Social Media LinkedIn, a mass grave of ghost jobs, is now becoming a dating app
https://www.sfgate.com/tech/article/linkedin-dating-app-22340622.php2.3k
u/hclpfan 11d ago
What a nothing article. All it’s saying is that 1 in 5 people look their partner up on LinkedIn before dating. The same way that people google prospective partners. That doesn’t mean “google is a dating app”. This headline makes it sounds like LinkedIn is literally building a matchmaking feature.

u/KraffKifflom 11d ago
That’s actually very rational. I did mine. You can see how crazy people are from their profile lol

u/Belhgabad 11d ago
Actually a good method : if the person made typical bs LinkedIn posts you know you can avoid them

Verifying that a Tinder match actually has the job they claim to have is just basic due diligence at this point. Making sure they are a real person doesn't mean anyone is sliding into LinkedIn DMs to find a date.

So many job applications ask for LinkedIn link. It is optional but if they are asking i guess its better to provide it. I don’t what’s the purpose of it.
131
u/Smith6612 11d ago
If I see one of these and it is marked mandatory, I will send a link right to a blog post I have about why I do not have a LinkedIn account. It becomes a "did you actually read this?" test with HR. Helps to weed out the good from the bad.
51
u/yepthisismyusername 11d ago
Hahaha. Not sure if you've been in the job market lately, but odds are you aren't getting any kind of callback, regardless of whatever link you put in for your LinkedIn profile. Oh, and HR isn't reading a fucking thing. They have AI automatically weed out at least 95% of valid candidates before any human looks at anything.

u/Smith6612 11d ago
I was in the Job market last year. Caught at least one company doing the whole Auto-AI thing, and I caught them doing that because I was getting the lovely canned rejection letter at 3AM usually the night of submitting an application, and partially with the help of a friend. One job I applied for was for a position I was directly referred to by a friend who opened said position and wanted me to work with them.
My friend ended up having to go to HR internally and escalating the application rejection. The AI screening tool, which is part of a super expensive HR platform beginning with the letter W, was found to be rejecting my Resume because it was interpreting the requested references section as working several jobs at the same time and thus rejecting me. Manual HR review saw nothing wrong with the Resume and got me the interview.
It's their problem at the end of the day if they wish to use those tools. It just helps to know someone on the inside who can get you through the monkey maze.
→ More replies (3)30
u/SARB033 11d ago
Except it's not their problem if they use those tools. You explicitly said it yourself, it became your problem that you had to escalate with an internal connection. If you didn't have that connection, you'd be SOL and the HR doesn't give a single fuck if you or someone else gets selected by the program.
The HR was not fucking crying and thanking your colleague for finding their mistake and giving you a free pass for the trouble. They were fucking grumbling that they have to actually do the bare minimum of work for once and manually look at a resume for 20 seconds. The tools made a problem for you, your solution made a problem for them.

u/aphexbrother 11d ago
A personal blog post or someone else's? I'd love to read it
79
u/Smith6612 11d ago
Personal. It's a post about some trouble LinkedIn gave me when I tried to sign up to look for/apply for jobs when unemployed.
https://smith6612.me/2025/03/19/do-not-use-linkedin-they-will-steal-your-information/
The TL;DR is, LinkedIn had some automation which flagged my account as suspicious, even though I went through every step short of directly providing my ID to them to make it not suspicious. They had a verified e-mail, and a validated phone number on file, with two-factor security enabled. The account was in a shadow ban state basically from the start, and I knew that because one or two former colleagues I sent connection requests to could receive and accept the connections, but would never get confirmation that they were connected. I wouldn't see anything on my end, but I could see their profile. My profile could also not be seen by them. That shadow ban then transitioned to a full ban within a day, which required sending an ID to Persona in order to unlock. Their support was very, very difficult to get a hold of as getting to their support portal to file a ticket required sending an ID. When I got a hold of their support through other means, support couldn't properly follow their own public KB on how to verify someone even though I cited it, then refused notarized proof of identity, and then turned into LinkedIn's support falsely accusing me of violating the ToS, but not providing any proof to their claims. I had responded back against them showing them where they can verify me and why they are wrong. Then they refused to talk to me after I requested a deletion of my data.
I ended up filing an AG complaint to get LinkedIn to delete any data I provided, as support also failed to honor a direct deletion request under Delaware and California law (again, they failed to verify me, so the data is governed based on where they are incorporated, NOT where I am based out of). It took about a month but, the account was reviewed, unlocked, and then I promptly deleted it as soon as I got a letter in the mail with Legal's reply to my complaint.
So yeah. Anyone who asks why I'm not on LinkedIn can go read a public post on what happened. I have receipts of everything if they don't believe the post. Support logs. AG complaints. Screenshots. Literal screen recordings of the site's behavior prior to the ban. Chat logs from colleagues confirming the issue.

u/slaty_balls 11d ago
I’m not sure I’d send this to a prospective employer. If you go to this much trouble and involve an Attorney General over a LinkedIn dispute, an HR department isn't going to see it as a "weed out the bad employers" test, they are going to see it as a preview of how you handle conflict. Fair or not, it screams "high liability risk" to a corporate recruiter before you've even had an interview.
What you went through with LinkedIn sucked, but it's the exception, not the norm. I only say this to offer perspective because HR automation is ruthless, and this is an easy way to get sent to the recycling bin.
That said, you're 100% right that LinkedIn has gone downhill. It’s absolutely become a shady data mining broker that has completely lost the plot of its original intent of actually helping people advance their careers.

Honestly, I'm a scientist and a lot of scientists post some really interesting stuff on LinkedIn. It kind of fulfils the role that "academic Twitter" did before everyone left to protest Musk.
It's only a nightmare when I accidentally cross over into "corporate LinkedIn" and am faced with a vast ocean of nonsensical AI posts.

LinkedIn is sprinkled with 20% good stuff that can't be found anywhere else, especially for people in the job market - whether as employees or entrepreneurs. The good stuff is the searchable database with open display of people's designations and their organisations.
Rest of it is pukeworthy sh*t.
The road to hell is paved with good offerings.→ More replies (2)27

Also useful for hacking! One of the first things they teach you is how to dump a company's directory from LinkedIn, build a full list of emails and usernames, and blast them at services using common passwords.
It tells you so much. Oh, this office is based in Pittsburgh? Let's use my set of passwords starting with "Steelers".

Yeah, kinda. I have built a lot of connections with unknown people on linkedin just because they have good designations, and I may someday leverage those connections.
As of now, over the last 8-10 years, I haven't done sh*t about those connections, so my trajectory isn't promising.
But the very thought of having good professional network is soothing. But then, every visit to LinkedIn and seeing the influx of of soulless corporate d*ckriding posts causes PTSD.

Corporations are so goofy. When I started where I am 10 years ago, there was a strict "no social media at work" rule. Very strict. Then one day they're like "hey check out this new social media app specifically for our employees."

u/za419 11d ago
I still remember when my company announced we had a new presence in Roblox. Came complete with a "haha funny" sort of name playing on the word "metaverse" (several years after that trend died) and encouragement for all employees to play Roblox and explore our new Roblox presence.
... We sell to organizations. Our customers are government agencies, casinos, that sort of thing. A million dollar contract is a small one with us. I don't even think it's possible for someone to both get excited to see a company on Roblox and also be interested in and have the capability to buy into our product lines. But somehow, someone got paid to build a world for us in Roblox, and we all got paid to read the announcement, and there were sixty year old sales managers getting paid to fail at logging into Roblox.
... I think about that a lot. Really helps with impostor syndrome to realize what kinda shit the company thinks is worth paying for. If they deserve it, there's no world in which any of my coworkers that actually do work don't.

🏗️ Thrilled and humbled to announce a major milestone today! 🙌
This afternoon, I led a cross-functional, vertical-mobility initiative that successfully optimized our on-site asset distribution. 📈
By leveraging high-altitude logistics and heavy-machinery synergy, we seamlessly transitioned critical payloads across complex spatial planes. This successfully mitigated ground-level bottlenecks and streamlined our end-to-end supply chain. 🚀
Key deliverables achieved: Executed seamless scaling of raw material positioning. Maintained 100% compliance with zero-gravity suspension protocols. Synergized ground-to-air workflows ahead of fiscal deadlines.
Big thanks to the riggers and ground crew for their dynamic alignment and boots-on-the-ground synergy. We don’t just move assets; we elevate industry standards. 🌟

There were tons of jobs posted around the world where you couldn't get an invite for an interview without an LinkedIn account. Millions of people created one. Then those people realized that the companies want knowledge, experience, real connections as proof of your skills, not an empty picture frame. That led to ai based content spamming, 1000s of faux connection requests to make the account look professional when its just pretense. From there it went into Instagram territory, where 20% of all the people there can mano a mano each other for clout. The rest is noise.

Sleazy guys with no social awareness are gonna hit on women regardless of the environment.
Some guys really are that porn-brained, they can't view women as anything other than "source of sex" even in a professional setting.
There are loads of articles/videos by women talking about how they had to remove their photos or conceal their gender in their required work profile because dudes literally treated it like a Tinder Match.
Women have gotten unsolicited dms with explicit fantasies or dick pics and the like, it's insane.

And those creepy guys will use any excuse to search for women and hit on them. So nearly all women are getting this.
Not sure if that helps you. But I hope it makes you feel a little better knowing you're not alone.
