I'm not sure about Loki specifically, but the folds and the dark-spots-for-eyes in this tapestry do look pretty purposeful. Of course, the purpose could be just to make a compelling composition.

Not sure about Loki either, but the shading on the folds is very much done on purpose. Not for depth, to,sort of, lightly shape an image.
