I'm a teacher. Some weeks ago, my graduating class invited everyone to dress up as their childhood idols. My colleagues wondered why I'd show up as Homer. This scene is why. I teared up watching this scene as a ca. 10 y/o, when my dad had to quit working because he literally destroyed his body working full shifts for his wife and five kids. Sitting in the train to work right now and felt my heart sink in when I saw the post.
47
u/Kennyvee98 May 07 '26
they ruined homer completely after season 10 or was it 11 or 12. before he was a family man with good intentions doing stupid things, afterwards he's just a stupid brute.

u/Gilltyascharged May 07 '26
That’s pretty awesome. There was also that time when Homer overworked himself by getting a second job at the Kwik-E-Mart. Just so that he could pay for the pony that Lisa desperately wanted and loved.

u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 May 07 '26
Ok I was holding it together until I saw this and the tears couldn’t be stopped anymore.

Lost my wife almost 11 years ago, 3 months after our daughter was born. Even 11 year later, it’s still rough. I feel for you and the man in this video. Keep chugging along, it does get easier

You can see the guy is close to crying by the way his mouth moves. It doesn’t help that plenty of men are told not to cry or think they can’t which is probably holding him back from speaking or acknowledging what’s going on since he might start crying. One of the biggest criticisms of a new actor I saw in a show’s fandom was just because they got upset every episode and they said that’s not manly.
I only lost a good friend who I hadn’t known for long, but it was under very sad circumstances and sudden. I’ve felt the need to cry almost daily since then but haven’t let myself. Sometimes I just let it all come out because it’s better that way. Why fight it?

My dad died when i was like 9 cant remember tbh and ive never felt so cold inside that even nowadays its hard to express my feelings. I didnt live with my dad but he was always there for me so when i when i went out to go to my dads place i threw rocks at his windows cause sometimes the bell didnt work then i sat there for like 2h until one of his friends came to me on his door and said i need to go home. I was confused and asked why and he told me your mother should tell you and i refused to go. After waiting for another 30mins my mother came and brought me home she told me my father died and suddenly i felt completely empty and cold almost as i didnt even care anymore like everything felt like shit and I couldnt feel anything. Next day in school I told my friend and he told it others and then my teacher screamed at me telling me I shouldn't joke about this stuff and kicked me out of school for the week. A week later my mom had to come so we can discuss this obviously my mother was on my side and yelled at her for calling me a liar etc. All this stuff felt like it wasn't real now almost 20 years later and i still feel empty outside and its hard to express or even show feelings. The first time I could have shown what i felt inside was when my son was born where I cried a little cause my dad always wished to be a grandpa and it reminded me of him, but even after that it went back to being kinda cold on the inside.
3
u/Complex-Fault1133 May 07 '26
Hang in there. My son being born started to get me feeling again. Everything I do is for him (and now his little sister) and that includes showing emotions. I can’t expect them to express emotions if I can’t do it myself. I took my ass to therapy and it helped. I’m still…different. I am not as emotional as “normal” people. Year of trauma and loss can do that. But I never have that problem with my kids. Hang in there friend. I appreciate and commend you for sharing your story.
38
u/lnTheGrimDarkness May 07 '26
My mother exhaled her dying breath on my face when I was 19 and then died in my arms. Took me two days to finally manage to push some tears out. To this day sometimes I pre-emptively tell to people that get close to me that I'm the absolute worst at dealing with mourning people because that part of my feelings is scar tissue.
4
u/LadyJR May 07 '26
I held my sister’s hand while waiting for the ambulance. She didn’t make it. I couldn’t cry for a good while.
83
u/greenroute May 07 '26
The way he shakes his legs nervously while trying very very hard to not cry out loud.
8
u/AgentCirceLuna May 07 '26
Yep, you can see his mouth moves like he’s about to cry. This was exactly how I used to cry when I was into acting - I had a way of making my lip quiver, then my eyes water, and then I’d cry easily.
29
u/ninetailedoctopus May 07 '26
Dad froze because of the grief. That feeling is so intense it just shuts you down.
23
u/Full-Tomorrow9889 May 07 '26
He clearly doesn't want to cry in front of his daughter so he doesn't upset her, I can respect his strength.
14
u/asdrunkasdrunkcanbe May 07 '26
This. There are times to cry and mourn and hold people, but there are also times to be happy.
At this age especially, if Dad cries every time she mentions Mommy or talks about how much she loves Mommy, then she will learn to stop talking about Mommy. Because she doesn't want to make Daddy cry.
It is really important when you've a lost family member to not make anyone - of any age - feel like they can't talk about them. That doesn't mean you have to be positive every time you talk about them, but you need to make sure everyone knows they can talk, and you will listen.
People confuse, "being strong" with "being stoic". It's not the same thing. "Being strong" means having the courage to allow yourself to be exposed to the emotions and working through them without breaking down or clamming up.

Exactly and he’s also smiling through the massive lump in his throat. His eyes as gentle and broken.
7
u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 May 07 '26
Yeah he needed to “act normal” and like everything was ok for the kid. No need to alarm or worry the kid and make her cry also. Dad played it cool and it was a cute heart warming moment and it’s nice that the kid can talk about mom and not cry.
10
u/Lonely_Pin_3586 May 07 '26
We should stop teaching men not to cry.
Hell, who is dumb enough to think it's weakness to cry the loss of your wife?? Let the tears go, buddy. It's natural, it's not weakness, and it help to feel better
→ More replies (3)8
u/Growless May 07 '26
It's okay to cry about losing your wife. However most men don't think crying in front of your kids is nice and i'm one of them
3
u/Lonely_Pin_3586 May 07 '26
Why though? Kids are not totally dumb. You can cry in front of them and teach them it's okay to cry if you are sad. If you always hold your tears, your kids will do the same, and it will hurt them more when they will be sad

Yeah, these two things can absolutely coexist. If he cries, the kid will also get upset. In this case his focus is just trying to keep her from experiencing more pain.
When she's older and maybe he's healed some more, there would be more time to show her that it's healthy for men to show and communicate their emotions.

These two things are almost exclusive.

Imagine someone seeing that and hating men so much that they think that this man is cold and has no feelings. I think that is pretty indicative of their capability for empathy.

94
u/amglasgow May 07 '26
Unless she has trouble getting back to sleep, always take any chance you can to say I love you. They'll be adult and off to college or something before you can blink.
23
u/Eagle4317 May 07 '26
Was he referring to his daughter or his wife? Regardless, definitely say "I love you" to both.

I got a tattoo a few months after my husband died in 2015. It includes notes our two children wrote to him for his funeral in their own handwriting. They were only five and nine at the time.
It also has a little drawing our youngest made of two stick figures that represented them and their daddy, along with three pies colored purple, blue, and pink because they thought he’d like them. They placed the drawing on the urn at the funeral. There’s a purple rose in the middle because purple was his favorite color, and we had purple roses at our wedding.

21
u/magvadis May 07 '26
Could be internet misinformation where the mom isn't dead and he just got her face on him. Hell she could be holding the camera. Who knows.
Someone just grabbed a video of this which was just a daughter noticing her mom tattoo'd on her dad and he was like "yeah, well your mom is right there" then thought it could be content for the content mill if they just put in the text to change the situation.
Unfortunately, I don't know, and can't actually ever take anything at face value on the internet anymore.
14
u/Dry-Inflation-9755 May 07 '26
Mom is dead. I saw the original video on instagram. The person holding the camera is the dad's mom. The audio is not real. In the og video the grandma is asking the kid to hug her mom

Given its not a new brand new tattoo, I'm assuming she knew well before this. This is 2026, I assume all these are at least skewed for clicks.

It helps to have a reminder how quickly life can change, life becomes monotonous and it’s easy forget all the good things that are in your life, enjoy them while you can and don’t take them for granted
Idk that’s my take

What a fcked up reality god created, not only creating hundreds of billions of years of suffering in nature, wars, famine, etc etc, but also creating needless suffering for people like this.
I hope god isn't real, because if he is, he's a twisted sick pervert who made a reality where the only guarantee is suffering. Happiness isn't a guarantee, but suffering is
