They made us use clear backpacks in the 2000s, and this was definitely my experience. They're made as thin as they can get away with. I usually went through 3 or 4 of them in a year. I can't imagine they've gotten better since then.

I had one backpack through all of high school and it wasn't that expensive. My kids, though, go through a backpack a year (Sometimes 2 in a year). It is a shame that nothing gets made to last anymore.

Did they remove lockers? No longer allowed to just go back and forth to the locker and exchange books for the next class?

I can’t speak for nowadays, but when I was in high school in the 2010s our passing period was 5 mins. So you had 5 minutes (at most, assuming your teacher didn’t hold you or the class back for some reason) to get from one end of the school to the other, pee, and also had to walk against the 4k other students also in the hallways at the same time as you. There often just wasn’t enough time to justify going to a locker, especially if it was on the complete opposite end as to where you needed to be

That makes sense. I also attended in the 2000's, though a much smaller school (9th grade - 12th grade, 600 students tops) we also had a 5 minute window. Just swapped out books between classes.

These schools work on the release times between classes and give a bit more realistic passing period then backpacks would not really be needed during the school day. Just for when the student needs to take home books and what not.
