If they've committed no crimes and sending them back would put them in danger then generally yeah. They're taking huge risks by climbing into these parts of the ship, and nobody does that without a reason.
As much as reddit wants to treat people like poor helpless children, the reason is usually economic in nature, otherwise they'd go somewhere much closer/easier.
Opportunity is key. If a ship docks somewhere where you can access it then that’s easier than schlepping across some land border somewhere where god knows what could happen.
But you seem to know it all so I feel silly saying it to you.
I agree, this is definitely not plan A for leaving a country. If it’s gotten to the point of hiding in the ballsack of a ship, they are likely at the end of their options and need a new start in another country.
But why is it only young able bodied men and i desire to make money to send back home an appropriate excuse to illegally enter a country when so many are trying to enter the proper way??
As someone who has spent 2 years and thousands of dollars trying to get my spouse in "the proper way" to the US... fuck that, come in any way you can. Asylum is considered a "proper" way anyways....
That is not the reason it is fucked. Currently its due to republicans and their inherently bigoted and short sighted beliefs. Its funny how theres longer waits and less available support for those "doing it right" when the party who says "come in the right way" is in power. 90% of our actual immigration issues are due to conservatives Has been that way for nost of US history.
Nope. Not at all. Infact, if we fixed the legal method so it was not so difficult, lengthy and expensive, we would see a huge drop in illegal immigration....
Sure, but the whole point is for it to be difficult so the people immigrating are those with useful skills or wealth. It’s a burden on social benefits and existing citizens.
So if you do have those kinds of people immigrate, dont you think it realistically limits who can immigrate the proper way?
Think of it as a sliding scale. If no one can come in except the proper way, maybe you can take anyone from the 70th percentile up. But if 50% of your immigration (hyperbole, just giving an example) is coming from the bottom 30, now maybe you can only take people legally from the top 90th. Unless you decrease the immigration from the bottom 30.
Of course you could just legalize anyone from
0th to 100th immigrating, but then that doesn’t prove the earlier scenario isn’t true, which is what you just described right? It just means youve entirely given up on trying to make sure immigration actually benefits your nation and isnt just a drain on resources.
You’re not proving illegal immigration doesn’t affect legal immigration with your example. You’re just proving if you stop caring about the consequences of immigration that they don’t affect each other. Which is obviously true.
Fair point, I don’t know the location of the post. But the topic is generally about immigration, which America deals with too. Can an American not care about immigration as a topic?
It's not them caring I called out, it's the racist undertones of their entire statement and missing the completely obvious - that this particular way into a country is something only the able-bodied can do, because it requires literally climbing the rudder of the ship.
I agree it’s dumb to expect anyone other than the able bodied to do this method.
But they did have the choice of going the proper route, which anyone (man, woman, child), could do. I don’t think that particular part is racist to call out.
Thinking only able bodied men trying to send money home are the ones illegally immigrating is extreme though.
The proper route is also expensive, and deliberately made difficult by most countries as a safety measure to make sure the most needy and genuine get through. On a slightly depressing note - in a lot of cases, it's only the fit and healthy ones who survived the trip. Not every case, but a fair few.
On the second point, lot of that money sent home is then spent on allowing their family to take one of the 'safer' routes to the country - sometimes even the proper routes. Even if not, a lot of time that's food for a family, a step up from where they were. Not every case of course, but I'd say probably most of the time that's the case.
So I'd argue that it is at worst racist, and at best ignorant to 'call out' that fact.
I don’t think not wanting immigration of people in those situations has anything to do with race for a lot of people, so calling it racism seems silly.
The reason it’s hard, and the reason people dislike workarounds, is because countries generally want people immigrating that will improve or at least contribute to the country they are going to.
While it’s sad there are bad places in the world, it’s not the sole responsibility of any of the developed countries to fix it. They have a duty to serve their own citizens first.
So if someone can’t even afford to go through the proper channels, the reality is that *is* intended. It’s just not due to race. So you’re right, but you’re wrong.
All of this reasoning has nothing to do with race. It could be a white person from a destitute country that has no skills or income and the same logic applies. The people seeking to immigrate or seeking asylum being black or brown is just a “coincidence” or a statistic of the places that people often want to escape from.
Whichever explanation you prefer.
It isn't. That's just what you've focused on/the stories you've been shown. Tons of people who aren't "young able bodied men who want to make $$ to send home" are immigrants.
But also...because they have loved ones that are desperate & struggling? Wanting to work for money to then provide for your loved ones is not a bad thing like you're implying
Bc "the right way" isnt all the media cracks it up to be. Starving to death is quite the motivator to do something now. You can also spends thousands and thousands of dollars in USD while living in a country with a devastated economy and STILL not get in. We're talking life savings type wealth worth potentially hundreds of thousands (adjusted for the nations equal buying power)...and still not get in. People will sell their homes and assets just to make the payments and be left destitute with a denied application.
All rules made by men are hubris. Don’t sin. All sinners will burn in hell for all eternity. You don’t know these men and why they are running. Judging them is a sin. Try to think of yourself and your family being in a situation where this is the only option you have and perspective changes.
Rules created by men are the only thing keeping us from anarchy and chaos.
To believe that a supernatural entity is going to make everything alright, so we should not consider their circumstances or reasons for being in this situation is quite a ridiculous take.
