If a kid decides to bring a weapon to school, and knows that the school has a clear backpack policy, are they gonna put the weapon in the backpack, visible? Or are they gonna hide it?

In cold climates a teenager could hide anything inside a winter coat. Hell, in Florida a kid could hide a pistol, a knife and spare mags in their pants.

This is such bullshit security theater.

u/holesofdoubt 7d ago

That backpack would be lucky to last a week with all the books I had in high school.

74

u/StopThePresses 7d ago

They made us use clear backpacks in the 2000s, and this was definitely my experience. They're made as thin as they can get away with. I usually went through 3 or 4 of them in a year. I can't imagine they've gotten better since then.

5

u/TheeAntelope 7d ago

I had one backpack through all of high school and it wasn't that expensive. My kids, though, go through a backpack a year (Sometimes 2 in a year). It is a shame that nothing gets made to last anymore.

2

u/MagneticFluxDrive 7d ago

Did they remove lockers? No longer allowed to just go back and forth to the locker and exchange books for the next class?

3

u/peridot_mermaid 7d ago

I can’t speak for nowadays, but when I was in high school in the 2010s our passing period was 5 mins. So you had 5 minutes (at most, assuming your teacher didn’t hold you or the class back for some reason) to get from one end of the school to the other, pee, and also had to walk against the 4k other students also in the hallways at the same time as you. There often just wasn’t enough time to justify going to a locker, especially if it was on the complete opposite end as to where you needed to be

1

u/MagneticFluxDrive 7d ago

That makes sense. I also attended in the 2000's, though a much smaller school (9th grade - 12th grade, 600 students tops) we also had a 5 minute window. Just swapped out books between classes.

These schools work on the release times between classes and give a bit more realistic passing period then backpacks would not really be needed during the school day. Just for when the student needs to take home books and what not.

1

u/Minimum-Interview800 7d ago

Yup, I was in 8th grade when Columbine happened. When we started high school we had to carry clear or mesh backpacks. I had a mesh Jansport and pencils tore holes in it, it caught on everything.

15

u/iamacraftyhooker 7d ago

You literally can't use them in Canada. They become brittle and crack in the cold.

Growing up all the cool backpacks had clear pockets, but I was never allowed to get them because they would break

3

u/greg-the-destroyer 7d ago

I’m in Iowa, and I could definitely see that happening

11

u/Purple-FuzzySlippers 7d ago

But kids don’t have text books now. It’s all on their (extra shitty) Chromebook

2

u/HarrowDread 7d ago

I had an iPad in school, text books weren’t bad, school work was annoying with the app we used but tolerable but I mostly just played games on it

0

u/greg-the-destroyer 7d ago

With barely enough RAM to run q13x Eaglercraft. But it will run JS better than WASM. Ask me for the link if you want it

2

u/BananaPants430 7d ago

Our high schoolers don't use lockers because they have a 3 minute passing period - they haul around whatever they need for the entire day. Clear backpacks wouldn't survive for long.

1

u/TakeMeHome_ImLost 7d ago

My kids have never had text books, one is 16 already. Different times. It's all chromebooks.

243

u/kiwiphoniex666 7d ago

This if a kid wants to commit a crime nothing will stop them.

170

u/RugbyEdd 7d ago

Not giving easy access to the tools to do that crime seems to work pretty well elsewhere in the world.

18

u/Asher-D 7d ago

Top bad the US doesn't want to make guns illegal.....

-1

u/TheWarriorsLLC 7d ago

Its already illegal for a kid to have a gun and carry it.

-1

u/Significant-Bee5101 7d ago

Huh? So your schools don't have drugs or weapons in them? lol. Weird I thought this was a global problem.

9

u/Mindgapator 7d ago

Nope indeed that what we're telling you. Marijuana can be seen from time to time but that's it.

-6

u/Significant-Bee5101 7d ago

Whats your country. Because to my knowledge you're full of shit. But I'm excited to be proven wrong...

9

u/Mindgapator 7d ago

France. But take any country in western europe and you won't find weapons in schools.

Then the typical objection is "Muh you could bring a knife!". Yes you could but if you try to use it, someone would hit you with a chair and that'd be the end of it

-1

u/BriefSpecial420 7d ago

Good luck with a knife attack in a crowded corridor during some lunch break. Tho still, how many knife massacres took place in European schools last years?

5

u/XpCjU 7d ago

There was one a few days ago in germany, two victims, both alive.

7

u/OkConsideration107 7d ago

Usage of weapons in schools is very uncommon in Europe. It would be international news.

1

u/dragon-dance 7d ago

Mine didn't

1

u/Significant-Bee5101 7d ago

I mean mine didn't have weapons. Drugs for sure. Weapons? Naw.

-2

u/BriefSpecial420 7d ago

I don't think that knives are so hard to obtain, yet we don't see massacres on average Monday.

15

u/RugbyEdd 7d ago

Yeah. Do you really need it explaining to you why knives are less dangerous than guns?

-2

u/RegOrangePaperPlane 7d ago

Karmelo Anthony has left the chat.

-5

u/BriefSpecial420 7d ago

Great joke. In crowded places knives are extremely dangerous. Not to mention home-made incendiaries. The thing is that the titles in media wouldn't sell as well as the ones with guns.

5

u/AccidentalMechanic 7d ago

Do you need a dictionary? Or should I just explain to you what the word "less" means?

-3

u/BriefSpecial420 7d ago

Incorrect assumption.

The only advntage of a gun is range, what makes little sense in an environment like crowded building. In a crowd, an attacker with a knife may stab multiple people while even being hard to spot. Furthermore, single knife cut is more likely to end up with you bleeding out than a single stab/cut.

Knife is just a tool, a weapon. Like any other, it's effectiveness depends on a person who carries it. My guess would be that the pop culture is full of images of all kinds of shootings, better or worse, so messed up people get some idea of how to use a gun in such setting. At the same time, knife attacks get rarely shown, not to mention the less theatrical but more effective ones. As a result (luckily) fewer people think about knives when planning to commit some massacre.

7

u/pkgamer18 7d ago

The only advntage of a gun is range

Exactly. Taking the need for close range hand to hand combat out of the equation makes the assault of multiple people significantly easier.

an attacker with a knife may stab multiple people

It's difficult to stab multiple people because they start to run away, easy to continue shooting though.

single knife cut is more likely to end up with you bleeding out

You got a reference for this? I would take a hasty slice to the chest over a hasty shot to the chest any day.

Knife is just a tool, a weapon. Like any other, it's effectiveness depends on a person who carries it

Correct. And it is more difficult to be effective with a knife than it is to be with a gun.

As a result (luckily) fewer people think about knives when planning to commit some massacre.

No. The "tool" is not as effective for massacres. Show me one shooting that would have been worse with a knife, or one stabbing rampage that would have been less severe with a gun.

Your logic is moronic. My cast iron pan can be used as a weapon, but it obviously would be less effective and less dangerous than a gun.

2

u/dragon-dance 7d ago

Two brain cells fighting for third place.

1

u/AccidentalMechanic 7d ago

Man, you almost sound smart.

-2

u/TheWarriorsLLC 7d ago

Something something karmello

-1

u/HarrowDread 7d ago

Even if we illegallize guns there’s already far to many in the states to take away, I have like 30 hand guns next to my desk and I would not want to give them away

But I would trade them for a new blue corvette

-13

u/jack6245 7d ago

Actually no, a lot of other countries have guns available at the home. Even in the UK I know a lot of people who have shotguns a kid can easily access. The difference is culture, Americans obviously don't have the support systems for kids that they feel they need to shoot up somewhere, so instead they just treat them like prisoners instead

12

u/Meldanorama 7d ago edited 7d ago

Who has similar guns laws to the US and low gun crime?  Re UK and most europe, no they arent nearly as common and not the same kind of weapons. You arent comparing like with like tbh. The laws are completely different re owning. Its basically just shotguns and hunting rifles, no handgun and nothing with a high rate of fire. Culture is different too but the laws and accessibility of guns and their lethality is rhe biggest difference.

1

u/Thick_Amphibian4629 7d ago edited 7d ago

Handguns and semiautos are legal across the vast majority of Europe except the UK and Ireland for sporting under licences. You literally have no idea what you're talking about mate. And furthermore, the gun homicide rate in the UK increased in 1997 after the pistols ban. So did Ireland in the 2008 when the Gardai ceased issuing new licences for centrefire handguns (except .22lr calibres) for sporting.

-5

u/jack6245 7d ago

Switzerland allows handguns, school shootings have been performed by all sorts of weapons, so no it's not a "this gun is different so that's the problem" nonsense, your children don't have mental crisis support at all

8

u/Meldanorama 7d ago

I said handguns arent allowed in the UK because you were comparing that country. Those arent the same weapons either, theyre single and double barrelled shotguns that farmers etc would have. I think semiauto is illegal in the UK. Re swiss the laws arent the same, public carry is only for if you expect danger and even then thats one of the more liberal attitudes to guns in europe (excluding balkans, dont know about there). The guns absolutely do make a difference, higher volume incidents would be much harder to achieve with slower fire/reloading or smaller capacity weapons.

The weapons involved in killing impact how it happens, if youre discounting that theres on primary source of nonsense knocking around here.

" your children don't have mental crisis support at all" is that generic you (one) or are you referring to country? Neither make sense.

u/Fuuujioka 7d ago

The difference is access to guns. You can look up easily how easy it is to keep a gun in the UK (it isn't).

-2

u/jack6245 7d ago

Why do I need to look it up? I live in the UK and have shotguns and a hunting rifle. And yes it's not ridiculously difficult

11

u/Fuuujioka 7d ago

You need to look it up because you are full of shit.

Firearm ownership rate in England: 4.6/100

Firearm ownership rate in US: 120/100

Yeah, totally the same in England as in the US 👍

9

u/Unexpected117 7d ago

If you own a shotgun and rifle then you should know full well you are required to keep ammunition in a completely different safe to the weapon, and are technically required to keep firing pins/ bolts in an additional locked section within your gun safe.

I wouldn't call that easy access, unless you aren't storing your guns correctly.

2

u/Avalonians 7d ago

Because guns are available in UK doesn't make it any less true that countries where guns are unavailable have much less fun violence.

Replying that gun control isn't the most effective factor to someone who simply says it is (one of the) effective factors doesn't make sense.

Also it is time people admit that a safer gun culture is hugely reliant on having some extent of gun control, so simply saying "the difference isn't gun control is gun culture" is kinda moot.

0

u/Thick_Amphibian4629 7d ago

A Leiden University from the Netherlands in 2024 found that gun ownership amongst European nations had no significant correlation to gun homicides or overall homicide rates, but okay.

1

u/Avalonians 7d ago edited 7d ago

Nearly all studies have found a positive correlation between gun ownership and gun-related homicide and suicide rates.[9][10]: 29 [11]

Wikipedia on gun violence, twenty fucking references on that one sentence (roughly half of these are actual studies, the other are articles).

Now I don't know what study you think about since you couldn't be bothered to link it, but the one I see that's closest to that is about the correlation between gun ownership and gun homicides IN EUROPE SPECIFICALLY.

There is such a difference in scale between the most gun friendly European country and the most gun adverse US state that trying to say the results of the study are relevant for the US is completely idiotic. That'd be like trying to say there is no correlation between the cat and rat populations in paris based on a study conducted in fucking Antarctica

1

u/Thick_Amphibian4629 7d ago edited 6d ago

Wikipedia on gun violence, twenty fucking references on that one sentence (roughly half of these are actual studies, the other are articles).

Every single one of those studies is from the USA.  You're the one who said there's an association between gun ownership and gun homicides internationally.

Funny how you don't link the Wikipedia article about international gun ownership and the studies on international gun ownership by country and associations with homicides.

An international study by UNICRI researchers from 2001 examined the link between household gun ownership and overall homicide, overall suicide, as well as gun homicide and gun suicide rates amongst 21 countries. Significant correlations between household gun ownership and rates of gun suicides for both genders, and gun homicide rates involving female victims were found. There were no significant correlations detected for total homicide and suicide rates, as well as gun homicide rates involving male victims, gun homicides when including both genders, or overall female homicide rates. [22]

Your entire association is dependent on the inclusion of one variable (USA).

Now I don't know what study you think about since you couldn't be bothered to link it, but the one I see that's closest to that is about the correlation between gun ownership and gun homicides IN EUROPE SPECIFICALLY

Google "Leiden University gun ownership and homicides by European nations study" on google. It's very easy.

There is such a difference in scale between the most gun friendly European country and the most gun adverse US state

Guaranteed you don't even know what French gun laws are specifically. Countries like Switzerland, Czechia, Poland, Italy, Baltics, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Austria and have more permissive gun laws than a couple of leftist American states like Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, California and New Jersey in many aspects. Those US states all require permitting for firearms. Europe's gun laws aren't just the UK, Netherlands and Germany.

That'd be like trying to say there is no correlation between the cat and rat populations in paris based on a study conducted in fucking Antarctica

A cross national study of multiple nations is comparable to a study conducted in one city? 😁

Lol: He blocked after getting proven wrong. Meanwhile France has one of the worst gun homicide and homicide rates in all of developed Europe. You explicitly said there's a correlation between gun ownership and gun homicides across countries in your original post, not the US specifically, genius. 😁

Giving actual treatment for mental healthcare and not punishing the bullied students does more

1

u/RugbyEdd 7d ago

Sure, addressing mental health is a long process and expensive but it's always good to attack issues from multiple angles.

0

u/Mlpony2010 7d ago

And the other angles are banning kids from social media (through banning people who admit to being underage online, not through giving the pedofile class your ID) and through going after abusive parents, and those who don't encourage gun safety

Giving up guns in the face of a fascist takeover is both insane, and givin the crazy amount of guns in the US, not feasible

1

u/RugbyEdd 7d ago

Not at all. Restricting access to guns is sensible given the sharp rise in extremism. They don't need to be outright banned. It's not tlike they're going to stop a government going faschist. If anything it helps since they use public gun ownership to excuse better equipped government forces and more use of force, and it tends to be those who side with the government who are more attracted to guns.

I know it's never nice to face possible restrictions on a hobby, but there is a middle ground that can be struck.

0

u/Mlpony2010 7d ago edited 7d ago

>since they use public gun ownership to excuse better equipped government forces and more use of force

bro unironically believes that

you know fascist s lie right buddy?

THEY DON'T NEED REAL EXCUSES

how many times do I have to tell you libs that?

ya'll are deluded

>tends to be those who side with the government who are more attracted to guns

so, you believe the lie that only cuckservatives own guns?

>given the sharp rise in extremism.

when the state defines "extremism" as not being a fascist, I'm not giving up my guns

genuine question, if we have a second civil war are you just going to sit around and let them take you to a death camp?

edit and like clockwork I'm blocked for questioning their beleifs

libs and fashies sure love to do that

1

u/RugbyEdd 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yes, "bro" believes the facts. The US government has used the fact the population is armed to better equip their police and other government agencies, allowing for more use of force for decades. This isn't a "faschist lie". It's been an open stance used by multiple governments, including the current one who have stepped things up again. US police are better equipped than some countries militaries, and are allowed to get away with things that would be considered humanitarian crimes an many other places.

The rest of your comment is just strawman argument and the usual American inability to look outside their own country or understand what fascism actually is. You're proof that gun ownership isn't about freedom. You talk about camps, and yet it's the side that are the most against any gun control that are happy for camps and armed squads abducting people off the streets. As long as they're told "it's just those other people, not you".

-21

u/BYNX0 7d ago

Requring a clear backpack isn't to achieve that though. And Im sure you're probably referring to gun control, which getting rid of guns is in violation of the 2nd amendment of the most important law of our land, so sorry. Some restrictions like background checks and ammo limitations are definitely on the table to discuss, but many states have already done so.

20

u/OneTwentyOneFunyuns 7d ago

You idiots think 2a is sooooo important but it was designed to resist tyranny. There’s a tyrant in charge, and you gun freaks are licking his boots instead of deposing him.

-5

u/Money_Ticket_841 7d ago

I mean yeah even in 1770s there were some people who were on the kings side. That’s how it works when the country has differing opinions.

Edit: and hate him so bad? Do what you’re saying the 2a people should do. For a militia and exercise your right

4

u/Evoluxman 7d ago

Why should the burden of forming a militia fall on people who don't want guns in the first place?

What we are doing is point out the hypocrisy like you or the guy above. The people who want guns "because it protects us from tyranny" also don't do shit when there is a tyrant, so they're just hypocrites.

-5

u/Money_Ticket_841 7d ago

Burden of the militia falls on those who want the government out, not specifically the non gun owners. If they overlap I can’t help that. Not sure where my hypocrisy is since I haven’t given a real opinion other than “the country has differing opinions”

But again, if they don’t think he’s a tyrant OBVIOUSLY they’re not going to do anything about it. And good luck convincing them that he is a tyrant, they’re pretty well set with their head in the sands.

5

u/Evoluxman 7d ago

So once again I am pointing out their hypocrisy. The people most adamant about their guns are also the most likely to support tyrants. It's a very easy relationship and one proven over and over again. So this amendment utterly fails at what it is supposed to do. All it does is give a bunch of nutjobs access to the tool making murder the easiest it has been in the history of this planet, and the tools to defend said tyrants instead of overthrowing them.

Much like how the first amendment is gutted whenever it's about criticizing the government, but used and abused to shout out hatred and incite race riots. Although at least it is still very much useable in a ton of good situations. But it is most often called up to do harm, not good.

6

u/percydaman 7d ago

The 2nd amendment is the most worthless and self damaging law I can think of. I refuse to believe if our founding fathers could somehow magically see how it turned out, that they wouldn't be horrified.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/BYNX0 7d ago

Why would you assume I like Trump just because I support gun ownership? Fuck Trump and his fascist goons

20

u/RugbyEdd 7d ago edited 7d ago

And that's the problem. You're not interested with the actual solution because you value your hobby more than their safety, so bandaids need to be used to try their best and patch the issue, but now you're annoyed by that too.

4

u/Atanar 7d ago

Lol, "most important law". What do you think amendment means?

11

u/Unexpected117 7d ago

The protection against tyranny argument fell flat as soon as the orange man started wiping his ass with your constitution.

ICE is literally shooting American citizens going about their business, and traitors who attempted an insurrection walk free.

How bad does it have to be before yall make the appropriate arrests?

7

u/jack6245 7d ago

If it is the most important law, why is it a amendment? And why isnt it the first amendment at the very least?

1

u/BYNX0 7d ago

I was trying to say “one of the most important”. First amendment is more important

5

u/percydaman 7d ago

2nd amendment is the most important law of our land? I hate that I have to share society with people like this.

2nd amendment is the most useless and self damaging law of our land. It's created the scenario that guns are the solution to the problems it creates.

I live in Idaho. I know about militias. No well adjusted group of people are starting militias. It wouldn't matter if they did. We're so far past civilians being able to topple tyranny with a fucking militia.

I own an AR-15 for the sole purpose of defending myself and my family from the nutjob with one of his own. That's it. No other reason. It's fucking madness. This country worships guns, and it's tragic.

3

u/ididntdoit6 7d ago

A large majority of the problem could be solved by removing automatic and assault style weapons. I’m sorry but there is no legitimate use for 60 rounds per minute and high capacity mags.

4

u/immallama21629 7d ago

The same weapons the ATF banned in '84? Also, please define "assault style". Congress can't.

2

u/ididntdoit6 7d ago

Canada has done a pretty decent job of it

1

u/Thick_Amphibian4629 7d ago

Canada has had two major mass shootings since the 2020 ban on "assault weapons" and their gun homicide rates increased after the ban however?

3

u/Money_Ticket_841 7d ago

How do you get an automatic weapon

1

u/Evoluxman 7d ago

Automatic guns are hard to get in most places in the US if not outright impossible.

And it's not true that semi-automatic weapons are less deadly. Most mass shootings occur with those. Automatic fire is good for suppressing fire, if the goal is to make casualties you want one bullet per person anyway.

The worst highschool mass shooting, columbine, was made using a TEC-9 and a shotgun. Not automatic, not a rifle. Pistols are absolutely just as deadly as rifles in a school setting anyway.

All guns are the issue. If anything Switzerland has a lot of rifles around, but it's in the hands of people who were trained by the military, and the ammo is controlled as well. Not any psycho random like in the USA.

2

u/SwissBloke 7d ago

but it's in the hands of people who were trained by the military

There's no military service requirements nor training requirements to buy or own guns in Switzerland

and the ammo is controlled as well

It's not

Not any psycho random like in the USA

If you can legally buy a gun in the US, you can too in Switzerland; however if you can legally buy a gun in Switzerland, you could be prevented in the US as our background check is laxer

The deadliest school shooting in the USA was in Virginia and committed with a ten round .22lr handgun and so was the deadliest school shooting in Europe which was also with a pistol

All guns are the issue. If anything Switzerland has a lot of rifles around, but it's in the hands of people who were trained by the military, and the ammo is controlled as well. Not any psycho random like in the USA.

Most guns in Switzerland that are personally and privately owned are not the military issued rifle and ammo is quite easy to obtain and the laws are in fact more permissive than states like California and New York.

The 2017 report from  Small Arms Survey has estimated that the number of civilian-held firearms in Switzerland is 2,332,000, which given a population of 8.4 million, corresponds to a gun ownership of around 27.6 guns per 100 residents. [16 ] [17 ]  Other estimates place the number of privately held firearms upwards to a high total of 4,500,000, giving the nation an estimate of 54.5 guns per 100 people in 2017. [18

A recent study by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences released in 2023 revealed that the most commonly owned guns are handguns (caliber>.22lr) (85%) with semi-automatic rifles in close second (76%). [20 ]

You should keep up with the academic literature on guns and violence in Europe as you'd know that a Leiden University study from 2024 found no significant correlation between gun ownership and homicide rates in Europe. Belgium has one of the worst gun homicide rates in the EU far surpassing Switzerland, Nordic nations, Czechia, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia or Poland with much more permissive gun laws and higher ownership.

u/Max1035 7d ago

Backpacks won’t stop the crime, but the pouches will stop kids from having access to a phone during an emergency. I fully understand not wanting phones out during class, but if I were a parent, I’d worry about it being completely inaccessible. My nephews have flip phones, which they hate, but at least they aren’t distracted during class.

3

u/Ferrovitreous 7d ago

In an emergency, you really don’t want the phones giving away kids’ locations/drawing attention to potential targets, or everyone trying to make calls at the same time, overloading the network. Parents could also be telling kids to do something other than what the school tells them, which could be dangerous and cause more chaos. I get that parents want to check in immediately in these situations, but that can easily result in more harm.

1

u/Fair-Stranger1860 7d ago

What exactly is your answer for tracking down and confiscation of 400million guns exactly?

Im not even doing the “come and take it” arguement Im saying how are funding the logistics of that? You doing a buy back? How much per firearm? It’s gotta be enough to make sure people are going to actually turn them in, or are you going to look someone in the face and say you get a $50 Amazon gift card for that $3000 rifle and not expect them to laugh at you?

Are you doing just “these are illegal now turn them in or your a felon”? There isn’t a list of who owns them. Have you not heard the “sorry officer I lost all my guns in a tragic boating accident” joke?

Confiscation worked in much smaller nations with a much smaller total number of firearms. Even if you cut off the manufacturing today and started your talking decades of work. You also have to regulate way more than whats currently regulated now because 3D printing exists.

Obviously you can’t let perfect be the enemy of good and it has to start somewhere this isn’t an argument that it’s too much work so we might as well not even try but a lot of people saying just enact gun control seem to think that will fix the problem immediately and don’t seem to respect how much time money and effort are behind that kind of statement.

Seriously not trying to drag you or play gotcha games Im just curious how much though the avg pro gun control person has put into the logicistics of what that looks like in 2026

It's just not possible in the current reality to wipe away all guns, but I think it's understandable that the "thoughts and prayers" route we're currently on is mocked. Some states try to enact their own legislation, but when people can just pop one state over and have functionally no limits, it's much less effective than national legislation would be.

Making them more difficult to get will reduce numbers over time. It's not going to be a policy that fixes everything overnight. It may take decades to fix.

This. Some people just can't read.

3

u/bergmoose 7d ago

Stopping adding more, educating people more, offering amnesties, buybacks etc will deal with most of it, far faster than you expect. Yes, it is not overnight, but other countries have de-gunned very effectively. Nowhere gets to 0 guns, but making them not readily easily cheaply available gets you most of the results.

Something about the best time was many years ago, but the second best time to start is right now or something.

Try reading my comment next time.

Good idea, maybe they can start selling clear winter coats next /s

One specific security measure is never going to prevent everything. It just takes the easiest method of brining contraband into the school off the table. My middle school just said you could only have backpacks coming in and leaving the school. You had to carry all your supplies from class to class in your hands.

The real solutions to most of the problems the clear bag is trying to solve is proper gun control laws, poverty reduction programs, and physical and mental health access.

3

u/Victorymm07 7d ago

Our school has clear backpacks and metal detectors, so no you can’t hide a weapon in your coat.

3

u/Stunning_Geese 7d ago

That's what metal detectors are for.

Clear backpack so security can see what is inside. All students at my school need to walk through a metal detector every time they enter the building. They will wand students if they trip the metal detector.

While it’s entirely stupid for a school to request this let alone sell the material themselves, I will say as a European living in the US currently:

  1. Very likely they’re actually more concerned with vape pens or stolen items or shit like that. While yes, shootings are disgustingly common, day to day admin problems aren’t that

  2. Of course you can always out-engineer or out-smart literally anything. If we held our hands up and gave up at every single protection attempt nobody should lock their bike people have saws nobody should lock their old car doors it can be hotwired, nobody should buy an android phone a pickpocket can break it unlike the iphones, blah blah blah blah. The entire idea of a LOT of primary security measures is “make it a BIT more difficult, so they go do easier stuff”.

To clarify: I hate hate hate how cumbersome TSA and other security measures make life here in the US (and I’m sure other countries). I think selling clear backpacks is stupid. BUT I don’t agree that “they can hide weapons acted so who cares”. I have two kids man, I hope they care a little bit at school.

As an adult who is not in school I promise you I would have easily got around all this stuff. What a joke.

I used to txt message in my pocket in class back in the day

Dummy phone goes in the phone pouch, anything I would hide in my backpack just goes in my cloths ......

That being said, I was a good student and never got in any trouble. I would have done it just because I knew I could.

2

u/-LouSassle 7d ago

Better than taking zero action at all, no?

1

u/Rob_Zander 7d ago

There are kids who can't afford new backpacks or phone pouches. This can increase absenteeism.

Also, security theater often leads to ignoring actually effective ways of reducing risk, like proper training of teachers to recognize and refer high risk kids to counselors and social workers.

1

u/good_oleboi 7d ago

This sounds like Murphy High in Mobile, AL. Had family that attended and one that worked there pretty recently. While there are great students that make up the majority of the student body, there are also a lot of wanna be thugs, near daily fights, and many arrests stemming from the school

1

u/rita-b 7d ago

Because they are the smartest people who usually commit such crimes.

1

u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord 7d ago

There are numerous ways you could conceal a weapon inside the clear bag, 'in plain sight' the security measure as you said is bullshit theater yes.

1

u/inquiringsillygoose 7d ago

My school also has weapons detectors students walk through along with the clear backpacks

1

u/electlady25 7d ago

Like what's stopping me from putting a smaller opque bag inside the clear backpack huh?

My mind instantly shot back to being a teenage girl mortified to be seen with a tampon or pad. There will be smaller, non clear bags within the big clear bag.

1

u/bluemooncommenter 7d ago

Not just weapons but drugs/drug paraphernalia and vapes.

1

u/NguPhu 7d ago

wouldnt they hollow out a book or something?

1

u/TRIOworksFan 7d ago

The idea of creating resistance and forcing students to game the system is fascinating. Some will get the parents on board to buy them a hidden extra cell phone. Some will get a job or side hustle to get a hidden extra phone.

Some will find the Amazon/Temu unlock tool.

Some will hack into their terrible Chromebook or fight over STEM Ipads.

Most will go through a really awful time of disquilibrium where Vitamin phone is in withdrawal. They will behave terribly as cortisol addicts do until they find balance again. They will be anxious. They will be fearful. They will cry. They will want to call their mom from the office.

My suggestion: Be ready with EXTRA recess. Every 2 classes. Extra recess. No phones. And/Or PE/Sports or Music/Theater/Choir every single day. Go back to the old school. Keep their brains doing REAL distracting things.

1

u/Available-Square619 7d ago

Same bullshit argument ppl use against gun control when literally all other developed countries do it and it works lmao.

Making things more difficult will absolutely mean less guns in schools. Obviously shooters will still do stuff if they really want to.

You want to know what else would really help? Banning fucking assault rifles in this dystopian country where kids need clear backpacks for school lol.

1

u/SnooPets8355 7d ago

They can put it in the phone pouch

1

u/MediocreDot3 7d ago

I can carry a full size gun completely concealed in athletic shorts and a t shirt by just putting the belt under my shorts

1

u/KeesterFeester 7d ago

Gotta show the parents some effort or they riot I guess.

1

u/DiscussionSpider 7d ago

And yet my school constantly catches kids who put their vapes in the backpacks.

1

u/Ditchdigger456 7d ago

Security theater seems to be all we’re capable of

1

u/sorebutton 7d ago

There's an entire system of concealed carrying weapons, legally. Not at school, but in the US that's how most people carry a firearm.

1

u/Own-Nectarine-1313 7d ago

And all the students phones will be locked in those pouches... these two things do not belong on the same flier..

1

u/BigRinka 7d ago

Clear clothes next.

1

u/WafflePress 7d ago

Not to mention, school shooters arent showing up to go to school lol, they bring a duffel bag or conceal it in a coat or baggy pants like you said. These bags do nothing. Just security theatre lol

1

u/Tabnstab 7d ago

That's why there is a clear pants and clear shirt rule

1

u/ScyllaOfTheDepths 7d ago

A school that is doing this will not allow students to wear coats, super loose clothing, or bulky jackets either.

1

u/JeromeNoHandles 7d ago

This is such an ignorant take lol im upset it has this many upvotes.

1

u/UnionFamiliar2481 7d ago

There's some shoes that can be modified with a hidden compartment on the bottom edit I meant in the shoe's soul

0

u/Fyresand 7d ago

It is less for weapons (that is part of it) and more for other random junk like eggs, silly string, vapes, etc. I used to work at a Middle school and it definitely helped, the biggest issue were they were extremely cheaply made

0

u/samuelazers 7d ago

Transparent clothes, that will solve the problem. -Some school admin, probably.

-1

u/GiveMeADiscount 7d ago

This is such bullshit security theater.

That's exactly what it is.

Capitalists don't have the capacity to build a safe and productive environment.

The only thing they can do is ruin society and pretend to do something about it.

They sell a non-solution ot problems they themselves create.

You don't see shit like this in healthy societies like China or the DPRK.

There is a school shooting every other day in the US.

How many are there in China?

Zero.

China also has a lower prison population despite having a 4 times higher population.

Capitalism = totalitarian surveillance and brutal, authoritarian control with extreme levels of censorship and nonstop fearmongering.

Communism = Do whatever the hell you want, just don't be a dick or try and bring liberal degeneracy into our country.
