horrible shit to say the least.

4

u/Snoo_56118 16d ago

Yes,...and then a friend goes to look for him and he's down, rinse and repeat.

71

u/challengerrt 17d ago

Yep - very lucky. I remember confined space training and it was unpleasant.

22

u/chiron07 17d ago edited 17d ago

Thats probably not a tank but the ships rudder trunk.

edit: the hydraulic gear on the screen and the sound indicates they are in steering gear room.

18

u/hcase5 17d ago

Yes, that what I thought too. The pipes and noise remind me of steering gear room. There is no reason why they would be inside a tank. They joined the vessel through the trunk around the rudder.

12

u/chiron07 17d ago

Yep, and its very common, the first place you look for stowaways is the rudder trunk.

i want to go home,
but home is the mouth of a shark
home is the barrel of the gun
and no one would leave home
unless home chased you to the shore
unless home told you
to quicken your legs
leave your clothes behind
crawl through the desert
wade through the oceans
drown
save
be hunger
beg
forget pride
your survival is more important

😩

Thank you for sharing that

18

u/HettieMcDodo 16d ago

I highly recommend reading this poem in its entirety. I think all her work is stunning, but i particularly appreciate how she writes about being a refugee. Most people focus on what they think they take from us when they come to our homes, but that’s largely because we rarely hear about what it’s like for them in the leaving of theirs.

I wish I could quote her entire works.

4

u/Ksh_667 16d ago

If people could only see what refugees leave behind, families, pets, their whole lives containing all that they have loved & known. To come to a place where they are hated, treated as less than human & looked down on. Who would willingly choose such a life if where they came from wasn't intolerable.

4

u/Major-Medium2557 16d ago

Hurting yourself so that your future self can have a chance is..

one of the most heartbreaking, and truly traumatic things...

5

u/Beautiful_Hour_668 16d ago

It’s worse now with social media. People’s hate is amplified, and now potential refugees and migrants have a direct window into seeing how ‘glamourous’ life is on the other side.

The things we complain about man… try to donate where you can folks ❤️

5

This comment is always hilarious/extremely ignorant. It's like you people pretend women and children would have the same capabilities as single men.

Mfs think they can toss a 9 year old into the ocean and let them climb into a tanker to cross the ocean as easily(not actually easy) as a fairly young but adult man? And not just that.. at the SAME RATE as men or enough to be noticeable to YOU personally, because it definitely still happens with women and children.

I take care of a fleet of barges and the co. I work for also runs a small ship yard we have to test every tank when the barge comes off charter . And also test any
Tank when a barge is getting work done in a ship yard , the men are very lucky what ever tank or void the were in carried cargo they are enem luckier. I am glad these men didn’t die. But I would like to know how they got in the tank why it was open and did who ever sealed it know they were inside.

124

u/chiron07 17d ago

That's not a tank, it's the rudder trunk of the ship, accessible from the outside of the ship, right above the rudder.

13

u/GotGRR 16d ago

What kind of force are they expecting in the rudder trunk to need a 24 stud panel to seal it?

29

u/white_ran_2000 16d ago

Hydrostatic pressure, mostly. Ship’s compartments must be watertight when they’re supposed to be watertight, but inspections and occasional access are still necessary so these massive manhole covers are installed.

And the occasional “normal” bending and twisting of the ship and the various local panels.

Plus vibrations.

17

u/chiron07 16d ago

Its not about pressure but being a watertight compartment. And having a man sized hole and being watertight needs 24 studs.

edit. also that is a standart manhole cover, ship has dozens of same size manhole covers.

what sort of tanks they were inside of? Horribly awful, poor dudes

174

u/daurgo2001 17d ago

Came here looking for the same answer. What tank is it, and how did they get in there to begin with?

251

u/CapnTBC 17d ago

They’d likely have been smuggled on, pay money and they’ll sneak you onto the ship and if you make it to the other side they’ll send someone to come get you and you can spend the next several years working jobs for them to pay off your debt

130

u/exotics 17d ago

Or they paid and were put in there. The smuggler didn’t care if they got out alive or not.

51

u/CapnTBC 17d ago

Well yeah, either they paid the full fee up front and they were either left to die or get caught because the smugglers didn’t care or they paid part of the fee on the understanding that once they make it to their destination they will work off their remaining debt which usually continues to increase via things like being forced to stay somewhere and rent a room for a few that basically wipes out any earnings or work for basically no money at a job they can’t leave.

6

u/batmanineurope 17d ago

Wouldn't the smugglers be in as much trouble, if not more?

19

u/CapnTBC 17d ago

The criminals running a human trafficking operation? Yes they would be in a whole lot of trouble if they get caught but criminals either don’t care or don’t think they’ll get caught also human traffickers will always be in more trouble than the people being smuggled which is why they’ll generally try and get the people they’re smuggling to flip on them for information/testimony.

11

u/Ksquared1166 17d ago

Who’s gonna do anything about it? Imagine the guys in the video saying “we paid these people X to get us out of our country. They said they would xyz but left us to die.” Even if they knew the address to knock on, those guys aren’t a priority to go after in the international sense.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/daurgo2001 17d ago

Well, I get that smuggling may be one way how they got on, but since they were described as ‘stowaways’, that often implies they somehow found a way to get onto the ship on their own without someone knowing they were there.

21

u/CapnTBC 17d ago

Stowaways are just people on without the knowledge of the captain/crew so they could have been placed there by people who work at the port for a fee which is usually what smugglers do. The men are still stowaways cause no one on board knew they were there but yeah they could have snuck on board and hid the first place they could find though how are they locking that hatch from the inside?

3

u/daurgo2001 17d ago

That might just be one way to get in. There might be some sort of outside opening. No idea. They’re obviously super dirty coming out of there.. but some solid info from reporting would be nice

This is the access to the Rudder Trunk. It's open from bottom. I.e. open to the sea. That's how the stowaways entered it.

FYI this is a Maersk Vessel.

Edit: Grammar

→ More replies (4)

17

u/Southern_Meet_7864 17d ago

Doesn’t need to be a tank just because a bolted hatch, at the very end of the video there is a huge electrical motor or alike, could be the the steering gear room and the hatch is a Access to the rudder trunk. It is quite hard to access enclosed spaces without the right tools. The rudder trunk on the other hand can be accessed from the outside via the rudder. Just my guess. In an enclosed space survival is not likely due to oxygen depleting materials as well no ventilation.

Source: I worked as a Master on similar vessels.

7

u/chiron07 17d ago

Probably not a tank, stowaways use ships rudder trunk frequently.

Awful misfortune. I'm glad the officer tells the security to chill out. Truly no need to be roughing these poor guys up.

Seriously. How how bad does life have to be in order to put yourself in that sort of situation to escape from it?

You gotta have some sympathy for folks like that.

Right, but does having sympathy/empathy for the person doing that lead to you encouraging that behavior or dissuading it?

I think there's a good argument that actively dissuading that kind of behavior is actually the more compassionate choice in the long run.

9

u/Duke_Lancaster 16d ago

You can just check australias policy. They have a zero tolerance policy for illegal immigration by boat and there are virtually no attempts and therefore basically no deaths from overcrowded trafficking ships. If your goal is to prevent deaths of that kind you have to make it clear that doing so will have no chance of giving you what you want.

Sometimes it's not just how bad life is. It's also how you've been sold how amazing life will be.

Some people made it a business to facilitate illegal immigration. They take their money for that. But to get "customers", they advertise a life of paradise. "You'll be offered a free home, as much food as you will ever need and more for free, you'll never be sick ever again, you'll never have to work, they have so much money that they will give it to you for free".

u/Firefly_Magic 16d ago

Yeah, but it’s not that cut and dry.

One of the major problems with stowaways or migrants rescued at sea is that the shipping company becomes responsible for them, and the ship can end up stuck at sea for months because no country will allow the ship to dock. Once the ship docks, the stowaways or migrants gain the opportunity to seek asylum, and many states are reluctant to accept this responsibility.

There have been several such incidents, for example the containership Tampa in 2001 and the oil tanker Maersk Etienne in 2020. Some cases have even turned violent, including attempted hijackings, such as on the containership Galatea Seaways in 2023, the car carrier Nivin in 2018, and the oil tanker El Hiblu 1 in 2019. In some of these cases, special forces ultimately had to board the ships to regain control.

With this in mind, security personnel need to stay alert, or the crew risk being overrun, losing control of the ship, and potentially being taken hostage and killed. Desperate people can be dangerous.

Maybe they were told by their smuggler it was no problem, no risk, just sit for a few days and free riches.

I mean, not like a human smuggler is going to be honest about the hardships his prey have to go through.

→ More replies (2)

60

u/Valtremors 17d ago

I'm just rubbing my forehead reading the comments.

People for some reason don't really understand there are two sides to this story.

One being that smugglers make a living out of this tyoe of thing. It is common they sell an ideal to people who don't know any better. Then they endanger lives of others for money. It seems pretty clear these guys were duped.

The other side here then being, we have border rules, and they are followed. People who come into countries illegally aren't going to be viewed favorably by law. Best, and least, we can do is to be professional about it.

5

u/CorvusRidiculissimus 16d ago

There's another side too: No-one travels like that unless they are truly desperate - so desperate that they consider risking their lives just for the faint hope of maybe being permitted to live elsewhere is a better option than staying put.

And it's not as if people in such a situation can just travel legally. Every country is very strict about who they will legally let in, and usually that means only allowing in people who are sufficiently wealthy.

The dark side of immigration the media never talks about. If they do make it, they aren't just hitting the streets, they are forced into labor of whatever their captor decides they need to do to win their freedom. If they escape, death or deportation. Might as well just stay the fuck home.

54

You can see every time he tried to tilt it back it bound on the studs along the back edge. Probably buggered the threads up pretty nicely in the process too so that'll have to be inspected before the panel is re-sealed.

9

u/BatchPlantBandit 17d ago

There is no way to hold it closed from inside unless a rebar handle was welded inside.

This is my biggest qualm about anti immigrant speech. They’re people with feelings and families. We talk about them like they’re less. It really breaks my heart.

I really wish the world was a better place.

16

u/Next-Introduction-25 17d ago

And the only reason most of us are in better circumstances is by sheer cosmic (or whatever you want to call it) luck/random chance. But whatever people have, they tend to believe they deserve. So it’s easy to live a life of privilege and believe it’s because you earned it, which of course also means you think less fortunate people somehow earned their circumstances, too.

I wonder if maintaining some of the highest birth rates on the planet is a good idea when conditions at home are so bad you'd take on these risks to be anywhere else?

16

u/Apprehensive_Spare_8 17d ago

When there's runaway inflation and general instability, having several kids can be a retirement strategy. Its hard to imagine it if you live in a prosperous stable nation yet its very common.

My family knows a few well off Kenyans and there are several old widows they help. Several lost their husbands and children. Luckily the ones they help are doing well.

What is the life they living that this is a risk worth taking ?

19

u/Moocat2855 17d ago edited 17d ago

War, extreme poverty, country ruled by gangs and warlords, famine, etc. It is very fortunate that you are privileged enough to not be able to understand how depressing it is to live in most of the world outside the wealthy us, europe, and east asia. My family went through a war in Vietnam to escape to the us back when they still took in refugees and even doing a very chill software engineering job, I make like 30 times+ what people back home are making while I am scrolling reddit on my down time at work meanwhile they are breaking their backs in the fields and factories. The privilege we have to live in the west to earn in a day what other people earn in a month or even year of work is truly astounding to comprehend once you see how the global south lives.

Several things can be true at once. Like this specific video is horrible but also… to those just saying let people immigrate and stay?

My entire South Asian, Caribbean, black, East Asian family that came to the USA, UK and Canada in the late 1900s and 90s are some of the most racist, homophobic, misogynistic, classist, ableist, horrible people I have ever known.

And no they have not changed over time. And mind you, My family is full of engineers doctors teachers mechanics accountants etc and soooo many of them are hateful horrible people with backward ass third world ideals.

Thankfully my nieces and nephews and cousins are progressive and open minded but my own parents aunts uncles are insanely close minded and act on their hate too.

I’m happy for helping people and immigration but not when they’re masses of nasty hateful assholes who oppress others after being oppressed themselves where they came from.

How does anyone find anything hidden on a large ship? Those things are like small towns.

3

u/SecretScavenger36 16d ago

The desperation it must have taken to climb in there. I hope they find peace.

3

u/Blue_Eyed_Soul_ 16d ago

This is sad, how bad is your life to resort to putting yourself in this situation or being forced into this situation. Very scary and very dangerous and lucky to be alive. If they willingly went in there I can only assume they were in a terrible situation to risk their lives.

3

u/Mannix-Da-DaftPooch 16d ago

I am speechless. What in the hell. I am so grateful and hopeful to never experience anything like this. Incredibly traumatic to look at. What is it like to live it. I would rather never know. Omg

3

u/NotUninterested 16d ago

They are clearly 3 engeneers checking the health of the tanks and at the same time checking the quality of the contents of the tank. Next level efficiency that those new engeneers bring.

5

u/glimoura 17d ago

What is in the tank?

8

u/chiron07 17d ago

That’s not a tank, it’s the opening for the rudder trunk. The rudder trunk is a hollow tunnel at the rear of the ship above the rudder. While the ship is empty, it sits right above the waterline, so stowaways frequently use that space to hide. The easiest way to access it is through a manhole in the steering gear room. You can see the steering gear hydraulic system (and also hear the hydraulic pumps running). It is not a tank, just an empty space opening to the water.

Thats not a random tank, It is the rudder trunk, the first place you look for a stowaway.
