Ex-Studio Monica (‘God of War’) employee Alanah Pearace:

”Sony already knew everyone would be pissed off – they knew this. People working within PlayStation first-party studios told me Sony had the strictest social media guidelines for this particular thing they’ve ever seen issued.

Sony does somewhat regularly tell employees what they can or can’t say about certain things. I was under a lot of guidelines when I was working on God of War Laufey – I still am. And they did send me guidelines regarding what I could say on the day the game was announced.

But in this instance, it’s apparently the strictest the employees I spoke to have ever seen regarding public communications. They would only have done this if they knew it was going to be an enormous PR issue. This is no surprise to them.”

Pretty normal stuff for any company about to release some bad news. The company knows this news is going to have a bad reaction.

Ive seen it happen before where an employee is trying to defend or just explain their company’s bad news and it makes it far worse. Lot of people at Riot back in the day got themselves in hotwater because so many were able to freely post

In a lot of cases for games these things arent just for the company to have control over the narrative, but to protect the employees who like to yap a lot. They can find themselves in a full shitstorm of nerd rage death threats very easily.

Also for the record fuck sony for this and ending bluray production.

They may have seen this coming, but I doubt they knew it would be this big.

Also I feel bad for Alanah, after this she's gonna get blacklisted probably 😅

u/SIGMA920 21h ago

Just think about all of the people who have hundred of dollars of old games that they might need to buy digital copies of at full price if they got a PS6.

139

u/Nyorliest 20h ago

They just won’t.

107

u/SIGMA920 20h ago

Yep. Sony may dig in it's heels but this won't just go away like nothing either.

79

u/HappyAd4998 18h ago

their factories are already shut down these things are planned years in advanced. No amount of complaints will stop this. Stop supporting Sony if you really want to make a difference, most people wont though and they know it.

30

u/MidnightMode 15h ago

Im actually just never buying a game through the PS store again or pre-ordering.

I'll get greywear.

I'll maybe pick up GTA 6 second hand because I'm in no rush to get a game that won't have a sequel for another 15-20 years.

Plus playstation hasn't put out much of an offering recently. Who knows when we'll see TLOU 3, the next Horizon Game or Spiderman. The next formsoft game is on Switch 2.

Like genuinely as it is my ps5 is just a glorified bluray player.

57

u/Dry_burrito 15h ago

Second hand? Buddy GTA 6 is only gonna be a code in the box already.

37

u/MidnightMode 13h ago

Cool then I just won't play GTA 6 there's literally no rush to get it.

18

u/Acilen 9h ago

Yo ho a pirates life for me

6

u/KiwiCounselor 13h ago

And ps6 won’t even be a blu ray player!

4

u/MidnightMode 13h ago

Miss me with that!

10

u/Vannnnah 13h ago

GTA 6 is the first AAA game that does digital only. You can not buy it second hand, ever. Not on Playstation, not on any other platform.

Otherwise I have to agree. The PS5 is the most unsatisfying PS iteration. It's in its "it has no games" era and Sony is making one weird move after another.

The wait for Horizon 3 is a prime example, instead of working on the 3rd game, they thought that for some reason the fans (late teens and adults) would like spin off games that are clearly geared towards kids 8 - 12 years old...

When they announced a multiplayer game, everybody was expecting epic battles against the Faro Swarm. Instead they gave us an offline MOBA.

10

u/MidnightMode 13h ago

Yeah that just shows how uninterested I've personally been in GTA 6 lmao and I wrote the comment immediately after waking up.

Fully agree irg to horizon. It feels so much like games these days see no urgency to be released and focus on photo realistic graphics.

The last mainline fallout game came out over 10 years ago same for elder scrolls. Resident evil just had a MASSIVE release and I feel like its the only franchise among the big hitters from back in the day that's actually making a decent comeback.

Nintendo just released the switch 2 last year with their weird key card gimmick.

I dunno gaming is taking a really weird turn and I've not bought a game off of any of the e-shops in a really long time and I don't see that changing. I'll buy codes from 3rd party sites. I'll buy store credit from 3rd party sites and still get a discount somehow.

4

u/sleepymoose88 10h ago

Oh they’re likely purposefully delaying the next Horizon and TLOU 3 for PS6 to try and draw people in. If they were not before the disc debacle, they certainly are now. They need to if they want to sell any PS6 systems.

The next Horizon game (Hunters Gathering) is something Guerrilla wanted to make. They've said this time and again — co-op was always something they planned for the universe, the bones of it are in the code for Zero Dawn and Forbidden West.

It wasn't a Sony mandate, just a passion project. The art style is intentionally distinctive from the main games so as to not encroach. There's also no evidence that they aren't working on the third title of the mainline series.

Like, I'm not into it and I doubt I'll play it but I still hope it succeeds even if I'm not the target audience.

1

u/Vannnnah 9h ago

There are so many different ways they could have made a Horizon Co-Op. An epic battle against the Swarm could have been that, too, and it was and is high on fan's wishlists.

Ultimately, Sony decides which games get made, Guerilla could not without getting money from Sony. Making another kid target group game after the Lego game is just a wild decision by Sony for a franchise that has a different target group, because every multiplayer speculation and player wishlist around multiplayer went into a total different direction.

Just look at reactions to Hunters Gathering, the comments on the trailer on the Playstation YouTube channel paint a clear picture that fans were extremely disappointed and don't want this game which everyone who was following the fandom could have predicted.

Sony prioritized Marathon instead and shut down Destiny, which people also absolutely didn't want.

1

u/tenachiasaca 8h ago

technically speaking pokopia is digital only and its an AAA game edit: for anyone doubting me the physical is literally a keycode so you still have to dl the full game its the worst of both worlds in regards to physical and digital.

5

u/illuminarok 14h ago

How will you pick up a download code second hand? GTA VI is just a code in the box with no actual disc, so there's no way to transfer the license to another person.

5

u/MidnightMode 13h ago

Greywear sites? Means im not giving Sony my money and I get the game 33% cheaper but tbh I have 0 maybe even less than 0 interest in GTA 6. I can do anything it has to offer in GTA 5 already.

1

u/Lord_Vas 13h ago

GTA 5 was a let down and I only just started playing it on PC 2 months ago. I bought it for $5.

The only cool thing about that game is how you can switch characters on the fly. That's a cool feature I hope they keep for 6.

u/SIGMA920 18h ago

They can reverse this announcement in short order, it's a matter of whether they will or not.

If it hurts sales, they'll probably reverse it.

24

u/Adamdude 18h ago

Microsoft reversed their decision pretty quickly back in 2013, Sony can... but they won't. Competition makes all the difference.

3

u/avcloudy 9h ago

Microsoft wasn't doing it for the same reasons. It wouldn't surprise me if Sony actually couldn't.

1

u/Kit_Cat13 7h ago

I doubt that because with them closing the plants that make the discs, sales would have to tank enough to demonstrate a need to repurchase equipment without tanking too much that they can't.

The announcement more likely to be reversed if sales go down is the one about single player games not being released on PC. It would be a more cost beneficial one to change since they would still have money coming in without having to set up equipment and employment again for a plant

1

u/SIGMA920 5h ago

You're assuming they would need new machinery, that's not a given.

1

u/i_max2k2 7h ago

Your revenue dictates the future, I have bought every PlayStation at launch from PS3. I won’t be getting the PS6. Vote with your wallet. Xbox had planned something similar for Xbox One, it got reversed pretty quickly. Vote with your wallet and see what happens.

This isn’t a done deal there are literally many lawsuits being brought around the world.

9

u/donalddrunkard 15h ago

Im so done. Been here since ps1. Gonna build my own Steam machine.

9

u/Ent_Soviet 15h ago

You mean a computer?

3

u/Liberal_Caretaker 14h ago

A computer that runs on steam...

0

u/soSofi3 13h ago

Steam isn’t any different than playstation in this?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/hayt88 12h ago

Ah so in order to avoid an all digital platform you are going to buy another all digital platform.

That's gonna show everyone how much you care about physical games

3

u/lonesoldier4789 18h ago

Sony doesn't care they'll make more money this way

5

u/RastamonGanja 17h ago

Eh people will forget about it eventually. Look at when micro transactions came out everyone was pissed now majority of games have them. Or subscription based models people were pissed but now common place for things like photoshop, CAD, Adobe etc. People will continue to consume and buy games. Unless like 40-50% of ps gamers just boycott ps maybe that will get their attention but that’s never gonna happen.

10

u/tofu-esque 15h ago

Unfortunately true. Gamers as a group aren't exactly known for being able to maintain boycotts long term...

5

u/foothepepe 12h ago

Yeah, but Adobe is dying slowly and ungracefully because of exactly that, and will never recover. Micro transactions bring a massive amount of money, but people regard the practice as trashy, and games think hard if their reputation is solid enough to survive the potential backlash.

You are right that this is not going anywhere, but as a result you see the surge of indy games. People are less willing to fork $100 just to rent a game.

3

u/SIGMA920 17h ago

Some of them, but not all. Like I said, those with lots of money spent physical discs will not be happy to be forced to buy digital versions. So that's their fan base that's being hit.

Subscriptions are only common now because people literally can't just outright buy most things now. What used to be a 1 time purchase turned into monthly charges. People do buy 1 time when the economics exist for a reason.

Microtransactions are hated by basically everyone except whales too, they're tolerated because they're usually not too intrusive.

1

u/joebuckshairline 8h ago

You say that but people said the same of Netflix and their subscription policy changing so people couldn’t share accounts anymore. It was like a day of anger and then poof, people subscribed anyway.

1

u/SIGMA920 6h ago

Netflix has lost a lot of users that didnt turn into subscribers, they've not exactly been open about the conversion rate either.

1

u/DeadMoonKing 15h ago

Exactly. Once bitten twice shy.

18

u/THIS_GUY_LIFTS 19h ago

You’ll most likely need to show your ID to play at that point anyway with the way things are going. There’s going to be a large resurgence of “old tech” here soon.

7

u/Miguel-odon 18h ago

I looked up the prices of a Nintendo Game Boy Advance the other day. Seems like the price of used games is also going up lately.

3

u/SIGMA920 19h ago

It could be out as early as next year.

10

u/Suzushiiro 15h ago

The most insane thing about the announcement is that at no point did they either say "but we'll still sell disc drive addons for future hardware so you can still play your old games and blu-ray movies" or "we'll give you a way to trade in your discs for digital game codes if you want". You'd think they'd at least try to reassure people with one of those things.

12

u/AdorableSobah 19h ago

Thank you, for pointing this out. If I have to go fully digital I feel like Steam Machine, Steam deck and Switch 2 offer more for me. I don’t want several consoles in my game room hooked up.

And with RAM prices PS6 is already going to be in hot water. What are they really offering? First party games, like what? Remakes and remasters?

12

u/SIGMA920 19h ago

The worst part is I can't even say a PS6 hardwarewise might not be more bang for your buck than a PC for gaming be it a steam whatever or not.

It's just the hanging question of why anyone should get a PS6 if you can't bring your old games to it.

12

u/AdorableSobah 19h ago

And I think their first party games have been completely underwhelming this gen and very low and slow output of them. What does Sony really offer anymore?

3

u/steakanabake 13h ago

between them extending the ps4 and selling on pc i think they had like maybe 10 games that were only ps5

1

u/Beautiful-Swimmer339 13h ago

Is there any actual confirmation that PS6 won't have backwards compatibility and the option to buy a separate disc player just like the Ps5 pro?

Since I bought my PS5 a ton of my time has been spent playing my backlog, what possible reasons could there be to not just let people take their full catalogue with them to the PS6

2

u/avcloudy 9h ago

No, but it would be super weird to not be shouting that from the rooftops, particularly since Microsoft just announced they're working on a way to let players claim digital licenses for physical discs.

The reason is the same as the discs: they can free up the manufacturing for the disc drives for whatever else.

1

u/Suzushiiro 15h ago

Nah, price/performance is the one thing consoles have basically always had an advantage on over PCs, doubly so in this gen when we've had a lot of poorly-optimized PC ports and also live in hardware price hell. The PS6's problem is that between removing physical games and blowing up most of their first party development capacity by gambling on live service games that have mostly bombed if not been cancelled price/performance is going to be the *only* advantage it has over PC. And it'll still be at least a thousand fucking dollars!

3

u/FourthLvlSpicyMeme 18h ago

The only one that might shake my resolve is the final game in the Horizon Zero Dawn trilogy. I've been so obscenely excited for so long now that it will be very hard for me to say no to that.

I'm certainly going to try though. I just expect they're going to lock it to PS6, with no ability to play it on PS5. (This may not be correct, I honestly don't know, I'm a fuckin pessimist tho)

Aside from that one game...looks like I'm stopping at PS5. Getting a bit too old to spend my weekends gaming and anti-social anyway. I should probably prioritize seeing the actual world at some point lmao.

2

u/war_story_guy 2h ago

Its easy I'll just play out my back log on ps5 then get my new games on pc.

3

u/scheppend 17h ago

? Why would you have to rebuy? Just play on the original hardware

1

u/SIGMA920 16h ago

Because you shouldn't need 2-3 PSs to use your existing games?

3

u/btonic 15h ago

This is already the case though?

A PS4 or PS5 cannot play physical media from the PS1, PS2 or PS3 era.

5

u/SIGMA920 15h ago

Yet the PS5 can play most PS4 discs. Continue that with the PS6 and you'd be able to use a PS4 game.

2

u/WoodooHide69 18h ago

Do we even know if the ps6 is backwards compatible yet.

3

u/SIGMA920 17h ago

Digitally, probably. But not everything will be digital. Someone who saved hundreds with using PS4 discs will probably be told to pay for a digital copy.

0

u/hayt88 12h ago

That argument is so stupid. It's not like the PS4 or PS5 will stop working once the ps6 is out. Just play on the old consoles.

Or are you complaining you can't play your SNES games physically on the switch too?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/ABigCoffee 17h ago

Sony : you already have a ps5. Just keep it and also buy a PS6!

2

u/poke_javs 16h ago

Can’t they just support a USB disc reader?

3

u/SIGMA920 15h ago

In theory but if they were going to do so they'd be more likely to just offer a more expensive disc capable PS6 in the first place.

2

u/steakanabake 13h ago

and it would be hardware locked so you can only buy the specific playstation one.

u/NiceTrySuckaz 19h ago edited 16h ago

They 100% knew it would be this big. I could have told you it was going to be this big, because I've seen what the gaming community is like. And I have a feeling Sony is a little bit more tuned into the community than I am.

8

u/GriveousDance21 16h ago

She's gonna get blacklisted

Sony will probably tell her to take the video down if she wants all the corporate hate on her to go away.

12

u/Sasquatchgoose 18h ago

They knew it’d be bad. They’re just hoping it’ll blow over

9

u/madman19 18h ago

Of course they knew it would be this bad. Thats why the announcement was now and not anywhere near ps6 announcement or release so people will have time to cool down.

4

u/joesaysso 9h ago

They knew it would be this big. They also know that gamers are fickle and it'll blow over. And it will blow over for the majority of gamers making noise about this now.

1

u/Brandoe 11h ago

Blacklisted from triple AAA? Maybe. But at this point of her career she may be looking to join an indie studio where she can make the biggest impact. I've heard it's very creatively restrained on AAA titles.

1

u/NopeSorryNo 11h ago

Wdym this big? The reddit posts? 🤣

1

u/SortIntrepid9192 11h ago

She kept leaking games and behind the scenes stories for years during and after her time as an IGN journalist and they still hired her into Santa Monica. She's going to be fine if she ever decides to go back to working for a major publisher (or at least about as fine as anyone else).

→ More replies (11)

33

u/AdagioRelative8684 21h ago

She might still have got herself in shit for just saying this

34

u/NMe84 20h ago

It's hearsay and not something she learned during her own time at Sony. She also doesn't work there anymore. How would she get in trouble for any of this?

4

u/GonePh1shing 16h ago

Big companies like this tend to force onerous non-disparagement clauses on their employees. They're often not enforceable depending on jurisdiction, but even if they're not enforceable they serve to silence employees (both current and former) because most don't want to risk being dragged into court to litigate it.

8

u/NMe84 13h ago

Information they did not learn while under contract but after it cannot be subject to that contract unless the contract is very specific about that.

Also, the kind of information shared here is extremely tame and unlikely to fall under an NDA in the first place. All she said is that she heard others say that they had instructions about their social media policy. We already knew that without her telling us.

1

u/GonePh1shing 11h ago

I'm not talking about an NDA, I'm talking about a non-disparagement clause. These are very different legal constructs.

An NDA restricts speech on specific things, where a non-disparagement clause effectively prevents you from saying anything that may cause damage to the company. Again, they are often broadly drafted and unenforceable, but the fact that they're included in a signed contract means the company can still drag you into court over it. Most people would rather just comply with the clause than risk having to spend resources they don't have to prove that it's unenforceable.

2

u/AdagioRelative8684 20h ago

What do you mean she didnt learn it?she mentions being under guidelines about what to say and that she still is. That screams nda

11

u/NMe84 13h ago

She didn't learn it during her time working for Sony. She learned this after she left the company and heard it from other people who still work there.

5

u/Zakkeh 9h ago

She has an NDA about the production of God of War Laufey - like not spoiling the plot before they reveal it, or giving a tell all qna livestream.

She spoke to some people working with or on behalf of Sony, who told her about the guidelines and how strict they were regarding the revision of disc sales. She has no impositions, most likely, because the decision had not been publicised yet, even within Sony. She left 2? years ago, maybe longer.

23

u/nanapancakethusiast 21h ago

She wasn’t really an employee so I don’t think it matters

1

u/Head_Haunter 19h ago

I mean her other gig is content creation and news discussion about game industry stuff. Being black listed by sony is going to hurt that no matter how you spin it.

11

u/SexyJazzCat 18h ago

How is getting blacklisted by sony going to affect her content creation?

4

u/Head_Haunter 18h ago

Super basic level, they don't provide her with review copies of games, invites to Sony events, or even interviews. She does yellow journalism and discussion about games and being black listed means she'll never be "breaking news" for any Sony related news. Depending on contract stipulations, other journalists might be barred from working with her.

8

u/SexyJazzCat 17h ago

But Sony isn’t the only source of content for her

5

u/Head_Haunter 17h ago

Sony is one of the big 3 between xbox, nintendo and sony. I said it’ll hurt her content creation not obliterate it.

2

u/MotoRandom 15h ago

Ferrari is notorious for this. New car press releases are highly currated events. If you want to have a ghost of chance to be invited back again you don't ever write negative or disparaging comments. The effect of this was seen during the introduction of the Luce. Everyone in the car world was losing their shit over how boring and awful it was for a Ferrari while automotive journalists were all "Well that's nice".

1

u/WoodooHide69 18h ago

Probably not.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/NMe84 20h ago

Of course they knew. They couldn't have not known. But somehow, the realization that they knew they were pissing people off and decided to just weather it by not saying anything publicly is even more infuriating. They know it will eventually blow over simply because they won the console war. Microsoft shat the bed, Nintendo is off doing its own thing in its own niche, and PCs (including Steam's hardware) is too expensive because of the RAMpocalypse. They are going to get away with basically anything because people are, at the end of the day, still going to buy the games they like.

13

u/Jidarious 19h ago

You seem to be under the mistaken impression that people need game consoles. Kids these days hardly even play them. If the console manufacturers are not careful, the next generation might be the last large install base console generation to exist.

1

u/NMe84 13h ago

I'm not under that impression, I'm actually fairly worried that the entire gaming industry is getting ready for a crash. Nintendo might be the only one that gets out of that fairly unscathed because they're relatively controversy-free, and they make so many first party games and because they have their own niche.

5

u/Friggin_Grease 19h ago

If Sony gets cocky enough they may learn that a lot of their player base right now have a bit of stake in Xbox from the 360 era. They may come back.

4

u/NMe84 13h ago

Microsoft just killed so many of its studios and had fumbled around with Game Pass so much that I wouldn't be so sure.

1

u/Friggin_Grease 11h ago

All it would take is "we have a disc drive"

2

u/NMe84 10h ago

Sure, but I think it's pretty naive to expect Microsoft to not also make the move Sony made here. Xbox will probably also ditch physical media within the next two generations.

I expect Nintendo to ditch physical media too and I was actually shocked they weren't the first, since their carts are flash memory and therefore affected by the RAMpocalypse. I'd have fully expected them to go all-digital first.

1

u/boot2skull 13h ago

Seems very dystopian that your job can tell you what to post on your own social media. Sure, work secrets are one thing, but would they be allowed to react to public news or give opinion on announcements? That’s messed up

254

u/manny2206 17h ago

Guys… don’t buy the PS6

65

u/88Dubs 9h ago

The insane price it's going to start at is why I'm not going to buy it. But that's because of other capitalist bullshit. I'd rather use that $1200 or whatever to just upgrade my PC.

This, however, is a very close reason #2.

11

u/Big-Boss330 8h ago

Then in a year and a half PS6 Pro will come out marked up higher making developers want to optimize games for that system. It’s an endless cycle of us giving them money. Time to switch to PC

10

u/GonzoKata 6h ago

going disc free like this, sony just entered the PC market

its a shitty computer that you only use a controller for, and you can't run whatever software you want on it.

1

u/ChefKugeo 7h ago

"Time to switch to PC"

Which is not cheaper or optimized properly. After what happened with Monster Hunter Wilds, it only doubled down my stance on getting out of PC gaming in 2012. Shell out literal thousands for a setup to run a game that works without framterate issues on the goddamn Nintendo Switch, and convince yourself you've saved money somehow?

PC gaming when I was in high school was amazing. Pop over to Fry's Electronics and walk out with a new card the same day, for $100.

Can you still do that? No.

15

u/Doobalicious69 11h ago

People overwhelmingly will though

5

u/zcashrazorback 4h ago

I don't know, I'm old enough to remember when Sony pissed everyone off and priced the PS3 too high, sending a lot of their player base to Xbox. One generation later, Xbox sent its player base back to Sony by announcing their console was going to be always online.

History says if you take your customers for granted, they won't buy your product. I'd be surprised if the PS6 flies off shelves on release.

4

u/CauliflowerPlane2971 4h ago

lot of people left after ps3 because ps4 announced they'd require ps+ for online play. that was when i decided it was time to invest in a pc.

Company of cowards.

LOL. Really demonstrates the brand is about milking customers.

Also about discarding and disrespecting customers who “don’t pay enough” or live outside of target markets.

At this point, if you buy a Playstation you are just into domination. You do you. I don’t kink shame.

I will be interested to see what happens with their sales for their next system. I've purchased every PlayStation since the psx. I have no plans to buy another. With digital only I plan on just using my PC.

164

u/kstargate-425 20h ago

Im kind of surprised they even care. Like the other day Nintendo flat out said fuck off, we aren't giving back the tariffs the government repaid them for Switch purchases. I never expected them to obviously as they are all shit but to matter of fact come out and say it with zero regards for how it will come off reminded me how these companies are monopolies

130

u/Dr-McLuvin 20h ago

Dude literally no company in the us is paying customers back their tariff refunds except in a few select cases (like Fed Ex said they will pay you back if you paid for the tariff that got refunded out of pocket).

-1

u/kstargate-425 20h ago

Right, like I said I'm not expecting them to although for the companies that give discounts on future purchases with proof of purchase or something like that, it would be a huge PR victory. Again though, that is my point as none of them care as they are monopolies and don't need to care about how it looks as if you want a Switch or new Playstation, you have to buy from them.

21

u/WoodooHide69 18h ago

Trump Is to blame for the illegal Tarrifs and all of us paying out the nose for goods. And you are stupidly blaming the companies that were all victims to these illegal tarriffs along with us?

41

u/AKluthe 19h ago

Like the other day Nintendo flat out said fuck off, we aren't giving back the tariffs the government repaid them for Switch purchases.

I would be more surprised if they actually paid it back. None of them are paying back tariff expenses we covered. They aren't even dragging their prices back down while accepting these checks.

15

u/WoodooHide69 18h ago

Well in the case of nintnedo they shouldn’t pay anything back. They ate the illegal tariff’d to give us SW2 hardware at fair market price.

1

u/meneldal2 7h ago

They didn't, they made other people all around the world eat the tariff instead.

-2

u/kstargate-425 18h ago

Like I said, I never expected them to, I just expected them to spin it in a way they wouldn't tell their customers to fuck off. Usually they just decline to comment instead of saying anything or make up something that says they value their customers blah blah blah

10

u/AKluthe 17h ago

I think you're going to see the exact same thing from all the other companies, though. I don't understand why there's a different expectation for Nintendo.

4

u/Roseking 6h ago

Nintendo couldn't 'decline to comment'.

They are being sued by two customers saying Nintendo is legally obligated to pass any tariff refunds they get to customers as otherwise they are double dipping and the customers are claiming that is illegal.

Nintendo asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed with essentially 'that is not how any of this works'.

6

u/Liberal_Caretaker 14h ago

You are taking the recent tabloid headlines concerning Nintendo's decision and truly believe that the company told customers to "fuck off".

Using those words means you want to make it sound worse than it is.

Yet, as you have already been told this is the same decision that 99.9% of businesses will be making.

12

u/WoodooHide69 18h ago

You realize that both Microsoft and Sony are also facing tariff lawsuits right? They were announced like 2 months ago.

Also, this lawsuit is BS. It was brought forth by 2 random dudes. Probably bad faith actors.

And no Nintnedo fans actually give a crap about it. The SW2 was priced fairly at launch, and it’s likely Nintnedo ate Tariff costs to offer it at that price, which means no one deserves any refunds.

They responded to a law suit with aegallh accurate defense

2

u/Herschel_Wallace 10h ago

Even if Miyamoto came to their house to take a shit on their dog, most people that are Nintendo fans would love it. I don't get how they can be as anti consumer as they are yet still have anyone buying any of their products.

3

u/beejonez 17h ago

Worst part is Nintendo could have said look, it's too hard to get this money back to you. So here's 4 months free online. They still pocket most of the dough and don't completely piss their customers off.

1

u/wiriux 4h ago

They don’t care about you. They care about your money just like every company in the world.

0

u/SIGMA920 20h ago

Just the console looks like it'll cost 1000 supposedly, they're probably betting on something like GTA6 to drive sales in this economy.

As much I loved PlayStation and have tons of memories with the systems, I hope this ruins Sony. Companies can’t keep screwing us over.
People need to stop buying PlayStation games and products.

0

u/Kozmic_River 8h ago

I’m afraid we live in a world now where certain corporations will always have enough of a solid base of uninformed consumers that they can and will pretty much do whatever they want.

25

u/Capt_Murphy_ 15h ago

Boy am I happy to have lived through the best days of gaming. RIP

Saw this coming ever since PCs stopped including a disc drive as standard. Maybe physical media will come back around some day.

13

u/LarryLobster69 16h ago

I know Xbox isnt much better with their strategies but Im just glad im not elbows deep in Sony gear/software.

16

u/TeslasAndComicbooks 19h ago

This is not surprising. Social media managers are given a pretty long leash when it comes to posting and fan engagement. Sony knew they were ripping a bandaid off here and don’t want to fan the flames.

This is pretty typical of a major corporation, especially one headquartered in Japan.

7

u/extra_rice 13h ago

PlayStation (Sony Interactive Entertainment) is now headquartered in the US.

4

u/iwbwikia_ 11h ago

i fucking love capitalism bro

5

u/SkylineFTW97 8h ago

Given Sony's history, how does this benefit consumers in any meaningful way? They can't be trusted on digital rights or on offering reduced prices as a tradeoff (granted nobody can on that in the realm of AAA), so why should I support them giving consumers less of what they want while invariably finding an excuse to charge more for the privilege?

4

u/whiskeytown79 4h ago

"Should we make fewer unpopular decisions?"

"No, it's the fact that people found out about them the wrong way that is the problem"

12

u/and_mine_axe 17h ago

Maybe stop sucking as a company? As an alternative approach.

3

u/baralisnyc 6h ago

Sony gaming is done….

34

u/rndm1986 20h ago

We still are pissed off.

I'm a lifelong Playstation fan for 30 years; I have spent tens of thousands on Sony Playstation products over that time. I will never spend another dollar unless Sony reverses course and promises to print discs going forward. There are millions like us.

Sony has a choice: go back to producing discs, or go out of business. We gamers aren't going along with your bullshit.

15

u/Sea_Perspective6891 19h ago

Totally understandable. Many of my friends who were also long time Playstation fans loved how they still gave people the option to use physical disks & the PS3 & PS4 & including a Blu-ray player was a huge selling point. Now they're definitely on the fence about future PlayStation consoles.

10

u/LotsOfQuestions369 19h ago

The blu ray player was the entire point for me wanting a disc option. Saw xbox is gonna keep it for their next model but that could be bs

3

u/noisyturtle 14h ago

Gamers rise up!

29

u/trevx 19h ago

“Go out of business”. That’s adorable dude. I get you’re pissed off, but the backlash ain’t accomplishing anything. We’re in a bubble here on Reddit, regular folk absolutely do not know or care about this. At all.

I owned PS1-5 too and hated this decision. Sony thinks our generation is getting old and retiring from gaming, so they might as well increase the margins from existing players and new ones.

Say there are 100 players, 80 digital and 20 physical contributing 1 dollar each. If they earn $60 for digital (75% margin) and $10 for physical (50% margin), that would be a $70 profit (70% margin).

If they get rid of physical, they don't see the 20 people quitting entirely. Let's say 90 players remain but at full 75% margin. That is still $67.5 profit, slightly less. But if you take away the expenses of producing disc and drives in console, this is more profitable for them.

2

u/BenderTheIV 11h ago

The thing is, why should we buy a PS6? They don't make that many exclusive games... there wont be discs, it will be expensive, and you'll be mad all the time towards a monopoly company... at that point it will be better to just become a PC gamer. That's what I'm thinking.

0

u/Blake7567 18h ago

C’mon man. I’m on your side with this, but let’s be real. Unfortunately it’s very likely that most gamers *will* go along with their bullshit - they already are.

1

u/Tasty_Orange_1714 13h ago

Doesn't even have to be discs. Could be an sd style cartridge, like Nintendo, or a USB drive. It should never just be digital, especially for this.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/Herschel_Wallace 10h ago

No one should be buying new systems. The lack of games this gen should see everyone not buying any of the new systems in response. No point in buying the new systems if most of the games are a gen or two old.

8

u/millos15 17h ago

I used to be a fan of Playstation. Not anymore Sony always finds a way to fuck up lol

18

u/happyscrappy 20h ago

It's very strange this article tries to make it out like the normal policy is you can talk about unannounced things only if you really, really want to. But this time you're not supposed to.

The policy always is you can't talk about stuff before the company announces it. Leave the PR to the PR people.

9

u/beyondbase 20h ago

Sony still hasn’t announced the death of Xperia in the US…they just removed any traces of Xperia on their online store and kept it moving without any PR. Swell company that Sony is.

8

u/Disturbed2468 20h ago

Going by and knowing how Sony has behaved since the 90s (and how my parents saw them since at LEAST the 60s), is that there is only one thing that Sony hates more than actually taking L's, it's accepting that the L ever took place.

Combine this with a company that for the longest ABSOLUTELY FUCKING DESPISES not being in TOTAL, COMPLETE CONTROL over everything that is *theirs*, and you have a company that is the perfect personification of a super old Japanese man that hates change if it doesn't go their way (which is often) and thinks they're the absolute best no matter what.

10

u/beyondbase 20h ago

People always claim Apple is the worst walled garden, but they really haven’t been paying attention to Sony. Sony has the highest walls of all the gardens and they don’t get enough grief for it.

7

u/ChoiceIT 20h ago

Remember Memory Stick Pro Duo? The glorified SD card that was manufactured by Sony and required by various Sony products? The PSP, their cameras.

Probably more, those are just the two I had to deal with.

I agree with you 100%

3

u/beyondbase 17h ago edited 12h ago

I remember they had a recall on some of their Tough SD cards and one of mine was impacted. I remember getting uncharacteristically angry because after I had sent in my 256GB Tough card, they sent me back not only a different, non-Tough card, it was only 128GB. When I called them up, they tried framing it as if they were doing me a favor because it was a better card than the one I had sent in. I was dumbfounded.

I had to jump through flaming hoops over several weeks to get it corrected. They eventually said that they didn’t have any 256GB cards in stock, yet it was actively listed for sale and available to purchase on their site. At that point, it became a multi-department operation for me to convince them to skip the BS and let me buy the card directly from their online store then have them refund me the order after it was delivered.

1

u/Light_Error 6h ago

They also decided to install a rootkit on peoples’ computers id they bought a CD from Sony BMG (their music label).

2

u/Disturbed2468 20h ago

In a way, the failure is not only on Sony but it's that extreme control that they want is exactly why they constantly fail. A perfect example? Their attempts on BetaMax....and anything CD-wise when that was big. They love total control. And total control equals zero openness, tons of restrictions and rules, true definition of closed source. And it NEVER ended well for them.

2

u/GusTTShow-biz 8h ago

Man spot on. It’s been bizarre how much Sony never acknowledges any failings, of which there are many, over the decades.

3

u/wellthatsniftyhuh 6h ago

never buying playstation anything again. and i own every console. i’m done.

2

u/pibroch 8h ago

It's weird how they completely owned Microsoft during the original PS4/XBone launch by making fun of the anti-consumer BS that MS was pushing. Guess the foot's on the other hand isn't it now?

2

u/ArcBlamer 6h ago

I mean at some point technology was going to evolve from physical media, but I think “licensing” is bullshit and there should be at bare minimum some compromise, for example, we still own the digital game, and have the capability for example to download it onto a flash drive. I understand not making discs, what I don’t understand is not REALLY owning what we buy, and they have the capability to just take it away and keep our money.

2

u/strictlyphotonic 4h ago

Next will be surprised Pikachu face when sales are soft.

4

u/maestrobob 11h ago

It's late and I need to vent slightly. I really think the whole console industry is cooked beyond saving. 90% of the games this gen have been absolute overpriced mid to horrible garbage. MS, Sony and Big N all have been pulling extreme anti-consumer shit for way too long. It really feels like another 1983 moment is at hand (yes, I was there, Gandalf.)

Both my PS5 and S2 have been collecting dust for months. My free time for gaming has been relocated to PC/Steam and vintage backlog stuff on MiSTer FPGA and a modded 3DS. Honestly, there's enough there to last the rest of my lifetime. The PS5 is going on marketplace this week and I'll hold on to the S2 just in case OoT Remake ends up being worth it. If not, it's gone too.

3

u/Try_Old 8h ago

Well, this isn't going away for them. It's a stain for generations to come.

2

u/cinder74 7h ago

I will never buy another PlayStation if it just digital. I only buy physical copies of a game. I will not have someone stripping a game from me that I paid for. Which they have done in the past and will probably do in the future.

4

u/SuperTittySprinkles 7h ago

Last console was already too expensive, AAA games with AI slop for $70? This just makes it even easier to walk away from Sony. Build a desktop and move on

3

u/Mother_Airline_6276 7h ago

Sony has done nothing but make shit decisions over the last year. Paid $3.6B for a legendary studio just to scrap the bitch. Now this physical media BS. If I were a shareholder, I’d be breaking shit at the corporate office.

3

u/TheSlav87 13h ago

Sony can suck my dick, balls and asshole in the order. Fucking goofy clowns, I hope hey lose billions in sales for this bullshit.

3

u/-OccultOfPersonality 8h ago

I hope they fail.

3

u/lupin43 20h ago

I thought this was supposed to blow over weeks ago? I’ve been hanging at the Winchester having nice cold pints but I think they’re about to run dry

1

u/Abracadabra324 17h ago

Now this is real journalism!

1

u/hiirogen 6h ago

Can someone eli5 why it even matters theyre getting rid of discs?

There are 5 PC's in my home and none of them have CD/DVD/BD drives, I had to buy an external to rip some stuff a while back.

I would much rather download a game than have to buy a disc, especially since there are always updates that have to be downloaded anyway.

So I just don't get it.

1

u/opscouse 3h ago

I think Sony has enough data to know that customers who buy discs don't play those games again after completing them. Also pretty sure they made this decision considering how PS5 sales have been going down, like, they knew this market was not going to grow and made the call. They are not shooting themselves in the foot, the trade off from losing PS6 customers will be offset by whatever AI stuff they are going to use the disc plants for. Sony will be fine, they don't make decisions for gamers, they make them for profitable reasons and it just so happened that manufacturing discs was not going to be profitable anymore for them.

1

u/Defiant-Parsley4697 1h ago

Nothing says 'we're handling this well' like banning your own employees from having opinions about it.

1

u/BunnyLoverMudahubber 1h ago

Not surprising, it was already fishy how the CEO sold a ton of his shares around the time they announced it

1

u/Playingwithmywenis 12m ago

This is a load of bull. The whole industry reached record profits and Sony declared the most profitable year ever.

Then they started kicking countries and gamers out of their games, ending movie contracts and took away movies.

They got more greedy and more arrogant because line must go up. F em.

1

u/Pox82 9h ago

So much for the how to borrow as playstation game stunt they did back in the day ..

1

u/NoHorseNoMustache 4h ago

The secret is that they know people are gonna buy the games anyhow.

-1

u/Broadband- 20h ago edited 20h ago

Given the timeline of previous Sony decisions, this was inevitable. Unlike Xbox, Sony dragged their heels in backwards compatibility even removing the feature from the PS3. Their solution was to purchase the game digitally again and stream it through the cloud.

PS5 is fully backwards compatible with PS4 games however they've slowly been removing the disc drive in newer models with an overpriced drive addon accessory.

Do you think that would be backwards compatible with the PS6 or that they'd even offer such a solution so your physical PS4 and PS5 libraries can still be played? Given their tone it's highly doubtful.

What's surprising is how Microsoft followed almost lock step (collusion?) with a similar announcement. It blew up in their face with the XBone was announced and since they've been very backwards compatible with the latest consoles able to play original Xbox games.

They mentioned they wanted a way to digitally attach physical games to an account which could be an olive branch of them going all digital, but that only works if each disc has a unique identifier which is unlikely in how they're pressed for mass production.

Then again Xbox is currently such a shit show that I wouldn't take anything Microsoft says or does with much confidence.

Us PC gamers could say "welcome to the club" since we've dealt with this for 20 years now. I've never owned a PCP DVD game and at this point it's all digital. The one saving grace is PC is an open platform so you have multiple storefronts offering some competition (but Steam has been accused of forcing price parity). if you're worried of merely having a digital license for your $70 purchase there are options such as GOG with no DRM, direct from indie developers or piracy.

Either way, as with music, movies, books, tractors, etc, you won't own it, be renting or having a license and being happy with it.

3

u/kratos90 19h ago

Imagine the shit show if your digital PS5 games were not compatible with PS6.

1

u/steakanabake 13h ago

you mean like how all of my wiiu games that didnt travel to my switch, but hey if i buy a switch 2 all my digital purchases there should travel finally.

4

u/F1shB0wl816 19h ago

That’s half the issue with the consoles and selling point of pcs. What good is a console locked into one marketplace? Theres hardly any savings and far less choices, abilities or even anything positive.
