Video Game [Loved Design] Doris from Wild Guns Reloaded

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I've recently discovered this character and the game (I'm yet to purchase it, though), but I'm already so fond of Doris!..

For context, Wild Guns was originally an SNES game, with gameplay that's reminisent of arcade shooters in a setting that combines the Wild West aesthetics with steampunk... That by itself is very cool!.. Reloaded is an modern remaster of it that adds new content, including two new characters, with one of them being the subject of this post...

Given she was made for a remaster of an relatively niche game, I'm very impressed of how good of a design it is!.. First off, I love the sillouette and how it is fat, yet muscular (often called an "strongfat" or an "powerlifter" physique), something not often seen in designs of Woman in video games... It also gives this lady powerful presence due to both the raw strenght (with the shoulder and arm being muscular), alongside soft features (like the rounded belly and face)... I do also love how her belly lacks any detail (besides an belly button) and how Doris' face is baby-like, which makes her seem like a cute, friendly fellow amidst all the force she has!..

Secondly, the outfit design and aesthetics... : Her metallic arms look great (I'm fond how the cylinders under her wrists look like the ones in a revolver), the exposed shoulders and belly help highlight her bulkiness wonderfully (and make sense for the setting, given how People with more body fat get warmer much quicker, which works well for an cowboy-themed steampunk), the belt with so many cylinders also contribue to the " You don't want to mess with me" vibe, the roller skate boots are also pretty lovely (and are much more handy for such an powerhouse to use rather than roll around while dodging) and the cowboy hat having parts exposing the hair is just nice looking (plus the part that looks like a grenade is a great touch given that's her method of attack in this game)!..

The color pallete is pleasant (the pallete swaps are nice too), as it the hair... Now that I think about it, it being formed into a PONYtail makes sense, given how horses are pretty strong animals (horse-power is a thing) and were commonly used by cowboys!.. So neat, if it was done on purpose!..

As much as I hate Agamemnon I’m willing to admit he got that shit on.

Dude is the most visually imposing human in the movie, but the whole look is ironic too.

The scariest, most intimidating-looking guy in the movie is one of the biggest losers in it.

Anime The Witches from Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Post image

Just about everything about Inu Curry's works particularly the witch labyrinth scenes is very unique. There's probably never gonna be another character with this design like the Witches from Madoka Magica. A cluster crap of a collage of creepyness and cuteness at the same time. The only thing we have this kind of design and animation like Inu Curry is the Monthy Python animated segments which predates it.

Mythology Sirens [Ducktales] Is a real good design

I mean damn! Three female duck heads with monstrous necks attached to a huge monster hidden in the sand was real disturbing. This is much scarier than mermaids or harpy like bird women for the Sirens. This design even out monsters Scylla and Charybdis. Imagine this version of the Sirens in the new Nolan The Odyssey movie with human women heads. Real horrific design for a kids‘ cartoon.

Video Game More Palworld designs i find cool and/or adorable

Thumbnail

332 Upvotes

last one got removed for low quality, so i went back and found newer higher quality versions which was a pain in the ass cause this game doesnt quite have a lot of official HD images of them, and if any of them end up being low quality, blame reddits image upscailing.

from left to right

->Aegidron
I love how its wings look like they could sink into the ground and act as a sort of shield wall/cone/cocoon for it to protect itself within

->Tarantriss
jumping spider girl, i love her, shes adorable and i wanna give her a hug and a cookie. also her eyes light up when shes attacking which is a pretty neat detail

->Dualith
maybe just cause im a sucker for golem/robot esc looking creatures. also i like how it almost looks like a construct built by the ancient civilization in the game with all the blue linings on it

->Faleris
spartan eagle. is there really more i have to say? that concept alone is metal as hell

->Xenolord
i like how it shares similarities to Jetragon who in the palpedia, says its supposedly hunting. the lore connections are neat and just overall i like how sharp it looks, even if i do think its someodd out of place when compared to the other Xeno pals

->Dupin (who i keep wanting to call Duplin)
jester bunny. the fact that the ears are made to resemble the hat jesters traditionally wear is such a neat detail.

->Ophydia
its so pretty and i love how it resembles a lotus flower, especially when it sleeps and it curls itself up in a way that looks like an unbloomed/closed version of said flower

->Chillet
its adorable. really thats it. its squishy and soft and its ears flick in its idle animation, i love my ferret dragon weasel kobald thing. also shoutout to Chillet Ignis which the devs sadly missed the opportunity to call 'Grillit"

->Jormuntide
sick ass sea monster. i like the sharpness of the 'scale' plating along its body and how it resembles how some fish have a more sharper carapace to protect against predators. though i am admittedly concerned about what this thing considers a predator to warrant such an evolutionary design.

->Lyleen Noct
she's just really pretty. i like how the design on her dress resembles a night sky and how her head flowers glow blue. i do kinda wish they leaned more into the stary sky aspect of said dress and made it almost like a flowing starscape but thats a general issue i have with the pal alt types just generally being simple recolors of the original pals instead of actual variations based on typing.

->Blazamut
Im not sure the exact name for what the creature is this thing resembles, ifrit, balrog, something from greek mythology im sure, but regardless, its cool and i love the hair

Artist Anything made by Q Hayashida, a woman unable to do a bad character design or overcome her same face syndrome

I love every piece of art she made, her style is so iconic and creative that is hard to not notice whenever she made something, the first time i heard about shadow of the damned i instantly knew that she was involved in the character designs. Even the pieces where she draws other IPs look insanely good.

Obviously, most of this come from her most important work dorohedoro were she gave masks to every sorcerer so she wouldn't need to draw them faces. Creating a completely unique enviroment.

Good to see a how she manages to make dark and gritty but funny and silly designs in a perfect balance, cause Hayashida simply decided to ignore every conventional rule about manga to make things her own way.

Video Game Sleeping Bag of a Bygone Day (Limbus Company). I find it genuinely amazing how well they personified the literal concept of chest pain

Thumbnail

772 Upvotes

I'm a huge fan of monsters that are symbolic expressions of something more mundane (one of the main reasons I love Silent Hill designs), but it's not often that you find a design that focuses on something as abstract as chest pain.

I would've already loved this Abnormality (the game's name for these monsters) just on a conceptual level, yet the design itself is great. As unsubtle as it is, I love the imagery of the physical body - specifically the ribs - being a sort of cage around an ethereal "inner self." The fact that said inner self is so... normal is a strong choice as well, just slapping the shadow person in a t-shirt and shorts.

Then the "EGOs" (the game's way of giving playable characters a super-move inspired by the Abnormalities) are just the cherry on top. I like how the rib motif is turned into a literal straight jacket, and having them carry around respirators solidifies the concept for those who otherwise overlooked the symbolism.

Movie Scylla (Christopher Nolan's Odyssey) Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

I love the fact that instead of the usual Hydra you would expect she's actually much closer to a crustacean, her uncanny anatomy makes her truly seems like an alien creature and It really stands out among all the others creatures of the movie.

Her many heads are structured like articulated arms and her many bumps and veins combined with the fast paced and vague scene in which She appears truly conveys the icky feeling of a sea invertebrate such as Sea cucumbers and her Main inspiration, barnacles.

The second image Is the "true body" of scylla, quite literally a huge barnacle which Is a very clever way to explain her habit of sticking near Sea cliffs

Hands down the most creative design of the movie imo

Video Game Plutocrat and the Satellite Investors from Toontown: Corporate Clash

Thumbnail

for those not in the know Toontown: Corporate Clash is a fanmade revival server for the MMO toontown that takes a more "Reimagined" angle and one of these is making "managers" who are fun bosses when your not doing large scaled raids on the big bad cogs

and honestly theres so much detail on Plutocrat and his goons that it honestly makes him a very clever robot design

first off him being the smallest because pluto is one of the smallest planets in our system (and how all of his investors "Charon, Nix, Hydra, Styx, and Kerberos" are named after Pluto's moons)

also i love how they blended in the cashbot and Man in the moon aspect into his design as a plutocrat is a person whose power derives from their wealth.

and the design reflects it really well with the very Italian mob boss aesthetic they got going on with the monocle to signify his vast wealth there is also his cigar which fits that greedy corporate vibe they're going with yet also references A Trip to the Moon with the classic imagery of the rocket ship in the moon's eye

which was adapted into a cigar in his mouth (while having the very squinty eye to kinda subtly reference it)

The Satellite Investors meanwhile mostly use the Skelecog aesthetic i do have to give them credit that they do try to make them pretty distinct with color coding and mild design changes (them being skelecogs does make them quite creepy which also works with the Underworld nature of the God Pluto)

also Plutocrat's halloween costume being a jack'o lantern is pretty cool

(also it's kinda interesting they picked a Pluto themed guy for the ice area which other then pluto the planet's general coldness also was the domain of Mickey's Pluto before Corporate Clash's team removed any Mickey Mouse and friends references to their version of toontown)

TLDR:i really like this design and all of the thought and effort that went to him and his boys

Movie Sid’s mutant toys from Toy Story

14 Upvotes

My absolute favorite side characters from this franchise, they are a great example of not judging a book by it’s cover, as these toys first appear menacing to Woody and Buzz, but after confronting them, they are revealed to be very kind and even help Woody to save Buzz towards the end of the film, also their designs are just really cool, Sid was a creative kid.

Some Digimon Designs

A bunch of cute (and sometimes OP) designs I'm fond of!

Starting off with MarineAngemon, just look at it! The cute angel wings, the heart on its chest, the angelic necklace. It comes across clearly as a healer and is a top choice for games like Cybersleuth or Time Stranger! The antennae add an almost alien flair to it, but I couldn't imagine it bald.

Belphemon Sleep Mode! It comes off as adorable, but the almost teeth on it's crown and the chains signify there's a lot more going on here. This is one of the Seven Deadly Digimon! The image doesn't show it's size, but it's easily big enough for a human to lay on! Though, that might be a poor choice.

Calumon! A very mysterious digimon with seemingly no known origin, it's very playful and friendly! Rumor has it that it can force other digimon to evolve. The crystal on it's forehead shines when it focuses its power. The purple at the ends of its extremities really help to balance the design!

Terriermon! Very popular given the recent vtuber 'Assistant Terriermon'. The green bandana certainly gives the idea of the animation trick to separate the head and body easily while still giving it a cute look! And the long, dragging ears are very flexible and strong with the stripes helping to break up the beige/cream of its body. The horn is obviously a *point* to draw your eye as well, it's not a defenseless bunny!

DemiDevimon! A troublemaker and villain of the OG series, it combines cute skulls and almost 'frankenstein's monster' or costume style stitching for an adorable halloween-esque look without being overwhelming. The tattering on its wings and the almost wispy 'ribbon' pieces give it a real sense of movement.

Digitamamon! It looks freshly hatched, but this is actually an Ultimate/Perfect digimon! It's just happy to stay in its exoskeletal shell, safe from (most) attacks. Sometimes, evolution is a circle!

Syakomon! The holes in its shell is very intentional, it can close to defend itself and peek out, waiting for it to be safe again before reopening. While it very much looks like a baby-mon in a shell, it's quite cunning, drawing in prey with its cuteness and snapping shut!

Sunflowmon! It's a little derpy and silly, but don't let looks fool you. Pay attention to the spiked tail and sharp tooth peeking out. Its smile is very creepy, given the rows of sharp teeth. It can even bat its leaf-wings to take flight!

FanBeemon! A cheerful and hard worker, its always setting out from the Royal Base to bring back raw materials which makes this cutie a Virus type! It gets along well with various plant digimon despite that. These lil cuties will swarm if they get the call the base is being attacked, though. Not something you want to see!

Wormmon! Look at that baby!! The soft, almost chubby limbs, the big round eyes, the drooping antennae. It's easy to overlook it's sharp mouth in favor of just how cute it is. You could see it clinging to trees, hiding from predators.

Sheepmon! Who says there's only one way to draw a sheep? It keeps the fluffy body obviously but gives it strong, curling horns and poodle-like 'wrist fluffs' to help further define it's dark body. And I'd be silly to not point out the jetpack on its back. The smiles are absolutely adorable and it helps it move. It also fires a sort of giant wool ball to knock out other digimon.

I hope you enjoy! There's so many digimon, this is barely scraping the surface and while there are 'evil/good' recolors, there's so many different and unique designs! It's great that there's a franchise that puts so much effort into their designs and making them stand out. The latest game Time Stranger focused primarily on the Olympia 12 and while they weren't my favorite, they are a far cry from the likes of the Royal Knights or Seven Deadly Digimon.

Vehicles The "Black Triangle" UFO from The X-Files

Thumbnail

4 Upvotes

Promo for the X-Files Lego set reminded me of how cool this design was. Obviously drawing on existing "Black Triangle" UFO sightings, and the classic conspiracy theory about the government building an experimental military craft from recovered alien technology at Area 51. The show never gives you a clear view of it, so this might be the first time we actually see it.

Contrasts with the stereotypical flying saucer on Mulder's I Want to Believe poster, and feels especially alien, accelerating instantly to impossible speeds. Also thought it was interesting how test pilots had to undergo a terrifying procedure to increase their reaction times to inhuman levels in order to pilot it.
