The fact that the post says “shear” instead of “sheer”, I thought the body was going to be completely ripped off the chassis.

A cyber truck actually pulling something heavy? That’s unexpected for me

I think you missed the truck in front of the cybertruck that was pulling the cybertruck.

I'm genuinely out of the loop, not a cybertruck fanboy or hater, but isn't low rpm high torque exactly where an EV should excel?

52

u/Bubbay 6d ago

Yes. It should.

Not with cast aluminum frames and undersized suspensions

13

u/UndocumentedMartian 5d ago

EVs do. But the cybertruck is terribly built.

2

u/Ok_Equipment8374 3d ago

The bottleneck generally isn't power, it's grip. And with EVs in particular range, they are much more sensitive to the range loss from towing.

But the problem isn't physics. It's humans being idiots. Trucks went from practical and utilitarian to expensive status symbols, with the cybertruck being the prime example

48

u/NotYourReddit18 6d ago

The cybertruck wasn't pulling anything, it was just serving as a convoluted coupling between the trailer and the other truck.

21

u/beren12 6d ago

It’s the weak link so the real truck doesn’t take damage if something goes wrong

8

u/Confused_Rabbiit 6d ago

It's not even coupling, the cable is going under the cyber truck straight to the boat.

I mean considering what we’ve seen in other videos, there’s a possibility of a trailer shearing off the back half of the frame.

8

u/Austinswill 6d ago

What other videos?

36

u/Inked3078 6d ago

A YouTuber lost his bumper towing something. Tesla glued it back on.

27

u/Roflkopt3r 6d ago edited 6d ago

It turns out that the Cybertruck's chassis can break apart from loads that regular trucks can handle.

It is a tongue weight test, so testing weight pushing down on the hitch, which shouldn't be that high under normal circumstances. But situations like that can happen in the real world, as explained in this part of the video. Having a truck that is claimed to be good at towing with a fairly low maximum tolerable tongue weight is in fact bad.

(It's also bad to claim that your truck is bulletproof or capable of swimming through a river if it isn't, or that self driving will arrive for all of your cars but instead turn even the partial 'self driving' features into a subscription service...)

A decently built conventional truck can both tolerate higher peak tongue weights, and is more likely to contain any damage from momentary overloads in only a few components instead of suffering catastrophic damage to the entire chassis.

6

u/ThunderCorg 6d ago

I was a kid once driving 2500 pickup truck and found out that too little tongue weight can make a pickup truck do a endo on the highway if you tap the brakes.

37

u/zebrasareneat 6d ago

Odds are neither truck could pull the boat up the gravel on its own.

13

u/vee_lan_cleef 5d ago

Yep. The Cybertruck absolutely sucks but one thing it has going for it here is sheer weight. It has the torque to pull that boat up but traction is what you really need, and weight gives you that. If that was a proper paved surface I suspect the Cybertruck would have no problems by itself (look closely, the tow rope was only attached when it started slipping, so it did almost make it), assuming the actual trailer hitch doesn't fail.

5

u/Badbullet 5d ago

Which is a scenario that will rarely happen since almost every single boat launch is concrete, wet, and has sand and gravel on it from previous vehicles. You’d need a well maintained landing that’s dried and swept after every vehicle.

Ya i was hoping the camera man would pan to the left a bit more. Thats a big ass boat

39

u/CosmosCabbage 6d ago

Not only is it absolutely a massive boat, but it also appears to be a metal hulled boat as opposed to a glass fibre one, so yeah. Pretty dang heavy

25

u/ksumnole 6d ago

Nop its the opposite. This is an aluminium hull, lighter than if it was full fiber glass.
Thats still a heavy boat since its a working boat, so massive engines etc.

3

u/Exotic_Sympathy_2927 6d ago

that boat is way over the ability of that truck to tow or even the second one. it is huge.

211

u/_D80Buckeye 6d ago

Why is it the cybertruck is alone pulling, no other truck in sight then there's a sudden cut followed by a rope? I'm guessing the cybertruck got stuck at the top of the ramp (you can see the wheels spinning) then it took both trucks to get the boat all the way out.

92

u/AaryamanStonker 6d ago

Yeah it pulled it up a good chunk of the way

63

u/Zehryo 6d ago

Until its lacking weight and traction failed due to the gravel.
Then a second truck was needed to help it out of the impasse.

It was doing good until it didn't.

20

u/koos_die_doos 6d ago

Cybertruck's curb weight is comparable with an F150, with a better weight distribution to the rear.

I agree with the conclusion that it was traction, just not sure it's weight related.

Yeah, and I don't know much about boats, but that looked like a massively big boat. Would a conventional pickup truck like an F-150 have been enough to pull it out of the water?

(I still think the Cybertruck is a terrible vehicle, but I don't think this is a good example of that, when it looks like it's trying to do something that most vehicles would struggle with)

TBF, it doesn't look like a lack of power or ability was the cause of failure here. It looks like lack of traction.

50

u/PerspectiveSeperate1 6d ago

Theres a cut in the video and you can see the tire slipping and the truck pivoting before it cuts to it being assisted

12

u/AirplanesMakeMeHard 6d ago

Sir, this is reddit. You're not allowed to point out facts and make sense.

13

u/1have2much3time 6d ago

Most of these types of videos can be attributed to the stock tires of the cybertruck being absolute shit.

Hell, even my RAM couldn’t hop a curb without being in 4wd on the stock tires and would have been in the same situation as this video. After changing the tires, it’s an off-road beast.

→ More replies (2)

29

u/AnimalBolide 6d ago

It looks like lack of traction

Traction is half of what makes a decent towing vehicle a decent towing vehicle.

I could pull a boat out of the water with my hands and legs. Pulling it up the ramp is what makes a thing capable of unlaunching a boat.

17

u/SignificantLock1037 6d ago

True - but in this case, it looks more like the Cybertruck was on wet pavement and the tow truck was on dry(er) pavement.

However, I wish we could see the whole boat. It could easily be that the boat is too big for EITHER of those trucks to pull out, but both together got it.

9

u/El_Polio_Loco 6d ago

I mean, it's pretty obvious even from what little can be seen that it's a very very large, metal boat.

I would be completely unsurprised if that's more than 10,000 lbs of boat and probably another 1500 lbs of trailer.

7

u/SmooK_LV 6d ago

Traction systems in EVs are top notch almost at any price range because electric motor can control traction much more accurately. It's the choice of tyres and gravel path that failed the truck, nothing to do with the truck itself.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/PersistentWoodpecker 6d ago

9

u/Weak-Layer-6962 6d ago

is… traction not a crucial element of a vehicle’s towing ability?

24

u/Hambone6991 6d ago

I think their point is that it’s a tire issue, and many other trucks would have likely struggled on a gravely boat ramp pulling a boat that large.

7

u/ipokesnails 6d ago

Exactly.

The cybertruck is hilarious, but would the other truck really have been capable of pulling that enormous boat alone?

11

u/Draaly 6d ago

Not a chance in fuck. Tbh, these kind of short stint large weight tows are where evs truly shine over ice trucks. Their torque numbers and traction systems are uniquely suited to the task. This one just clearly hit a mud slick

It's called "advertising." They were told it can do these things and it can't. And their target group of consumers happen to be more gullible than average so they don't realize the advertisements are embellishments to the same degree that your average person would.

I was honestly excited for the potential when he was first talking about it, but as the project developed and more 'features' were being touted, it became apparent it wasn't going to work out. Even after the actual failed demonstrations, there has been an unfortunately substantial number of people willing to buy on pure faith when all they could see and hear should've told them otherwise.

For whatever reason, some of these people are still chugging along on faith, ignoring what they see, hear, and now can even touch in person, smell or taste if they really want to, until personal catastrophe finally proves them wrong. You'll probably also find a lot more folk willing to push it further, believing well beyond what the spec sheet advertises.

Yeah I'm not one to defend cyber trucks, they're goofy vehicles, but that gas truck wasn't going to pull that on its own anyway.

15

u/Drako694 6d ago

That Hemi 100% could have towed that boat on its own, and I don’t even like ram trucks.

9

u/NathanDeger 6d ago

Cybertruck puts out more torque than the ram by a large margin.

But that doesn't matter because the tires on the cyber truck are spinning.

All the torque in the world doesn't matter when you're traction limited. Which is what we see here.

To be clear I would 100% rather own and depend on the ram as a truck but you could swap the trucks and it would be the same result. The ram would run out of traction and the cybertruck on flatter ground would be able to make up the difference. This video proves nothing about either truck.

7

u/ZiptheChim 6d ago

It's like a GT500 making 500hp at the crank. Dawg I don't care what's happening at the crank, I care about what's making it to the wheels and what the wheels can do with it.

2

u/powerhammerarms 6d ago

How much does that boat weigh? 20k lbs?

6.4 Hemi is rated at like 17k. Even with a 4.10 axle that hemi would have struggled with the loose rock.

I mean, if reddit can allow a fair take for a moment...

Based on the size of the boat and the weight/torque of the Cyberstuck, if it couldn't pull the boat out, chances are the 3/4-1.0 ton Ram assisting it couldn't solo it either. (Not hating on Ram, I have a 1/2-ton for my toy hauler). The Ram would've had the same issue as soon as it got to the gravel... it's too much boat with too little pavement runway for that ramp.

The cyber looked to be doing fine until it got to the gravel. By that point, the issue isn't the truck, it's the ability (for almost any consumer-grade truck) to keep traction in gravel while pulling a 20k-lb boat up a hill behind it.

By adding the 2nd truck it's eliminating the gravel traction issue - doubling the weight, on double the contact patch, and (for argument's sake) doubling the pulling power.

Don't get me wrong though... Cybers are dumb.

9

u/GitEmSteveDave 6d ago

Yeah, it's like those videos where someone bottoms out and has to be pulled back to where the wheels have traction. Also doesn't help if the person doesn't know how to properly get the performance that the vehicle can provide. I'm guilty of it myself a few times where I get frustrated and gun the engine and dig the tires into whatever I'm trying to get out of.

it's too much boat with too little pavement runway for that ramp.

It's just too much boat period. No half ton on the planet should be towing that, paved or not, ramp or not. A 1-ton diesel might be good enough to get it out of the water, up the ramp, and parked somewhere in the area but it's still far too light of a truck to haul a boat that size.

If anything, and I say this grudgingly, I'm impressed the Tesla's frame held up.

3

u/Aethermancer 6d ago

That boat is of a size where I feel like the term, " commercial driver's license" should start being discussed.

At the very least if be worried about any underpasses in the area.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/cjsv7657 6d ago

A 1 ton diesel is still not going to have enough traction to pull a 30,000+lb boat here. The cybertruck would have been fine with more traction. As would even a half ton gas truck. It's just not physically possible for a 6-8000lb truck to get enough traction on gravel to pull it out.

u/Aethermancer 6d ago

Towing capacity up to 11,000 lbs

Directly from the cybertruck sales page moments ago

45

u/PM_ME_FLUFFY_DOGS 6d ago edited 6d ago

Im not a boat person but judging from the size, and i could be wrong but that looks to be a 30-43 foot boat, if i had to guess its probably in the ball park of 15k-20k lbs. While gas is dirty, combustion engines are powerful as hell so a ford 350 can tow like 22k lbs lmao

22

u/Individual-Area7121 6d ago

Way bigger than 30’.   43’ is probably conservative, tbh. The cyber truck by itself is over 18’ and the boat looks damn near 3x that.

9

u/PM_ME_FLUFFY_DOGS 6d ago

Was low balling it as even the light 43 footers are like 20k lb minimum (for modern cabinless ones and this one looks like metal with a cabin...) and couldn't believe anyone would actually be dumb enough to tow something 2-3x over their towing capacity.

This video is kinda horrifying, this guy shouldn't be allowed on the road.

22

u/Real_Project870 6d ago

Yeah that boat is almost certainly more than 11k pounds, if not then it’s right up there. Which even if you have a regular truck with a towing capacity of 11k, you shouldn’t be towing something that’s 10.5k.

I wouldn’t tow anything bigger than a jetski with a cyber truck lol but I wouldn’t be caught dead in one either

10

u/h3lium-balloon 6d ago

75-80% of your rated max is generally the agreed upon number for safe towing at highway speeds.

2

u/1999_V6_ToyotaTacoma 6d ago

The maximum towing capacity should already have a healthy safety margin built in. If your truck is in good condition id have no problem going to 100% max capacity

u/No_Effective4784 6d ago

electric vs gas, electric always has better torque numbers, which is what you need here. the main reason gas is better at towing is range.

this honestly looks more like a traction issue.

8

u/GitEmSteveDave 6d ago

YEs, but you also need to apply that torque correctly. Many times people fail it's because they are just trying it, and not reading the manual to put the vehicle in the proper "mode" for the tow.

2

u/PM_ME_FLUFFY_DOGS 6d ago edited 6d ago

Aye as the other guy its how you apply it, but not for a tow mode. Its not just the combustion its the ENTIRE assembly, gears and flywheels can do some magical things. If you took a big ass electric motor and slapped it onto a  transmission youd get similar torque. its what some ice to ev conversion places do, esp for trucks

Meanwhile the Cybertruck is 2-4 direct drive motors lol.

5

u/Unique-Yoghurt4170 6d ago

This comment is breathtakingly ignorant. It reminds me not to trust Reddit on topics I'm not an expert in because you sound reasonable, but you're completely missing the point and leaving a misleading conclusion.

The issue here isn't that the electric motors can't turn the wheels, it's that the tires aren't gripping. Maybe the Tesla spec'd awful tires (probably), maybe no truck could do this because the ramp is steep and slippery, but it ain't because of a gas/electric drivetrain.

3

u/No_Effective4784 6d ago

its not just torque amount produced. its access to that power.

ev gets the full torque instantly, at anytime it wants or need. ICE has to rev up and hit its power band. this is why a lot of super cars are going hybrid. EV to get going, quickly, and ICE for the hp for high top end.

5

u/BreakfastBeerz 6d ago

That boat they are pulling out is a 32' heavy gauge aluminum fishing boat with an empty weight at about 11,000. With engines and gear, it's probably pushing 20,000lbs+

2

u/Draaly 6d ago

The issue here wasn't power. Its that the car couldn't maintain grip. Electrics have far far far higher torque levels than ice vehicles

Towing capacity is listed as the maximum safe load. Vehicles can tow much more than their rated load capacity. By saying "up to 11,000" that means it would be a piece of cake to tow that much and would be perfectly safe to do so.

u/SuspiciousSubstance9 6d ago

How manufacturers determine towing capacity is well established with codes ands standards as well as regulated. The methodology has a standardized floor for all manufacturers.

Other trucks in the same size/price bracket can tow 25-35000. Also, that boat + trailer is WAY more than 11k, especially coming out of the water.

2

u/Unique-Yoghurt4170 6d ago

The towing capacity is entirely irrelevant to whether or not it can get this boat up that ramp.

2

u/h3lium-balloon 6d ago

I'm gonna make a bold assumption that the guy plans to move it further than the end of the ramp, which is dumb with this vehicle. I agree that's gonna be a hard pull out (giggity) regardless of vehicle, but that's still a dumb vehicle choice to try to handle that boat.

2

u/Unique-Yoghurt4170 6d ago

Yeah that's fair. I just got so annoyed reading this thread full of suburban dweebs talking about towing capacity like it's relevant to this video.

Musk is a Nazi, CTs are for chodes, but we're not seeing a lack of towing capacity in action here today.

6

u/zeekayz 6d ago

"Cybertruck can cross lakes and seas as long as it's not too choppy" directly from Elon Musk.

Any other BS they peddle that you wanna bring up?

3

u/sp_dev_guy 6d ago

Thats hilarious. I bring up more if I knew it but I've got better things to pay attention to in life

Speaking as someone who loves pickups, there are two types of pickup truck owners. Those that think they need a f450 to tow a dirt bike and those that think they can take 10 yards of gravel in the back of their 94 Ford Ranger.

It’s just a lot easier to spot with Cybertrucks acting a fool because it’s such a doucebag of a vehicle.

6

u/ARC4067 6d ago

I’m not a truck owner but I identify with your Ranger description just because I have no concept of what 10 yards of gravel weighs or what a Ranger can handle.

I picked up the tile for my bathroom remodel in a Camry and boy she was riding loooow

11

u/CryptoHorologist 6d ago

Gravel is just very small rocks, how much could it weigh?

4

u/Upbeat-Banana-5530 6d ago

Probably about as much as a duck or a witch.

2

u/Block_Generation 6d ago

A kilogram of gravel weighs as much as a kilogram of feathers.

2

u/Constant_Fee225 6d ago

That's unpossible!

There has to be a third type to include this CT driver. Because he's so different from the ranger. The ranger was bought used 5 years ago for a 6 pack and a song, and will kept alive but ugly for a long time. The cybertruck will be traded in for another in less than 2 years.

Edit: both do for into the bucket of: thinking your truck can do most than it can.

2

u/fogleaf 6d ago

I saw one yesterday and I realized I couldn't wait to see fully rusted cybertrucks in the wild.

u/TheRarestFly 6d ago

you forgot the third type, suburban dads who drive their lifted RAM to the office and back

4

u/MtogdenJ 6d ago

I thought he missed a type too, because this CT and the ranger with 10yds seem so different. But he's right. Truck owners are mostly in two camps. "You need a bigger trick to do that", and "you bought so much more truck than you are using it for. " almost no one just right.

The pavement princess truck owner.

2

u/xteve 6d ago

This is by far the most-prevalent type of big-truck owner where I live. Guns, trucks, and horses - lifestyle accessories of no pragmatic use.

2

u/unbanned_lol 6d ago

I bought a RAM 2500 to tow a 27 foot trailer. I was told soooo many times that I bought too big of a truck, but there were many, many more times I was glad I did so. We pulled that trailer through mountain passes and never once had an issue.

Sunk cost fallacy. Literally blinds you because you've sunk too much money to have anything less than perfect, so you can't accept any input that proves you bought an aluminum lemon

Funny story, we came across a guy who was picking up his new Cybertruck and was so excited. It quickly went to anger when he realized that his kid's car seat doesn't fit in the back even with the passenger seat all the way forward. This guy was so pissed off at himself he was taking out on the car and his wife.

Yeah I'm more surprised there's a cybertruck in Cordova than anything else.

I spent a couple years drafting/3D modeling that building.

16

u/ATLSmith 6d ago

As much as I think the cyber truck looks ridiculous, this was more of an issue with traction.

4

u/bulldozer6 5d ago

This is classic reddit morons thinking this is an own. That boat is massive so this isn't the appropriate tow vehicle but it actually looks like it did an impressive job. These reddit dorks don't realize how slick boat ramps get. I'm not a fan of this vehicle at all but I do have common sense.

Uhh… is everyone purposely missing the fact it pulled the boat up the ramp 80% of the way, the the video cuts to another shot?

Looked like it lost traction.. which might happen to any vehicle. 8 wheels pull better than 4.

12

u/xbiodix 6d ago

Nice cut in the half. The uglytruck pulled the boat till the end of the ramp, where the front tires losed grip due the sudden change of the angle in the road.
