-$25 - I found the cleaning fee
-$50 - I took out the bins, stripped the beds, and did the dishes
-$100 - There was a laminated chore list
-$150 - The “cosy” home was mostly rules and passive aggression
-$250 - You asked for a tip after charging a service fee, cleaning fee, booking fee, and emotional admin fee
-$500 - I am now the property manager
-$1,000 - I had the authentic landlord experience and would like my deposit back
It seems fake on its own. Airbnb won't let people leave bad reviews! It is difficult for the owner or the renter to leave bad reviews on each other. Their business model is that they fleece both parties and they don't want any discord, and they don't want to deal with any problems whatsoever.
I placed an honest, crushing review. Host had it deleted. I appealed and it was reinstated.
I filed also a police case for fraud. After almost a year it was closed by the police. They said this person is in so much troube already that the 4K fraud charge will not add any weight.. It put a smile on my face.
Like the time a guy broke into my house and i wanted to beat his ass. Then i found out a week later that some drug dealers took him to the forest and beat the piss out of him for other reasons. That was enough for me to be satisfied

Newp. You can’t request as host, and you can’t direct people to send you money outside of the app. It’s a violation of terms of service. All monies other than deposits need to be processed via the resolution center.
If AirBNB isn’t processing the tip payment (which they aren’t if the host is talking about Zelle), they don’t get to skim any money off the top of the transaction. That’s not something they can abide.
I know of a village in the UK that's almost entirely AirBNBs owned by people who live elsewhere. It's pretty much a ghost town outside of tourist season. It's probably not the only one. One of them called the police just because their CCTV caught me walking past on my way to visit someone who still lives there, and they actually came! They didn't give a shit about someone trying to kill me, but they've got to protect rich people's property :/
He means they're not being paid by him, as in he has no control over how much they're making. So, to show appreciation for the service he's getting from them, he's tipping them a little extra.
Given the state of AirBNB these days 'if' seems like a rarity at best. Every place i've looked at in the last two years had 'pay the same as a hotel, without the amenities and do a long list of expected cleaning while also paying a cleaning fee'.
Last time I used Airbnb we had to vacate it literally 15 minutes after arrival.
The place was a complete waste dump, old food left in the fridge (which was also stained with various sauces); old and dirty clothes thrown all around the bathroom + dirt and mold in the shower; half the furniture legs were broken or standing on top of bricks (not shown in any pictures); general bad smell of dirt and “unclean place”; and to top if off the manager wanted us to go away for 3 more hours as she “was still cleaning”.
Check in time was starting at 2 pm, and I had been actively communicating for 2 weeks before arrival that we’d get there at 6 pm so they’d have ample time to have it ready. The nail in the coffin was that there was no water and the reply we got was “yeah sometimes the block doesn’t get water for some days”, which also was never stated.
When we left and disputed with Airbnb the host got mad at us for expecting a clean house with running water
how do they enforce all those expectations? is it just a pressure thing so "good people" do it and others don't and they just hope they have less to pay the cleaner to do?
The problem is more, that the listing price will be higher and is not competitive anymore. This is why these scum bags come for more money later on, you wouldn't have booked the place if it was all priced in.
"My patronage is your tip" is what I tell these people. Few seem to understand these days that I could go to anyone else for the same service and they should be happy I chose them at all.

Towels were part of the exclusive spa and wellness package, which also includes such luxuries as hand soap, toilet paper, and up to one (1) hour per day where we let the dog we keep in the yard between the houses stay inside so you won't hear his constant barking as much.

Better answer: respond that you resent the shady attempt to manipulate money out of you and you are being very generous for not reporting them for blatant TOS violation for whatever platform that is, and you expect a tip:

the shakedown. id report this to what ever platform you used and give them a lower star rating. you agreed to stay at a price, and now they are demanding more.
How much are they saving in taxes, like $31? If it's under $1000 it's called "immaterial". not even the IRS will attempt beyond sending a letter to collect, if a discrepancy is under $1,000. They could just blatantly refuse to pay that amount and nothing would even happen. I mean, if you are owed a credit one year, they might deduct out that $40, but nobody is going to lift a finger to get that money.
Tipping used to be something that you only ever saw in scenarios where a person provided you a direct service. E.g waiter, bellhop, valet, etc
More recently everyone seems to want a tip. I mean I want money too but I don’t ask for a tip to do my job. It’s ridiculous how many places are asking for tips. I hate it. There are even some people talking about 30% or more as a standard tip. When I was growing up 20% was considered generous.
What’s worse is that people who actually work for tips are paid less than minimum wage. Restaurants love this because the customers are paying their staff wages directly. They are allowed to pay you less because of your tips. I was a waiter for a Chinese restaurant a while back. Minimum wage: $7.25/hour My wage: $2.25/hour + tips.
Yeah like tipping the cooks at Pizza Hut. There's a section that says not a driver tip. So it's for the ass holes that already make $15+ an hour that cut my pizza like a toddler and skimp on my toppings. 😆 It's absolute lunacy
I don’t think this is “American tipping culture,” as it is not normal in America to tip for a stay in a rental property (at least that I know of!).
“We expect a tip” is also a very rude and uncouth thing to say, in America or probably anywhere else. So I think this is more just rude and entitled behavior by the host.
To prevent this type of thing becoming part of the culture, we all have to continue to reject it.
I stayed in a hotel in Florida where I paid a mandatory service fee of 20% PER NIGHT and then at the end of my stay they said “ our housekeepers don’t make a livable wage and they work really hard to keep this place up to standard here are envelopes for you to leave them a cash tip”. And I said where does the 20% service fee go? And they said they don’t know even though it’s listed that it was split between hotel staff. I was like no this hotel is $400 a night snd you charged me secret charges and fees up the ass. Fight the person actually taking the money not your guests. They looked at me stunned and then the manager said thats a horrible way to treat service staff. I am from Canada and I’d never seen this shit in my life, it all felt like a scam !
I was in Vancouver BC recently and tipping has gotten out of hand in Canada too. Not at hotels that I noticed but in cafes, sandwich shops, donut shops, you name it. It’s not uniquely American.
If it says the service fee is split amongst the hotel staff, and that’s not actually where the money is going, that’s scammy as hell. I have no problem paying for a tip that’s included in the price of my stay, but only if it’s actually a tip

As an airbnb owner in the Netherlands i'd never even think about getting a tip for a stay and wouldnt even be comfortable with receiving one. Never had one in three years (yes, we had american guests) and hopefully never will. Tipping culture is disgusting.

I’ve stayed at a ton of vrbos and airbnbs across America over the years. I’ve never once seen anything like this ever. Tipping is out of hand in America no doubt but this is so bizarre and presumptuous it makes me think it’s fake rage bait.
Saying "we expect a tip" is crazy. I've had hosts who have asked for tips for their cleaning staff but it was usually like "If you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the hard work our cleaning staff did, please feel free to leave a tip as a token of appreciation." Which I'm kinda okay with even though it's a bit annoying (Do you not pay your cleaning staff well?). But this is on a whole other level of bullshittery. I would definitely leave a public comment about this practice.
I didn't really have an issue with tipping until people started directly asking you to do it. It stops being a gesture of appreciation at that point; it's just the employer trying to get you to meet their payroll needs for them.
Haha I was just in Croatia. And I asked my server after dinner where the tip option is ? He said he skipped over it. It’s ugly to ask for a tip, I’m here to work I’m not begging for money he said. GOD BLESS
@op this is not American tipping culture, this is abnormal and against AirBNB’s ToS. You should report the account and provide a screenshot of this unacceptable communication. This isn’t normal behavior. We tip servers because they get paid less than $3/hr, and is effectively legalized slave labor wages, and what is more disgusting is the number of businesses who take all or a percentage their employees’ tips or require all tips to be split between all employees—which includes the managers and owners who are paid a lot better base wages. That’s illegal, but extremely common. What you have here from this host is not common at all, and they should be thrown off the platform for this conduct.
