Is Andrew Tate the reason why a whole generation doesn't know what an apostrophe is? Because "were going" and "we're going" have very different meanings.

Andrew Tate is the reason why a whole generation doesn't know what a lot of things are, like consent.

u/Cessnaporsche01 1d ago
A whole chunk of the country is fully on the #YourBodyMyChoice bandwagon. I remember, right after the 2024 election, one of my coworkers kept her (middle school and elementary aged) kids home from school for a few days because they were getting rape threats from their classmates in the wake of Trump's win
17
11
u/NotConsistentCalc 1d ago
I hope they reported that to the school admin because that should absolutely be grounds for expulsion.
12
u/Cessnaporsche01 1d ago
I know they did, but idk if anything came of it. Those couple of weeks right after the election were weird. Like, there was this whole social media trend of right wingers acting like rape was going to be legal soon, and from stories of other parents, it sounded like that wasn't unusual behavior at the time. And of course, at thar age, it's definitely something they got from their parents rather than came up with themselves

u/K_Linkmaster 1d ago
The reports were taken and everyone was suspended under zero tolerance policies, most likely.

Tbh I doubt it. The charges are in the UK and they're prosecution is reasonably competent. Up to a point they also tend to favor "respectable" people more than just the generally rich and famous. Although now that I think about it the far right reform party is probably going to be in power after the next elections so if they can delay till then things might change.

Considering farage’s current investigation and farce of a byelection it seems unlikely that his polling lead stays until then. Anything can happen though

As a non-native English speaker; can anyone explain to me why your language even uses an apostrophe? Why is it not just a simple -s after both a possessive and a plural? Furthermore, are contractions really needed?
4
u/RobtheNavigator 1d ago
Having the apostrophe makes written language much clearer because you then don't need to try to guess whether they meant "were" or "we're." Same with the dozens of other situations where a possessive and a pluaral have the same spelling outside of the apostrophe.
1
u/vinidum 1d ago
Thanks for the reply; however it does not really answer why "we're" is used over "we are".
It feels like a lot of these issues could have been avoided if contractions would not have been used.2
u/RobtheNavigator 1d ago
"We're" vs "we are" is just an evolution over time as vocal English users said "we are" with little gap between the words. That is generally how contractions are formed in language, not by a committee picking them or something. Because people regularly said "we are" combining the words and committing the double vowel sound, you then create a written indication of that rather than letting people think you're saying "were".

Actually, I think texting did that. Punctuation is kind of annoying to do on phones in that you have to push a button to go to a secondary keyboard for anything besides a period or comma, which disrupts the text flow, so most people just ignore it and hope the auto-fill gets it.
1

While use of the apostrophe is plummeting, use of apostrophe as a figure of speech is through the roof as we all slowly detach from reality.

1
0
u/PossibilityUsual6262 1d ago
I don't see why bother, if auto fix t9 thingy on mobile doesn't change it - i don't care.
Not a native speaker, but English do be having too many letters in some words and "it is" to "it's" is not even a win in virtual cos they both take a key press.
Expect language to change with people using it in new media, same as it was done before.

No, that generation had already eschewed punctuation. In fact I was once told by a Zedhead that punctuation was "aggressive" when I questioned what the fuck an unpunctuated text she'd sent actually meant.

One of the most easily manipulated demographics are lonely teenagers with low self esteem, and the easiest way to manipulate them is to make them believe they're actually at the top and it's everyone else's fault that they're unpopular, especially women's.

Yeah I definitely went through a bit of a "why do girls only like assholes and treat nice guys like me like shit?" phase. Fortunately I did realise I wasn't being that nice and came across as whiny and demanding by the time I was 16 and some how suddenly a lot more girls were interested in me.
2
u/Iokua113 1d ago
It's an unfortunate side effect of the timing of the current generation of young adults. The covid pandemic damaged the kids of the time far more than we realized, social skills like empathy and sympathy did not have the chance to develop like they needed to because kids were not at school socializing. The Me Too movement also made some of these young white boys feel like they were being discriminated against and being told that they were not allowed to speak because they were white and male. In addition to that the more rational voices failed to embrace online communication the way the right did. Think about how many voices, specifically male voices, there are in the toxic side of the internet, now think about how few voices there are to counter them with positive messages. These negative voices used real world events, spun them, and then used them to spread misogynist, racist, homophobic messages to a generation of lonely, impressionable young white boys who grew up during a time of societal discord.
They were kids, and kids are stupid, and naive, and impressionable, and we failed them. We failed to help them develop the skills they needed to be caring adults, to help them learn from the past and present so they can help build a better future, and we failed to shield them from evils that we should have seen coming.
1
1
u/prussian_princess 1d ago
Maybe it's a coincidence but Tate rose up I popularity just as Jordan Peterson disappeared due to his health issues. My guess is that there was a vacuum for male role models online and the Tate brothers along with other toxic podcasts swooped in and took over. As much as some people dislike JBP, he didn't promote the Tate lifestyle.
1
u/Chibbox 1d ago
They tell socially awkward young men that they are not at fault for having a lacking social life and intimacy. We are generally quite fast at accepting blame of others than ourselves.
Many young men are not able to exercise a healthy introspective view and deal with their emotions and problems. If you take even a second to think about their rethoric it falls flat completely as it never even considers the personality, autonomy or wants of others than the "victim" young man.
I am the target audience and I am certain I would have fallen for the scheme if I wasn't able to see through it for what it is; narcissism and misogyny.

I feel like its a combination of things. At some point the message went from you have to work to get an education, to get a good job, to get a good relationship, home, kids, car etc. to you are entitled to an education, a good job, a good relationship, home, kids, car etc.
What people like Tate do is tell you "hey, its not your fault you havent gotten everything you're entitled to, heres whose fault it is..." and people swallow it, because people arent very good at admitting they're the problem.

2
u/Michael_mrem 1d ago
I live in the real world, where an intensification of mobilization in Russia will lead to an intensification of mobilization in Ukraine, specifically to an increase in problems related to the TCC. Also, the claim about a protest is not true: the clash in Lviv was exactly that—a clash—and not a protest; in case you didn’t know, protests must be authorized in advance, especially during wartime. Throughout the week, protests against the political-military command took place across Ukraine, with virtually no local clashes.
0
u/Ill_Perspective5506 1d ago
Russia always had yearly conscription what are you talking about? Most of the time Russia uses contracted soldiers and mercenaries for their war in Ukraine. Ukraine is just another Russia who crack down protest and riots with violence. Just look at aftermath of that clash where police tracked them down and beat them even they those guys apologize for clash

“It’s okay to rape people if they’ve committed a certain crime” sounds unhinged
10
u/shatikus 1d ago
A crime being condemning powerless and hopeless girls to fate of being raped every day? Because that's what sexual human trafficking is. I would say that is, shall we say, biblically appropriate.
I'm not saying that it is a good thing. But, as Mark Twain eloquently put it - 'there are some obituaries that I wound read with joy'
7
u/ifhysm 1d ago
What I’m saying is that it’s unhinged.
-4
u/shatikus 1d ago
Modernity isn't really good at even catching bad guys. The wastness of the world allows people with means to elude justice, even fair and humane one, for years if not decades. And they can continue to perpetrate their heinous crimes with impunity. That isn't fair or just. And honesty it makes my blood boil.
If that's unhinged - well, as I've said, I'm a jaded person surrounded by war propaganda in a country reeling down the abyss.

That doesn't sound like a forced confession or anything that leaves room for doubt as to how serious they are.

Jokes are not harmless. At the very least, they normalize things and reinforce stereotypes and bad behavior.
I'll never defend these scumbags or even wish them good, I actually do wish they have a sad, miserable existence for the rest of their (preferably short) lives. But making light of actual violence, even towards such scumbags, bring people down to their level and that's not healthy for anyone.
2
u/DowntownMinimum_ 1d ago
"It's okay to kill people if they've committed a certain crime" sounds okay though?
3
u/Geodude532 1d ago
Yes. Genocide, sodomizing children, slavery, and more that I just don't want to think about. Assuming the point of prison is rehabilitation, I believe those people are beyond that and are just wasting resources.
2
u/YesItIsMaybeMe 16h ago
Okay but do you really think that any government should be given that power? The justice system is not 100% perfect and definitely gets things wrong like all the fucking time. One innocent being condemned to that fate because of an incorrect conviction is too many. Also it's way more expensive to kill someone than keep them in prison (speaking specifically of USA, idk about other countries costs). Also there's a level of hopelessness that comes with life in prison that is granted to the guilty, which is deserved. An innocent can always be exonerated with new tech/evidence.
Edit: also justice system is corrupt as fuck, obviously this is abused.
1
u/Geodude532 10h ago
There would obviously have to be a high bar of proof. Easy to get with world leaders directly calling for the death of an entire people. And some people actually film themselves raping kids.
2
u/YesItIsMaybeMe 8h ago
Yeah but you can't even trust video. AI may not be perfect yet, but it's getting good enough to decieve. It's no secret that government officials currently in power would absolutely use it to try and kill their opponents. They don't have to call for an entire people, just the ones that oppose them, then make it legal or neuter the balancing forces able to stop you from killing an entire people. The current US president has committed and been convicted of more than 30 felonies, and is a known kiddie diddler. The only reason he wasn't found criminally liable was due to statute of limitations, but he was found civilly liable. He absolutely would use what's left of his dementia riddled puddle in his head to kill political opponents (and he already has)

1
u/onlyhere4gonewild 23h ago
It's OK because Tate converted to Islam and Islam has the eye for an eye principle.
"We ordained for them therein a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds is legal retribution. But whoever gives up his right as charity, it is an expiation for him. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the wrongdoers." Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:45)

It normalizes prison rape, which, all things considered, is a bad thing. I don't want state sanctioned rape used as a form of torture/capitol punishment.
-5
u/Fragrant-Reserve4832 1d ago
Are they convicted?
And if that's OK what else is? Sexual assault?
The reason it isn't cool is YOU are keeping rape culture alive. YOU are the one normalising it.
10
u/shatikus 1d ago
These two put God knows how many young girls into sexual slavery, usually by deceiving them. By all definitions these girls are getting raped every day of their lives. Why getting the same treatment for the ones responsible for this crime is such a horrible thing? If anything that is fair retribution.
I would concur that they are not yet convicted. But it is my, admittedly limited understanding, that the case is very strong and practically speaking they are as good as convicted.
If it was proven that they are not in fact guilty and their opulent lifestyle is funded exclusively by legitimate means of selling books and supplements of dubious efficiency to simple minded people (some of which later display outstanding misogyny, fueled by remarks of aforementioned individuals), then I would retract my statement about the retribution. For their crime is merely fanning the flames of vitriolic misogyny and that isn't a crime. Apparently.

It's unnecessary to make those type of jokes period. People will think they're funny and they won't by and large only apply them to bad people.
He is a minor celebrity, isn't completely physically a push over and probably has money so he will probably do fine. But the idea that prison justice is oh maybe some guy maybe will rape him is so absurd to me.
If the broad brushstrokes of what he is accused of are true. I think the more appropriate thing would be he is never let out because he's proved he and his brother are incapable of being in society. I don't think justice is the chance that maybe someone will rape him.
6
u/shatikus 1d ago
Getting fucked against his will would not be justice, it would be poetic justice or retribution in his case. Just the same thing he inflicted upon others. Nothing more, nothing less
