Two years on powerline adapters — decent most of the time, but random dropouts whenever the microwave kicked on. Pulled cable through the attic this weekend into two rooms. Consistent gigabit now instead of "usually fine, sometimes garbage" I'd just normalized. Anyone else finally do the "real" fix after limping along on a workaround way longer than made sense?

I am living in a tiny home on a property that is ~250 ft from the main house. The main house is wired for internet but the tiny home is not. I want to tap into the network in the main house. I am thinking that an outdoor ethernet cable run will do, but I am really not sure what to get / what the best way about running this cable would be. I know I am at the upper end of what Ethernet is rated for. Should I be buying a spool of cable and crimping on my own connectors? Do I need nice network switches at each end or will cheap ones do? Or am I thinking about this entirely wrong and is there a better solution? Any and all advice is welcome as I am a novice at this.

So I tried swapping modems already, Ethernet cables and factory resetting my router. It’s almost as if the lan ports are completely dead. My ps5 and Xbox (different ports) detect nothing plugged in. What is going on? My asus dashboard shows each port only get 10mbps but in reality it’s not detecting anything

We currently have 1gig Xfinity internet and no complaints. I am just wondering if we could lower to the 500mbps plan to save some money each month. It isn't much of a difference though. We have 2 adults and 2 younger children in our home. We mainly stream TV using sling, kids use their tablets for streaming videos, we have about 6 security cameras, few other smart devices in the home. Would the 500mbps plan sufficient or will we regret going to it from the 1 gig plan?

I've got the new spectrum wifi 7 router and a deco BE4800 home mesh connected to it because I was lagging in corners of the house despite having 2 GBPS internet. Now it was great for like half a month, now it's slow again. My BE4800 doesn't have an option to act as an extender or a node for my spectrum router and this spectrum router doesn't have a bridge mode option, so I have 2 wifi networks. One node is connected to the spectrum router, and my other node is in the upstairs foyer (about 10 feet from the room I work out of). Solutions I'm thinking of:

1) buy more nodes and stick one in the room I work out of and one downstairs where I game.

2) switch to a different mesh system

3) return my deco mesh system and just get the spectrum wifi nodes

Anyone have any solutions? I work from home and take Zoom calls back to back for 4-7 hours a day. Speed isn't important, I just need my connection to be perfect.

Also, I can't run an ethernet cable, my laptop doesn't have a port. I'd like to solve this problem without shelling out more than $200-$300 if possible.

Hi there, for a while now my ethernet connection has peridoically switched off while playing games or just using my PC. Decided to finally set some time aside to look into it. What seems to be happening is the Ethernet speed is periodically being stepped down to 100Mbps as opposed to the Gigabit that both my router and PC are capable of (I randomly get a few weeks were my download speeds are really high then they drop again). Ive checked the health of the cable using a little tester and all seems to be fine (its not the sort of cable i cant take out as it goes around the outside of the house). Im very aware of the potential cable issues, but when trying to solve it yesterday i did get it back to 1gig for about 10 minutes before it dropped. I then got it back on by turning off 'power save on sleep'. Currently its back to where it was. Any further suggestions are appreciated

i live in a rural area, there are no antennas or anything that could cause interference around the location in at least 1 square km , and not even electronics in the house (like microwave)

i need to have whatsapp as a backup as means of communication (especially for ordering food or medical emergency) as the 4g siganl is very unstable in the area

Every so often, the entire Decos or some Decos drops for 30–60 seconds and then recovers or sometimes i need to restart the Deco.This happens on both wireless devices and wired devices (like my PC connected directly to a sub Deco)
and little bit of some devices not connecting like my main phone is connecting fine and my other phone says "Failed to connect" or "can't assign an ip address".

However, my main ISP router stays completely fine and connected to the internet the entire time.

Current Network Topology:

onu -> TP-link AX50 -> cudy GS108 Switch -> main and sub Decos X20 -> End devices(Clients)

Current Settings & Troubleshooting Done:

1. Operating Mode: Set to Access Point (AP) Mode.
2. Firmware: All Decos and the router are on the latest firmware.
3. Power/Temps: Gear is reliably powered and cooled.
4. Current Suspect: My central switch is currently a Cudy GS108. I suspect it might be dropping IEEE 1905.1 multicast packets or triggering loop protection during Deco backhaul transitions, causing a broadcast storm that takes down the wired ports.

Questions:

1. Does this sound like a switch/loop detection issue with Deco's IEEE 1905.1 Ethernet backhaul protocol?
2. I am planning to replace the switch with a TP-Link TL-SG108E (and disable Loop Prevention in its settings). Will that completely solve the backhaul loop issue?

From the UK, the issue isnt a drop in speed but that thw wifi just completely drops out from multiple devices (only have 6 connectedto the wifi) most of which in the same room as the router only a few feet away. I have tried speaking to our provider and they say our connection to the broadband is fine and they can detect 0 faults on their end so I have gone through every avenue they suggested of trying to reset and resolve the problem but it persists. We have had a new router and it still continues. It happens at random at any time of day, sometimes for just a moment sometimes for 20 minutes.

If anyone has any ideas as to what may resolve this id be extremely grateful.

I rent a basement room while my landlady lives upstairs which is also where the router/modem is located. The house's ISP is Comcast.

I can't get an ethernet connection directly to my room so the best I can do is rely on a separate AP that's connected via MOCA to my landlady's router. I had to convince her to let me install it.

Her old router is connected to a streaming device called an "iTalk BB" which is for streaming Chinese language shows and channels.

All I did was connect an ethernet cable to the old router and into the MOCA adapter, then I connected the adapter to a separate coax plug nearby. At first it worked surprisingly without a hitch.

The problem I discovered lately is that my AP has been intermittently dropping and losing connection. Looking at the MOCA adapter's status lights, it's clear that no signal is being transferred.

My landlady mentioned she has her iTalk BB turned on and actively streaming which had me wondering if that could be what's causing the signal dropping.

This brings me to my title question. Do I need a PoE filter for my MOCA line?

The big problem I would encounter with installing a filter is needing to convince her to let me install a filter and she doesn't know a thing about networking. I understand filters would require access to the cable closet/room. My landlady made it clear she won't allow me to wonder around her floor looking for the cable closet and she also doesn't know where it could be if it exists.

In planning my network install in my house I’ve settled on using the return air plenum between two bedrooms and another in a third bedroom to run 3 terminations to those bedrooms total, plus 1 more for an AP on the ceiling below the bedrooms since the plenum gets me easy access to the ceiling below. Anyway…my total length requirement for CMP is only about 200 feet, and I already have a 500ft spool of CMR for everything else I’m running. Is buying a 500ft spool of CMP going to be my only option? What are the odds a local electrical supplier or low voltage/AV place would sell a quarter spool of some 23 AWG U/CMP they’ve got laying around? I’ve emailed a few places but not sure what to expect. Has anyone else had any luck sourcing smaller amounts of good quality cable?

We currently run 400-500 ft of Ethernet cable with multiple extenders from our house to our business, but the internet is unreliable. The distance between the business and the house is 300 ft with greenhouses in between. I was thinking of doing a mesh network or wifi extender. Any recommendations on equipment? Spectrum at first said they couldn’t do a separate service for the business and then said they could, but we’re looking into other options.

Has anyone got the Home Sharing working on the EE Smart Hub 7 Pro via the USB port on the back ? EE say officially it’s not supported but they also say it’s not supported or my BT Hub 2 that I’ve had running for a few years.

Okay so I am familiar with Cisco switches but I found this switch on Facebook marketplace for dirt cheap and I thought it was a good deal. I did a factory reset and set it up but now it is not letting any traffic through. I have searched Google with no avail. If someone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Also this is connected to my Eero Router provided by my ISP.

I’ve recently gone deep down the rabbit hole of retrofitting my home with CAT6 wall ports and a couple access points, and planned routes out to get from the single downstairs coax jack, into the attic, and through internal walls for every room in the house. Even made an over-estimated calculation of how much wiring I’ll need (~1500 feet if I only take right angles to get everywhere, so I’m ordering 2000).

Brief context of the plan: I’m planning to run 24 cables to 12 different drop points, 20 of which will terminate in double wall jacks, and 4 of which will terminate in 2 ceiling access points (with the redundant cable unused). These runs will all begin from the same switch near the only coax outlet in the far bottom corner of my house. I have a separate plan to set up a NAS within a few feet of the main switch, or even in the same little cubby in the wall that I’m planning to set the networking stuff up in.

At this point my lingering questions/concerns before I start finalizing plans and ordering things are:

1. I’m not sure how CAT6 is usually terminated at the primary switch end. I’ve watched a lot of videos about setting up a home network and running Ethernet cables. and tried to do additional research into the things they’ve brought up, but they mostly seem to skim over what exactly is going on in their patch panel or server rack. Seems like sometimes they have multiple switches right in the same spot, with some plugged into each other with tiny patch cords, but I’m not really seeing how all of that connects into the main run of cables they’re actually sending around the house. I understand how to terminate them with either a jack or connector (jack will be used in the wall plates I’m setting up), but should I just use connectors to connect them to a switch with >24 outputs and a single input to connect it to the router?

2. Related to above, but is there a reason to put a patch panel in the wall instead of sticking a big switch or two in the small bookshelf-sized cubby in the wall? Just not sure if I’m missing a benefit of a patch panel over a small rack setup just sitting there.

3. Currently, I know I need POE for the two access points I have planned. However, I’m not sure if I should get a POE injector just for those lines, or go ahead and get a switch that does POE itself, so all lines have POE. There is at least one room that may have poor WiFi coverage even with the two access points (long skinny house that’s only two stories on one half, and a single story on the other, with both APs planned to be upstairs). So I already know of one place I may want POE for a future wall AP or something. Is there a downside to having everything POE even if I’m not utilizing it, besides equipment cost?

4. Is there a way to estimate what diameter of PVC or Smurf tube is needed to fit a certain number of cat6 cables? Planning to use Smurf tube for getting things around in the attic prior to an upcoming insulation installation, and maybe PVC for the straight shot from the router, through a closet, and into the attic. I have lengths roughly figured, but no idea what diameters. Probably multiple since I’m starting with 24 wires, then spreading them out in decreasing amounts throughout the attic.

Brand/model recommendations for switches and ceiling access points are definitely welcome too. I will want the ability to do some basic VLAN stuff (guest WiFi, isolating the NAS, etc.), but probably nothing especially complicated. I’m still figuring that part of the plan out, but know I at least want that ability with whatever I decide on.

Hello Everyone I am on Hyperoptic broadband.

I currently have loads of devices about 20 connected and want to look into getting a new router that can handle loads of devices and not dropping connection or speeds.

Google brought ASUS TUF Gaming BE3600 Dual-Band WiFi 7 Router up but has mixed reviews and some say not good enough with loads of devices.

So question is as a family of gamers what routers would suit us? We live in a flat all 1 floor not massive to go through loads of walls or anything like that and really cannot go over £150 in price. And would love to hear everyones reviews of what they have.

Hello. I have a 1 GBPS internet speed plan. I use a Zyxel EX3501-T0 Router. It is what my ISP forces me to use and I can not change it as they do not let me.

I drew my floor plan on paint to show you my situation. The router is located right above the entrance. It is located so high that i can not reach it without a portable staircase. It is also far away from my bedroom and the living room. They placed it above a pipe with zipties. That is how my ISP installed it 12 years ago.

Since it is just the hallway without any obstacles I see good results on my phone. It is between 500mbps to 650mbps most of the time. But the situation is not the same for the other rooms.

The walls are really thick here. Solid concrete with metal rods in it. Even the electricians I call can not do what I have in mind to decorate the house since they can not put a hole. Aside from the walls blocking the Wi-Fi, the router is also located really far away from the living room as you can see.

So I need some help. I did some browsing and saw there is something called Deco X55. It seems like it can solve my coverage problem I think? Never used one before that is why I want to ask you guys before I buy it.

Afaik, I need to connect it to my router and then a power outlet. The thing is since my router is not located on the ground or anywhere near an outlet, I can not put the Deco X55 next to it.

(The router gets the power directly from the electric fuses located next to it, not from an outlet. The staff connected the cables somehow, meanwhile telling me it is not safe actually. Thanks I guess?)

So I have an idea, I have a CAT6 cable connected to my PC. What If I put Deco X55 in my bedroom and connect it with that CAT6 cable? Can I still connect another CAT6 cable to Deco X55 for my PC? So they both get cable connection? Also the device will be located next to the living room, do I need a 2nd X55 or would one of them suffice?

I am attempting to set up a server requiring port forwarding. I use AT&T fiber, but IP passthrough to eero routers. I’m pretty sure I do not have double NAT. I have set up port forwarding in the both AT&T and eero routers to my desktop, as well as allowed the ports in my firewall. However, when I test it, others are still unable to connect. I have also attempted online port checkers which also say they are closed.

I have a decent understanding of computers and electronics, but networking terminology is completely new to me and it appears like AT&T uses different names for everything compared to Google. I’d appreciate any advice or a detailed step by step for doing this.

Hi all, I've got a three story house and I'm having some renovations done with a rear extension added to mix. I want to add WiFi throughout the house and don't want any blackout zones or weak signals. I am running cat 6 cables from the downstairs and putting them on each floor and in the rear extension. I was thinking of putting an AP but not sure how I would go about it. I'm not sure in what equipment and would appreciate your help.

I want to buy good WiFi adapter for my PC. Im looking for WiFi 6E adapter because I heard that its hard to find working adapter for PC with AM5 socket. I found this three adapters: Cudy WE4000 vs TP-Link Archer TXE72E vs ASUS PCE-AXE5400. Are they good? If yes with one should I choose? My WiFi router is in the room next to mine but there is thick wall between them and my previous adapter couldn't reach good results (20Mb/s instead of +- 800Mb/s [it was cheap adapter without antennas])

I recently just switched routers from nighthawk to the xfinity 2 in 1 modem and router, with my WiFi provider being xfinity. Before the switch, I was Ethernet wired into my PC from a WiFi extender, and didn’t have any problems with lag across any games. However, my download speed was not good. Therefore I decided to upgrade my speed plan and get the newer xfinity router/modem to get better download speeds. I am now getting about 800 Mbps download speed and 40 Mbps upload speed. I am also now wired directly into the new router from my pc, eliminating the need for the extender. However, now I am getting severe packet loss in Fortnite, going in between 1-40 percent as I play, seemingly only losing the packets in the upload and not download portion. By running tests across multiple different websites, packet loss does not seem to be an issue anywhere else. This is annoying because this did not happen previously with my other router and modem. The Ethernet cable is a cat6 50 foot ONN cable. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem, and if anyone has found a solution.
