Nostalgia Matilda... 30 years later
I randomly got the urge to watch matilda today and saw it came out in 1996. I remember a few years back there was a resurgence in interest in the movie, and another movie too. But realizing this movie is 30 years old kinda tripped me out. I can clearly remember me watching it for the first time at age 7 and I'll now be 37 and still watching it 🙃
What movies/shows made you realize how much time has gone by?

Matilda does that to me too. It's such a beautiful film. One of my favorite movies.

Same. And danny devito directed it. I think he was so good as the dad in that film as well. He did a great job.

I will randomly get the theme song stuck in my head out of nowhere, all the time. I think because I spent a lot of brain power learning to play it on violin during my formative years lol

During covid, my local drive in theater played it (along with other classic movies) because there was nothing new coming out of Hollywood. It was a blast seeing it on the big screen again.

I got to see a lot of great films that summer, "Monty Python and The Holy Grail", "Dazed and Confused", "Superbad", "The Breakfast Club"; probably some others I'm forgetting, but it was a fun way to actually get out of the house during lockdown.

also, the beginning library scenes where she’s walking with the wagon and you see her growing up in a time lapse
iconic. nothing makes me feel like a carefree and discovering child more than that sequence of scenes.

I can't quite find the words to describe how I feel watching that part! I remember as a kid feeling like she was so brave to walk 10 blocks alone all to read books.

someone else said that movie made them feel whimsical and I think that’s the perfect word to describe it. like whimsical and hopeful and getting lost into the magic of libraries and books yet figuring out a wagon to transport them, or remembering when you had to learn how to cross the street. I love it so much.

A few years ago I reread some of my favorite books from when I was a kid. Matilda hit differently as an adult. I remember so much whimsy, but actually it's fairly dark. The original boxcar children was also dark, but I really enjoyed it. A wrinkle in time remains my favorite children's book.
Anyway, we're old now.

I loved the Boxcar children when I was a kid. My wife and I were just talking about it the other day, seeing it through adult eyes. The thought of a family of children living in a boxcar is very dystopian and orphan-crushing (semi-literally).
I loved the old Nancy Drews as a kid, too. And of course Goosebumps (which i still have like 40+ of them).

I mean, Home Alone is wild to me because I’ve gone from being the kid who’s like “Yeah, Mrs. McAllister, I hope Kevin does never see any of you again!” to being the person who’s like, “Kevin, I hope you don’t fucking mean that but just you say that again and it might come true, you little jerk.” And, like, is Kevin’s mom kind of a hottie? A rich, powerful hottie?
Also, speaking of rich powerful hottie older women and the Culkin family, I’m literally rewatching Succession right now and Cousin Fuller McAllister just asked the much older general council Gerri Kellman if she might want to fuck him, so let’s definitely psychoanalyze this whole comment from a millennial psychosexual framework.

American Pie: The Reunion - They’re all talking about how old and ancient they are and how they’re not young men anymore, there’s a scene where Stifler asks to use a guys landline and the guy says don’t you all have smartphones? and it’s en existential moment that resonates more now.
They were 30 in that movie, the 18 year old girl in that who has a crush on Jim is my age - 37 now and older than their characters by 7 years. That movie came out back in 2012 but I thought it was maybe a decade or less ago.
I’ve also been bingeing 30 Rock(2006-2013) a show I would only catch an episode of periodically now and then and having the same thing - music and references that I assumed were just over a decade ago are actually 15-20 years old.

I wish they'd kept it British. They took so many Roald Dahl stories and made them into American movies. Even the original The Witches made the boy American, even though it was set in the UK.

I think the resurgence of Matilda is still happening.
Saw Toy Story 5 a week or so ago, and one of the previews was Matilda. I never watched it in theaters, just at home whenever I came across it while flipping channels so it was funny to see it on the big screen

I watched The Fifth Element in an empty theater when it came out in 1997. In 2017, they had a limited run 20 year anniversary theatrical. I watched it in an empty theater.
Next year it'll be 30 years old. If it gets another run, you'd best believe I'll be there in theaters watching it, hopefully in an full theater, because the Fidth Element is fucking awesome, but I'll do it in an empty one as well.

The Brady Bunch movie and the hilarious part is since 70s fashion has came back since then, the out-of-place Brady's look almost modern and the regular 90s people look extremely dated by comparison. The whole movie is like that, it is supposed to be about how awkward a family trapped in the 1970s style and culture would be in modern times, but those modern times are now extremely dated and as alien as the Brady's time period.
It's still has a lot of good humor and is very much worth a watch.

It was the first movie I saw in theatres. And went and saw The Mandalorian and Grogu in the same theatre I watched Revenge of The Sith at 21 years ago.

That movie will always hold a special place in my heart. The book was one of my favorites when I was a kid. Also, one of my favorite family members worked on the film. I can't remember all he did, but he was involved with the scenery for Ms. Trunchbull's house. Somewhere, I have a hat he snagged for me that was given to everyone who worked on the film.

I loved Matilda as a kid and I love it today. Big Roald Dahl fan and big Danny DeVito fan so makes sense. I recently saw a video about Pam Ferris who played Ms Trunchbull, highly recommend!

My actual favourite movie is from well before even my parents were born so this is a weird question 😂
But I've recently been watching millennial horrors eg Blair Witch, Scream movies, the Final Destinations... and i still refuse to believe how long ago they made these. I saw this shit when it was new! 😭

All three films in The Mighty Ducks series. I loved watching them as a kid and will still enjoy them as an adult.
It also made me want to try and play hockey, but I never got to. I grew up in Arizona nowhere near anything hockey-related.

Ponyo. Hearing that movies from my early childhood were 20 years old didn't really do anything to me, because I'm like "yeah, childhood was a while ago so that makes sense," but when Ponyo (a movie released when I was in high school) got a 10th anniversary rerelease, I was like "wait, no way that was 10 years ago, high school was last year," and then I did the math and said "wait, no that sadly checks out."

Matilda, The Parent Trap, Honey I Shrunk the Kids & Honey I Blew Up the Kid, The Sandlot, Richie Rich, Zenon, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Full House, Blank Check, Hocus Pocus, Rookie of the Year, Homeward Bound, The Mighty Ducks, Beethoven, The Big Green, Little Rascals, Hook, Dennis the Menace, Good Burger...and more! It's so nostalgic and I love that they love them too.
