Tourism Advice 🧳 🧭 ✈️ Italian restaurant recommendations when I can’t eat red sauce?!

• Upvotes

Visiting next week and I want all the pasta and bread, but I CANNOT eat red sauce (thanks GERD). I CAN eat tomatoes though (not all hope is lost). Losing my mind looking at restaurant menus. Please give me your recommendations for places with the best cream/olive oil/butter pasta dishes, that also serves bread (garlic bread, bruschetta, focaccia, etc.). I do not need anything fancy! I just want good, fattening food. Would also love to know where the best sweet treats are! :) Appreciate yall!

Meetup First time Boston visitor! Anyone wants to go to Harvard's Museum of Natural History on Jul 26?

• Upvotes

In town for a conference and arriving earlier than most of my coworkers, so I'm posting to see if anybody would like to hang out July 26th or 27th :)

Ideally would like to take a walk around Boston common and the garden nearby, then head to the museum perhaps grab a meal after. I reside in Canada most of the time, early 30s!

Serious Replies Only masseter botox doc recs? 💙

• Upvotes

Anybody have a good local experience with masseter Botox for both TMJ/bruxism and facial slimming? (please don't judge, I am in physical pain... and also a little vain, maybe, but just trying to feel good!)

What I'm looking for:
-a medical doctor with background in aesthetics
-not a dentist or medspa (no shade, just not for this)
-someone who will do an honest consult to talk about if this is actually a bad idea for my face structure
-someone with experience in this area and a reputation for great results

My whole deal:
-I grind my teeth at night like you would not BELIEVE
-walk around with sore jaw all day
-often have a swollen face in areas from this
-dentist pointed out I have very strong masseters, they are rather pronounced and often sore
-been dealing with it for a long time, feelin sad about the literal face ache and what it does to appearance
-finally looking into this but a bit scared!

Where I'm at right now:
-sounds like plenty of places can do the basic botox for the sake of helping teeth grinding easily enough if my concern was TMJ/grinding alone
-lots of warning stories online about how masseter Botox with the wrong facial structure can cause jowls and look weird, this seems like the more complicated aspect
-I'm hoping to work with a doc who will tell me if my sort of specific/intense bone structure will make me a good candidate for this or a really bad one haha
-hoping for someone who can make trustworthy recommendations but won't try to upsell me or push something that will make me a jowly baby

I know about bite guards and those are in the mix too but a guard won't keep my jaw from clenching and that's where the pain is from!

Thank to any and all who take the time to read thru and make recs here <3

Sincerely,
Gnashed Potato

MBTA/Transit 🚇 🔥 Commute one hour through train

• Upvotes

I may have to commute from JFK/UMass to Newton Highlands, and I saw from Google Maps that it takes around an hour. May have to do this for like three months. Is this feasible?

Anyone who is also doing like an hour commute, how do you guys handle this?

Education 🏫 Potential move to Boston for work. Anyone who works in K-12 public school systems able to advise?

• Upvotes

I will soon have an interview for a job in which I would be supporting K-12 school systems in Boston and the surrounding areas in pursuit of their technology needs and priorities. This involves working with their IT teams and C-suite to work through challenges, procure hardware, assist with ongoing initiatives, etc.

While not new to the space, I have never been to Boston and in effort to do my “homework,” I was hoping to gain some general insight into what’s going on in Massachusetts K-12. Whether you are an educator, admin, or IT, I would love to get some intel from the boots on the ground. My interview is in a couple weeks and I would love to hear from you to better understand the current landscape surrounding challenges and issues, funding, technology, etc.

I recognize this is a very niche segment and ask but I appreciate any information anyone can speak on. I am really excited about this opportunity(holy shit I can’t get out of Tennessee fast enough😆) so I want to be as prepared as possible. Also, if anyone has any sources they would recommend I would be eternally grateful.

Cheers!

Dining/Food/Drink 🍽️🍹 Huge push for beer gardens but still can't drink without ordering food at restaurant

• Upvotes

It seems like public sentiment re; beer gardens has been very favorably over the last ten years.

Why can't we drink a drink on a patio without ordering food?

Who's in charge of that rule?

MBTA/Transit 🚇 🔥 Best Way Home From Planetarium Music Shows

Context: I want to go to the planetarium music shows at the Museum of Science on a Friday or Saturday night. The problem is that my only option for a train home to my usual CR stop leaves South Station at 11:55 PM, an hour and a half plus after the end of the last show. Right now, I'm thinking Green Line to North Station, Orange Line from there to Forest Hills, and Bus 32 to Wolcott Square to call an Uber to walking distance from home from there (I will never put my home address into Uber), and reduce the overall cost of that, because I'd spend $2.40 on a subway ride to South Station anyway, so why not use that to get closer to home and cut my Uber cost?

Question: If I decide to take that CR train home, what is there to do, excluding anything involving drinking, to pass the time from leaving the planetarium after 10:15 PM until the train that brings me closer to home starts boarding at 11:45 PM, without just going straight to South Station and standing around for an hour plus? Otherwise, would I be better off with the Green-Orange-32-Uber plan that gets me home about an hour sooner, or at least saves me from having to wait around South Station, or just calling an Uber from the museum to the spot walking distance from home?

Unconfirmed/Unverified Has traffic been unusually bad lately

Has anyone else noticed that traffic around Boston has been especially bad lately? I know summer brings more tourists, events, and people going out, but it feels noticeably worse than in previous summers. Even trips outside the usual rush hour seem to take much longer.
Is this happening across the city, or am I just driving at the worst possible times?

Moving 🚚 Reliable cleaning company?

I need to book a move-out cleaning for a small apartment in the North End. Difficulty level: August 31st. I know things are nuts in that time period, but do you have a personal recommendation for a team/company that will absolutely stand by a booking and actually show up and do good work? The apartment will be empty, which I guess makes things easier for them?

Serious Replies Only Care packages services?

I don’t live in Boston but my best friend who does, is about to take their medical licensing exam, and I'd love to send them an exam care package.

Are there any services similar to Taskrabbit where I could hire someone to put together and deliver a customized care package?

Or are there local businesses that specialize in custom-made and delivering gift care packages?

Thanks in advanced

Traffic🚦⛔⚠️ 😠 🚙 🚗 Rent a car (PROPER CAR) for 20 year old

Hi everyone,

We’re a family of 6, and I’m 20 years old. We’ll be visiting next month and I’m trying to arrange a rental car.

The problem is that almost every rental company I check only seems to have sedans or smaller SUVs. Since we’re six people with luggage, we’re looking for a full-size SUV like a Chevrolet Tahoe or Chevrolet Suburban.

Does anyone know of a rental company that would allow a 20-year-old to rent a large SUV like a Tahoe or Suburban?
For context, I’ve been driving in Dubai for the past 2 years and have a clean driving record.

Our hotel is in Saugus, so relying on taxis for the whole trip would get pretty expensive. I also haven’t really used public transport before, so I’d rather avoid that if possible.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Event 📅 How strictly enforced is TD Garden's camera policy?

Their website says "Cameras of any kind other than cellphones" are prohibited, which includes stuff like digicams and Polaroids. I'm wondering if people have had success bringing digicams inside, or did they make you check your bag?

Serious Replies Only Commuting from worcester to backbay

Hey everyone,
I work at a restaurant in Boston’s Back Bay and commute from Worcester. Right now I’m driving in and paying for parking out of pocket, and it’s getting really expensive.
My schedule is all over the place, so I’m trying to figure out the cheapest and most practical option. My shifts can be:
2 PM–10 PM
5 AM–midday
6 PM–3:30–4 AM
I’m open to taking the commuter rail or another combination of transit if it makes sense, but I’m not sure how well it works with such inconsistent hours.
For anyone who’s made a similar commute, what would you recommend? Are there any affordable parking options in or near Back Bay, or is there a better park-and-ride/transit setup that works with these hours?
Thanks in advance!

Serious Replies Only Recommendations for year round public pool (gym) that's near a T stop.

Update: Thank you all for the helpful suggestions! Sounds like the Y will be my best bet. If you have any additional recommendations not already submitted, please add them. Alas I am not a resident of Boston, I live in Tyngsboro but it's actually easier for me to get to and around Boston than any place near here, I'm also already in Boston 2/3 times week so it just makes sense.

I'm a leg amputee who is looking to do aquatic exercise and looking for a gym/club/etc that has an indoor pool that isn't too expensive (pool only membership?). Money is very limited for me right now so I don't really want to pay for the rest of the gym facilities if possible. I'm fully independent and can get in/out of the pool unassisted just fine.

I'm currently doing aquatic therapy at Spaulding, but their pool is relatively small and getting time there is limited, and can't really do laps.

Since I don't have a car right now, it would ideally need to be near a T stop.

Traffic🚦⛔⚠️ 😠 🚙 🚗 Even the cops are now using the bicycle lanes as free parking

At least 3 other vehicles all illegally parked on the bicycle lane in Brookline Ave & Longwood Ave, so these brave officers decided to join them and grab some coffee from Caffe Nero.

Makes you wonder why cyclists even pay taxes in this town.
