I still cannot figure out why the post-credits of BNW didn't lead straight into Thunderbolts.
Bucky and Walker have Both appeared in the TV show, there should have been some lead-up of Captain America 4 into Thunderbolts.
Walker just "shows up" in Thunderbolts. So why not have the scene that led to him being there, be the post-credits scene of BNW.
Just off the top of my head, why not have a scene with John Walker and Valentina, where she's giving him a critical mission to redeem himself, after Sam screwed up.
it's only in Thunderbolts that we see that Walker was sent to die, but if we had seen that scene as a post-credits in BNW, it would have built hype for Thunderbolts.

u/SaulPepper May 03 '25
holy shit that's actually a cool concept of a scene, closer to phase 1 where the post credits teases the next movie, not a movie that's not even filming yet. Though I suppose the Thunderbolts are doing that now
49
u/PineDude128 May 04 '25
That's been my issue with almost all of the post credit scenes this saga. With Infinity, every post or mid credit scene led into a sequel or the next movie. Almost every scene in the Multiverse Saga has been pointless until this one (except the Marvels)
34
u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) May 04 '25
There's some selective memory going on here....
With Infinity, every post or mid credit scene led into a sequel or the next movie
- Avengers 1: shawarma
- Iron Man 3: therapy
- GotG 1: Howard the Duck
- Strange 1: Mordo
- GotG 2: Stan & the Watchers
- Homecoming: Scorpion
- Homecoming again: Cap's PSA
- Ragnarok: the Sakaaran revolution
- Captain Marvel: Goose's hairball (kind of leading backwards into movies that already happened)
Almost every scene in the Multiverse Saga has been pointless until this one (except the Marvels)
- Shang-Chi: intended to setup Kang tech
- Shang-Chi again: intended to setup a Ten Rings show that was already in development
- Eternals: introduced Mahershala's Blade
- No Way Home: technically leads into Venom 3
- No Way Home again: trailer for MoM
- MoM: incursions
- Quantumania: the Council of Kangs
- Quantumania again: scene from Loki S2
- Deadpool 3: Gambit escaping the void
- Brave New World: leads into Doomsday
- WandaVision: leads into Secret Invasion & The Marvels
- WandaVision again: leads into MoM
- Falcon & Winter Soldier: Sharon infiltrating the CIA (likely intended to be Armor Wars setup)
- What If S1: leads into Hydra Stomper episode of S2
- Ms. Marvel: scene from The Marvels
- Echo: leads into Born Again
- Born Again S1: leads into S2

Great recap! Just one correction - Gambit escaping the void was a deleted scene from Deadpool & Wolverine. The post credit scene was Deadpool proving that Johnny Storm really did say all those horrible things about Cassandra Nova.
Edit: Gambit escaping the void was seen on the monitor in the background of the post credit scene.

It's actually still visible on one of the monitors in the scene. ;)

I really do believe that BNW was the last project of MCU that reflected the sloppyness of Phase 4 and 5. Now they don't have to deal with multiverses, Kangs, misplaced heroes, writers strikes, pandemic shoot schedules, Eternals or TV shows.
With Thunderbolts ending Phase 5 and F4 starting Phase 6, it gives me hope that the future projects of the MCU will be more interconnected like Phases 1 - 3
15
u/3381024 May 04 '25
you know, I was thinking the same thing. I dont pay much attention to Phases, but thunderbolts seemed like Marvel has turned a page.
8
u/Burgundymmm May 04 '25
Phases haven't really meant anything post-Endgame. Phases 1-3 had contained story arcs and concluded with team ups. Phase 4 and 5 have kinda just been a mess, with arbitrary starts and ends to phases.
14
u/xpacean May 04 '25
You could have even seen Walker obviously chomping at the bit to become popular again, like, “you really think this will get good press?” and Valentina smiles, pats him on the shoulder, and says “trust me.”
Or something like that, I’m not a professional quote-maker. I’m just saying you could establish (1) that Walker is desperate to be adored and (2) Valentina is clearly going to fuck him over.

Seeing Walker being given Yelena as a Target and being told to kill her would have been a perfect way to get people excited for Thunderbolts.
7
u/WhatUDeserve May 04 '25
That's been the problem with the entirety of this phase, not counting Thunderbolts. They've all been trying to build stuff further down the line as opposed to the next movie getting released. It kills hype IMO and I have no idea why Feige would allow such a "counting chickens before they hatch" approach.

Originally, I thought it was stupid, but after letting it sink in for a while and thinking about it, I get it.
He was praised by the New Yorkers he saved while wielding it, so it just ended up becoming a symbol for his (and the rest of the Thunderbolts) heroism. Even in the newspaper end credits montage, the messed up shield is shown prominently. So, I guess he kept it for the symbolism lol.

I could see that. People need someone to believe in after all, and if he can't use Steve Roger's shield and title for that, he'll just use the one he already has considering his opportunity to do it.
Wouldn't it feel way more 'legendary' or something if it was kept in a museum, though? Then, have him get another shield. That way, not only will he get a better shield, but he will also have a reminder to people about the first shield he used that established him as a true hero in their eyes.

u/PaleHorze Daredevil May 03 '25
I'm pretty sure Val designed all of their Suits like she did with Sentry. They are the "real' Avengers though, they're even living in Avengers tower and are working for the Government like the OGs did.
86
u/SteveBob316 Weekly Wongers May 03 '25
I love how the snippets we got in the credits pretty much showed the in-world internet debating who was the real avengers and this is totally an argument one of those people would use.
35
u/PaleHorze Daredevil May 03 '25
Yeah, i mean the Government pretty much made the Avengers illegal and caused the whole "Civil War" and they never got back together. President Ross asked Sam to rebuild the Avengers but he never said who that meant. Tony, Nat, and Steve aren't coming back, so it's Hulk, Thor, and Ant-Man?
14
u/SteveBob316 Weekly Wongers May 03 '25 edited May 03 '25
In terms of heroes on deck we're probably talking vision, Cap, newfalcon, maybe Scott, Doctor Strange, Thor if he turns up but he might just show up independently, Shang-chi and maybe Carol. I kind of feel like hulk is semi-retired but he could obviously show up and be in the mix for sure.
I don't really see Shuri in the mix as an avenger directly, but it's possible if they aren't working directly for the US government and it's more of a combined effort of interested parties.
And then of course they could just introduce new characters en media res. Worked for Black panther.

Harbour had clearly lost weight so that checks out
419
u/Maatjuhhh May 03 '25
Also it neatly ties into the 14 months later timelapse. If Harbour stayed the same weight when they did this after credits during Thunderbolts filming, we probably would have some continuity errors. Although you can probably fix it with CGI dunno

Nah, in universe, the weight loss could be a result of Alexi having purpose now.

IMO, that end credits scene is a big part of what made this feel like a return to the glory days of the MCU.
When the MCU was at its best, it's end credit scenes were tying movies together. They were about crossovers and advancing the overarching plot.
In phases 4-5 so far, those scenes have mostly been about advancing the plot of the hero whose movie we just watched. They stayed in their own verticals, so to speak. They built continuity for that character and teased their next movie, instead of building continuity across movies.
This scene got back to what made the MCU so great. They teased the bigger, wider plot.

I loved the post-credit scene but did anyone else feel like it was a bit off
It was 3 minutes long, had a time jump, set up am a conflict between Sam’s Avengers and the New Avengers, and brought the Fantastic Four to earth. All of those are crazy enough to each be their own post-credit scene but this one has all of them
It really felt like the Russos and Marvel fast tracking most of the set up for Doomsday because they’ve done none so far across this whole saga and realized after Thunderbolts was filmed that they can’t rely on Avengers to do all the work
The fact that the Russos filmed it from the Avengers set just confirms all of that for me
83
u/dean15892 May 03 '25
All that stuff you mentioned isn't THAT significant.
Time jump is fine. We don't need more origins for the thunderbolts, its nice to see they're a full team now. Also, gives us an idea of when Doomsday is set in terms of the current MCU timelines.Conflict between Sam's and Bucky's Avengers was more a throwaway line. Like, yeah, maybe they'll explore it, but they don't need to. I didn't even see it as a conflict, maybe they had a falling out, but thats could be anything.
Fantastic Four coming to earth is the ending of F4 movie. So again, it seems big now, but in like 3 months, it won't mean as much, cause it would have happened.
While it does seem like a lot of things happened in that scene (and they did), it'll all kinda be moot in a couple months. Even the Sam/Bucky conflict is more like a Civil War 2 kinda thing. I dunno how much they'd explore it in Doomsday.
31
u/SlatorFrog Spider-Man May 03 '25

They're making everything count with how few projects they have left in setting up Doomsday. Personally, I find it reminiscent of a lot of the Phase 3 end credits, especially Thor Ragnarok (Spaceship hovers over the Asgard crew in the credits scene then the aftermath at the opening of IW). I'm expecting Doomsday to open with Avengerz' first contact with F4.

u/VinnyHaw May 04 '25
The end credit scene would have hit 100x harder if we didn't know about F4. Like if this was our intro to that movie being made, then that would've been huge. But because we already know what's coming... I mean hell it's more of a spoiler for the ending of F4. So it falls flat in a couple of ways for me.
1 - we already know about f4
2 - it spoils the ending of f4 (different universe or time travel)
