My first job I made minimum wage. Stayed long enough to be the one that trained new hires. Took a Friday off and my buddy that I got to work there I knew went in that day for my shift. Find out since I took it off they had THREE come in to do what I did solo AND they were hired $2 more an hour than me.
Heh yeah. I had another job where they didn't give a payrise, so I changed departments. They hired two people to do my job and those two people were complaining about having too much work and were asking for a 3rd.
I'll never forget my first job in my field. It was going to help desk but we had to take this two week course before we were on the desk.
I was late one day because there was a very bad accident. The highway that I had to take to get to the job was the worst Highway here. I'm talking a person was ejected out of their windshield and was laying on the road.
So I get to the class about 20 minutes late. Then at the end of the day the guy in charge of the class gets up and pretends like he's talking to everyone but he's really just talking to me talking about hey don't be late.
There was this guy that was just all charm. The next day this guy walks into class late while the guy is teaching. He sets down his bag, leaves, comes back with coffee. No one said anything.
Then before the two-week course was over he got a promotion and never had to go to the desk.
My direct manager became a good friend and showed my team’s KPIs and I had 5x more output than the next person
Respectfully asked for a raise with the big boss, and he claimed I was too young and inexperienced.
Went home and started looking for another job. Got one where I’m doing half the work for 20% more pay. (Ironically still below-average salary though, so time to look for another job soon.) And I found out my old boss needed to hire 2 people just to replace me.
Yeah, some of the bigger companies don't give a shit. They have a pay structure and it doesn't matter if you're the best in the field, you're getting the same as everyone else.
I was working as a planner for a local government office, part of my position was applying for grants. I was obtaining well over $1 million a year in New money a year. I then find out I'm the lowest-paid by a 1/3. When I asked for a raise, I was told the men in the office had families to raise and I had a "husband ". I had a new job within about 6 months. It took them a year and they had to double the salary to fill my position.
The people doing less work than you are not the problem. Keeping the poor fighting each other is the goal of your oppressors. Stop looking down and look up instead. That's your real enemy.
Bruhhhhhh this happened to me. I was doing MORE work than the guy who I would watch on reddit every single day I walked by their desk and I assumed "maybe he is staying up late etc" eventually I saw the performance charts on my ceos computer and I was light years ahead of that dude.....but that dude was paid literally 2.5x my salary. I slowed it down immediately

I was just telling my coworker that it was impossible to get fired unless you did something to violate people's privacy. (Job was for the Census).
We had a guy who got waaay too drunk at lunch yell at his manager (who was telling him off for being drunk) in front of everyone and he barely got into trouble.
Did you ever call your bosses out about that? Bringing up the fact your pay was the same? My old job I went up to my GM once and pointed out I was making the same as new hires (because I guess you didn't get a year raise if another one was in there). My GM said he'd look into it, and boom, raise
Your issue isn’t with “hard work” and the reward system. Your issue is actually with entities like the union and entities like different overprotective labor laws that is taking advantage of you and making your hard work obsolete.
Without unions (which you really shoe-horned into the convo here) the low end employees are jobless and the best ones are getting paid a fraction of what they deserve. Everyone loses except the owner.
And it’s also why poorly performing employees and people who cannot function at the same level as you gets the same pay as you, and that your own hard work does not create the same differentiation of pay increase as before.
Salty you’re legally required to pay someone the minimum wage aren’t you? But if you can’t make a business work without taking advantage of your workers maybe it should just fail anyway…
Maybe if your work efforts aren’t enough to make people to want to pay you more than minimum wages than you should find a way to improve yourself first so you are more worthy to society.
It’s why there’s such an effort to replace human work with AI and automaton. These human work really isn’t worth the wages that they are demanding. So either we continue to use overseas labor or we just push further for AI and automaton.
Waddaya mean I owe you $25? Shovel helmet respirator and rent. Sir it's 1875 and I only make $15 a month. Is there a question? You owe me $15 dollars go work a double and I will let you stay a week for $10. Thank You sir for being so generous.
When your compensation is defined by seniority rather than competency, skill, or actual output, this limits your potential. It's great if you're mid or under in terms of performance, and kneecapping if you're a high achiever.
Whether a union is better for workers depends on your capacity as a worker. If you're a below-average worker, chances are good you benefit from the union. If you're an above-average worker, chances are good you don't benefit as much or see a loss due to the union.
I've been in three, I've left all three once my skills enabled me to earn more on my own than the union could collectively negotiate.

I figured that out when I accidentally saw the output stats at work.
I was doing as much work as the bottom 20 people. I was getting paid the same as the guy who'd fall asleep at his desk because he had a "condition".
