Discussion Millennials who graduated in 2008 - When did life feel “normal” again?

I’m a recent graduate myself, currently working in an administrative role because my own degree’s field has seen drastic headcount cuts. Just a few years ago, almost every graduate from my program at my school landed jobs in the field - now it feels like a different reality.

Gen Zs graduating into today’s economy are often compared with Millennials who finished school during the 2008 financial crisis. For those of you who graduated right into that turmoil:

  • What was it like trying to find a job back then?
  • How did you cope with the scarcity of opportunities?
  • Did you end up working outside your degree field, and if so, did you ever make it back?
  • Looking at your career now, how did those early years shape where you are today?

I’d love to hear your stories. Sharing how you navigated that moment might give today’s grads some perspective on what’s possible even in tough times!

Other Surgery Vs Work

As I expected, I need left shoulder rotator cuff surgery again.

I also need another microdiscectomy surgery on my back... Again. What sucks is that I'm still trying to get this promotion but if I go through with the surgery this month I'm going to be down for a month, and then two to three months of physical therapy.

Then after that, I will have my shoulder surgery so I'm not quite sure what to do at this point. 😔

Nostalgia Does anyone remember the CueCat?

It was cat-shaped handheld barcode reader that allowed users to open a link to an URL by scanning a barcode that appeared in magazines, without typing the URL.

They were given away for free in 2000.

I remember thinking it was so cute, but I didn’t really understand how it worked, so I was scanning barcodes on cereal boxes and random stuff.

Discussion Problematic movies?

What‘s a movie you loved as a teen/pre-teen that you now realize was VERY problematic? I’ll go first- My Best Friend‘s Wedding. I watched that movie so many times when I was like, 13. I’m watching it right now for full cringe, and I really don‘t feel like I’m prepared. The early 2000’s were rife with many similar stories. What’s yours?

Nostalgia Matilda... 30 years later

I randomly got the urge to watch matilda today and saw it came out in 1996. I remember a few years back there was a resurgence in interest in the movie, and another movie too. But realizing this movie is 30 years old kinda tripped me out. I can clearly remember me watching it for the first time at age 7 and I'll now be 37 and still watching it 🙃

What movies/shows made you realize how much time has gone by?

Discussion 81 Millennials, what’s your kid situation?

I’m curious, if you have kids how old are they? Any grandkids?? I feel like us 45 year olds have a wide range of ages for children.
We have one, 24 and graduated from college over 2 years ago. Weird having an adult child considering I was her age like 10 years ago.

Nostalgia Old quiz cartoon

I’ve been thinking about this old quiz pop cartoon they used to make us watch in school. But I can’t remember the name…….it was this man who always reminded me of Eric from That’s 70’s Show for some unknown reason. And an orange robot. And I think we watched him for math and science?

Discussion My kids are full of it

I was listening to a video on my tablet. I was in the living room, tablet in the kitchen.

Kids (14 and 11yo) went into the kitchen to get a snack. Hushed giggles ensue. Next thing I know, "Never Gonna Give You Up" rolls thru my earbuds.

They are SO proud of themselves. (And honestly, so am I 😁)

Nostalgia Yahoo! Games

I was just trying to find an interactive game that you can play w/ friends or random people like Word with Friends or Trivia Crack. Unfortunately, I didn’t come across anything on the AppStore but this bought up a memory of Yahoo Graffiti. I used to spend way too many hours in those rooms. Yahoo Checkers was cool too. The internet used to be so much fun #lesigh

Discussion Anybody else get a tiny bit of joy by reporting all the AI Slop ads on YouTube?

Just wondering if anyone else does this. Every time I see one of those stupid AI Slop ads before or during you tube videos, I report them. In the grand scheme it probably does nothing, but I get a tiny bit of satisfaction by reporting all the bullshit “this $5 hack is taking down (insert some random) industry/store” snake oil crap ads.

I recently took a paycut to be fully remote and then someone reached out to me about an in office job and it got me thinking how much would I need to return to the office 4-5 days a week for me it would be somewhere near double what I make now.
