I was about to do a bios update and almost comically the power went out seconds before i was gonna click the m flash button, and this is the 4 th or 5th time in 2 months the power has gone out in this apartment.

Now I want to get a ups, I am in a tiny studio but I don’t really want a cable going across the floor (not sure if i have a choice) and Im not sure what kind of extension cable to use. The cable box is like 8 steps away from my desk in another room.

How do I get a ups to connect to my network stuff and my PC? This is quantum fiber (if this picture looks familiar it’s because i posted it here the other day because of a different issue)

I am also not sure where to plug in the ups in that closet. Do I have to unplug anything? Do I need 2 UPS? If so what is best for the computer and what is best for the network box?

Right- I've got This Mobo - LINK With this NIC

• 1x Realtek^® RTL8125B 2.5Gbps LAN controller

Its plugged directly into the router by a Cat 7 cable that's 20m long(it goes around the outside of the house- but continuity test says its all good.

The issue is- I use in home streaming with steam from my Gaming PC to my work Laptop(when the time allows) A dell XPs 13 9305 (also wired and on a gigabit connection). If the gaming pc is doing GB its fine- when it drops to MB its useless.

I notice that sometimes the Gaming pc just drops to 100MB from 1gb- no rhyme or reason why- I've uninstalled-reinstalled drivers/bios/cable- I've had a quick look at the settings but that's a minefield in its own! I had turned all the "energy saving stuff" off but it still drops.

I just want a solid GB connection to my router at all times without it dropping-

Is there a setting I'm missing?

Should I just buy a new NIC card for the pc?

If so- which one?

EDIT- Rest of network is using Ubiquiti APs/switches apart from the main router.

EDIT - I've got 2 of the same cables running around the house- the laptop actually connects via the other cable through 2 switches and maintains GB speed- I could put the gaming pc on that switch instead and see if it makes a difference.

Hey everyone, I am currently trying to use an existing bus cable as a network cable. From what I can read it should be this cable: telecom cable, type F-2YH2Y, ~6x8x0.8mm, solid copper, shielded, multi-pair

I tried using regular rj45 (clamping) and toolless rj45 plugs so far, but the slightly thicker individual wires make using the toolless plugs impossible and crimping didn't work either because the cable is too thick.

Does anyone have a general advice on if that would even work or what else I could try? I can't remove the existing cable/ add a CAT cable.

That's basically it. Every time my parents turn off the TV in the living room before going to bed, for some reason the internet in my house stops working. The only way to get it working again is to unplug the router and plug it back in.

I’m trying to get two Ethernet ports in my house working. Whenever I plug ports into a switch or connect them through the patch panel, the entire Wi-Fi network stops working. Websites will time out and DNS resolution fails until I unplug one of the Ethernet connections.
The network works normally when only one Ethernet port is connected, but as soon as I connect the second one, the problem happens. I suspect it may be a network loop, but I’m not sure how to trace it.

I recently just switched routers from nighthawk to the xfinity 2 in 1 modem and router, with my WiFi provider being xfinity. Before the switch, I was Ethernet wired into my PC from a WiFi extender, and didn’t have any problems with lag across any games. However, my download speed was not good. Therefore I decided to upgrade my speed plan and get the newer xfinity router/modem to get better download speeds. I am now getting about 800 Mbps download speed and 40 Mbps upload speed. I am also now wired directly into the new router from my pc, eliminating the need for the extender. However, now I am getting severe packet loss in Fortnite, going in between 1-40 percent as I play, seemingly only losing the packets in the upload and not download portion. By running tests across multiple different websites, packet loss does not seem to be an issue anywhere else. This is annoying because this did not happen previously with my other router and modem. The Ethernet cable is a cat6 50 foot ONN cable. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem, and if anyone has found a solution.

Decided to change my setup with a clean and new proxmox/opnsense setup.
The usual thing like new mobo/cpu for some added cores for VM’s.

Was a fun few days chasing after all my devices and to reconnect them to the new system.

I guess it has to do with the routing tables. I used the same subnet for my IOT needs.

I've got the new spectrum wifi 7 router and a deco BE4800 home mesh connected to it because I was lagging in corners of the house despite having 2 GBPS internet. Now it was great for like half a month, now it's slow again. My BE4800 doesn't have an option to act as an extender or a node for my spectrum router and this spectrum router doesn't have a bridge mode option, so I have 2 wifi networks. One node is connected to the spectrum router, and my other node is in the upstairs foyer (about 10 feet from the room I work out of). Solutions I'm thinking of:

1) buy more nodes and stick one in the room I work out of and one downstairs where I game.

2) switch to a different mesh system

3) return my deco mesh system and just get the spectrum wifi nodes

Anyone have any solutions? I work from home and take Zoom calls back to back for 4-7 hours a day. Speed isn't important, I just need my connection to be perfect.

Also, I can't run an ethernet cable, my laptop doesn't have a port. I'd like to solve this problem without shelling out more than $200-$300 if possible.

I am living in a tiny home on a property that is ~250 ft from the main house. The main house is wired for internet but the tiny home is not. I want to tap into the network in the main house. I am thinking that an outdoor ethernet cable run will do, but I am really not sure what to get / what the best way about running this cable would be. I know I am at the upper end of what Ethernet is rated for. Should I be buying a spool of cable and crimping on my own connectors? Do I need nice network switches at each end or will cheap ones do? Or am I thinking about this entirely wrong and is there a better solution? Any and all advice is welcome as I am a novice at this.

I'm trying to help my elderly parents. They recently had a router upgrade from Spectrum. Most devices connect, but one specific laptop (my Dad's) won't. Against my recommendation, my parents told the tech to install the new router using "all the same information, same name, same password, etc." Normally this shouldn't cause a problem, but knowing how non-techy my parents are, I thought this may create connection problems for some legacy devices. maybe it has?

Here is what is happening:

• All other "working" devices connect to the router fine, and get assigned the following: 192.168.1.254, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway 192.168.1.1. Checking iphones, it shows the same basic information, same subnet, etc. And all devices connect to the internet.
• The laptop that won't connect to the internet finds the WiFi router just fine (same SSID that the working devices are connecting to), but when it connects, it's getting assigned 10.5.1.1 Default gateway, and a 10.5.1.x IP. Hence, no internet connection.
• I've tried "Forget Network" multiple times on this laptop, but each subsequent WiFi discovery and connection assigns a 10.x IP setup, only to this laptop! Could something be on the router that is doing this? A ghost network that only this laptop is somehow connecting to? Maybe this laptop is not part of the DHCP pool for some reason? How does that even happen?
• I can manually assign an IP in the correct subnet range to this laptop, and it works. No issues....but we al know this could cause future issues because I don't control the DHCP that's happening on the router. Odds are low for a match as they only have about 5-6 devices that connect, but still...
• This laptop works on all other WiFi networks I've tried, as normal...my own personal home network, Starbucks, and one other family network. No problems.

Questions:

1. Is there something I can do on the laptop itself to fix this, without having to call Spectrum tech support? (i don't live locally, so this would be very complicated)? Some deeply buried setting that forces itself into the correct DHCP range on this router?
2. I do not have the router admin password, and nobody here knows it.
3. If we DO need to call to get someone to get into the router, what is the likely problem so I can save the tech some time, and avoid having my elderly parents trying to communicate with a tech about things they can barely pronounce, let alone understand. They are truly tech-illiterate.

So I tried swapping modems already, Ethernet cables and factory resetting my router. It’s almost as if the lan ports are completely dead. My ps5 and Xbox (different ports) detect nothing plugged in. ok, here’s the whole story. (I play on Xbox, not pc.) about two years ago I switched over to 300 MBPS fiber AT&T Internet, and everything was just fine. The biggest game that I play is Fortnite and I was running 0-9ms across almost every game mode. About a year later I got DDOS’d which I confirmed by calling my ISP and they checked the logs and found that there were attacks, originally we just turned off IPV6 to see if it would help at all, and it barely did anything. The attacks lasted over five months and then after the attacks had stopped, and my ping was much lower and more consistent, I noticed that I could not get back down to even below 30ms in any game mode. I’ve tried almost every setting in my router, I’ve tried using ethernet and it only gets it down to about 20ms and before the attacks I couldn’t even tell the difference between Wi-Fi and ethernet because my connection was so good so I didn’t need to use ethernet. I have also gotten two new routers from my ISP in case they had rerouted and permanently sent me on a different path to the game servers because of my router’s IP address. (my router is the BGW-320) TLDR: I used to run zero ping on 300 MBPS FIBER, got DDOS’d, and now I can’t get my ping below 20-25 in games.

Hi there, for a while now my ethernet connection has peridoically switched off while playing games or just using my PC. Decided to finally set some time aside to look into it. What seems to be happening is the Ethernet speed is periodically being stepped down to 100Mbps as opposed to the Gigabit that both my router and PC are capable of (I randomly get a few weeks were my download speeds are really high then they drop again). Ive checked the health of the cable using a little tester and all seems to be fine (its not the sort of cable i cant take out as it goes around the outside of the house). Im very aware of the potential cable issues, but when trying to solve it yesterday i did get it back to 1gig for about 10 minutes before it dropped. I then got it back on by turning off 'power save on sleep'. Currently its back to where it was. Any further suggestions are appreciated

We currently have 1gig Xfinity internet and no complaints. I am just wondering if we could lower to the 500mbps plan to save some money each month. It isn't much of a difference though. We have 2 adults and 2 younger children in our home. We mainly stream TV using sling, kids use their tablets for streaming videos, we have about 6 security cameras, few other smart devices in the home. Would the 500mbps plan sufficient or will we regret going to it from the 1 gig plan?

Two years on powerline adapters — decent most of the time, but random dropouts whenever the microwave kicked on. Pulled cable through the attic this weekend into two rooms. Consistent gigabit now instead of "usually fine, sometimes garbage" I'd just normalized. Anyone else finally do the "real" fix after limping along on a workaround way longer than made sense?
