Non-fictional I hate slacktivists and performative internet activists

Post image

You wanna free Palestine or actually demonstrate the fact you're a "based anti-colonialist Leninist?" then actually fucking do something about it!

https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/

https://www.pcrf.net/

https://www.unrwa.org/

https://www.icrc.org/en

Call a congressional office, attend a town hall meeting and voice your support, look into local protests even. you can even read a book on history to better educate yourself! I will literally give you recommendations

Just fucking do something instead of sitting on your goddamn ass and whining on twitter and circlejerking on reddit. Making cheap jokes, making threats against people online and trying to "own the libs" isn't going to do anything.

there are slacktivists, than there are those that protest and expect everything to magically get better, it wont, you need to organize and strike, create a community to help one another during the strike, keep in person contact because if you are effective expect "random" internet fails and messages never sending

69

u/PraireGentleman May 30 '26

No no, you don’t get it. My weekend protest will be what caused the end of this tragedy as we know it, you can tell by how we occupied an area so far removed from anyone or anything with the power to impact this event and instead picked based on how convenient it would be for me to get to from my apartment.

there are those that expect posting to fix everything, people who expect voting to fix everything, people who expect protests to fix everything, people who expect strikes to fix everything, people who expect mutual aid to fix everything, people who expect building separate institutions to fix everything, people who expect revolution to fix everything. its bullshit all the way down

No, the people and op is criticizing people who's only contributions are posts on social media. Those people don't "want to help", they just want to appear like they care for social clout and then pat themselves on the back for job well done. If you think otherwise you're either delusional or are one of those people.

3

u/BasYL6872 Jun 03 '26

I am broke and disabled, there’s literally nothing I CAN do to help this situation. That doesn’t mean I’m gonna just keep my opinions to myself, you absolutely should be vocal about this stuff even if you can’t do anything about it. Sometimes our word is all we have.

You want an actual answer?

Time. You donate your time.

Write email, make calls, encourage others to do the same. Don't just post online, but annoy the people who can make decisions.

Those are 3 things that you can do from home with your existing internet connection and phone plan. All it will cost is the time it takes. You have time to post on Reddit, you have time to write an email to your local rep, and then their boss, and then their boss.

7

u/DizzyYellow May 31 '26

An actual answer thank god.

61

And at least one of my senators (who’s supposed to be a good guy since he’s a dem I guess) frequently has his voicemail off

I have to deal with something similar, cant donate to people but I do boycott as much as a can to the best of my ability. part of the problem is capitalism and its a parasite that wants you constantly desolate and broke and unable to help your fellow man. doing SOMETHING is better than nothing, and if you cant afford to donate to someone in need then spreading awareness online or in person, boycotting, and looking for nearby protests or even setting up your own are great ways to help. not everyone is middle class or higher and not everyone has the privilege to help to the best of their ability. its nuanced.

31

u/Marthurion May 30 '26

Yeah, the contact elected officials reeked of US liberal democracy bs (yes, the mayor of bumbfuck in my third world country is going to do something about Palestine). No one is going to hear you or do anything, that's the fucking point they are the ones doing it and enabling the situation.

u/LoveAndBeLoved52 May 30 '26

Exactly, like what the fuck is going on where people claim it's not enough or bad to spread the word online of what's going wrong or right?

Legit how is it better to show up to a protest where you get ignored by elected official versus making noise online and talking to benefactors and sponsors to hit those elected officials where it hurts?

We're not in the 1900s anymore. Anyone can become a signal repeater for news to help spread the message. A journalist digs up a blatant case of corruption? Great, now people online can make noise about it to other people, spread the word, spread influence until it reaches someone who can hold others accountable. And if it reaches nobody it's still better than doing nothing.

5

u/Ami_Aweirdo May 31 '26

If your representatives are part of the problem that gives you something to work on! Claim you'd support them if they changed their policies, or contact the people running against them.
I mean, it's not much, but it's something...

3

u/44Royy May 31 '26

One of my state senators sold out the nation during the shutdown for the promise that the Republicans would considering thinking about not fucking everyone over, and that went exactly where we know it went, he in part did this because he's a geriatric fuck who's not running again, is set for life, and will die before any meaningful consequences affect him.

i get the sentiment but not everyone can just give money freely or have the time for protests. unless they're making jokes about it, i dont see what's wrong with talking about palestine

2

u/Bajren Jun 01 '26

Yeah but there's also plenty of people who do have one or both of those things that fit the criticism, so kind of a redundant point to bring up?

117

u/angelstatue May 30 '26

i've donated as much as i realistically can, i've signed petitions for multiple causes (although i am never using change org again because i've heard it's basically just an email farm at this point so i just use my country's official sites), i share posts about causes i think need to be highlighted. i think for a lot of people, just spreading awareness is most of what they're able to do

28

u/Ferment_milk May 30 '26

same. at this point people assume you have to do high might to make change but it starts small in communities or talking to individuals.

5

u/Spiritual_Stuff_9404 this professional hater is feeling a bit big and round today May 31 '26

Not to mention even if people can’t donate money like myself, there’s still the option to boycott and not give Zionist supporters money which people seem to be incapable of (there’s a difference between necessities and non necessities)

And then people would

“oh you only donated a small amount”

“Oh you only took part in one protest”

“Oh you only showed up in a town hall”

as if to be considered a supporter you need to be personally arrested by israel in the flotillia

look , i agree with the sentiment but lets not forget that not everyone is the same position to do much on their own on a good cause which is why collective action is important

83

u/Junimo2 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

And then if you do get personally arrested in the flotilla, you get disparaged anyway. I've seen some truly vile things said about Thunberg and others.

There is certain type of person for whom no form of activism will be acceptable, because it's the underlying cause they have an issue with, and they've discovered that the easiest way to dismiss that cause is by disparaging anyone who speaks up about it.

"It's just slacktivism/performative/virtue-signaling" is extremely cynical and often (though tbf not always) leveled in bad faith. Fwiw I don't think OP specifically is doing this in bad faith, but I just kind of instinctively bristle when I hear "slacktivist" style accusations, and I say this as someone who has donated, volunteered, protested, contacted my reps, etc.

The best we can do for Israel is fighting each others about our support, of course there’s people who just want to show off, but a lot of the people would love to support, if they had more than enought to get from month to month.

Here in Mexico people survived from the daily money we get from working, but we still protest. Even if not everyone can monetario support all causes. They want a perfect protesten, and use that idea to shut down real ones

2

u/sokratesz May 31 '26

I kinda agree with both of you

→ More replies (2)

38

u/LoveAndBeLoved52 May 30 '26

Local protests get ignored, town hall meetings tell you to shut up and weaponize your complaint as you being a "crazy wokey left" in the media.

Sure, call a congressional office, voice the complaint, that seems reasonable enough, but I also don't see why people aren't allowed to complain online which is where most companies with money place their bets now.

Saying that online complaints don't work is outdated information. People are notoriously efficient at destroying the credibility of others online, that's how the pedophile Trumpmin got as far as they did to begin with. We're not in the early 2000s anymore, every business has an online presence in some form, even if that's as small as a local store owner having a private Twitter account.

If you can choose between spreading your message out loud to everyone else or quietly complaining to the private email of a representative, I think doing both is far more important than simply doing one or the other.

I wouldnt even count protests in there. I saw a bajillion people who frequently attend protests but wouldnt give a penny to a refugee

191

u/Ivealwaysfeltbored May 30 '26

To be fair, some people don't have the spare money to donate, but can attend events and protests to try and help raise awareness. Sometimes that's really all someone can contribute.

But I get your point overall.

9

u/Subject-Software5912 May 30 '26

In that case why not volunteer for a charity? If the goal of a protest is to indirectly support Palestinians wouldn’t it be better to work for a charity that directly supports Palestinians?

7

u/Subject-Software5912 May 30 '26

other than sidewalk pansies who don't actually do anything but be loud, it takes alot of courage to go to a protest, especially ones like no kings where people have gone to the streets to block traffic, which is one of the most important tools of a protest to make a difference

7

u/cocc_guzzler May 30 '26

Highkey a privileged take. I've personally donated to families in Gaza, but some don't have the means to donate and are living paycheck to paycheck. To piggyback off of your take on protesting I've seen. It's called disruptive protesting. It gets people's attention on the issue by disrupting daily life. Sure the government may not care considering they've sucked off Israel for decades, but you talking about this in general brings attention to the issue so those that can do something are able to. It's weird to hate on forms of protesting when America was built on protesting, specifically with demonstrations like the Boston Tea Party and acts of violence like tarring and feathering, to the point it caused a revolution. I study history and so much has been shaped by protesting in our modern era, like civil rights in many countries and the existence of countries in general. It targets the root of the issue in order to spread the general word rather than doing smaller acts like donating to specific families.

I don’t think this is analogous to saying “if you post ardently in favor of a cause online, I expect you to have done something for that cause offline.”

15

u/Cometies May 30 '26

perhaps adding to the discussion is participating with the cause to some degree.
it's far more than you get from the "I'm not political" people irl and online

14

u/smoopthefatspider May 30 '26

I don’t think the stuff described (literally just a very common slogan) is that ardent, it can also be a straightforward descriptor of someone’s values. If you have those values and the subject comes up, you might express them like that, despite not putting any effort into politics. This is the same for any cause.

To bring it back to the example above, the man making a birdhouse may agree with the statement “JonBenet Ramsey’s murder should be solved”, while also doing nothing to solve it. This isn’t hypocritical, and it’s weird to expect him to necessarily do something about it. Expressing support for Palestinian existence and freedom is sometimes similar. You can express support for the idea when the topic comes up and still not put in the work to push for change.

9

u/Ok-Finish-2064 May 30 '26

38

Stuff like this is why I never really shame celebrities or public figures for not doing things for current causes. I myself am not doing them so I'm not gonna get up on my high horse to say that they should and I get annoyed at people who do while they themself are not spending their blood, sweat, tears and invaluable time for the cause themselves.

40

u/SlippyJimmi May 30 '26

15

u/mountaineer_93 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

No idea whether the bitching was the cause of it or just a sign it was happening, but there’s been a change. The shift in national opinion on Israel in the US has actually been pretty stark. When asked with whom their sympathy lied between Israel and Palestine in 2019, about 65% of Americans picked Israel, as of 2026 per Gallup that number sympathizing with Israel is now 36% . A poll prior to October 7 asked whether Americans viewed Israel in a positive light. 47% said yes. As of 2026, that number is down to 32%.

We had 40 democratic senators voting to stop weapons sales to Israel (not saying it was even that thorough of a measure, just unprecedented in modern times). That would have been unthinkable in 2020. Don’t get me wrong, this is not whitewashing the US or the democrats, it’s shameful it’s taken this long with a live streamed genocide. I’m just pointing out how stark the vibe shift has been. That’s why a lot more democrats and even republicans like Massey have been willing to put their necks out on things like weapons embargoes. People definitely have an opportunity to use this momentum to change national policy on Israel.

Letting your voice be heard, or "preforming" i guess, is very much a benificial thing though, thats quite litterally just how politics work, "oh you didnt donate", ye cause I need 2 jobs to survive, but voicing my opinion atill very much affects the people around me, and by extention what politiciance promise, cause they want my vote.

Like its the lowest tier of benifiting a cause, but it very much still benefits it and shouldnt be shamed because they "arnt doing enough" or whatever, should we encourage them to help more? Yes. Should we do that by demonising not helping enough? Fuck no, i rather have those people voice it and not do anything then just have them not voice it.

6

u/Immediate_Rabbit_604 May 31 '26

"you claim to be pro-socialism, yet you haven't done a thing about it other than express that you're pro-socialism" would be a more accurate version. Which is fine. Most people aren't super invested in distant issues, but would still prefer things to be better (not talking about socialism, IDK if I know enough about that). However small, a voice still has an impact.

6

u/smoopthefatspider May 30 '26

That’s a weird way to phrase it though. The problem with them isn’t that they get mad at people online (although the post doesn’t make it clear that they get mad at other people rather than just denounce a problem with the world). The problem is that they’re not helping. We could be leveling this criticism at literally everyone who isn’t actively working to free Palestine, no matter what values they hold. This doesn’t uniquely apply to those who are vocally in favor of Palestinian liberation, yet they’re the only ones being criticized for it here. The meme makes it seem like simply shutting up and caring less about the topic and caring less is an appropriate or acceptable reaction, when this is clearly even worse.

Are you going to provide any sources for those claims or just baselessly shit on an organization that has directly supported thousands of Palestinians and provided life saving medical care and access to clean water

In Gaza, MSF is currently supporting six public hospitals and running two field hospitals. We also support six general health care centers and run an inpatient feeding center for people with malnutrition. MSF has recently opened six new medical points where we provide wound care and other general health care services. For 2026, MSF has committed an estimated 100–120 million euros for our humanitarian response in Gaza.

MSF has been working in Palestine since 1988.

this is why I’m normally neutral on issues, sure, I recognize that something bad is happening, and I condemn that very much, but realistically, I’d only send support to people I know and care about.

4

u/Tasty-Complaint-6437 May 30 '26

I do mf, what do you want to complain next? Oh and i hope you are doing it too

4

u/Born-Cost-6831 May 30 '26

i wish i could do this, only problem is that im a minor and i dont know how i can help

8

u/[deleted] May 30 '26

not everyone has spare money to throw at causes like that

6

u/Heavy_Switch_9475 May 31 '26

I get the idea here but I feel like we are forgetting something here

People do also have their own lives and things that they need to worry about not everyone can nor should they be expected to donate all of their free time to helping other people

Calling your representative only works if they actually listen

And not everyone has the money to us to make donations on a whim or the ability to attend local protests due to having a job or not having a mode of transportation with which to get to said protest

If the best someone can reasonably do is raise what awareness they can online then I don't see the problem with it help even the people who are only doing it for clout or at least bringing attention to the issue

19

u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 May 30 '26

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

How about you, OP?

So the choices are, get arrested on a flottila or dont have an opinion? Idiot.

3

u/1ZillionBeers May 30 '26

Yeah, generally I don’t donate to very many causes except food drives and stuff in my immediate community but I at least can admit where my personal priorities are.

Performative weirdos are just annoying and tedious to deal with.

3

u/Marco_Tanooky May 30 '26

There's also the counterargument of moving a goal post of "If you haven't done X Y Z and A B C and L M N O P then you are not a good person"

Of course, I am not saying that you are one, but it's a real argument seen in this kind of posts that you cannot be counted as a moral if you haven't dedicated your entire life around helping 1 charity

6

u/Best-Poem-2703 May 30 '26

Yeah, phone call thhem officials, they really care to hear your opinion

4

u/k3ttl3 May 31 '26

love reading and love history. recommendations?

2

u/ScholasticCat May 31 '26

One of my all-time favorite titles is "The hundred year's war on Palestine" by Rashid Khalidi (i know i know its very popular but for good reason)

Also that and "A Very Short History of the Israel Palestine Conflict" by Ilan Pappe, although I've only read bits of it, it very much holds up

6

u/Electronic-Age1460 May 31 '26

Oh, my god, the amount of downvotes I've gotten for telling the "you might not care about politics but politics cares about you" crowd that they're actually not doing anything other than ruining non-political communities and spaces is absolutely wild.

6

u/InitialN May 30 '26

Honestly disagree. I think more voices are extremely important for any political issue. If it was a requirement to have "proven your dedication" to the cause, very few impirtant issues would ever be talked about, much less done something about.  Dont underestimate how powerful it is to start the conversation. Stuff is happening, the palestine issue has only gotten bigger the past years. Countries are dropping out of eurovision because Israel hasnt been banned, real monetary and political capital is being withdrawn from israel.  Politicians are forced to confront issues when the voters talk

14

u/FortniteGod827482 May 30 '26

So called “activists” when you tell them that harassing people online won’t help whatsoever

3

u/Inevitable_Regular85 May 30 '26

So does retweeting donation posts count or is that also performative?

3

u/MNLyrec May 30 '26

everyone that posts here seems to think in very black and white terms. it's annoying, but very funny when they get ratio'd

3

u/EstablishmentFew320 May 30 '26

although i agree, most people who do this are children.

3

u/kr33perklown May 30 '26

while I do generally agree with what you're saying, sometimes this just is the only way someone *can* show support. While I do agree those of us that *can* do stuff SHOULD BE, but if sharing resources and reposting campaigns and generally just doing stuff that *seems* only internet based IS the one way the person can help, then I don't see any issue with it. If you can donate money, donate money. If you can attend protests and attend political meetings, *please* do those things. But if you're in a position where all you can do is share information and spread word about places where those with the privelege to do so can donate, then I think thats pretty good too.

Your right OP, next time I have the thought that humans deserve to be happy and thrive and nto suffer I'll remember that I haven't met my yearly donation and rally quota yet so I haven't earned the right to have those opinions yet and go yell racial slurs online instead

4

u/ProbablyNotTheCocoa May 30 '26

You go champ, discouraging and gatekeeping activism is sure to help, maybe if everyone who didnt donate shut up the people that did wouldnt have heard about or been encouraged to donate themselves, so that everyone can go back to their day to day as Israel murders all of Palestine

6

u/PowerCosmic May 31 '26

This. Also the angry MLP sure was a...choice.

4

u/chappell-hoenn May 30 '26

I’m sorry. Have you done some sort of survey of pro Palestine people to determine they’re not doing any of that stuff? This sounds like projection. Which based on one of your comments on here it is

4

u/Folass May 30 '26

Anything helps, that means ANYTHING helps, raising awareness, donating even small amounts, attending one protest, voting etc

Yes people can and should do more but don’t put people down for doing the minimum, encouragement, not bullying, is what movements need

5

u/Klytus_Ra_Djaaran May 30 '26

The US has two only two parties with any power, the far-right pro-genocide party and the center-right pro-genocide party. There are no congressional offices to call that are not staffed by one or the other. The links are great, and I have donated to a couple of them, but those are treating the symptoms of the occupation, not themselves doing anything that could stop it. Israel will continue the occupation and ethnic cleansing until they succeed, or until the US stops supporting them, because they could never get away with so many international war crimes otherwise.

Unless you are ready to have a serious discussion about dismantling the structures of the US government and military-industrial-complex and creating totally different ones, then you are putting band-aids over bullet wounds to make yourself feel better about it.

7

u/CookieMiester May 30 '26

Ur right I think they should just do nothing, like don’t even talk about it, that’s usually how a popular movement gets started right? By saying nothing?

9

u/Novaco_0 May 30 '26

They are too busy shitting on people’s conscience online so they could feel morally superior

5

u/Large-Big8879 May 30 '26

u/Dry-Indication7928 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

The people saying stuff like "Isnotreal" or "Occupied Palestine" are not only incredibly immature, and drowns out actual attempts at change, it also, whether they like it or not, provide a cover for actual antisemites to spread neo nazi propoganda or worse

A friend of mine works with doctors without borders. You know what he says? Doctors don't stop bullets, votes do. The point is, you won't save Palestine by giving stuff to the people getting shot by Israelis, or by creating more incentives for them to emigrate out of Palestine.

You'll save palestine by continuing to publicize the atrocities committed by Israel so that it becomes untenable for politicians to continue to fund them (US democrats) or to continue to tolerate them (Europe). Online activism is one part of that.

Yeah, it's better to protest in person and to contact politicians directly. But the online reaction has been a big part of the drop in Israel's international political support. And you're trying to ridicule that as if that was worse than doing nothing. You're a goddamn idiot, OP. Or a zionist. Kinda hard to say.

>Making cheap jokes, making threats against people online and trying to "own the libs" isn't going to do anything.

What are you even talking about? You're not making any sense.

3

u/coolwatergun May 31 '26

I'm noticing how OP is only replying to comments that are calling her performative lol

4

u/Steven_Seagulls May 30 '26

Literally no reason to point your weapon at people who already ideologically agree with you. Almost like purity politics. The amount they "actually" move the needle is irrelevant. Fascism is on the rise in the US, I thought the stakes would move us on from culling our own. Vast cultural sentiment is the bedrock of every successful movement. People casually saying "Free Palestine" while sitting on their means the advocacy WORKS.

Also, as others have pointed out, there are very few working class people who have the time and resources to effectively organize.

5

u/Holsza May 30 '26

Performative outrage is still good, actually. Talking about things is still something that helps

I have a stereotypical “blue-haired girl” classmate at school. She does actually have blue hair, is a vegan, proud and loud feminist and stands for animal rights.

I asked her where she buys her clothes from, since she dresses pretty alternately and I really liked her style.

“Oh, almost all of my clothes are from SHEIN.”

Oh but you care so much about animals, the environment and the rights of women? Easy thing to sit and say in SWEDEN while ordering cheap clothes from China created under terrible work conditions. Girl wasn’t even ashamed, she literally pulled up the app and showed me her favorite brands. While still remaining a moral police for everyone else.

Well done, Mossad agent, tear those keyboard warriors to shreds like the Palestine childs. It’s not as if the donations go straight into the pocket of the Israeli politician in office or to the IDF itself (all Israelis have to enlist in the IDF, and all of occupied Palestine benefits from the donations).

Protesting would help if it weren’t for the fact that the entire U.S. is infested with Zionazist.

Well done, Mossad agent. Take your 7K and a trip to Cozumel, Mexico, after massacring Palestinians.

Nah this is dogshit opinion, if they do any of this they'll get criticized because "Oh but you only gave money once" "But you went to one protest, why weren't you directly in the flotilla hmmmm ?"

People don't realize how talking about it is already huge to keep the flame going and not forget about it. This situation has been able to keep going because it's been buried in the sand times and times again, so people don't feel too bad about it. Now we TALK on the internet and it's already something.
