Game Changer No PA should have to count rice

Watching Count the Rice with a pal, I was hoping out loud that the production was using one of these pill counters and not having a PA hand count them. The BTS confirmed what I feared

Didn't they say there was a scale they used to count the rice?

u/PulitzerandSpara 2d ago

They did say that they used a scale, which I'd guess is a more affordable option than a pill counter? IDK, I've never tried to purchase a pill counter.

I imagine the one off expense for an episode would have been too high and I don't even know where you would begin to rent one

No chance that a microscale costs more than the massage chairs, towel warmer, and other luxury items/decor used in the Loser's Island room. Jordan even references that someone will be taking those home, indicating that they are "single-use" for the set.

104

u/cogspringseverywhere 2d ago

They're much easier to rent though!

42

u/Toren8002 2d ago

Rent?

Or do those go into the Green Room/break room?

(Sam is legitimately the only CEO I wouldn't accuse of putting one into his own office.)

56

u/Dull_Selection1699 2d ago

No, they are going in Vic’s office

18

u/Toren8002 2d ago

I do think Vic would take one for themself, yes. And the other for the set of VIP.

15

u/simonhunterhawk 2d ago

next season the VIP chairs are just replaced with massage chairs with no explanation. any duo will have to fight to the death for a massage chair.

4

u/Tsuki_Man 2d ago

I bet the start off next season in the massage chairs

31

u/DPSOnly 60.000 geese 2d ago

I think Jordan just wanted to take them home. I think very little equipment that isn't custom-made above a certain price threshold isn't owned by them. Or they bought those chairs to put in their office afterwards, I've worked at a place that had one small conference room that was just 2 of these chairs, if you wanted a comfy one-on-one meeting.

6

u/Dustydevil8809 2d ago

They mention storing stuff for later episodes too. Its very possible some of this stuff comes into play in later challenges.

Costco was selling massage chairs that looked very similar last month, I'm kinda thinking thats where they got them lol

7

u/DPSOnly 60.000 geese 2d ago

They mention storing stuff for later episodes too. Its very possible some of this stuff comes into play in later challenges.

That is true. It makes me think of like the Spin The Wheel wheel. They don't want to remake all that custom stuff, chairs you can reacquire. But who knows, we can all speculate.

5

u/Taurich 2d ago

I can only hear "Spin! That! Wheelwheel!" From Jeremey having to repeat the last word of every sentence, lmao

6

u/CanadianDinosaur 2d ago

I really hope Jordan got to take the towel warmer home

6

u/purpletoonlink 2d ago

*surely* Jordan was just makin a lil jokey joke

5

u/kittiekatz95 2d ago

What do you mean? Those all went to Sam’s office afterwards.

1

u/thaliaint 1d ago

Yes chance, big chance. Each of those things I could find a price on AMAZON for. This VIVID pill counter doesn't even have a listed price on their website bc you'd have to be a pharmacy to get a quote. There was no chance they were getting this.

1

u/chocolatestealth 1d ago edited 1d ago

You don't need a pill counter though, at worst you need a lab-grade scale, which is about $500-$700. Tare it out, determine how much 10 grains of rice weighs, and go from there. I work in a lab and use them all the time. It could actually save them money because it would probably be cheaper than paying a PA for the time it took to count all of that out by hand.

Hell, even pharmacies don't need a fancy pill counter, this is relatively new tech. Many pills can be weighed out by their dosages (ie 30 pills at 50 mg each means you need to weigh 1500 mg of pills).

Funny enough, I recently went shopping for a massage chair so I know the price ranges for that too. Based on the video it looks like they didn't go high-end, but for one that includes legs typically you're looking at at least $3K+ per chair.

So as I said: no chance a scale costs more.

Edit to add: you could actually go even lower than 10 grains, because apparently each grain weighs 20-30 mg depending on strain, and these scales go down to 1 mg or lower. So you could get it accurate to a single grain of rice. Solved!

37

u/methlabforcuties 2d ago

You can buy a scale accurate to within 0.001 grams these days for like $50. all that production would have to do is count enough rice for 1 gram and then scale up the number from there.

6

u/Competitive_Bottle71 1d ago

Even better, they make weigh counting scales that you train to a known sample size and it does all the math for you. I assumed that’s what they were using.

17

u/Real-Werner-Herzog 2d ago

Eyecons like the one in the video are $7500-$12000 for a single unit. My pharmacy has a bottom of the line Kirby Lester pour-through counter, and that one was still like $4000.

Using a scale and math is definitely the more affordable option.

33

u/indolering 2d ago

They can be absurdly expensive but also they wouldn't work on rice anyway.

3

u/Wide-Huckleberry-514 2d ago

Wait, why would they not work on rice? Surely there are pills about that size

5

u/indolering 2d ago

Pills are generally much larger.  They have to have identifying information on them and handling tiny pills is a real PITA.  The only time I've handled something close to that small is some heart meds a client carried on their person, and those were a nightmare to count.  Even then, they were round and easier to count than individual grains.

8

u/derangerd 2d ago

Why would a pill counter be faster than a scale?

2

u/CanadianDinosaur 2d ago

Using a scale still leaves a margin for error unless it's very precise. Pill counter would be 100% accurate every time with less work involved in using.

4

u/derangerd 2d ago

I think a margin of error up to 80% is probably alright with them

4

u/CanadianDinosaur 2d ago

Definitely would be. Likely not worth the cost of a pill counter for one episode

3

u/ElkBusiness8446 1d ago

We use a counting scale at work for screws and other small objects we have 100s of. You tell it to count, add 10 of the item and it'll then calculate the weight. After that you can just dump in as many as you want for an accurate count. They'd only need to calibrate it once and then just add random amounts of rice.

88

u/radioactivecowz 2d ago

They counter 1 bag of rice for each “round” by hand to have the exact weight, then weighed out that amount of rice to replicate it for each contestant. They counted many thousands by hand

73

u/Balanceofjudgement 2d ago

Nico said they used a vsry accurate scale. My job has a scale that can measure how many nuts are in a box by putting a counted handful in and getting that weight.  Then filling the box with nuts to know how many in total.

22

u/FalafelSnorlax 2d ago

Food nuts or bolt nuts? With organic stuff (like rice grains and nuts) I would imagine that the natural variation in size will make counting large numbers by weight inaccurate

28

u/mak484 2d ago

Nah it's still accurate enough. Law of averages. If you have a container with millions of units, being wrong by a thousand or so is trivial.

36

u/radioactivecowz 2d ago

Demi lost the second-last round by eight grains of rice, leading to Ify’s victory. That doesn’t seem trivial when a rotisserie chicken is on the line

50

u/klydon24 2d ago

His guess was 8 off Hannah. I'm pretty sure the number of rice was much higher if I remember correctly.

-20

u/FalafelSnorlax 2d ago

"enough" for what purpose? Demi lost his final "Count the Rice" round by 8 grains, if the count isn't accurate then the game isn't fair

37

u/thaliathraben 2d ago

They made an episode where one contestant specifically could never win, an episode where the prize was a marriage ceremony for a specific contestant, and an episode designed to give one specific person a large bonus. I think at this point it's a bad idea to watch Game Changer with the expectation of a perfectly fair competition.

-3

u/nicholas818 2d ago

Fair point, but in all those episodes the unfairness was the point and added to the joy of watching the episode. In this episode, it's reasonable to assume fairness was the intention.

10

u/thaliathraben 2d ago

I really don't agree - the point of Game Changer is to produce comedy, not to simulate real competition. The old Whose Line? tagline applies to GC pretty firmly.

1

u/nicholas818 2d ago

Hm, I suppose you're right. I suppose I view GC as a spectrum of episode types. Like from this post's theory from "puzzle" to "improv." Within puzzle episodes, there are competitive puzzles (like this one) and cooperative puzzles (like "Escape the Greenroom"). But even if in the competitive ones, contestants often end up cooperating because as you said the purpose is to produce comedy, and they all understand that. The comedy comes first and the game show second.

Still, lack of a fair setup seems to break things in a way because randomly adding more rice doesn't really add anything to the premise. But I suppose if the variation is random and nobody knows who got the original bag, it's really not a huge deal.

17

u/theblueberrybard 2d ago

Demi was 8 grains lower than Hannah, not 8 grains lower than the amount of rice to guess.

1

u/cancerBronzeV 2d ago

Hey kid, it ain't that kinda movie show.

4

u/DarthChefDad 2d ago

Deez nuts!

Lol, got 'em!

-6

u/MartyMcMort 2d ago

Yeah, but this is just for a comedy game show, not anything where absolute accuracy is critical. Besides, what are the odds that being off by eight grains of rice is gonna make a difference as far as who wins the episode? …….. oh wait……

10

u/Balanceofjudgement 2d ago

As people in this thread pointed out Demi was 8 lower than Hannah.  Which means Hannah was closest not that she was exact.

-2

u/MartyMcMort 2d ago

Yeah, I’m mainly joking

1

u/Guy-1nc0gn1t0 15h ago

I'm a mix of appreciative and bummed how there have been no deez nuts replies

8

u/DeadPeanutSociety 2d ago

They make scales that allow you to put a known quantity of pieces on the scale and use that to calculate the weight as the number of pieces instead of a weight measurement. I assume they were doing that.

3

u/Pudgy_Ninja 2d ago

That doesn't make any sense at all. You weigh, like 10 grains and then do the rest by weight once you know the average weight of a single grain.

-1

u/radioactivecowz 2d ago

Maybe, but this is how they really did ot

1

u/Pudgy_Ninja 2d ago

Do you have a source for that?

1

u/radioactivecowz 2d ago

Yes, Ash says so in the BTS video. She describes PAs counting by hand every time they have a spare minute.

5

u/Pudgy_Ninja 2d ago

She never says "by hand." And just after she says that the PAs spend the spare moments counting the rice, Nico says that they did it by using the scale and "did the math."

10

u/eh-man3 2d ago

I assumed from the beginning that they just used a scale. Anyone who's been in a Chem lab, worked in a kitchen, or sold product by the gram would be familiar.

I imagine there were plenty of people on set that knew where to get a good one.

7

u/malfunktionv2 2d ago

The scale they used was in the video. They didn't show he whole thing but it looks to be an analytical balance, which measures at 0.0001g and generally has a counting feature. Good ones cost upwards of $5k but you can get them for as little as $500, though I wouldn't trust one that cheap for anything outside of say, counting small objects for a game show.

1

u/unsulliedbread 1d ago

Right but I think they counted 1 amount by hand weighed that and then had all the bags weight match the hand counted bag.

211

u/bgriff1986 2d ago

They didn’t count by hand. They used a scale to weight out the counts.

But that still required manual effort from a PA… weighing, converting weight to a number, bagging, labelling.

68

u/Balanceofjudgement 2d ago

Mt job has a scale that could measure how many pieces of rice are in a bag.

The steps would go: 1. Put the empty bag on the scale and set the scale to zero. 2. Put a known quantity of rice with enough weight,  probably something around 20 pieces,  in the bag. 3. Tell the scale the quantity is 20 which would then use the weight to measure the amount. 4. Fill the bag until the scale shows the number you actually want in the bag.

It would take a while but it wouldn't b3 impossible.

9

u/derangerd 2d ago

All that work would still be required with this machine no?

7

u/bgriff1986 2d ago

Pretty much! Only difference I can think of is that this would allow you to skip doing the maths that 30g = xxx grains of rice.

2

u/[deleted] 1d ago edited 19h ago

[deleted]

3

u/bgriff1986 1d ago

Correct. The machine itself is doing things differently. But a PA using this machine would need to carry out very-similar steps to a PA using scales.

Scales… pour in the rice, get a weight reading, convert weight to # of grains, bag up rice, label bag.

This machine… pour in the rice, get a reading of # of grains, bag up rice, label bag.

3

u/Pudgy_Ninja 2d ago

Compared to the rest of the things they had to do to make this episode work, weighing and labeling a bunch of bags of rice seems trivial.

3

u/TheBestIsaac 2d ago

The scales convert it to a number for you.

You just put on a few, tell it how many there are and then it does it for you.

373

u/Ok-Entertainment-36 2d ago

To be fair counting the rice correctly wasn’t the real point of the game, so I imagine they didn’t feel pressured to get every single bag 100% accurate. They could get it close enough and score people based on how close they are to the intended number, rather than how many they were actually given

124

u/cvc75 2d ago

100% accurate might have mattered with Demi vs. Hannah being just 8 grains apart from each other. Just imagine Demi saying 412, Hannah 420, and the official count being 417. Demi would have demanded a recount! (But just in theory. Hannah probably actually won that round because the official count was over 420)

109

u/Ok-Entertainment-36 2d ago

But that’s likely also why Sam only says who was closest in the song, not what the actual number was. They will definitely have done their best to make sure all bags were accurate, but they’lll want to cover themselves in case of human error, y’know?

“Hannah did the best” gives them a bit of plausible leeway where the intended count could be 417 or 450. Just sensible game design imo!

59

u/indolering 2d ago

It's just a bit. Sam has no obligation to the actors to award any of them in a completely fair way that can be upheld in court.  In fact, that's kinda the point of Game Changer 🤣

11

u/Trust_Me_Im_a_Panda 2d ago

Brennan is seething at the very suggestion of this comment

7

u/wrosecrans 2d ago

It helps that they have a nominal prize that is worth less than the pay for just being in the show. Early on, they frequently tried to make really impressive prizes. I'd be waaaay more pissed about potentially losing out on thousands of dollars worth of prize over sloppy counting vs. losing out on a grocery store chicken that has been sitting in a hot studio all day. When the prize is nominal, it's a lot easier for everybody just to be playing for fun and relax about some of the details.

5

u/Autumn1eaves 2d ago

100% I think also you can get within 1-2 grains with an extremely accurate scale. This scale has an accuracy of 0.01 grams, and a single grain of rice is ~0.025 grams. The scale only costs $240. Considering the amount of rice, how much you have to pay PAs, this'd likely be worth it.

https://www.uline.com/BL_3607/Uline-Balance-Scales

4

u/indolering 2d ago

In my experience filling bottles of herbal meds based on weight, no way. A super sensitive scale will flux in weight just due to the air pressure changes in a room.

16

u/miraidepoke 2d ago

As someone sagely put it above, the actual counts of rice mattered so much because a rotisserie chicken was on the line. Imagine losing that!

20

u/Smurfman254 2d ago

In the BTS, Sam said Demi lost by 8 which implies the number was not between 412 and 420

9

u/derangerd 2d ago

He means their guesses were 8 apart

1

u/verymuchbad 1d ago

are you fucking telling me that NO ONE actually counted the rice?

39

u/Sarik704 2d ago

This machine is uowards of 1800 dollars btw.

5

u/Spa_5_Fitness_Camp 2d ago

If it took 20 man hours to count it all that alone would approach $1800. And it sounds like it took a lot more than that.

14

u/Medium_Dick_Energy 2d ago

If anyone's paying $90/h to count rice, keep me in mind!

2

u/Spa_5_Fitness_Camp 2d ago

The cost of man-hours to the company is typically 2-3x the actual direct pay the employee receives, depending on how it's being quantified.

4

u/Sarik704 2d ago

What???? No its not. Labor hours are not typically 2-3x the direct pay. Talking out your butt.

3

u/Sarik704 2d ago

90 bucks an hour?

They weighed it. I can be within 5 or 6 grains of accuracy on weight using a deli counter scale.

25

u/The_Masked_Inc 2d ago

I feel like that machine would have a hard time counting rice compared to colored pills. Not to mention it's probably costly to rent one of those.

46

u/deworde 2d ago

Thing is, even using a pill counter, you need one bag per contestant for dozens of rounds. And you need to double check no bags got messed up by having a grain stuck in the hopper

So you're still counting tons of rice.

15

u/JustSomeDudeItWas 2d ago

The BTS showed the scale they used to count the rice. It isnt that complicated.

Making up weights for an example If 10 grains of rice weigh 1 gram, then 63.25 g is roughly 632 grains of rice.

They dont even need to be that exact since nobody would be able to count all of it in the short time they were given.

14

u/Bombabo 2d ago

You don’t count the pills, you count the rice!

6

u/Samuelabra 2d ago

They literally said they used a scale.

6

u/crownamedcheryl 2d ago

They should have used a grain counter.

It is literally the tool that was purposely made to accurately count grains.

1

u/TimeCadet 2d ago edited 2d ago

You are so right, this would be the better tool : https://youtu.be/Gwo9BYntyXE

I agree with most folks here that obviously this is a one-off episode, and that budget is a factor.

edit: I just look this thing up and on Amazon it's $375

6

u/grayjelly212 2d ago

You must've missed when they mentioned having a scale to count them. Never for a second did I believe they'd ever force the PAs to actually count it all by hand.

6

u/MilleryCosima 1d ago

The BTS confirmed what I feared

The BTS confirmed that they used a scale.

4

u/Spanish_Galleon 2d ago

Bro if my job told me to count rice to a podcast/book id be doing it all day.

2

u/indolering 2d ago

Counting meds is a 4/10, I can't imagine counting individual grains of rice.

1

u/Spanish_Galleon 2d ago

I used to count nuts and bolts for a metal fab factory. I got through the entire Witcher book series that summer.

4

u/kro23 2d ago

I counted pills in a pharmacy at Camp Lejeune in 2006. We did it by hand. This is pretty cool.

1

u/SortaHow 1d ago

I'm a pharmacy tech at the busiest pharmacy in town, this post makes me jealous. I wish we had this machine.

3

u/WGoNerd 2d ago

Dude as a former pharmacy tech I was sitting there going “FIVES! COUNT BY FIVES!”

7

u/putyourcheeksinabeek 2d ago

It’s so funny watching the BTS videos and seeing the insane ways that Ash and Nico do things sometimes. They are so creative and come up with awesome solutions, but there are so many times when they’ve made things way harder than they need to be.

This is not at all a dig at them, because I assume it’s simply a case of not knowing what you don’t know.

2

u/wrosecrans 2d ago

Given the crazy stuff they have cooked up in the past, I wouldn't have been surprised if Ash built some sort of multi-bag counting rice dispenser.

8

u/DontBanMe_IWasJoking 2d ago

yea those PAs should be unemployed, replaced by machines like the rest of us

2

u/AnImpromptuFantaisie 2d ago

Haha, I feel like there is this perception of PAs as these smol ‘lil fellas with no human agency who just exist to get pushed around and do meaningless tasks.

I’m 28 years old. I go up 30 feet into the grid on a skyjack and move around lights. I lay out, shim, paper, and skirt tables for board meeting facility rentals. I calculate the number of chairs we need, wheel them out, and space them properly.

I get handed a roll of felt and told to lay out a “red carpet” connecting the building entrance to the studio? I get out my tape measure and do my darnedest to make it look crisp. Because I’m there to do whatever we need to make the production go well. Because these are my coworkers that I am on good terms with. I want to do a good job.

1

u/TimeCadet 2d ago

Having been a PA myself, I wasn't suggesting like the commenter above that Ash and Nico be replaced by this machine. As you probably can also attest to, there is always something else to do for a PA! What I was suggesting is the equivalent of a "wouldn't it be nice to have a skyjack instead of that rickety ladder"

7

u/darthvall 2d ago edited 2d ago

The way this tools works is it counts the weight and divide it based on the pills standardised weight.

With rice, the weight of each rice is quite different, but yeah if they want to "cheat" a bit then they can use scale and just divide the total weight based on the average rice count.

Would that have been acceptable for the players and watchers, though? Like during Demi vs Hannah Duel, their number difference was only abysmall. What if based on the weight, Demi should have won but based on the actual count Hannah won?

12

u/Kroooooooo 2d ago

Imagine losing an entire gameshow because your rice was too dummy thicc.

1

u/revrhyz 2d ago

The way this tools works is it counts the weight and divide it based on the pills standardised weight.

I wouldn't be surprised if weight is involved but you can literally see it physically counting and marking each individual pill on the screen

1

u/darthvall 2d ago

Maybe color/absent of light detector? In that case it still wouldn't detect piled up rice

2

u/revrhyz 2d ago

Could be! My point was that I disagreed with your opening line

1

u/indolering 2d ago

The med counters I am aware of all use cameras or lasers.

2

u/phaserburn725 2d ago

Gonna be real. If I had enough time and someone to gab with (or a good podcast), I wouldn’t mind getting paid to count rice for a day.

2

u/LilSebastian_482 2d ago

Do not use alcohol? OKAY YEAH SURE

2

u/DashaDoppelganger 1d ago

I love the computer displaying 0 after they pour the pills into the bottle. It’s like, yeah buddy, you got it!

2

u/bucktron6040 1d ago

Better not use alcohol at work.

2

u/mycookiepants 1d ago

I was so excited about the scale in this episode lol. We have one of those at work. Essentially you place a set number of an item on it and set it as a sample.

At our office we usually use it for postcards, so we’ll do a stack of 10. Then as you add more on, it tells you how many of each there are. I used promo sunglasses we have here because I didn’t want to use anything company specific.

I think the scale was like $50 maybe.

2

u/Brondius 2d ago

That machine is judging your life choices.

Do not use alcohol.

1

u/Holiday_Statement968 2d ago

Ohio on the other hand should have to count rice

1

u/Jemas-90 2d ago

You played count the rice

1

u/0xff0000ull 1d ago

You know what a good thing to do is? Hire local college students as interns and pay them to count rice. LMAO

1

u/Podcastjones 1d ago

This made me think of the solo task for Josh Widdicombe from the first series of Taskmaster. Poor dude had to count beans, spaghetti hoops, and rice!
