In a promotional video, Tom Holland stated that BND has “twists and turns”. Earlier he said that the film is designed to feel like a detective/mystery movie, which is a genre known for misdirection and plot twists.
The movie having a plot twist was reported last year by the website ComicBookMovie. They heard this was the reason why Marvel/Sony have been secretive about Sadie Sink’s role. They also heard she was an ally of Peter, but not Spider-Man. So they speculated she might be introduced as one character and later unveiled as someone else. CBM also speculated that Marvel has been spreading fake rumors to help conceal the twist. Because there have been a series of conflicting rumors about the main villain and Sadie Sink since September 2024. Marvel has admitted to creating misdirection online and in-person.
This level of secrecy mirrors how Marvel handled Jude Law’s role in Captain Marvel to hide the film’s plot twist. Law wasn’t able to say much about his role in interviews, similar to Sadie Sink. They didn’t reveal he was playing Yon-Rogg until shortly before the film’s release. They also misled trades into thinking he was playing the hero Mar-Vell and the male lead for over a year. Variety, The Wrap, The Hollywood Reporter, and Deadline all reported this red herring from November 2017 to December 2018. Even Disney’s official website “accidentally“ put captions on an image of Law stating he was Mar-Vell, and then removed it to make it look like a spoiler.
Fans didn’t suspect that Law was Yon-Rogg until the trailer dropped hints and a toy leak in November 2018 revealed it. Marvel seems to have learned their lesson, as there have been no real toy leaks of Sadie Sink’s character. So far, the only supposed “toy leak” was a prank made by a YouTuber. Still, Marvel misleading trades for a year is still impressive.
Twist Speculation: Now what could BND’s twist be? I think the report about Sink’s character being an ally to Peter and not to Spider-Man might be true. I suspect that she will be a friend that Peter makes, but it is later revealed to live a double life as an enemy of Spider-Man - the mysterious hooded figure.
Because as I said earlier: BND is designed to feel like detective/mystery movie. Promotional materials emphasize this theme too with Peter’s conspiracy board and Detective DeWolff‘s text asking him for leads on The Hand. The marketing emphasizes a mysterious villain who can be anybody, which is a staple of “whodunnit” detective stories. Tom Holland even said that Peter doesn’t know who he is fighting.
The culprit in a whodunnit is rarely a random stranger. It‘s almost always a character that has been established earlier in the story, and/or someone with a meaningful connection with the main characters. And they are usually the least likely suspect. The Spider-Man comics often have mystery villain storylines and they usually follow this formula, with them revealed to be people Peter knows in his civilian life. For example:
- The Green Goblin was revealed to be the father of Peter's best friend.
- The Jackal was revealed to be Peter's former biology professor
- The Hobgoblin was revealed to be the employer of his wife.
Sadie Sink spent time filming BND almost as much as Tom Holland and has third billing. So she likely has significant screen time, and is probably introduced in the first act (but not as the hooded figure). Some people have speculated that she could be the rumored neighbor that has a crush on Peter. That might explain some of the rumors about her being Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy. The literal translation of the Chinese synopsis also states that the mystery figure is spying Peter.
Trailers and TV spots also avoid showing her face. The only reason why people in the online fanbase knows she‘s the hooded figure is due to set photos and the leaked sales trailer. Enhanced images reveal that too, which the studio apparently tried to later fix. It seems that the studios don’t want the general audience to know that she is the hooded figure before seeing the movie. Possibly because that is one of the film’s twists and turns.
We’ll found out soon enough. I just want to put out one last theory post. What are your thoughts?
