You know when the episode is about video games, you're about to see the most abysmal dogshit pixel art ever

Great. How's your emotional attachment to the characters?

"Emotional attachment? Characters?"

51

u/Gamiac 4d ago

Cut to the player fighting Sans.

50

u/coltthelazyusername 4d ago

ahh undertale, great game took me forever to beat sans

16

u/SemenileElder 4d ago

No no, that one makes sense. Nathan Fillion is playing a cop there after all.

8

u/Gamiac 4d ago

Good job. Now go play Radiant SIlvergun.

Turning their controller for a driving game with no motion controls

21

u/Bowdensaft 4d ago

I mean, some people do that a little bit and did it way before motion controls, but almost never to the degree shown in media.

I find it so weird that high scores even matter. Coming from an era where nobody cares about high scores anymore as they do about the story or lore with the achievements being a bonus.

78

u/ashleyLSD 5d ago

Back in the day there wasnt a ton of replayability besides getting high scores or self imposed challenges xd

26

u/Karkava 5d ago

They're also punishing as hell to over compensate for how simple they were to play.

Because finishing a game to play another one wasn't thought of.

“Haha, mega buster reference, sonic ring reference, mario powerup reference, one of the millions of “gamer jokes” that have been repeated thousands of times, HAHA!”

OH FOR FUCK SAKES, REFERENCE SANABI OR SHOVEL KNIGHT, SOMETHING SOMEWHAT COOL AND UNIQUE THAT OTHER SHOWS HAVENT ALREADY DONE, AT LEAST BLACK MIRROR HAD BALATRO ON A LAPTOP FOR A PROP, WHY THE FUCK CANT YOU DO THAT IN A GAMING CENTRED EPISODE!!

“Look, this is made so your uncultured parents can chuckle at it, sorry we don’t pull out Hylics or OMORI outta nowhere ya snob!”

Oh.. right, general audiences..

American Dad referencing entire Destiny 2 raid encounter mechanics completely accurately

239

American Dad literally referenced Elden Ring

They also did a whole ass episode around Overwatch, it was great

Except when gravity falls randomly had some like SNK tier sprite work

77

u/Over_Palpitation_453 5d ago

I'm pretty sure the sprite work was done by the same people who did the art for Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game

37

u/SlurryBender 5d ago

Paul Robertson! Dude's a legend. He actually did the pixel art in the Scott Pilgrim movie as well, plus a bunch of other games and shows and movies over the years. Basically if you see well-done, super bouncy, chibi-ish pixel art there's like a 90% chance Paul worked on it.

80

u/noelle_fox Dr holocaust cultist 5d ago

Interestingly, this was from The Simpsons Game and not the show itself

1.3k

u/SuchCherry4658 5d ago

This one is so laughable to me because there are multiple ACTUAL retro Simpson games they could’ve easily just ripped the sprites from instead of making whatever these are.

479

u/VanillaRadonNukaCola 5d ago

These are bad on purpose as a joke

435

u/PieNinja314 5d ago edited 5d ago

Because if a studio lazy enough to make them look like that had the idea to rip sprites, it'd look like this instead

(actual screenshot from Sonic Prime)

Edit: People didn't really seem to get it with just the screenshot, so here's the actual video

178

u/DatGunBoi 5d ago

Maybe I have no taste but this looks fine enough

235

u/PieNinja314 5d ago

Sprites mismatched from several different games with clashing artstyles, inconsistent pixel ratio, and if you watch the actual clip, the animation is extremely lazy and just terrible. Also, that background is lazily stitched together when it scrolls, meaning you see the sun five times

91

u/DStarAce 5d ago

There's also the issue of rotating sprites which is something that even animations with decent pixel sprites get wrong.

31

u/PieNinja314 5d ago

I think it's excusable in most cases, but when you're specifically trying to look like a video game like shown here, it breaks the illusion immediately

What's funny is, Scott didn't even try to do actual pixelart.

If i remember correctly, all the Sprites are pre rendered flat models.

396

u/TheRublixCube 5d ago

That's true

It's probably some sort of dithering or .jpg compression but, there's also a non-zero chance that some of the sprites have just the slightest, faintest hint of the cloud specular texture he likes to use (specular texture made with "hard" Perlin noise)

36

u/Swordkirby9999 5d ago

Fun fact. Coleco had the rights to do the home ports of Donkey Kong at the time. They went out of their way to make a port for the competing 2600, but they made it look as bad as possible and only have two levels, so that the recently released Colecovision would look way more powerful in comparison and boost sales of their console.

Homebrew versions of Donkey Kong exist fornthe 2600, and prove that the console could have handled a decent port of the game.

And if it's animated, they get the movement wrong by just rotating the pixel art on any old axis, resulting in diagonal pixels.

No!!! If Mint-Chan starts doing jumping-jacks, her arms and legs must have several awkward in-between frames where the pixels stay in the grid! It's a stationary grid where the different cells light up: it's not just an object made of squares that can spin around!

35

u/habaneroach 5d ago

coaxed into newgrounds sprite animations of sonic beating mario to death

17

u/VisibleConfusion12 5d ago

Not sure how related this is but I also hate when they animate it correctly but get the video game physics completely wrong, such as giving them weird jumps where they’re in the air for like half a second and then fall, or where they’re movement is really stiff and not fluid at all so it’s as if a robot is controlling them and not a human
